Euro Paddle Pass
A European Approach to Competency in Paddle Sport
The Euro Paddle Pass Project was initiated and originally led and coordinated by the French Canoe Federation. In the
beginning the Project was co - financed by the European Commission as part of the European Year of Education through Sport
(EYES), by the French Canoe Federation, and supported by the involvement of five other European Canoe Federations.
The six other European Canoe Federations now involved are : Denmark, Great Britain, Ireland, Slovenia and Sweden and
Germany. Subsequently the project has had to become self financing but still strives and works towards the objective of
trans-national recognition of a series of performance awards.
To date the project has resulted in a framework based approach to a five level range of performance awards which participating
countries can either adopt directly or map there own existing awards to on the basis of meeting the frameworks levels at
the minimum standard. This way it can be recognised that performance awards in participating countries, where mapped and
confirmed by the project members, meet the frameworks minimum standards providing a level of cross country recognition of
performance attainment.
In this way a Level 3 paddler from Slovenia should have met the minimum standard or performance as a level 3 paddler in
France or Britain.
In this way Britain has so far sought to have its 1 – 3 Star awards recognised as meeting the minimum standard requirement
and has achieved this without having to make any adjustments to it’s Star Award standards. This is recognised on BCU Star
Award Certification which carries the Euro paddle pass logo.
Similarly the 1- 3 levels within the other participating countries could be recognised in Britain as meeting standards equivalent to
those of our Star Test.
The BCU 4 and 5 Star Awards are not yet recognised by the Euro Paddle Pass system. While they do meet the personal
performance standards of the Paddle Pass framework at level 4 and 5 the leadership standards within the BCU 4 and 5 Star
Awards are not a feature of the Euro Paddle Pass framework at these levels. We will however seek recognition on the basis that
they do meet the personal performance standards of the Euro Paddle Pass.
Clearly, and important to note however, because of the combined personal skills and Leadership Skills and experience required
to achieve the BCU 4 and 5 Star Awards we would not be in a position to recognise the Level 4 and 5 Awards from other
participating countries as directly equivalent.
Future projects for Euro Paddle Pass include consideration of a similar framework approach to the recognition of participating
countries Coaching Awards, however , it is important to note that at this time this particular project has only received basic
scoping attention. Any outcomes are some way down the road and may well depend on transnational work agreements as much
as on meeting coaching competency equivalence.
Euro Paddle Pass Goals
The Euro Paddle Pass Project was initiated within the context of the EYES to achieve the followings goals :
• Heighten awareness of the educational and social value of Paddle Sport.
• Increase public access to Paddle Sport through the widespread availability of standardised Paddle Sport information
and training.
• Develop a common approach to teaching/coaching standards in Paddle Sport.
• Increase awareness of the positive contribution Paddle Sport makes to the natural environment.
These Goals are to be achieved through:
• Design and implementation of a framework of minimum standards that can enable trans - national recognition of
competency tests.
• Provision of a model of standard competency tests in Paddle Sport for federations which do not have
competency tests.
• Design and production of common resource materials to assist coaches and instructors in the delivery of competency
training courses and assessments.
in Coaching Paddle Sport
Introduction
In a nutshell, I love working outside and I find coaching people a wonderful and deeply rewarding challenge. My
background to all this is rooted in my childhood where influential role models taught me to climb and kayak… I’ve never
really looked back.
At the age of 20 I stumbled across an outdoor centre in the new forest and by chance and fortune this outdoor centre
seemed to pay a great amount of value on what was known as “Soft Skills”. At first this was mumbo jumbo stuff that got in
the way of adventure, but as time went on I saw instructors getting their groups doing things I could never get my students
doing and thus prompted the most important question of all…
I wonder how I can do that
One of my favourite coaching sessions I have ever delivered happened last winter in a
swimming pool in the new forest last year. The structure of the pool session was the first
thing that impressed me. My job was to coach the club members coaching the new comers
in the art of rolling and capsizing safely, a wonderful system of learning if you ask me. On
this particular night a new comer in fancy kayak shorts, the latest thermal, paddle top and a
shiny new set of carbon paddles strutted in from the changing rooms, walked straight pass the
club coaches and made a direct line to me. His introduction me was something like “I’m here
because I can’t roll! This is my third rolling session with the same number of clubs and this is
my last chance before I give it up totally!!”
WOW, I thought, I wonder what’s going on here. I like a challenge and my brain started to
formulate a plan of attack to meet this challenge, and it was a challenge.
