Steve Wakulsky, PGA
College/University: Eastern Michigan University BA ‘85
Year Turned Pro: 1987
Facility and Job Title: Owosso Country Club, Private, Head Golf
Professional
What was your motivation to become a PGA Professional
To gain more knowledge about the golf business, to become a more
well rounded Golf Professional.
What is your specialty in the golf business
Going from strictly teaching for most of my career to running the golf
operations at Owosso CC has been very enjoyable and rewarding.
Please list any accomplishments (Awards, Certifications, and
Tournaments): Golf Digest top teachers in state (Florida), ranked
17 th in 2006.
What was your greatest moment in golf
Teaching tour players like Nick Faldo, Nick Price and David Frost at
tournaments in Asia and Australia was enjoyable. Personally it would
be playing well in tournaments as a junior helped me receive a golf
scholarship to college and achieve my goals in golf.
What or who has had the greatest impact on your career
I would say that David Leadbetter has had the greatest impact on my
career. Having taken lessons from him and then working for him for
27 years he became a great mentor and friend. He has a great sense
of humor and unbelievable instincts when it comes to teaching.
Besides golf, what else do you enjoy
Being with my family. Spending time with my wife and children.
If you could play any golf course in the world, which one would
it be and who would complete your foursome
I have always enjoyed the University of Michigan golf course in Ann
Arbor. It is an old Mackenzie design. But to play any course in the
world that I have not played it would be Royal Melbourne in Australia.
I had a chance to play it many years ago and could not find the time.
I would enjoy playing it with some good friends, no celebrities or
famous golfers in particular.
If you could give lessons to anyone in the world who would it
be and what advice would you give
Not sure, maybe Charles Barkley because of his well-documented
swing problems. I would work on things to help his swing become
more fluid and more consistent.
What is your favorite golf instruction tip
Gripping the club properly in the left hand is probably the most
important single fundamental to master. It gives your swing power
and control and allows you to create leverage with the clubhead during
the swing.
