From the Community Management
Board Meetings
Terry DaSilva
Community Manager
There seems to be some confusion
between the monthly Executive
Board of Directors meetings and the
Annual Members meetings.
NRS116.31083 states that meetings
of the Executive Board, or as we call
it, the regular Board of Directors
meeting, must be held at least once
every 90 days. Sun City Anthem
conducts the Executive Board meetings
every month on the fourth
Thursday of the month except in November when it is
moved up one week due to Thanksgiving. The NOTICE
of the meeting is published in our monthly newsletter, the
Spirit, where you will find the time and place of the
Executive Board meeting. If an agenda is not included in
the Spirit, then the date and location where the agenda
may be obtained is printed in the Spirit. However, several
years ago, the member comment section of the agenda
was at the end of the agenda. Due to requests from Las
Vegas homeowners, the member comment section was
moved to the beginning of the agenda and this became
law. A homeowner may record on audiotape or any other
means of sound reproduction, a meeting of the Executive
Board, unless the Executive Board is meeting in Executive
Session, if the homeowner, before recording the meeting,
provides notice of intent to record the meeting to the
members of the Executive Board and to the other homeowners
who are in attendance at the meeting.
any Members meeting, NOTICE of the meeting, including
the agenda, shall be sent by U.S. mail to the mailing
address on record or any other mailing address as designated
in writing by the homeowner. This yearly
November meeting to ratify the budget is always accompanied
by a budget summary and an agenda. A homeowner
may record on audiotape or any other means of
sound reproduction, a Member’s meeting, if the homeowner,
before recording the meeting, provides notice of
intent to record the meeting to the homeowners who are
in attendance at the meeting.
"Reminder Notice" - This is a good time for me to
remind our homeowners that the next assessments are due
July 1 and payment must be received no later than July 30.
Please be reminded that the late fees for assessments are
now at $25.00 per month. So I urge you to please mark
your calendars for each quarter that the assessments are
due and send the payment in at least 10 days before the
end of the due date. ♦
NRS116.3108 states that Members meetings are meetings
of the owners and must be held at least once each year.
After our budget process, a Members meeting is held every
year in November to ratify the budget for the following
year. The special requirements for this meeting state that
State of the Association
Mike Dixon
Outgoing Board
President
In this, my last Spirit article as Board President, I’d like to reflect on the
accomplishments of the first Board made up entirely of SCA residents. While
this year has had its challenges, I’m pleased that under my leadership the Board
maintained focus on solving problems, rather than being distracted by those few
who wanted the Board to assign blame for the past. Now that my year as Board
President has ended, I am proud to pass the gavel to the new Board President
knowing that SCA is better in every respect than when the gavel was passed to
me a year ago.
The first thing this Board needed to do was to improve communications with
the community. Last year only Board members were privy to the details of the
business of the Association. This Board immediately instituted monthly Town
Hall meetings, held a week before our Board meetings, to give residents a new opportunity to discuss
Association business with the Board. We’ve also begun preparing and publishing drafts of the Board
agenda for distribution at the Town Hall meetings.
We’ve also initiated Presidents
Reports which are distributed by e-
mail to keep members informed on
current events and issues in SCA.
Members can sign up to receive
these mails by logging onto our web
site, www.sca-hoa.com, clicking
“eMail Bulletins,” and clicking on
“all eMail bulletins.” We’ve also
increased the number of Association
documents on our web site, so
When the City came to us about a
secondary trail for the Anthem East Trail System,
they addressed our residents’ concerns, and we
approved the trail.
We now have frequent conversations with
City representatives to make sure the interests
of Sun City Anthem are protected.
it now includes Board and Committee agendas, minutes, and documents previously available only in
the Board Book in our membership office.
We’ve opened many meetings to the membership. Members can now attend and observe Board
Book Reviews, committee workshops, and many other meetings. All our business is now conducted in
open session, and Board discussion of Association matters is always done at Board meetings.