I did the jumping through hoops to see the history in his paddling and I have to say I was
impressed. On top of the water he demonstrated solid skills, so I moved on to the hip flicking
to see how this was. To my surprise this was amazing too, he seemed to one of those people
who could hip flick just using his little finger on the side bar of the pool! I had to ask “are you
sure you can’t roll” nope he said and showed me the failed attempt. Racking my brain a
little, this is what the evidence was telling me and showing me:
1. great hip flick
2. great high brace
3. great water confidence
4. great blade awareness
5. no roll
I’m coming to the conclusion that maybe some thing psychological is holding him back like a
limiting belief, which in my experience takes time to coach and I get the feeling this will be his
last session of kayaking ever if he doesn’t roll. One idea pops into my mind and to this day I
don’t know where it stemmed from. It may be the fact that this guy, not being able to roll, had
all the equipment but seemed to not be happy with his kayaking.
I asked him to show me the best hip flick he could from the metal bar that runs along the side
of the pool. With a tut he reminded me that he had already shown me this and reluctantly did
it. I asked him to do the other side, and he did. I asked him to capsize away from the bar,
find it and roll up effectively doing a complete roll, then asked him to do it on the other side.
All absolutely fine, more than fine-it was perfect.
What is NLP
NLP is a bit like an owners manual
for your brain! At school we learn
wonderful things such as history
and algebra but we don’t learn much
about how to feel good and have
great relationships.
From the point of view of a kayak
coach this help us in two ways:
1. It provides us the skills to
manage our coaching
relationships efficiently and
effectively for the benefit of the
people we coach
2. When our beliefs and behaviours
reflect the training we provide,
we become effective role models
for students to model and learn
from.
This is when students learn effective
skills that will positively affect their
future.
Tony Baker
07833 096 875
tonybaker865@msn.com
I then grab his paddle which is the same thickness to the metal bar that runs alongside the
pool, I grab three other people and ask them hold his paddle firmly in place at exactly the
same height as the metal bar that runs along the side of the pool. I ask him to repeat the
exercise treating the paddle just like the metal bar and he looks at me with a very patronising
look as if to say of course I can do this, but he couldn’t. In fact he swam out of his boat
and blamed me for moving the bar, and tried again. And again he failed and for the first time
generally looked puzzled. I grabbed an ainsworth k-100 paddle with the metal shaft, repeated
the exercise and had success.

For those people out there who know something about NLP the process this man has been through over his time of learning to roll
was anchoring…in fact we all go through this process. In this instance success (great hip flick, timing etc) was anchored to the
feel of a metal pole in his hands such as the bar in the side of the pool and beginner paddles. So when he was learning in the pool
with centre kit he was on a positive and steep learning curve, it was this that was committed to muscle memory and the sense of
achievement was anchored. With this feeling he was inspired to go out and buy all the fancy equipment and by chance stumbled
into a plateau in his learning. Feeling like he wasn’t learning he became frustrated he anchored undesired emotions such as
failure, and disappointment to the feel of his new equipment and his carbon paddle.
As you can imagine he couldn’t believe his body could react in two completely different ways just by what he was holding and after
trying to prove me wrong by making it work with the carbon paddles he gave in and I explained what I thought was holding him
back. I gave him several exercises that had aims to breaking and collapsing the anchor point.
The cherry on the cake as a coach was I purposely gave him little attention as he needed to be free of coaching and play with
the exercises, plus I had four other coaches to coach and he had already taken up half an hour of my time. So on the pack down
some one shouted “last five minutes” and he raced over to me in his boat and said “thanks, but I still can’t roll…you haven’t fixed
anything”
I then said, “remember back to your first pool session where success was everywhere…now have a go at rolling” and with that he
rolled, came up and his jaw was on his spray deck. I left his jaw there for almost a minute and watched his mind try to make sense
of what was going on. He asked if he could do it again and I suggested he’d leave it there for today.
By allowing him to revisit the period of his paddling where he was having huge amounts of success, and collapsing unhelpful
anchor points, we were able to create the start of a new, more useful anchor point.
In a nutshell for those who are new to NLP and find themselves wondering what I am talking about, an anchor point is like your
favourite song. You hear the tune or some words and it takes you straight back to the time this song is important to you.
An anchor point is the unconscious change in state or behaviour that is triggered from a stimulus like smell, sound, taste, touch or
sight.
