The Golden West College Foundation
The Golden West College Foundation was organized in 1985 to solicit and manage gifts to benefit the college and
its students. The Foundation is dedicated to supporting the College’s mission of providing comprehensive academic
opportunities to the community for lifelong learning.
A board of directors, who provides the leadership and direction for the organization’s operation, manages the
Foundation. The Foundation has grown steadily since 1985 with assets over $4,600,000. This has been accomplished
through donations of cash, bequests and grants from individuals and businesses. The Foundation has provided
$3,354,500 in scholarships to Golden West College students. In addition to cash assets, the Foundation annually
receives donated equipment and supplies that represent thousands of dollars in non-monetary gifts.
The primary focus of the Foundation Board of Directors is to work towards building support for college-wide
needs. To nurture groups who have special interests in supporting Golden West College, the Foundation provides
staff support and direction to two auxiliaries. Each auxiliary is managed by its own board and officers, requiring
membership dues for operational expenses.

The Golden West Foundation again participated in the Scholarship and Awards Ceremony
held in May by awarding scholarships to over 200 students. Since 1986, the Foundation has
awarded over $3,000,000 to deserving students. This has been extremely gratifying to the
Foundation as the awarding of scholarships is a direct contributor to our primary goal of
student success at Golden West College.
On Saturday March 20, 2009, the Foundation held its 12th annual major successful fundraiser,
the “Golden West College Gala.” We are extremely happy to have raised a record $205,006,
especially during some of the worst economic conditions in the last 75 years. This performance
speaks volumes to the dedication and commitment of our Board Members and supporters. The proceeds will benefit Golden West
College students and college programs. We particularly want to thank Elmore Toyota, Irvine Health Foundation, Toyota Motor Sales,
U.S.A., Inc., and Union Bank of California as major sponsors and all the other underwriters who gave so generously to this event. We
would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Gala Committee and its chair, Patricia Meredith, as well as the community at large for
continuing to support this very important event for the college. We look forward to continued success at our 13th Gala scheduled for
March 13, 2010.
Our 18th Annual Courtyard of Honor Ceremony was celebrated last October. Four GWC alumni were honored as Alumni Pillar of
Achievement recipients. Since the inception of this awards program in 1991, 83 alumni have been honored. We had five Pillars of
Support (+$25,000) including The Axel Family Pillar, The William and Joanne Bumm Family Pillar, The Judy Elmore Pillar, the Dawn
McKahan Pillar, and The Susan and Robert Polentz Pillar. The donor wall was increased by 86 donor names, with five in the Golden
Society ($10,000+) category.
As we look to 2010, we want to express our collective gratitude for the continued participation and leadership of the Foundation
Board members whose commitment and participation is critical to the overall success of the Foundation’s mission. We would also
like to extend our sincere appreciation to the community at large that has continued to support the Foundation and the college with
its generosity and support. Without this dedication, our work would not be possible. The Foundation’s objectives for 2010 include
increasing the Board’s role in fostering student success, expanding Board membership, continuing a high level of participation from our
members, initiating a new fund raising activity and sponsoring another successful Gala while continuing to seek fresh ideas for new
fund raising opportunities and expansion of existing programs.
This year began with a tremendous challenge from an investment perspective. Our asset allocation methodology has rewarded us with
a significant improvement in our overall financial position and while we have not fully recovered the unrealized losses incurred in
the last quarter of 2009, substantial improvement has been achieved and we remain reasonably confident that a full recovery will be
achieved. HighMark Capital Management, our financial adviser, is doing a good job considering these challenging times.
In closing, I would like to personally thank the Foundation Board of Directors and those who have provided advice, counsel,
professional guidance, financial support and personal time to the Board during the past year. As I look to the conclusion of my tenure
as the Chairman of the Foundation Board, I would like to offer my personal thanks to all of those who have supported the Foundation
during the last several years. It is not often that I have had the unique opportunity to work with such a dedicated group for such a
worthy cause. I look forward to the upcoming year and my continued service on the Board, where we will work as a team towards the
goal of enhancing student success at Golden West College.