Our relationship with the City of Henderson has never been more cordial. We have invited City representatives
to attend and address both Town Hall meetings and our Board meetings. When our residents
needed City help to address the proposed church school, they worked with us to have the project
moved. When the City came to us about a secondary trail for the Anthem East Trail System, they
addressed our residents’ concerns, and we approved the trail. We now have frequent conversations with
City representatives to make sure the interests of Sun City Anthem are protected.
One of the most important things any HOA can do is to work together. A year ago, each of our
committees was isolated; all communication had to go through the board. To make the process more
efficient, this Board authorized representatives between committees. Now the Finance Committee can
communicate with Lifestyle or P&G without first going through the Board. Communication is simplified
and the time required to get things accomplished is shortened. We’ve also established joint work
groups to address things like Reserve studies and refurbishment of the Anthem Center.
Sun City Anthem • June 2008 7

From the Board President ...
Continued from page 7.
As permitted in our CC&Rs, this Board also authorized the
Covenants Committee to levy fines directly. This allows the Board
to be an appellate body, giving homeowners two independent hearings
on any fine. We changed the Election Committee to install a
resident rather than a Board member as chairman, and we established
the Plans and Processes Committee, that is charged with
developing a five-year plan for the Association.
A year ago, the greatest irritant in Sun City Anthem was our
Trumpets restaurant and its operator S&D Cafe V. Today S&D is
gone, evicted because of the actions of this Board. Our Board
Secretary focused her attention on Association records, which were
delivered to us by Del Webb in less than perfect condition. This
effort produced sufficiently organized records so that we could provide
all documentation our attorneys needed to defend us against
S&D and to support our counter claims. S&D’s lawsuit against
SCA and our counter suit are now scheduled for trial in September.
If we don’t have delays, we hope that this entire episode will be
behind us by year-end. And the best part is the Board has negotiated
an agreement with our Directors and Officers insurance carrier,
CNA, to cover most of our legal fees in this matter.
The Trumpets Work Group, a committee of SCA residents chartered
by the Board to solicit proposals for our restaurant, has completed
their work. The Board is now engaged in lease negotiations
with the restaurant operator they recommended. If negotiations
can be completed successfully, we will soon reopen our restaurant.
One of the most daunting challenges we faced this year was our
finances. Because each of our financial issues required in-depth
analysis, we addressed them one at a time. Treasurer Roz Berman
spent June and July collecting and organizing the records for the
Villas, resulting in July and August meetings with the Villa owners.
July through October was dedicated to preparing our 2008 budget,
which was adopted and ratified in October and November.
Following this, the Board contracted with Diversified Facility
Services to produce a Reserve study as of May 31, 2005, the date of
transition. This “look-back” showed that Villa reserves are properly
funded, but that Association reserves were several hundred thousand
dollars short. We will now go back to Pulte, asking them to
deposit additional monies into our reserve. Any recoveries we
obtain will reduce future assessments for our members.
While our Treasurer was focused on our main financial issues,
our Finance Committee worked with Roz and our management
company, RMI, to improve financial reporting, solve accounting
problems we inherited from Del Webb, and to improve collection
of delinquent accounts. The success of this effort was shown in the
first quarter of this year when we collected more money from our
delinquencies than we added.
While our list of accomplishments is significant, there remains
some “Unfinished Business” for the new Board to address.
Repeated delays in the start of construction of Recreation Center 3
have been a source of frustration for all of us. New construction
bids have been requested, and we don’t expect further delays once
these bids are accepted by Pulte. While the Trumpets lawsuit is
moving forward, the new Board must continue to defend our position
firmly, and to press our claims vigorously.
In addition, the new Board will face new issues as our community
as our amenities age. Hopefully, none will be as daunting as
Trumpets and Rec3.
Regardless of the issues faced by this and future Boards, we must
all insist that common courtesy and respectful discourse become
the hallmark of all SCA forums so that differing viewpoints continue
to be freely expressed and heard. ♦
ARC – Thursdays, 9:00 a.m.
The Architecture Review Committee (ARC) has been developing
Amendments to the Sun City Design Guidelines since early last year.
