DOZENS IN HOSPITAL AFTER BUSSELTON DRIVE-IN
ROD RUN Malaga, March 2007.
The casualty toll rises from self inflicted injuries caused by rodders
who didn’t attend the Busselton Drive-in Rod Run, kicking themselves
too hard, for missing WA’s premier over-night rod run. Lesser injuries
have been received by some of the attending rodders for patting
themselves on the back after such mobility disappeared from their
shoulder blades years ago. No elbow injuries were reported. It seems
that these joints are still very flexible and finely honed on some rodders.
FROM THE EDITORS DEN
Hello rodders, welcome back to the
comfort zone. You won’t find anything
in this edition to test your well being, so
relax and enjoy it.
I cannot complain about nothing to
write about this month, just lack of time
to do it. The Willys will be shelved for a 2-3 weeks this
month while I create this master piece of literature and do
some preparations for the Moora Easter Run. That means it
will miss the March TAC check and along with that the
Easter Run.....Bummer. That said, eight people at the
Busselton run asked me where the Volvo was. I was
wondering why in hell I was building the Willys afterall. It
was only a short spell of wondering, though I bet you lookalike
me-too fordies still probably don’t know the answer!
This edition has some more contributions from Gibby
from the SummSun Festival and the Igglesden Memory
Tour . Thanks Neil.
The big event since last Klaxon was the Busselton
Drive In Run. Another fantastic weekend put together by
the Mudflaps (sorry, the Radiators club) See inside for the
scoop story.
We all know how time slips away from us, don’t we
Well I am starting to think that the club’s aim to race on the
salt next year is going to be a midnight oil affair to make it.
The team boss, Lars Salty Anderson is also currently pre-

occupied with the new Auto One store preparations,
that also involve Les Baldy Ryan and Garry Cuboid
Curnow. Needless to point out that everyone is busy these
days. It will need a concerted effort to make the 2008
speed week. Hands up again who wants to be in the team
and support group. Talk to Lars.
Easter is approaching too. The Moora Run is going to
be very great. There is still a couple of rooms available at
the WCSRC Moora head quarters, so if you have pussy
footed about, you may still be in luck if you don’t want to
camp. Call me now. 0400 1939 09. Leave a message if
necessary.
For those of you without Alzheimers not enjoying the “new”
Moora information pages repeating in each Klaxon for the last
few months, I promise to take them out next month and clear up
more room for your contributions.
Well what’s on after Easter Are we dreaming of heated
sheds again as the temperatures drop and the rodding activities
go quiet. There is nothing on the books until the Fathers Day
show. I will have to make my own fun when the coupe hits the
road! Don’t forget the Saturday morning rodders breakfast at the
clubrooms. Spread the word about that one.
Last word, the AGM will be here soon and we need a new
secretary to replace Blossom. Is it your turn to do this easy job
Cheers for now. Take care until next time.
Extreme E
PS. Don’t hang onto a metallic timing light incorrectly connected by
Garry Curnow. When the engine starts, it creates an amazing arm
action in time with Garry’s laughter while he pretends to be deaf to all
calls of “TURN IT OFF!

PROOF OF GLOBAL WARMING!

Busselton Drive-in Run 2007
The annual Busselton run held over the March long weekend
is growing in stature and legendary status each year. The
Radiators club have again put on a great run this year. It is all well
organised. From the events, the catering and the balance between
the organised and the relaxation, it
was very good. The event central
location at the Peppermint Park
Caravan Park is in itself superb.
Lush green shaded surroundings,
clean facilities and excellent
cabins. The event has come a
long way over the last nine or so
years, from the days when entrants
would set up swags in the hosts
back yards. Imagine billeting the
numbers associated with 80
entrant vehicles that attended this
year.
Top to bottom: Frenchies
caravan towing ‘56, Nev’s 34 and
Garry Curnows 32, all at the show
and shine
Friday night was pizza night for the
early arrivals…. That was most of
the entrants. Congratulations to
the Radiators and their suppliers
for supplying about 75 delicious
pizzas at once and all piping hot.
It was an evening of catchups and
few drinks for many. Some
enjoyed an early night in bed
without the distractions of daily
living at home. My evening was
spent on the Ryan/ Anderson front
verandah, with Cusso Dougie,
Denise and the Curnows. After
being supplied with a free sample
bottle of Spanky Bannister scotch,