President, Wes Bryan
At last year’s graduation ceremony I was talking with a recent scholarship
recipient. Holding his diploma tightly in his hands and with tears in his eyes,
he explained that for him this day was a miracle. He was the first child in his
family to graduate from college, something nobody would have predicted.
He was transferring to a top tier four year university. Another surprise, since
when he started at Golden West, his self-expectations were modest and his
goals were unclear. In fact, he thought he would only be able to finish his
remedial courses before having to quit college altogether. College has a way
of changing people – when they find their passions and we are able to connect students like him with resources.
Financial Aid, scholarship supplements, and work study, as well as counseling, tutoring and caring instructors
combined to make a difference in this young man’s life. The even better news is that his story is not that unusual. It is
repeated over and over again as students walk across the stage at graduation.
This annual report of the Golden West College Foundation explains the vital role our donors have in making these
dreams come true. It illustrates how the combined efforts of individual donors, volunteers, business partners, and
other community agencies can join together to support the college in its mission of providing affordable quality
education and support services to students in need.
When the state economy takes a dip, enrollments at community colleges soar. Predictably, in a time of fiscal crisis
people realize that we are at the heart of workforce development, and that an educated populace has always been the
strength of our economy. Quite often, when the state can’t adequately address our financial needs, the private donor
steps up to the plate to help Golden West College provide students with scholarships and books, as well as classrooms
with needed equipment and supplies.
Living in an affluent area, we sometimes forget how important these efforts are in making a significant difference in
the lives of our students. We know that students who earn a vocational degree or certificate will see their wages jump
from $25,600 to $47,571 in just three years. We also know they are more likely to be involved in community service,
live healthier lives, and have greater job satisfaction.
I hope as you review this report you will consider involving yourself to a greater degree in the projects that our
campus community sponsors. Without your support, the college could not begin to offer the scholarships and
programs which provide our students with so many avenues to success.
I am proud to be associated with a Foundation Board that understands the importance of educational opportunities,
donates their time, and expends their energy to help students in need.

4th of July Salutes the
Centennial
One hundred and five years ago, the residents
of Huntington Beach held a 4th of July parade even before the city was incorporated!
Golden West College and the Boys and Girls Club of Huntington Valley participated
in the centennial celebration with their float entry. Riders on the float were IIdefonso
Flores- GWC Classified Employee of the Year, Lyvyane Tran-ASGWC Homecoming
Queen, David Lopez-ASGWC President, Clarisa Malhiot-ASGWC Homecoming
Queen. Also riding on the float from the Boys and Girls Club of Huntington Valley are
Outstanding Club members who help staff make a difference to kids at the club through
their commitment to volunteerism and willingness to help. On the float once again this
year, the Jon Kubus Band played great patriotic music to the delight of the enthusiastic
crowd of parade goers.
Driving the G-Dub was Wes Bryan, GWC President and riding shotgun was Shirley
Dettloff, Foundation President of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley.

honored because I was able to be on the
float that represented my school. I had a
wonderful time! Being in and at the parade
I was able to sing and dance and share

came to the event. Seeing waving flags and
our country’s colors – red, white, and blue
– I believe on that day, everyone was able
to connect and rejoice with one another. I
know we were all proud to be Americans!”

Program. Wishes were limited to

12th Annual Gala
Golden West College held its 12th annual Gala on March 20, 2009 honoring Huntington
Beach’s 100th birthday. Themed Dancing through the Decades, our gala festivities
included silent and live auctions, and an elegant dinner. Over 320 guests danced through
the decades to live music provided by Wayne Foster Entertainment. Guests celebrated
the city’s centennial birthday with a cake, candles and a birthday song.

The GWC Automotive Technology
program prepares students for rewarding
careers in maintaining, diagnosing
and repairing of modern vehicles and
light-duty trucks. State-of-the-art
electronic test equipment and specialized
hand tools are an integral part of this
successful program. Everything was
humming along nicely, until their

things got hot!
But Carleen Leatherman, auto
technology faculty member, knew
just what to do – put a Wish in to the
Foundation for a new one! Their wish
was granted and now everything is cool
and the program is cruising along.
The computer-controlled systems in the modern automobiles rely on technicians
with a high level of proficiency in the use of electronic test equipment and specialized
hand tools. Golden West College is certified by the National Institute for Automotive
Service Excellence (ASE) thought evaluation by the National Automotive Technicians
Education Foundation (NATEF). As a NATEF-certified training center, the Automotive
Technology program is fully qualified and prepared in training competent technicians
for today’s demanding automotive service industry.

The Golden West College Patrons
Organized in April 1973, the Golden West College Patrons membership is composed of
alumni, community members and Golden West College staff and faculty. The Patrons
is a volunteer organization which raises monies for student scholarships through their
Chefs for Scholarships event held each fall. The members also volunteer hundreds of hours
each year in support of other events such as Commencement Ceremony, Scholarships and
Awards Ceremony, and Gala.
Chefs For Scholarships
The Patrons held their 4th annual Chefs for Scholarships event on September 20, 2009
in the Student Center and Patio. Approximately 300 people attended this family-oriented
event featuring musical entertainment, a bounce house for the kids, clowns, and the HB Fire
Department. Guests sampled delicious food and beverages from local restaurants, wineries
and breweries. The Patrons allocate $7,200 from the proceeds each year to support their 16
annual student scholarships. They have been funding scholarships on campus since 1973
and have donated over $100,000 to help students achieve their academic goals.

to Ryan Chung, an alumnus of Golden West
College and campus volunteer.
Ryan is starting his Masters Program at the
University of California, Irvine, with a goal
of attending medical school.