There have been numerous committee workshops and a review with the
Board. The new Amendments were approved by the Board at the March
27, 2008 Board of Directors Meeting. They are focused on clarifying
how our Design Guidelines are interpreted and applied by the ARC, as
well as updating areas such as hardscape, sitting/viewing platforms and
walls and fences. For example, there have been many issues on walls and
fences as homeowners have added casitas, new courtyards and sought
more privacy. We have tried to bring the Guidelines more current with
the changing needs and issues in our community.
The revised Guidelines will be mailed to all homeowners on CD. All
The 2008 Elections are over and the new Board Members have
been seated.
The Election Committee would like to thank the resident volunteers
who assisted with the Ballot Counting for the 2008 Elections.
We could not have done it without their assistance.
The Election Committee’s year ends May 31; therefore, we will
have three members leaving us who have served three years on the
committee. We want to thank Lorraine Kennet, Kristi Lonsinger and
Rich Baker for their hard work on this committee to help make each
year’s elections flow even better. After Board approval in May, we will
be welcoming newly selected members to our committee at the June
meeting.
The committee will be working over the next few months to update
the SCA Election Manual, calendar of events and budget in preparation
for the 2009 Elections.
It’s getting to be that time of year again —- development of the annual
budgets! The first step in the process is the Board of Directors establishing
the “2008 Budget Development Guidance / Objectives.” A workshop
for this will be held in early June, probably on June 6. These
Budget Guidelines set the parameters for the entire budget development
process. Check the Association website (www.sca-hoa.com) for
the time and place of this meeting, and the 20 or so other 2009 budget
development meetings that will take place in June through
September. In October there will be budget workshops with the
Board, and the presentation to the Board of Directors at their October
23 meeting. The 2009 Budgets will be presented to the residents at the
November 20 meeting.
The Finance Committee is always looking for volunteers who have
a strong background in accounting and/or financial management, particularly
with a CPA certification. Contact Finance Committee
Chairman Don Manning if you would like more information. The
other members of the Finance Committee are Vice-Chair Joe De Meo,
Shirley Cheri, Carol Haggin, Guy Lalouche, Robert Murphy, Rich
Pendleton and Jack Troia.
All Finance Committee meetings are open to the public. We
encourage residents to attend these meetings to understand more about
the financial workings of our community.
2007 Crime/Accident STATS
By Dave Servello, SCA Security Patrol Chief
villages have 4 incidents or less. The five villages with the highest
incidents of specific crimes are: Black Mt. = Burglary 9 & 3
Vandalism; Mt. View = 5 Burglary; Tall Mesa = 6 Burglary;
Pinnacle = 3 Vehicle Break-ins; and Desert Sky = 3 Vehicle Breakins.
Most assaults are committed on Saturday. Most burglaries are
committed on Thursdays. Most domestic violence is committed
on Mondays and Tuesdays. Most grand larcenies are committed
on Thursdays, and more vandalism is committed on Saturdays
and Sundays. The days with the highest incidents of crime are
Thursday = 32 of 166 incidents; Saturday = 29 of 166 incidents,
and Wednesday = 25 of 166 incidents. Most SCA crimes are
committed between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.. SCA
showed a 10% to 20% decrease in crime from 10/07 thru 03/08.
[Left to right] Security Patrol volunteers: Rick Jannell,
Dave Servello, and Jerry Malone assisted with the traffic and
crowd control at the recent Neighborhood Parking Lot Sale.