we had an interesting rendition of Nev’s trip in the USA, spoken in
Spanish, with Rosemary’s translation done using the remnants of
her schooldays French.
Saturday was Show and Shine day at Dunsborough. Approx
80 cars took a leisurely cruise south for the display. The display
was in a fenced area besides the pub. Gate takings from the
public are going to the
Leukaemia Research
Foundation, the charity to benefit
from the weekend run.
The town was buzzing with
holidayers and rodders. There
was a mini side show alley
amusement area, charity stalls
and of course the shops for
coffee and a snack and other
shops just to look at while killing some time. Some girls cannot
just look at shops! Mrs Curnow challenged the roadster’s trunk
holding capacity when packing for the trip home, with a couple of
new pairs of shoes and matching ensembles. Mrs Andie also got
into the shopping action. (Lars, she is out of control!)
A lot of rodders ended up at the hotel for a pleasant lunch
(surprise, surprise), before heading back to Busselton for some
relaxation before the Drive-in
later in the evening.
We all know that going to a
drive-in on a predetermined
date leaves one wide open to
an unknown movie selection.
This year’s selection was on par
with some of the previous years.
It simply becomes a place to
Top to bottom: AB’s ‘29 and Gary
gather, grab some take away
burgers and popcorn then
possibly leave early in the
second movie, after living in
hope during the “kid’s” movie

Busselton Drive-in Run 2007
Above photos: a sample of the
Dunsborough show and shine.
the what was to
follow would be
better. Historically,
the kid’s movies have
been better than the
main feature. This
year was the same in
my opinion. The main
movie was a dizzy
bitch chick flick! Sure
enough, the rumble
of starting V8s was
heard within 15
minutes of it
commencing. Only a
small contingent saw
the whole thing
through, including
“Andie”, Judith
Anderson’s husband.
The Curnows won
free tickets to the
drive in that night, so
Garry did what all
sensible rodders did
and left early without
hesitation, without
worrying about the
normal sacrificial
$20.00
The post movie
partying was
subdued this year in
the absence of Dave

Doggett and Big Al and the annual lamb chop burning
exhibition.
Sunday morning came around with Nu Breed doing the honours
and cooking up a fine breakfast, again organised by the
Radiators. Bacon, egg and
snags, cereal juice and hot
drinks. It was perfect just
like previous years. No
washing or cleaning up
afterwards.
After breakfast was the
rod run, done in a time trial
format over three stages.
Every car received a sheet
of instructions and left at
one minute intervals. The
instructions included some
questions and a map to the
destination for that stage.
There were three different
routes that sent the rods to
different locations at the end
of each stage, with everyone
ending up at the same final
destination for lunch at The
Colonial Brewery near
Margaret River.
Denise and I were
lucky() enough to bum a
lift with BL1 and BL2 in the
Bornlosermobile Galaxy. An
eye opening experience for
Denise to be in such
amazing company. (She last
saw BL1 chatting-up a
mermaid statue at Mindarrie
Keys tavern). Undoubtedly
From top to bottom: Charlie
Ferraloro’s bucket, Joe Triglia’s
39 coupe sans running boards
and Archies show stopper 32
tudor.

T-B: Tassie Steve Clarke
goes everywhere, neat old
school 32, Craig Hiddens
Rambler powerd C-cab,
Keith Wilson’s 40 coupe.
Busselton Drive-in Run 2007
it must have been her contribution to the
team that rocketed them into equal third
result for the event. Second last was the
previous best result for any event over
the last 10 years.
One question was: Name eight ABBA
songs!!!. We could think of four. We
looked at Allan’s tape collection but alas
no ABBA stuff for further clues.
Our first stage stop was at the Flower
Emporium. A shed full of clever art and
craft and plenty of flowers. I still don’t
know if the flowers were real or not after
being sucked in to smell the plastic
roses. Only the lack of scent aroused
my suspicions. I didn’t go back to check
the other species for plastic imposters.
Needless to say, Andie’s wife parted
with a few bucks here without buying
Neville the neat model airplane that
many of us thought was the best buy
there.
Our next stop was the Lavender
Farm. The immaculate gardens
displayed many different types of
lavender plants. We took advantage of
the coffee shop while
BL1 took advantage of the location to
buy half a dozen lavender pot plants for
a job he had lined up in the coming
week. He accidentally dropped the
carton of pots outside the coffee shop
on the verandah. Bit by bit he was
displaying his champion BL qualities to
the uninitiated like Denise. She thought

