John Falcetano, Chief Audit/Compliance Officer for University
Health Systems of Eastern Carolina and a long-time member of
HCCA, knows that members frequently have good questions that they
would like to ask leadership, but for some reason or another, they are
never afforded the opportunity. This column has been created to
afford them that opportunity. Members may submit their questions to
John and and he will publish the HCCA leadership response in a subsequent

Question: What is the best way for a member to study for the CHC
examination Is there some type of training offered to prepare a
candidate and if so, what types of topics are covered in the training
sessions
Leadership’s Response from Debbie Troklus: The best prep for
the CHC certification exam is to attend one of the HCCA’s Academies
(basic and advanced), although the Academies are not required to sit for
the exam. The Academies, which are offered five times a year, cover all
topics that are on the exam.
The exam is based on the seven elements of an effective compliance
program, as outlined by the Federal Sentencing Commission. The
HCCB Candidate Handbook actually reviews in great detail the content
outline for each of the elements. It is a good idea to review the
content and determine in what areas an individual feels weak, and then
study those particular areas.
I would advise reading the Health Care Compliance Professional’s
Manual and Compliance 101. The HCCA also has a practice test on
its Web site as well as a practice test in the HCCB Candidate
Handbook.