I have been asked by a number of residents to write an article
in the Spirit Magazine on crime and accident statistics. Our
Crime and Accident Statistics for 2007 are as follows:
Crimes: According to the Henderson Police Department (HPD)
Sun City Anthem had a total of 166 incidents of crime. I track
only what I consider to be the more serious crimes (those that
impact SCA residents directly). I should also add that our
Security Patrol Incident Reports identify more vehicle break-ins
than do the HPD reports. These records reflect there were:
Burglary = 45; Vehicle Thefts (Break-ins) = 22; Grand Theft
(Larceny) = 14; Stolen Vehicle = 8; Domestic Violence = 9,
Suicide Threats/Attempts = 10, Vandalism = 11. SCA Villages
with the highest incidents of crime are: Mt. View = 30; Black
Mt. = 23; Tall Mesa = 10; Anthem Village (Vons area) = 10;
Shadow Canyon = 8; Pinnacle = 7; and Big Sky = 6. All other
Accidents: SCA experienced 147 accidents in 2007. Twentyone
of the 147 accidents involved injuries, and 17 involved hit
and run incidents. Areas with the highest accident rates are:
Reunion & SCA Parkway/Drive = 15; Country Club & SCA
Parkway/Drive = 15; SCA Parkway & Anthem Drive Intersection
= 7; Bicentennial & SCA Parkway/Drive = 5; Volunteer & SCA
Parkway/Drive = 6; and Hampton Rd. & SCA Parkway/Drive =
13. The Vons shopping mall area is clearly the most dangerous
with 28 accidents (4 H&R’s). The HPD issued 95 citations: 12
follow too close, 13 failure to yield right of way, 7 unsafe lane
change, and 15 failure to provide full time attention. Age groups
involved in accidents: 80’s = 4, 70’s = 14, teenagers = 9, 20’s =29,
30’s = 29, and 60’s = 29. Three of the 147 vehicle accidents
resulted in deaths, and 65% of all the accidents occurred on the
SCA Parkway/Drive. The five traffic light locations (Volunteer,
Bicentennial, Hampton Rd., Country Club, Eastern (Vons area),
and Reunion have the highest incidents of accidents.
The SCASP is working with HPD to improve our statistical
program for 2008. At the present time the SCA Property and
Grounds committee is studying the line of sight issues at some
intersections along the SCA Parkway/Drive. You may contact the
committee for additional information, or to express your opinion
with respect to the Parkway/Drive. ♦
EMERGENCY
PREPAREDNESS GROUP
Meets June 9 at 3:00 p.m.,
Anthem Center
263-6378 retiredone@cox.net
Emergency Preparedness was established in 2002 as a SDA
Committee by the Board of Directors. In 2005 we became a Group
joining the other two Service Organizations, namely Security Patro
and Community Service Club.
Though our official designation has changed over the years, our
Mission Statement has not. It is: “To provide for: The organization,
personnel, facilities, equipment and communication required to be
activated in the event of a community declared emergency, to
ensure that the health and welfare of the residents of Sun City
Anthem are addressed.”
How do we try to accomplish this Mission Statement At the
time of a declared emergency, our Block Captains and District
Coordinators are equipped with radios to communicate with each
other and the EOC (Emergency Operation Center); the EOC is
equipped with radios and TVs to communicate outside of SCA;
establish two first aid centers, staffed with doctors and nurses.
Medical personnel can be dispatched to the field as required; CERT
(Civilian Emergency Response Team) has trained (over 200 of your
neighbors) which will be utilized as need dictates; and through
periodic drills to help keep us prepared.
Our Vision Statement reads: “Our vision is one of self-help and
mutual aid with our residents being well prepared, well informed
and in active support of achieving our mission.”
We try to educate SCA residents to be prepared through literature
(found on the kiosks in Anthem Center and Independence
Center; Channel 99, Red Cross first aid and CPR training (now
handled by the Fitness Center); sponsoring CERT training through
the Las Vegas Fire Department; and guest speakers.
We now ask you To Help Us Help You. There are three main
ways: volunteer for the EPG, sign up for CERT training and suggestions
on what else the EPG can do to help you. Send your suggestions
to retiredone@cox.net, with the subject EPG Suggestions.
We are looking forward to hearing from you.
Enforcement Manager
Friendly Neighborhood Reminders...
Spring is definitely here and so are the weeds! Many homeowners I
speak to are not aware that weeds between their wall and the sidewalk
are their responsibility. This area is normally part of your lot. Please
take the time to patrol your lot and take weed eradication measures. We
are getting a high volume of complaints from your neighbors who expect
us to enforce the “Lot Maintenance” requirement in the CC&R. Once
we have a written complaint we must take action to notify the owner.
