Community Preservation Public Meeting
December 2nd
The Nahant Community Preservation Committee is holding a public meeting
on Thursday, December 2nd, 2010, at 7:30 p.m., at Town Hall. All are welcome
to attend to learn more about Community Preservation, to share ideas, voice
concerns, or just to be involved.
Community Preservation has supported many worthy projects in Nahant.
Community Preservation funding has assisted a number of historic preservation
projects such as the Town Wharf building, Life-Saving Station, Town Hall,
Ellingwood Chapel and Dory Club.
In the open space and recreational category, funding has supported the Community
Garden, dune grass planting at Short Beach, Heritage Trail, steps for 40 Steps Beach, the
Town Wharf and others. In the affordable housing category, assistance to the Military
Housing studies has been joined with grants to the Housing Authority.
This is the fifth year of Community Preservation activity. Just a reminder: funds
collected under the Community Preservation Act can only be spent for four community
preservation areas: open space, historic preservation, affordable housing and certain
specific recreational uses. At least 10% of the funds received, in any fiscal year, must be
spent, or set aside, for each of the first three of those areas (open space, historic preservation,
affordable housing). The remaining 70% of each year’s funds can be spent in any of
the four areas, as determined by the needs of the community.
Funding may include acquisitions of ownership interests in real estate, acquisitions
of easements and rights-of-way, acquisitions of land use restrictions (affordable housing,
historic preservation and conservation), leases, studies (architectural, engineering,
environmental, legal and other technical assistance).
Funds also may be appropriated for the creation, or support of affordable housing,
or for preservation, or restoration purposes, however, CPA funds cannot be spent on
maintenance (i.e. non-capital expenditures for ongoing upkeep of buildings, or landscapes).
Up to 5% of annual Community Preservation revenues can be spent on administrative
and operating expenses of the Community Preservation Committee.
The Community Preservation Committee welcomes your participation. Refreshments
will be served.
Last Call for SHINE
The SHINE volunteer representative will be at the Senior Center, on Tuesday,
Dec. 21st. She will be here to advise any senior who is making decisions
about their medical, or prescription drug coverage, for the coming year. These
decisions must be made before December 31st, in order to make any changes to
policies. Some may not know that there have been some changes made to Medicare
for the year 2011, that need to be considered. Many seniors have been
helped during November and December 21st, is the last chance to schedule an
appointment with the SHINE Representative.
However, should this date not be convenient, we can set up an appointment
on another day. Please consider this program, as it could help provide the best
coverage for you, as well as possibly reduce your medical and drug costs.
The SHINE program is offered through the Office Of Elder Affairs and
Medicare, recommended to provide accurate and timely information, concerning
health and prescription plans and support to insure these matters are handled
correctly. These appointments are an opportunity to receive assistance in making
decisions concerning these health and prescription issues that must be made as
the end of the year approaches.
For an appointment, please call 781-581-7557, or e-mail ddesmond
The Yukelin—A Mystery
Musical Instrument
The Silent Auction at the Christmas Fair
of the Nahant Village Church, to be held on
Saturday, December 4th, will feature, among
many other wonderful items, a YUKELIN
given by an unidentified donor.
We are very curious about this instrument,
particularly since we have been unable
to turn up anything on the internet, or music
libraries, relative to its origin, or how it is to
be played. Is it perhaps a cross between a
ukelele and a violin
We’d love to talk to the person who so
kindly made this donation, or to anyone who
can shed light on this instrument.
Happy Holidays!
Now Is The Time For Serious Buyers
As the year winds down, many homeowners fear that now could
be a bad time to sell their home. While it’s true that the holidays can
deter some folks from house hunting and making a major purchase—
don’t give up.
Mortgages are cheap. At 4.125 percent for a 30-year fixed-rate
mortgage, costs to own are down by 20 percent, from two years ago.
