WINGER: WHY MEN ANTHROPOLOGY IN THE NICENE CREED 11
THE MEANING AND SIGNIFICANCE OF a;nqrwpoj
The two instances of translation that concern this study (“for us men” and
“was made man”) cannot be considered in isolation from one another. They
are vital elements within a unit of the Second Article that confesses the
incarnation of Christ. We must investigate the content of this unit as a whole.
The following table sets out the original text and the most significant
In passing we note one translation issue in this section that has been taken
up by some modern versions, concerning the respective roles of the Holy
Spirit and Mary in Christ’s conception. The original Greek text of the Nicene
Creed does not distinguish their roles, simply confessing that Christ was
incarnate “of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary”. The Latin liturgical text
introduces a slight differentiation: “by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary”.
Our traditional English text follows the Latin, and there is no significant