Usually, once notified, the owners bring the property into compliance. If
not, the case goes to the Covenants Committee Hearing Panel and fines
may be imposed. Your cooperation in maintaining your lot is required
and appreciated. Please remember to arrange for lot maintenance if
you will be gone from the property for extended periods of time.
Your neighbors will surely appreciate it!
Also, we are having some problems with homeowners who do not provide the
Christine Wikoff
Enforcement Department
Manager, 614-5859
christine.wikoff@scacai.com
Association with their current mailing address. Please make sure you check with the
Membership Desk if you think there may be some confusion about what address is set up in the system for your mail. They will give
you a form to fill out to change your mailing address in the system, or you may access the form on the SCA website and e-
mail it. This is the only way you can be certain the change was made. A phone call will not do it (has to be in writing)! It is
your responsibility to provide a good mailing address. Some homeowners do not provide an up to date address and then appeal the
fines imposed for violations because they did not receive the mail. These cases are usually denied as it is your responsibility to provide
an accurate mailing address. ♦ — Christine Wikoff, Enforcement Manager
SNWA Releases Water Quality Report
The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA), as the provider of water throughout
Southern Nevada, is as concerned about water quality as its customers. To assure consumers
about the reliability of treatments used to protect them from water-borne illnesses, the Las
Vegas Valley Water District will release its annual quality report in June.
As always, the SNWA continues to surpass federal drinking water guidelines, as mandated
by the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) of 1974 (and amendments made in 1986 and 1996).
This means treating the water while simultaneously protecting its source.
Water delivered from Lake Mead first goes through ozonation, a process that kills potentially
harmful microorganisms. A multistage filtration system then removes particles from the
water and finally, a miniscule amount of chlorine is added to protect pipelines from corrosion.
The SNWA tests thousands of water samples daily, completing up to a half-million analyses.
Testers look for 120 regulated and unregulated potential contaminants, many of which are not found in Las Vegas’ water.
To protect Lake Mead from contaminants, the SNWA has teamed with the Clean Water Coalition and other organizations to monitor
potential outside sources of contamination. To protect customers further, backflow prevention assemblies are installed all throughout
the valley to keep pollutants from flowing into drinking water.
The SNWA stays ahead of the curve by removing an exponentially larger contaminant concentration than required by the SDWA.
Beyond that, the SNWA has researched concentrations of pharmaceuticals in public water for more than a decade – while the issue has only
recently become prominent in national news. Due to recent technological advancements, contaminants in water can be detected into the
quadrillionth decimal point range.
It is important to keep in mind that the presence of a contaminant is not necessarily harmful to humans; rather, the concentration determines
toxicity – just as too much iron can lead to bloodstream poisoning, though smaller doses of the element have no negative effect. With
this in mind, the amount of pharmaceutical waste remnants in drinking water is comparable to a drop in 20, 2-meter (a little over 6 feet)
deep Olympic-size swimming pools. Regardless, the SNWA is still hard at work determining whether this has any effect on human metabolic
systems and if so, how to reduce the levels in Southern Nevada’s water.
as Bobbi, was born in
Chicago. She was married
for 38 years and has four
children, three grandchildren
and her poodle,
“Cloe”. She moved to Sun
City Summerlin in 1995
and worked for Del Webb as
a hostess in the sales center.
In 1999, she moved to
Anthem and began working as a monitor.
Bobbi enjoys the movies and watching Channel 40. She
enjoys long walks and looks forward to taking a few short vacations.
She is the creative soul that spruces up the ticket booth.
Keep up the good work Bobbi.
GROUP EXERCISE SURVEY –
During the month of April we asked our residents how we
were doing. Here is what you had to say.
• The majority enjoy taking classes in the morning.
• Fitness levels of our students have improved with many
improving bone density, sleeping better, losing weight,
increasing strength and lowering cholesterol. Wow, some
have even grown an inch.
• The consensus was, “Change is good, mix up the classes
with different formats to keep it interesting.”
• Suggestions were made for teachers to avoid rap music
and add more 50’s and 60’s songs.
• Start classes on time.
• Don’t lower fitness levels to accommodate one new
student.
THOUGHTS CAN HEAL YOUR BODY
Our thoughts can make us sick, and they can help us get well.