If your house is on the market, step up the action plan to draw attention to it. Don’t
let the holiday blues make you feel like there’s no hope. Homes are indeed sold and
bought this time of year. But, the ones that get snatched up are the ones that are enticing
to buyers.
Because this is a very busy time of year with personal travel and holiday celebrations,
many real estate experts note that if you have buyers dropping by your open house,
or making an appointment to view your home, there’s a good chance they’re serious
buyers. There are some things you can do to make your home more “showable”. We
often say in the real estate industry, “the way you live in a home, is not the way you stage
a home.”
So, while this time of year often brings out all the holiday decor, there is such a
thing as too much holiday cheer. No, I’m not the Grinch. It’s just that not all buyers
celebrate the same holidays.
A good rule of thumb is to keep decor simple and subtle. If you celebrate Christmas,
go ahead and put a tree up, but don’t put one up in every room. Remember that buyers
will be looking at your home and imagining their own holiday celebrations there. So, be
sure to leave them room to envision their lives in the home.
This goes for the outside, too. Holiday lights can be placed outside very tastefully,
but ditch the huge inflatable characters that make it look like your yard is an amusement
park. Instead, opt for a nice holiday wreath and some subtle seasonal decor. Keep in
mind that curb appeal is what gets buyers in the door. If your home isn’t appealing from
the outside, buyers won’t bother to stop for a look inside.
Stash the gifts. If you usually put them under the tree, or around the house, save
them for the day of your celebration. There are two reasons: presents take up precious
floor space and they are a distraction. It’s a good idea to keep as many personal belongings
as possible in a safe, private place.
Especially in cold weather areas, cinnamon pine cones, or some other mild potpourris
can be a pleasant welcome. But don’t go overboard with a different fragrance in every
room.
Another nice touch is to spruce up the mantle. However, if you usually hang stockings
with your family’s names on them, you might consider using less personal ones
while showing your home. It’s for the same reason stagers will put away your personal
photos—to create a space in which buyers can imagine their photos and belongings.
Listing your home for sale during the holidays doesn’t have to make you blue; in
fact it can truly brighten your spirits by putting some green in your bank account. Just be
sure to focus on making your home a buyer’s dream, this holiday season.
Update From The Nahant
Woman’s Club
We had a very successful Veterans Day Chowder Luncheon meeting. We were
delighted to have Nancy Cella to sing to us and Lisa LaFera to speak to us.
Marilyn Wellington introduced Lisa and we all feel blessed to have these wonderful
and inspiring women, as part of our rich community.
We were able to collect a enormous amount of new toiletries and wish-list items, for
the seven women veterans, currently at home, in the Chelsea Soldiers home. Collecting
for these women veterans will be an ongoing project, as the need is year-round.
We also collected $130, to be used by the Chelsea Soldiers home. So thank you one
and all - once again, you are an inspiration and the ripples of joy you cause are felt far
and wide.
Please remember to come to the Holiday Party, which is a joint venture between
The
Nahant Garden Club and The Women’s Club. It will be held in the Knights of
Columbus, 6:00 to 8:30 p.m., on December 9th. We will be collecting hats, mittens and
scarves for children and adults.
Also, please save the date of January 8th. At the Nahant Village Church, 10:00 to
noon. We are honored to have Doris Soares from Annette’s Climb and Candance
Waldron from HAWC (Healing Abuse Working For Change), coming to speak to
us. Domestic violence awareness and prevention is a main focus of the Federation of
Woman’s Clubs and of your Nahant Club.
— Submitted by Wendy Payne
Nahant Garden Club News
The Nahant Garden Club had a wonderful November
meeting with featured speaker, Peter Alden, who educated
us in a humorous way, about birds. Members donated
delicious dishes to share, at the Harvest Potluck Supper.
Later in the month, we had workshops at the Town Hall,
making wreaths, boxwood trees and centerpieces, that
were sold at the Holiday Craft Fair, over Thanksgiving
weekend. The NGC is so grateful to the Town for giving
us space for our workshops.