that MS and I were rude to him. She
hasn’t been around rodding very long,
is my only explanation for her silly
notion. There was a smelly
everything-lavender shop as well. Not
my scene. Bl1 completed his act at
this location by driving off and leaving
his camera there.
Fortunately, Archie took care of it for
him.
The last stop at the
brewery for lunch.
The location
provided plenty of
outdoor seating for
the masses and a
great lawned area to
park all of the cars
on.
Most of us took our
own lunch, although
meals were
available there. The
Top to Bottom: Bl1 and BL2 ponder the lost camera and what beer
to taste next. Facing this way , Vince and Jan Berriman, The
Frenches and Denise. Next, Facing this way, Rosemary Curnow,
Nev& Judy Anderson and Garry Curnow.
Bottom: A view of the rods at the Colonial Brewery for lunch.

Busselton Drive-in Run 2007
girls could spend more on shopping that way.
The other locations visited on the other
routes were a coffee specialty spot and an
olive farm. It was a great event and again
congratulations to the organizers.
Neville and Judith Anderson won the time
trial that was based on correct times and
most questions answered. . WCSRC,
1 st and equal 3 rd . Well done.
After lunch, enough time was allocated
for people to cruise back to Busselton at
their own leisure and to include any
tourist activities if desired. The next
event was the Hot Wheels racing. This
event now attracts big boys and cheats
from all over WA. The kids have to bully
their way in to get a shot. This year AB
T-B: Curnow perfecting a snagger. Lars the consummate
professional totally out of his depth. The cooking team: Gary K,
Clive, MS,Lars,Jan,Radiator ,Curnow, Brian, Allan, Baldy in hat

fronted with a stock looking delivery van loaded with several
kilograms of lead ballast. Alas it failed due to insufficient
cheating in the wheels and bearings development. The cheers
and laughter from the racing gradually drew rodders from near
and far, loaded with chairs and tables, in for some pre dinner
drinks and snacks in the out doors atmosphere.
As the time passed on WCSRC was summoned to cook
the evening meal. This comprised of meat patties and snags, to
go with the bread and salads prepared by other experts. Once
again, all organised by the Radiators. We manned the four or
five BBQs with spare hands to cut the snags, separate the
patties, tender drinks and coach
from the sidelines. The precision
was unbelievable. Watching BL1
cook with both hands while being
fed from a stubby, was proof of our
team work and application to the
task. Nu-Breed thought that they
had a promotional windfall by
suppling us with their “Nu Breed”
labelled aprons. People
would think that Nu
Breed was cooking
again.
Besides some aprons
being worn inside out,
they all got
exceptionally greasy
some how! After being
shown the dangerous
hot parts of a BBQ,
Baldy gave Lars a BBQ
Safety Certificate and
blunt safety spatular
Top: Dave Krause animates Allan and
Brian. Bottom: MS burning snags
while Lars plays with them.
which enabled Neville
to join in with the
cooking. A new

Busselton Drive-in Run 2007
experience for him, although he claims for Judy’s misconception
with the intent to never do it again, that it was really Nev’s
brother Mal in a Neville disguise.
The cooking team was, Baldy Ryan (coach), Dave Krause(capt),
Allan Rossi, Jan French, Frenchie, Curnow, Lars, Eric, MS, Gary
King and CliveTitchner (the new guy with the 32 coupe). What a
The big challenge! Packing the
roadsters for home. Top: Gary and
Helen fine tunimg the trunk space.
Bottom :Looking down our leafy
street, Gary tries to squeeze in
Rosemary’s two new pairs of shoes.
Culinary combo! After
the eating, this is the
night when tall tales are
spun, only to be
interrupted for a short
while by the official
presentations and
impromptu charity raising
auction.
The patrons were also
entertained by three of
the wilder female set that
removed their bras (tops
left on) and cruised in the
back of Phil Pavicic’s 34
truck. I wonder the point
of that exercise. They
did however hang their
under garments on the
back of the truck and
mirrors. They were
nicked and hung on full
display during the
presentations. They were
later auctioned raising
about another 50 bucks
for charity. The girls were
given their bras back by
the successful bidders.