Scientists first proved a link between stress and disease in the
early half of the century. We can now measure changes in the
immune cells and the brain in ways that give us objective scientific
proof of the connection between them. At least 30% of
treatments work because we BELIEVE they will. It’s about
attitude.
Bottom line: Negative thoughts and feelings can be harmful
to the body, and who controls our thoughts WE DO.
WHAT TO DO: Adjust your mind-set to promote good
health:
TAKE A DEEP
BREATH. Try a Yoga
class at the Independence
Center.
LAUGH! For goodness
sake, relax, and don’t take
everything so seriously.
KEEP A JOURNAL.
Writing about emotionally
charged events helps us
deal with them mentally
and physically. Be sure to
include the positives.
• Give the new student options to fit their level and keep
the class at their current pace.
• Most agreed that student’s talking during classes were
disruptive, but a few hello’s and quiet good byes’ were
okay.
• Leaving before the classes are finished didn’t bother
most, but your fellow students asked that you take the
back of the room and leave quietly.
• You want a friendly teacher, but not one that talks too
much.
•Teach us about technique and remind us about our form
first.
Tuesdays, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m, Bristol Room,
Recreation Center
The Anthem Authors Club is a group of friends
that inspire, support and help each other in our writings.
This support has led to many of our club members being published
and many have thanked the Anthem Authors Club in blurbs within their
books. Being published is a wonderful thing for a writer and the following
members have achieved this success: Barbara Botch, Don Denton, Carol
Attebery, Marie D’Angelo, Mary Schramski, Curtis Patrick, Richard
Whittaker, Judy Dettre, Leon Rose, Yvonne Cloutier, Chester Parks, Sue
Schroeder, Elaine Stubbs, Helene Moore, Art
Clark, James Flick, Georgia Hubley and
Elizabeth Barhydt.
Some of our published members write novels
and non-fiction while others write articles
for magazines and other collections. We have
several writers who have completed their
memoirs and others that are just beginning.
Come and join us. We meet every Tuesday from
1:00 - 3:00 p.m. in the Bristol Room. We’ll be looking for you at our
next meeting!
those who simply want to informally play to improve their game, meet
new people and have fun.
Tournaments: Daily 8-Ball tournaments are played at 1:00 p.m. on
Monday through Friday and Women Only tournaments are held each
Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. All tournaments are held in the billiards
room located inside the Independence Center.
Membership: All Sun City Anthem Community Association members
are welcome and encouraged to join our club. If you are interested in
joining, call Club President Rex Weddle at 407-8342 or 496-5901 or
Financial Club
June 11: Meeting will feature Mr. Jeffrey Burr, a
leading estate and tax planning attorney in Nevada.
He is a former Chairman of the Section on Taxation
for the State Bar Association, and is an author on many
articles on estate and
tax planning. The Club Board of
Directors have asked Mr. Burr to focus
his presentation on IRA’s and their
impact on estate and tax planning.
There are many complicated issues surrounding
distributions as they impact
taxes and estates, so we believe this will
be a timely topic for our members.
July 9: Our speaker will be Timothy J. Truebenbach, CFP®, Regional
Director for The Keller Group Investment Management, Inc. The topic
will be “Selecting a Financial Advisor.” This presentation will cover:
1) Do I need a financial advisor at all; 2) If so, what different choices
do I have; 3) What are the differences among those choices; and 4)
How do I approach the interviews and decision Key issues covered
will include fee structure, active versus passive management, and relationship
(“fiduciary” vs. “suitability”). The Keller Group Investment
Management, Inc. is an independent wealth management firm providing
investment advisory and financial planning services to high net
worth families, trusts and business entities. They are a fee-only
Registered Investment Advisor, and currently manage in excess of $1
billion in assets.
Garden
Our 5th Annual Tour
of Sun City Gardens was a
smashing success! Fiftyfive
Sun City residents and
their guests enjoyed the
gardens of Bettye Smith,
Barbara Niblack , Fran
Mills, and Larry and Marie
Kaplan.. Many thanks to
our members, who so generously
shared their knowledge
of plants and gardening
in our Mojave desert.