We will be having another workshop with Marie
Ford, on Thursday, December 2nd, at the Town Hall, from
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., to make centerpieces for the
“Bring and Sing Christmas Celebration,” to be held at the
Knights of Columbus Hall, on Thursday, December 9th, at
6:00 p.m.
This year’s holiday party, held jointly with the
Women’s Club, will feature the North Shore Songsters
and a String Quartet. Refreshments will be served.
The centerpieces made by the NGC will be for sale.
Once again, we will be collecting an unwrapped gift from
the members for Toys for Tots, infants to teens. Donations
also can be made to the Daily Item Santa Fund.
Coordinated Program Review
Superintendent Philip Devaux, of the Nahant School
District, has been informed by the Commissioner of
Elementary and Secondary Education, of an upcoming
Coordinated Program Review. The visitation will occur
during the week of December 13th, 2010. Such visits are
routinely conducted by the Department, to satisfy federal
and state requirements for periodic review of specific
education programs and services, throughout the Commonwealth.
The Coordinated Program Review will address the
program areas of Special Education, Civil Rights and
English Learner Education. The process will include a
review of written documentation, plus interviews with
district staff and parents.
After the onsite visit, the Department will prepare a
written report using a scale of ratings from “Commendable”
to “Not Implemented.” The district will develop a
Corrective Action Plan to bring into compliance any areas
found to be partially implemented, or not implemented.
Both the Department’s report and the corrective
action plan are public information and available on request,
or on the Department website, at http://
www.doe.mass.edu/pqa/review/cpr/reports/.
Any member of the public may request to be interviewed
by telephone by a member of the Department’s
visiting team. Those wishing to be interviewed should call
the superintendent’s office at 781-581-1600, or the Department
at 781-338-3726. A member of the visiting team
will contact each person desiring an interview within two
weeks of completion of the onsite visit.
If an individual is not comfortable communicating in
English, or requires some other accommodation, the
Department will make arrangements to communicate
appropriately with the individual.
Nahant Education Foundation Funds $5,000 in Grants
The Nahant Education Foundation is pleased to announce the funding of five, fall,
teacher grants for the Johnson Elementary School, totaling over $5,000. Two of these
grants include much needed Science Kits with manipulatives, for the 3rd and 4th graders.
These hands on science kits will supplement the current Earth, Life Science and Engineering
components of the curriculum currently taught.
The third grant, funds the renewal of the school’s license for the popular Study
Island computer program, instigated last year, to help prepare students for state assessment
testing (MCAS). This is a website that all children in grades 2nd-6th, can use from
home, to support and supplement learning in school.
A fourth grant will fund Teacher Resource Kits, to prepare teacher’s for professional
development on the school’s newly piloted math program called, “Everyday Math”.
The fifth grant will fund an interactive computer software program called “Board
Maker Studio” for preschool through 6th grade, to assist in instruction for children with
special needs.
The dramatic, and historically high 2010 MCAS scores, demonstrate the importance
of all efforts, made by the Johnson School teachers, the administration, the students, as
well as NEF and PTO’s financial support. Over the past two years, the Nahant Education
Foundation has dedicated itself to raising funds in support of our public elementary
school. NEF has raised over $75,000, thanks to so many in Nahant that have so generously
contributed, with $63,000 already given to the school, in support of technology and
teachers grants.
Just this past June, the School Committee approved a 5-year Strategic Plan for the
Johnson School, which has already begun. NEF will support this initiative by continuing
to fund innovative programs in our school, that enhance children’s learning and continue
to increase our school’s MCAS scores, until 100% of our students are scoring Proficient,
or Advanced.
Our success as a community, with a top-rated, strong, vibrant school system, depends
on all of us...parents, teachers, the administration and the community, as a whole.
