Qualcomm and Samuel H. & Katherine Weaver French Fund
Support Mobile Medical Unit Program
Family Health Centers of San Diego thanks Qualcomm and Samuel H. &
Katherine Weaver French Fund for their generous grants to the KidCare
Express Mobile Medical Unit Program this summer. These complete
“medical clinics on wheels” provide health care services to medically
underserved children and youth at local schools and community sites.
With longstanding partners like Qualcomm and Samuel H. & Katherine
Weaver French Fund, our three KidCare Express Mobile Medical Units are
able to stay on the road, bringing needed medical care to children and
families in their neighborhood.
KidCare Express helps many local children, such as a recent elementary
school student who was referred from her PE class for foot pain. Provider
staff on the KidCare Express agreed the foot should be x-rayed and found
two small breaks. The patient was treated and is once again active during her
physical education class many thanks to the care she accessed on the KidCare
Express.
Thank you Qualcomm, and Samuel H. & Katherine Weaver French Fund
for supporting this great program!
Back to School Health Fair at
Westfield Plaza Bonita
Family Health Centers of San Diego’s
Dr. Alan Zieg Meets with
U.S. Surgeon General
It’s back to school time! For many of our pediatric
patients, this means they need immunizations and
dental screenings. It’s also a good time for parents
and siblings to get a check-up. Our Chula Vista
Family Health Center was proud to partner with
Westfield Plaza Bonita to offer these needed services
via our KidCare Express Mobile Medical Unit at the
mall on August 14. Radio Latina 104.5 FM and
Mariachi Chula Vista provided great music while
people waited, and almost 200 kids and adults were
served. That’s a lot of vaccines and health screenings!
Family Health Centers of San Diego’s Chief of OB/
GYN Services, Dr. Alan Zieg, was invited to meet
with U.S. Surgeon General VADM Regina M.
Benjamin in early August. The Surgeon General
and Dr. Zieg discussed the nationwide campaign to
fight childhood obesity and key challenges facing
community health centers. Dr. Zieg shared his
experiences as a National Health Service Corps
Scholar and the reasons why he chooses to work at
Family Health Centers of San Diego.

Great Support for Pediatric Waiting Room Reading Program
Family Health Centers of San Diego would like to thank CareFusion’s Hispanic Organization for
Leadership and Awareness (HOLA) members and Nancie & Hana Helders for generously donating
hundreds of books to our Pediatric Waiting Room Reading program.
CareFusion’s HOLA (Hispanic Organization for
Leadership and Awareness) members organized a
book drive and collected approximately 1,000
children’s books (in both English and Spanish)
from San Diego CareFusion employees. The
books were then delivered by the truck load for
distribution to our pediatric waiting room
bookshelves.
Many thanks CareFusion!
Nancie Helders, age 9, asked her birthday guests
to bring a book to donate at her birthday party and
collected over two hundred books. She and her
sister, Hana Helders, age 7, also generously went
through their books and added a few favorites that
they have out grown. Nancie and Hana delivered
the books to City Heights Family Health Center
and placed the books in the waiting room.
Nice work Nancie and Hana!
If you would like to donate your books or organize a new or gently used book drive to gather books for our
Pediatric Waiting Room Reading Program please call 619-515-2562.
Congressman Duncan Hunter Visits Chase Avenue Family Health Center
The staff at Chase Avenue Family Health Center welcomed
Congressman Duncan Hunter to their site during the August
Congressional recess.
Family Health Centers of San Diego staff Jennette
Lawrence, Adriana Cortez, Raquel Zamarripa, David
Fleming, Congressman Duncan Hunter, Teresa Olds, Nancy
Vargas-Ortiz, and Abigail Cardona meet at Chase Avenue
Family Health Center.
Congressman Hunter came to learn more about how the health
center provides cost effective services to uninsured and
underserved families. He talked with providers David Fleming,
PA and Chris Gordon, MD about the importance of the walk-in
clinic and the types of working families that call Chase Avenue
Family Health Center their medical home. A few pediatric
patients gave him a demonstration of how much they are enjoying
their newly constructed play area in the clinic courtyard!