The Garden Club’s next meeting will not occur until September 9,
when we will have some wonderful instruction from local gardeners.
In the interim, we are devoting this column to some helpful insights
Financial Club / Hiking & Outing
developed through experimentation and experience. The first insight -
rabbit-proof plants! Rabbits have not disturbed any of the following
plants, all of which will thrive in full sun or part shade with moderate
to little water:
1. Germander - evergreen, best planted in the fall; 2. Lavender - evergreen,
delightful fragrance; 3. Autumn Sage - plant spring or fall and cut
back severely in winter; 4. Silvermound (artemisia Schmidtiana) - evergreen,
cut back severely in winter; 5. Gopher Plant (euphorbia rigida) -
succulent, so needs very little water; 7. Lantana - wait until next spring
to plant it.“
Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata will be presented
Thursday, June 12 at 7:00 p.m.
Violetta is sung by Anna Moffo and Alfredo
by Franco Bonisolli. It has been written that
Violetta is one which Verdi might well have
composed with Moffo in mind. Possessing singular
beauty of voice and appearance, Moffo
succeeds brilliantly in fulfilling the composer’s
difficult musical and dramatic demands. It is
especially fortunate that Moffo’s celebrated portrayal has been captured
in Mario Landranchi’s cinematic treatment, a sumptuous, beautiful
and emotionally powerful film. The conductor is Giuseppi Patene,
with the orchestra and chorus of the Rome Opera House. This will be
shown with English sub-titles and we invite members and their guests
Porcelain
Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon, Anthem Center
The Porcelain Club invites new members to experience the great joy of
porcelain-making. Experienced members are available to share their
expertise on cleaning purchased greenware, firing pieces using the Club’s
kiln, and painting porcelain pieces in China paint and pastels to compete
their pieces such as Lladro figurines, chess sets, nativity sets, and dolls. The
finished piece may be appreciated as a gift or enjoyed in one’s home.
The Porcelain Club is pleased to announce that we are fortunate to
have Carole Beck join our Club. She has offered to teach our members to
paint porcelain items using China paints. She will offer her advice and
expertise on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Additional
techniques will be taught each Wednesday.
Examples of Carole’s work are in the display case in the entrance
lobby adjacent to the sewing and computer rooms. Carole does her work
free hand, but not to worry because most of us are starting out with
simple plates on which we will trace a pattern to follow. If you wish, please
bring your own porcelain item to China paint or materials may be purchased
from the Club
If you need more information or have questions about Carole’s class,
please call Diana Borja at 837-7444.
and a fun time is being planned by rally masters Dave and Sharon
Smith. Phone 896-3219 for more information.
During the months of July and August most of the RV members are
traveling to the cooler parts of the United States, so our regular, organized
rallies are not scheduled for those months, nor do we have meetings
then. There will be several members traveling together and a few
impromptu trips will most likely be scheduled.
If you are interested in joining our club, please call our membership
chairman, Jack Wiseman at 407-4042 or email him at jackwiseman@msn.com.
There is a one time initiation fee of $50.00 per rig and
annual dues of $5.00 per person. Our meetings are held in the Penn
Room at Independence Center at 4:00 p.m. on the last Tuesday of each
month, except for June, July & August. Guests are always welcome at
our meetings. Come check us out! For more information, visit our
website at www.scarvclub.com
Sewing & Quilting
The Sewing & Quilting Club has expanded the knowledge of many of
our members in the past by challenging them to try new ideas and projects.
Some club members did not know how to sew when they joined the club,
and now are avid sewers & quilters and always anxious to try everything
new that comes along. We can teach you how to sew and offer machine
training on any of our sewing machines.
One of our groups that has experienced a surge in creativity are the
Embroidery Gals. They meet on the first and third Mondays of each
month, and they’ve been busy this past year learning about machine
embroidery with their own computerized machines. We have several very
talented members who have made presentations to the club as well as outside
guest speakers. From July 24 to July 27, some of the members are
embarking on a field trip to Long Beach, California for the International
Quilt Festival. They’re looking forward to gaining new insights into this
ever-growing field of home sewing as well as touring local quilt shops. We
have more information in the Sewing Room.