The Nahant Education Foundation has accomplished a lot in two short years, but there’s
so much more to do! As the French writer, Simone De Beauvoir, once said, “One is not
born a genius, one becomes a genius.”
If interested in learning more about NEF, or you would like to make an end of the
year, tax-deductible (NEF is a 501(c)(3), donation to the Foundation, please visit our
News From the Johnson School
By Diane D. Mulcahy, Principal
The highlight of the month was the annual Veterans’ Day Assembly and luncheon,
held on Wednesday, November 10th. The students had practiced their choral selections,
poems and readings, under the directions of Mrs. Dianne Dunion, Mrs. Meredith Tibbo,
Mr. David Brady and Mrs. Cheri Spencer. Mr. DalPozzal and the North Shore Songsters
added a wonderful dimension to the proceedings. The Assembly went off without a hitch
and the Johnson School students certainly performed very well. This year, in addition to
the fifth and sixth grade chorus, the third and fourth graders performed a selection of
patriotic songs for the occasion. We are very appreciative of the parents who decorated
the cafeteria and provided the delicious lunch for our invited guests. Thank you to the
Warren family who donated a wreath, which was presented to the Nahant Veterans and
displayed at the Veterans’ Memorial in Town. Students observed Veterans’ Day with an
all school assembly, on Tuesday, November 9th.
The Johnson School gratefully accepted grants from the Nahant Education Foundation.
The Foundation has supported over $27,000 in educational grants. This fall, the
Foundation voted to renew Study Island, support individual teacher grants for science
projects and purchase Board Maker, for the school. We are grateful to the NEF for their
continued support.
Student Council elections were held recently, at the Johnson School, resulting in
Harrison Hosker, as President and for Vice President, Caroline Munnelly, Secretary,
Maggie DiGande and Treasurer, David Peterson. The Student Council got right to work
and launched its Thanksgiving Food Drive, during November. The students brought in
canned goods, which were donated to My Brother’s Table. Mr. David Brady is the
Student Council Advisor for this year.
Marks closed for the first trimester on Friday, November 19th. Report Cards are
being issued to students on December 3rd. Parent Conferences will be held on December
7th and 8th. Each teacher has selected one evening, that will be available, for parent
conferences.
We are all looking forward to the Holiday Concert, which will be held on Tuesday
evening, December 21st, at 7:00 p.m. The students have been practicing and are really
well-prepared for the concert, which is a highlight of the winter season.
Ms. Donna Page, and a group of enthusiastic fifth- and sixth-graders, are participating
this year, in the Continental Math League. The Continental Math League provides
schools with math practice, which supplements the school curriculum. Schools have
found benefits in reading comprehension and problem-solving skills. This year’s participants
are Chris Moleti, Harrison Hosker, Ben Hunt, Maisie Vasquez and Ryan Dignan.
Any fifth-, or sixth-grader is welcomed to participate.
Get in the Spirit
By Sallee Slagle, Director, Dance Dimensions
The holiday time is a time for celebration, joy, sharing, giving, faith and spirit.
Everyone may celebrate differently, but we all have some things in common.
Groups of all types gather as a community. Family and friends are gathered. Religious
and educational groups have special events. Choirs of students, boy scouts and more, go
out to spread some cheer among those shut-in, or less fortunate. This is one of my favorite
times, as there seems to be more connection with people, even strangers greet and
wish you well. At least, in my mind, it seems that people are more willing to meet you
with a warm greeting.
You may say I am a dreamer Well, some of you may be finding it harder to “get
into the spirit.” Greet a stranger
The news reminds us everyday that the environment is “dangerous” and we
shouldn’t trust strangers. The effects of the economy, or our own personal troubles, can
feel like it is pulling us down. Life is a journey with twists and turns, as well as ups and
downs. A bit of “bah humbug,” gets us all at one time, or another. The question is how to
get out of that and into the spirit of the season
Attitude is a key factor in your outlook on daily life. If you’re feeling a bit depressed,
or down for whatever reason, a good thing to do is get moving! Go out and
walk! Go workout, or put on some fast music and get dancing! Exercise has been proven
to be key in raising mood. It has been proven to work as well as, and some studies
conclude even better than, antidepressants and the side effects are ALL positive! If you
change your attitude, you’ll see that your approach to the day, the tasks at hand, the
people in your life, will be more effusive and more effective for getting into the spirit of
the season.