Quilt Auxiliary
“Those who sleep under a quilt,
sleep under a blanket of love”

The Hens & Chickens Quilt Fellowship of
Golden West College, an auxiliary of the
Foundation, began in 1989 when a group of
quilters did not want to disband after having
taken a quilting class at Golden West College.
Their name, Hens & Chickens, was taken from
the name of a quilt block. Originally a group
of 5, they have been 25 members strong and
range in age from 7 years old to 75.
Each year, they make an opportunity quilt and
donate the funds to GWC scholarships as well as contributions to the campus for such projects
as theater renovations, ballet bars for the dance department, new library books, a Fine Arts
Gallery security system, Science Museum supplies and recently a brick entryway for the GWC
California Native Plant Garden.
This year’s quilt was the “Secret Quilt Code” and the Underground Railroad Quilt. According
to the early 1900’s oral testimony of an elderly black quilt vendor from South Carolina,
the late Ozella McDaniel Williams, a “secret quilt code” was in place during the era of the
Underground Railroad. This code guided slaves by providing specific directives hidden in
quilt block patterns. Each quilt block was meant to be a memory device and conveyed a
certain course of action. The 2009 opportunity quilt is made of 1860’s reproduction fabric and
contains the blocks mentioned in the secret quilt code.

Gift Annuities
A Charitable Gift Annuity is an extraordinary way to make an irrevocable

Annual Fund
Cash contributions to the Foundation’s annual fund are a critical source of private
support for the college. Annual fund donations finance the scholarship program
and other endeavors that strengthen the college.
Memorial Gifts
Gifts in memory of loved ones and deceased friends — or gifts which honor
living individuals — are gratefully accepted by the Foundation.
Such contributions are often used to reflect the interests or talents of the person
being honored. The Foundation is pleased to help potential donors explore
appropriate uses for the memorial gifts.

Life Insurance Policies
The Golden West College Foundation may be named a beneficiary. Donation of
a life insurance policy to the Foundation entitles the donor to a tax deduction for
the cash surrender value.
Gifts-In-Kind (Non-Cash Donations)
Donations of personal property, including vehicles, equipment and supplies,
are gratefully accepted by the Golden West College Foundation. Please inquire
with the Foundation Office about specific items being considered as gifts to the
college.
Bequests
A bequest designates a gift to the college in the donor’s will. Many alumni
and friends have made a provision in their wills for the Golden West College

Measure C Bond Update
The campus is nearing completion of the projects scheduled from
the Measure C Bond Funds. The Learning Resource Center is
scheduled to be completed in Summer 2010 and the goal is to
have the programs in their new location for start of school in Fall
2010. This facility will be a wonderful addition to the Golden
West Campus and we look forward to sharing it with the community
that allowed us to build it.
The 55,000 square ft. building will accommodate:

Returning Combat Veterans Scholarship
Receives $4500 Donation
On Veteran’s Day, Dr. Lois Miller, Vice President of Instruction presented a $4,500 donation
to Ron Lowenberg, Dean of GWC Criminal Justice, for the Returning Combat Veterans
Scholarship Program.
“My husband Mike and I wanted to help. Knowing the sacrifices our veterans make, and
to honor the many veterans in both of our families, we wanted to donate enough money
to completely sponsor a returning combat veteran in the next GWC Criminal Justice Basic
Academy course.”
If a combat veteran chooses to pursue a career in law enforcement, he or she can apply
for a completely funded scholarship, once they return to civilian status. This scholarship
provides financial support for equipment, uniforms and academy related costs. The cost to
attend the GWC Police Academy is $4,368.
This scholarship program was established in 2007 and has received donations from the
Golden West College Foundation, SureFire Corporation, Newport Beach Exchange Club,
the City of Huntington Beach, TRC Range Services, American Legion Huntington Beach
Post 133, Huntington Beach Kiwanis, the Orange County Sheriff ’s Association, and Leaders
from the City of Huntington Beach.

Pillars of Support
The first Pillars of Support were inducted at the
inaugural Courtyard of Honor Ceremony in 1995.
Since that time, GWC has honored 51 Pillars

The Alumni Pillar of Achievement program
was initiated by the 25th Anniversary
Committee in 1991. As a part of this
celebration, the first honorees were installed
on September 12, 1991. This past October
the Foundation inducted four new recipients,
bringing the total number of inductees to 83.

units at Golden West College ten years prior

Since 1986, the Golden West College Foundation has
processed over $3,354,500 for student scholarships.
Each scholarship application involves a process of
review by a scholarship committee who selects the
recipients based upon individual scholarship criteria.
At the Scholarships and Awards Ceremony held in
May, over 200 scholarships were awarded to GWC
students. The Scholarships & Awards Ceremony
recognizes both the scholarship recipients and the
donors who support them. The ceremony is held
annually in the beautiful GWC Amphitheater.