Please check our web site www.scasaq.org for the latest Weekly News,
Monthly Calendar, Machine Training, and last minute class changes or
additions.
The Anthem Table Tennis Club held its first annual friendship tournament
and pizza party on Friday, April 11 at Independence Center.
This event allowed club members to become better acquainted while
having a very friendly but competitive tournament. Although participation
exceeded all expectations, there was an ample supply of pizza and soft
drinks for everyone. The actual tournament ran from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00
p.m. and events included Men’s Singles & Doubles, Women’s Singles &
Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Club members at all skill levels were
encouraged to play and everyone had fun. The winners in each category
received a gift certificate for a free lunch buffet at the Buffet of Asia.
We received many compliments about the party and tournament from
the club members.
No event of this magnitude can be so successful without the planning
and efforts of several key individuals. Special recognition goes to Charlie
Wong (Club President) and Vicky Van Fossen (Club Vice President).
Their organization, planning and coordination resulted in a very good
party and tournament. Finally, John Veyveris deserves special recognition
for organizing each of the tournament events, draws and schedules and for
tracking all of the tournament results.
Anthem residents of all abilities are welcome to join the Table Tennis
Club. Club members have access to a table tennis ball machine (robot)
that can help players improve their skills and work on a multitude of different
strokes at different speeds. Yearly dues are only $5.
Empowering Yourselves As Homeowners
Knowing your rights as a homeowner will help you effectively
deal with contractors and avoid mishaps with unlicensed contractors.
When you need to repair or remodel your home, the Nevada
State Contractors Board has advice to help make your projects run
smoothly.
The NSCB recommends that you always hire licensed contractors.
Each licensed contractor must have a five-digit license number.
You can check a contractor’s license number by contacting the
NSCB, or by visiting our website at: www.nscb.state.nv.us. All
contractors are required to display their license number on all business
cards, bids, contracts, letterheads, websites, vehicles and advertisements.
If they don’t display or have this license number, they
are probably unlicensed.
We recommend that homeowners take the initiative, and get at
least three bids and ask for references. Check these references to
ensure the contractor’s credibility and past performance. You
should obtain only written contracts and understand them before
you sign anything. Do not accept verbal offers. It is important to
keep a record of all payments made, and never pay in cash. If you
want a pool or spa built, make sure to pay the contractor only 10
percent down or $1,000 whichever is less.
As a homeowner, you have the right to file a complaint with
the Board, if workmanship issues arise. You have four years from
the time your project is completed to file a complaint.
Complaints can be filed for both licensed and unlicensed contractors.
Go to our website to download complaint forms, or call us
at: (702) 486-1100.
Unlicensed contractors will approach you to solicit bids. Be
on the look out for high-pressure sales and contractors who
demand payments in cash, or ask you to obtain or pull building
permits. A contractor should never ask you to obtain building
permits.
To help protect people from unlicensed contractors, the NSCB
has created “Homeowners Beware!” door hangers, which warn
homeowners about unlicensed contractors. These door hangers
are designed to be distributed throughout neighborhoods and are
available free of charge to any homeowner willing to help distribute
them. Please join in the NSCB campaign to help protect
homeowners from becoming victims of unlicensed contractors.
For further information, or to request free door hangers, please
contact Ranya Botros, Public Information Assistant at: (702) 486-
1165, or e-mail her at rbotros@nscb.state.nv.us.
In the state of Nevada, it is against the law to contract without
a license. The first offense is a misdemeanor, second is a gross
misdemeanor and the third is a Class E Felony. The NSCB regulates
licensing of contractors and has the duty to protect the
health, welfare and safety of the public.
The NSCB would like homeowners to empower themselves
and become aware of their rights. Don’t become another victim
of unlicensed contractors.
Ranya Botros is the Public Information Assistant with the Nevada State
Contractors Board. She can be reached at: (702) 486-1165, or e-mail her
at: rbotros@nscb.state.nv.us.