Get things DONE! When projects and actions build up around you, they can seem
overwhelming and sometimes, when you need to get busy, you just can’t seem to get
even one thing done! Just take the easiest one on the list and get that done. Then another.
Eliminate distractions. Complete the things you start and don’t start new projects before
finishing others. I always have a lot to do and I feel better when things are getting finished
and crossed off my list! Keep at the big projects, a little at a time, and they too, will
get done. Just set a small amount of time aside regularly, for those backlogged cycles
you’ve been putting off and you will see them become manageable and done before you
realize.
Take some time for yourself. Yes, you! Plan your day to include some time to
recharge. Even 15 minutes of a pleasurable activity, or even a favorite project can make
your day seem better. Paint, read, decorate, have a cup of tea. Whatever it is, be sure to
include it. Take a longer time at least once a week, just for you. Also each night, try to
include time to review your day. Looking over what you have accomplished is rewarding
and helps motivate you for tomorrow’s tasks. Check things off the list and plan tomorrow
for best results.
Good food, exercise and good sleep can help you keep a good attitude. Stay on a
good schedule for your body. Don’t skip meals and eat healthy. Go to bed at a regular
time each day. Your body does best when you keep it all regular. Being sleep deprived
just makes staying focused even harder. And we all know, being tired can lead to being
grumpy and we don’t want that!
Okay, this is great, but what about the holidays Where is the spirit
Do some good. Whatever it may be. Help another, volunteer, give back. It really
feels good. You may become inspired, grateful and humbled by others in need. And you
are valuable to us all, when you are doing something, which is part of the solution for a
better world. Kindness, planned, or random, is one gift we can give others every day and
what a gift we will have when others are doing this, too. What a world this will be!
Happy holidays to you all!
Holiday Open House...You Are Invited!
Massage in Nahant
By Susan Cadigan, LMT, CNMT/MM, NCTMB, Nahant Therapeutic Massage
There are a number of therapists licensed in MA, who live in Nahant. We are all
different and bring our own unique experience, training and abilities to the table.
I know of one therapist who is a nurse and uses her training at the clinic, where she
works. Another is a recent graduate who is building a practice in Salem, with convenient
hours to many of the business people located nearby.
Recently, someone called and asked if I was “the one from Hawaii.” I was baffled at
first, then realized that another local therapist has lived in Hawaii and is located on the
main road. I happen to look Hawaiian due to my heritage.
My practice is tucked inside the Community Center, at the former Valley Road
School, in the center of town. I began bodywork in 1985, when I was 25, with Toshiko
Tsurumi Phipps.
In 1937, Toshiko was the first woman member of Japan’s Downhill Ski Team and
was to represent Japan in the Olympics. Of both men and women, she was THE National
Downhill Skiing Champion. With being an elite athlete my teacher had her share of
injuries and bodywork to remedy those. Toshiko was educated in body work through
hands on experience and in Japan and China. She even treated the Japan Royal Family.
She helped to establish the AOBTA and her school, Nippon Shiatsu Daigaku, in Putney,
VT.
I was gifted with Toshiko’s teaching and influence. I sat elbow to elbow with my
teacher, as she gave “treatment.” I absorbed everything. Her influences and experiences
were handed to me and became my roots, as I developed my style.
