Course Overview:
In Pre Calculus, students continue to build on the K-8, Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry foundations as they
expand their understanding through other mathematical experiences. Students use symbolic reasoning and
analytical methods to represent mathematical situations, to express generalizations, and to study mathematical
concepts and the relationships among them. Students use functions, equations, and limits as useful tools for
expressing generalizations and as means for analyzing and understanding a broad variety of mathematical
relationships. Students also use functions as well as symbolic reasoning to represent and connect ideas in
geometry, probability, statistics, trigonometry, and calculus and to model physical situations. Students use a
variety of representations (concrete, pictorial, numerical, symbolic, graphical, and verbal), tools, and technology
(including, but not limited to, calculators with graphing capabilities, data collection devices, and computers) to
model functions and equations and solve real-life problems.
Consequences if a student chooses to break the rules:
The tardy, dress code, and cell phone policies are outlined in the student handbook.
Other disruptive actions will result in the following:
1) First violation: warning, discussion after class, and reducing 5 points from “Attendance, Be Prepared, Be
respectful & Be cooperative” grade.
2) Second violation: contact parent, and reducing 10 points from “Attendance, Be Prepared, Be respectful &
Be cooperative” grade.
3) Third violation: parent conference, and reducing 15 points from “Attendance, Be Prepared, Be respectful &
Be cooperative” grade.
4) Office Referral
***Order may change due to type of offense
Grading Policy:
Student grades will be calculated based on the following weighted scale:
Attendance, Be Prepared, Be respectful & Be cooperative 5%
Class Participation & Daily Work 15%
Homework 15%
Quizzes 25%
Tests 40%
Total 100%
The course will adhere to the Austin ISD grading scale:
90-100 A Excellent
80-89 B Good
70-79 C Average
Below F Failing
Homework Policy:
Late homework will be accepted but will get at most 70 out of 100. Homework is most effective for
student learning if it is completed when assigned.
Quizzes
To better align your math grade with your mastery of the TEKS, we will have quizzes each week.
Tests & Benchmark Exams:
Tests will be given on each unit of study. We will review for each test at least one day in advance. The
tests will include questions in a variety of formats, including multiple choice, free response, essay, and analysis.
There will be two benchmark exams as mandated by AISD. These will be cumulative in nature and will
help prepare your child for the TAKS Test.