How do i learn more /
There are various ways to learn NLP, the simplest way is to ask the right question… I wonder how they do that From that
question we shift our belief and actively seek out people to model, success stories and consciously or unconsciously work this into
our behaviour.
Books and audio CD’s give valuable insights and provide food for thoughts and most importantly new ideas to play with.
Like myself if you are a hands on person there are courses all over the country, some accredited, some in work shop format.
First Aid
All active Coaches have a responsibility to maintain a current first aid award, to ensure they
can look after paddlers in their care. Coaches sign a declaration upon registration for our
Coaching qualifications accepting this responsibility. Holding a valid first aid award is also part
of the BCU Coach Update Scheme; Coaches who meet these requirements are recognized
by the BCU as being active and up-to-date.
What do I need to do
Ensure that your Home Nation has seen a copy of your First Aid Certificate. They will check it
is one of our recognised courses, and record the expiry date on your membership record. This
is applicable to all BCU Coaches with the exception of BCU UKCC Level 1 Coaches.
What courses are recognised
The BCU Website has a list of acceptable first aid training courses. If your qualification is not
listed a copy of the syllabus will need to be submitted along with details of the course length
and the training provider to the British Canoe Union for approval. Checks will be made that
the training needs are delivered by a recognised provider and includes within the syllabus
general first aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).
How long does my First Aid Training Course need to be
The minimum requirements for course length are listed below:
5
Serving military personnel,
police officers, fire brigade,
ambulance, personnel, doctors,
nurses and physiotherapists are
regarded as being currently first
aid trained. However they still
need to produce a recognized
first aid certificate.
All our policies dovetail together
to help Coaches and Paddlers
and assume a level of first aid
knowledge.
ON LINE CHILD PROCTECTION COURSE
This new training course provides an easy way to access the basic training requirement for
volunteers, coaches and staff involved in Paddlesport but who are not working regularly or
alone with children*. Avoiding the time and cost required to travel to and attend courses.
The course covers basic awareness training, explains best practice, and what to do if you have a
concern regarding child protection.
This training course is suitable for:
• all coaches who do not work regularly with children*
• Event Officials (as designated by the Event Welfare Officer)
• Polo Referees
• BCU Committee members
*coaches who work regularly with children should attend the 3 hour Sports Coach UK
Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop or equivalent (see above)
To access the course go to the Safeguarding section of your Home Nation website.

CHILD PROTECTION TRAINING FOR COACHES - UPDATE
The BCU are committed to ensuring that any young person participating in Paddlesport can do so free from harm or abuse and
as part of this we have now achieved the Advanced Standard for Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport. Training is a key
element of the Standards and a requirement for this section is that staff and volunteers are provided with opportunities to learn
how to recognise and respond to concerns about child abuse.
This requirement came into effect in 2007, however the BCU recognised that for existing coaches there was a need to phase this
in over a realistic time scale and we therefore allowed 3 years for coaches to undertake the necessary training. We also
appreciated that with the many demands on coaches’ time that a quick and easy way to do this was required and as a result have
now introduced an on line child protection training course.
The BCU Child Protection Steering Group have recently reviewed the required training for coaches to include the new on line
course and the following outlines what training existing coaches must undertake by 31st December 2010. There are many options
for training – and whilst the sports specific is recommended we have included at the end of this piece details of what equivalent
training is accepted.
Minimum Training Requirement
The minimum requirement is a basic awareness course which can be accessed through a distance learning scheme or web based
learning. The BCU new Paddlesafe On line Child Protection Course is designed to support individuals to meet this requirement
and reduce the cost involved. This can be accessed through your home nation website.
Who should do this Existing Level 2 Coaches and above who do not work regularly or alone with children.
Basic Safeguarding Workshops
The most popular and widely delivered workshop is the sports coach UK ‘Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport’ (SPC)
course. Another option is the SCA Child Protection workshop. Details of how to access these workshops will be on your Home
Nation website – in England workshops can be accessed through your local County Sport Partnership and in 2010 we aim to run
some workshops specifically for coaches. Some coaches may have already attended a Safeguarding course through their local
authority. Whilst this is not usually specific to sport it may be recognized as an equivalent to the SPC course. (See Equivalent
training below)
Who should do this Coaches and volunteers working regularly or alone with children, BCU Coach Training Directors, BCU
Regional and Local Coaching Officers.
New coaches
Will now be required to have evidence of undertaking some form of child protection training in line with 1 or 2 above prior to their
Level 2 Assessment.