After a hiatus to battle a couple of bouts of blood/marrow cancer (acute leukemia), I
picked up the pieces and began to put them back in place. Enduring biopsies, low/high
dose chemotherapies and study drugs, I know how it is to feel pain, anxiety and
stress.Having been athletic and enjoying sports, I had my fair share of injuries. I still feel
the effects (especially in winter) from competitive weight-lifting in the mid 80’s and the
torn muscles from martial arts training. In 2002, I went western and brought East and
West together by integrating traditional western approaches in bodywork with the Japanese/Eastern.
This came naturally because I am both East and West. My mother is from
Japan and my father is American. With the background in illness and recovery, and
sports and injury, I integrate into sessions techniques that go beyond the surface and help
resolve long standing muscular issues of body, as well as help heal mind and spirit.
Thank you for blessing me with your business and referrals. I am honored and truly
grateful. I wish you and yours a safe and peaceful holiday season.
I appreciate your questions and welcome you to call me on my cell: 617-240-4252,
Aches and Pains Associated with Aging
By Susan Finigan, North Shore Physical Therapy
Q. How do I know if the aches and pains I feel can be helped by physical therapy or
are just part of getting older
A. Normal aches and pains associated with “aging,” usually lessen as the day
progresses and you are able to move around doing your normal daily activities. The
morning pain and stiffness does not limit your activities during the day.
If you are experiencing a pain that is persistent throughout the day, or varies with
specific activities, and the pain is more than just a low-grade ache, you may benefit from
physical therapy. You may need to consult your doctor.
If you experience a restriction in a joint, such as decreased ability to turn your neck,
bend, or straighten your knee, or have difficulty rolling in bed, or getting out of bed, or
difficulty with lifting your arm, this is not normal “aging.” This lack of motion accompanied
by pain is not normal.
If you find you’re not able to walk distances, climb stairs, or reach for objects on a
shelf, you may be lacking appropriate strength, or endurance, to carry out these tasks.
If you are experiencing limitations and/or pain throughout the day, you are experiencing
more than just “aging.” These are problems that can be corrected with physical
therapy.
If you feel you may benefit from physical therapy, but are not sure, call North Shore
Physical Therapy. You may call to discuss your problem with a physical therapist, or
schedule a free, 30-minute injury screen, with an expert physical therapist who will
assess your problem and make recommendations to meet your needs.
To schedule a free injury screen, call Marblehead (781-631-8250), or Salem (978-
910-0486).
Tips For Outdoor Winter Safety
By Susan Finigan, North Shore Physical
Therapy
Q. Last winter, I slipped on black ice, falling and
fracturing my wrist. Do you have any suggestions to make
it safer for me to go out this winter
A. Falling on the ice happens to people of all ages.
There are several steps you can take to protect yourself
from falling. Don’t go outside, even if it is only for a
minute, wearing your slippers. As physical therapists, we
often hear stories from people who hurt themselves going
outside “just to get the newspaper,” not taking the time to
put on appropriate shoe wear. It is easy to miss a very thin
coating of ice, especially in the early morning.
Choosing a shoe or boot with good traction is one of
the best ways to protect yourself. Some shoes with large
treads appear to offer good traction but are actually fairly
slippery. A light hiking boot may be better. There are
several types of ice grippers or traction devices that can be
purchased at sporting goods stores and catalogues and
even discount stores. They fit easily over any shoe and
decrease the risk of falling. If you use a cane or crutches,
you can buy a device with metal teeth that fits easily on
the end of the cane or crutch to provide more traction on
ice.
Using a product like sand or ice melt over the icy
areas on your steps and driveway is important. Be sure to
spread the sand liberally. You may want to keep some of it
in the car as well as by your door.
Good lighting is also key to outdoor safety. Be sure
you have adequate outdoor lighting and carry a flashlight
when walking outside in the dark.
Finally, when walking where it may be slippery, be
sure to focus ONLY on walking. Do not talk and walk at
the same time or search for keys in a purse or pocket.
Attend only to walking. Walk with your feet slightly apart
and keep the length of each step shorter than normal.