Several other donated items were raffled by Barry Batten and
his team of jumpy Nu-Breed spotters, raising a couple more
hundred bucks for charity. It was a funny event.
The smelly old port wino also made an appearance but
disappeared smartly when the presentations began thus saving
embarrassment to the newer rodders who hadn’t seen him
before. He had some beautiful port this year, and lollies for all
the women.
The night calmed down with the 10.00pm noise curfew in
consideration of other non-rodding patrons of the park. All
except for a mixed bag of dudes, predominantly the new boys
and gals on the block, the Cranksters, that kept a noisy rat bag
enclave running in the back corner of the park for a while longer.
In all , a great weekend. Great weather, great events, shit
movies, spy vs spy inter-club rivalry, great people, friendship and
cars.
The growing presence of the Cranksters, now that they are
mature enough to have cars, not just push bikes, has added
another lively aspect to rodding in WA. They were very present
on the weekend. Especially some of the girls. Good on them.
The solid combination of the Radiators’ members all working
behind Tony Brittain and Glen Armstrong and his wife was
excellent.Thanks Radiators
Now check out the photos and kick yourself if you weren’t there.
SummerSun Sunday at Rockingham
On the closing Sunday of Summersun, at the finale in Rockingham, I
think there was a dance contest on.
Some streets were blocked and stalls were along the beach parkland.
The blocked streets were available for rods and retros to park along
creating an impromptu show and shine for pedestrians.
Gibby didn’t leave much info with these photos so I don’t think I should
try to make up this story any further. My professional standards must
somehow remain intact.. Check out the pictures instead. Editor.
Nostalgia Drags
The Nostalgia drags at Quit Motorplex Dragway were another
success. After some early morning showers, the day
surrendered perfect conditions for drag racing.
Late withdrawals from Gibby due to lack of time to prep
the big Pontiac with new carburetion, and of Garry Curnow
because of a dodgy push rod left, it to Nev Anderson in his 34
coupe and Gary King in his A model roadster to represent the
club in competition.
At the time of writing, no times were received from Gary
however I can report that he did break out of his time bracket
and thus bowed out of competition early. Lars posted consistent
11.8s during trials but left the competition early by running
quicker at 11.6 seconds in the first round..
The following pictures tell as much as I have been told
from here on. So have a sticky beak.
I can report that while I was at a nephew’s 21st (doing “the
right thing”), my daughter Wizzie (nephew’s cousin) was with
my hot rod mates at the drags having a ball and cruising in AB’s
roadster. How in hell that come about Extreme E.
Dom squeezed in one run before
leaving to attend another function

TECHNOLOGY NEWS. "Apple Computer announced today
that it has developed a computer chip that can store and play
music in women's breast implants. The iBreast will cost $499 or
$599 depending on size. This is considered to be a major
breakthrough because women are always complaining about men
staring at their breasts and not listening to them."
Competition News.
Lake Gairdner Speed Week
The team for the Club’s assault on Lake Gairdner in
2008, will have its first meeting soon. If you are interested
in the project contact Lars or Extreme E now so we know
who to call.
The meeting will formulate the type of vehicle and class
to race in and document what we have for the project and
what we need, for both the race car and the backup logistics.
The team will need a minimum of 6 to go to the lake, but
all members are invited to work on , or donate to the project.
There is only 11 months to go!
Nostalgia Drags.
Gary King and Nev Anderson represented WCSRC at
the drags. Unfortunately they both bowed out early by
breaking out of their time brackets. Nev’s best time of the
day was 11.6 No times have been received for Gary at the
time of printing. Judy may be in for a some more Jewellery
as Nev needed to replace a damaged diff after the drags!
Busselton Time Trial.
The time trial covering about 100 kms over three
stages, held at the Busselton run, was won by Nev and
Judy Anderson in their 34 coupe.
Equal third place was won by Allan Rossi in his Galaxy,
with MS, Extreme E and Denise as navigators.
A wonderful turn around in form for this team!
Well done West Coast!