EQUIVALENT CHILD PROTECTION TRAINING GUIDANCE
Minimum Training requirement
An equivalent to the BCU Paddlesafe on line resource is the NSPCC EduCare Child Protection Awareness programme – Keeping
Children Safe in Sport. This offers basic introduction to safeguarding and child protection but is not a substitute for where direct
delivery is required. For individuals who are unable to access the Paddlesafe online course we recommend this as an
alternative. It is the same programme currently used by Scouting UK. Unfortunately there is no BCU subsidy for this course
which currently costs £27.50+ VAT. More details from http://www.educare.co.uk.
Individuals who work regularly or alone with children are required to attend the sports coach UK Safeguarding and
Protecting Children workshop or a basic safeguarding workshop as described below.
Basic Safeguarding Workshops
We appreciate that individuals may have undertaken safeguarding courses through work or such like. The following
indicates the requirements for a course to be recognized as an equivalent.
1. Courses must involve a minimum of 3 hours direct delivery.
2. A certificate from the course is available to prove attendance.
3. The course includes the following training outcomes so that coaches are able to:
• identify situations and practices that might constitute either poor practice or possible abuse
• identify ways of dealing with your own feelings about child abuse and state what constitutes neglect, physical,
sexual and emotional abuse
• recognise the signs and symptoms of abuse and appreciate why reporting it is often so difficult
• identity appropriate action if a child discloses he/she has been abused
• identity appropriate action if abuse is suspected and explain the role and responsibilities of
other experts (e.g. police, social services)
• Describe appropriate practice that reduces the likelihood of abuse occurring.
New Canoe England Coaching
Appointment
Russ Smith
National Competition
Development Coach.
I am BCU Level 5 inland kayak coach, a past
British slalom team paddler /coach/helper
and have worked at the Teesside white water
course for the last 14 years. Although slalom
is my inspiration I regard myself as a paddler
of disciplines and after passing my L5 coach
have had a foot in both the competitive and the
recreational camps.
Working in this new post I see as an
opportunity to forge some past and present
ideas into the foundations for the future
competition coach development and education
program.
I see it as the starting block of a long term
coach development program that links in to the
UKCC coaching programs.
It is an opportunity to identify and recruit
talented coaches from all disciplines and draw
on the vast amount of knowledge they have
and also make available competition coach
resources to everyone that may have a need of
them. By offering support to the Canoe
England coaching team, national/regional
networks and using them to help identify,
recruit and train future tutors and mentors
we can set up a national competition coach
network.
Links to the World Class programs are vital
so that we have some ability to cascade good
practice down into the clubs, tutors, mentors,
paddlers and if needed be able to offer
support/input, if required,in the opposite
direction.
I think that the new Competition coach levels
need to have more single blade content to
keep in line with the new 1 and 2 star awards
and the UKCC L1/l2 coach awards.
I am looking forward to helping build,
coordinate and delivering a better and more
up to date competition coach program that
paddlers can use to steer themselves through
their LTPD, that coaches from all disciplines
can access and parents could use for
guidance.
Coaching Women and Girls in Paddlesport
WE SEEK YOUR OPINION
As part of the Canoe England Women and Girls project we are considering a new workshop/ module on coaching Women and
Girls in Paddlesport.
For many of you, you may not feel this is necessary or worth separating from general coach education, however, research has
shown that this is an area that can greatly affect the participation and retention of females within a sport- particularly in male
dominated sports such as Paddlesport. As the main objective of this project is to increase the number of females in the sport,
we see this as an important area to work on.
Currently 22% of updated BCU coaches and 23% of current CE members are female. We are aware that with all the recent
changes in coaching there are more and more demands and costs placed upon you as a coach; therefore we seek your
opinion as to how you would like to see such a course delivered.
The possible options would be:
A. An attended workshop, similar to Coaching Young Paddlers.
B. A web based course, similar to Long Term Paddler Development (LTPD) online course.
C. A resource to be read in your own time, similar to LTPD book.
D. Combination of above
If you have an opinion on how you would most value such a course please provide feedback to
womenandgirls@bcu.org.uk.
Do you have coach education/ tutor training background
Do you know the qualities needed to successfully coach women and girls
Would you like to be involved in writing a Coaching Women and Girls in Paddlesport course
If you answered YES to ALL of the above please contact womenandgirls@bcu.org.uk to register your interest with
of your background in this area.
