COMPANION ANIMALS IN EVERYDAY SOCIETY, AND THE USE OF ANIMALS
IN IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF HUMANS.
Dr. Zulch delivered a very interesting talk on the role of pets, and especially how
they can improve the quality of human life. First the reasons for owning pets were
discussed. Emphasis was placed on assistance and therapy dogs. She also looked
at the human / animal interaction, and the role of the veterinary profession in the
human/animal bond.
Pet selection is a very important issue and can have a great influence on dog or cat
behaviour. Other issues that were discussed included: Normal canine and feline
behaviour, canine and feline communication, socialisation, training and meeting the
needs of both human and animal. The loss of a pet is a very sensitive issue, and Dr.