Taking these precautions will increase your safety in
slippery winter conditions.
by the London Welsh Male Voice Choir to participate in
their Festival of Welsh Male Choirs in London’s Royal
Albert Hall in October 1992. Since then, the Men’s
chorus has sung numerous benefit concerts throughout
New England supporting a variety of charities in their
fund-raising efforts.
The Chorus has sung regularly in the biennial Albert
Hall Welsh Male Chorus Festivals. Other performances
have included Carnegie Hall, Salisbury and Winchester
Cathedrals, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts and on
WGBH. In addition to London, the group has also traveled
to Vancouver and Toronto, Canada, and Lisbon, Portugal.
The time has come — time to check out the future of the Life-Saving Station,
Nahant’s newest historic renovation. The day after the Christmas Parade, Sunday, December
19th, bring the family to the Boat Room Open House. Come see the newly
renovated interior of Nahant’s former Coast Guard Station, now known as the Nahant
Life-Saving Station.
We’ve all been waiting for this day a long time. Come see the fruits of our labors,
from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., on Sunday, December 19th. We’ll have a little something on
hand, to ward off the chill and other things to catch your interest. Plan to park at the
Lowlands lot, or walk to the Station — parking on the Station grounds will be limited to
marked, handicap vehicles.
You’ve all seen the construction equipment on the grounds of the Station for
months. Some of you have noticed new windows and doors being installed. Much more
has been happening inside — new plumbing, electrical, fire protection and ventilation
systems, as well as major carpentry, all done to make ready the building for serving as
Nahant’s newest resource. In short, the building has had a makeover.
In the Station’s new life, the Boat-Room will serve as a function room, as well as
for other uses. The Boat-Room is where we will welcome you on the 19th. We’re ready
to start booking events to be held in the new Boat-Room, as well as outside on the
grounds. Some folks in Nahant have already held birthday parties and the like, over the
last few years. In fact, if you have an event in mind, bring along your ideas for dates and
get “penciled in” on the calendar.
The first floor will have more to show you, too — the proud new home of the
Nahant Veteran’s Association, a catering kitchen to support food service for events in the
Boat-Room and, on the grounds, an office space that will be offered for long-term rental.
The second floor, before too long, will become a very desirable apartment, generating
rent that will help to maintain the building. The 2nd floor is a work in progress, so the
open house will be limited to the newly-completed first floor.
The key to the building’s new use is the Boat-Room, the central space, where
surfboats were kept. The original surfboats were kept on carts and run out to the surfline
by horse teams, to be launched in a rescue. Part of the restoration goal at the Life-Saving
Station is to help visitors understand the Station’s historic mission and colorful past.
We’ll be assembling a multi-image presentation that will be on display, at the Open
House. “Art of the Station” will consist of historic images, family snapshots, postcards,
artwork, paintings, drawings and other memorabilia, that includes an image of the
Station. We’d like images from any era, from the earliest days of the Station, up until
today. There’s still time for creativity. Prizes will be awarded during the Open House on
the 19th, so dig out those images and be part of the “Art of the Station” show!
Before long, the Boat-Room will also be our central point for displays, that will
present the history of the Station and the techniques of the Life-Saving Service, which
included the Lyle line-throwing cannon and the breeches buoy rescue mechanism, in
addition to the surfboats.
To have your favorite image, item, or artwork of the Station, included in the show
on the 19th, bring it to the 41Gallery, located on the second floor of the Nahant Community
Center (the former Valley Road School), at 41 Valley Road, for scanning, between
10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., any Wednesday, between now and the 19th of December. We
will do a quick, high-resolution scan while you wait! Or, if you have digital images in
high-resolution form, drop them off, at the same time, on CD, or we’ll copy them from
your thumb drive. We also can photograph your paintings, or drawings, while you wait.
Please feel free to email Robert Wilson, webmaster@nahantpreservationtrust.org, if you
have any questions, or would like to schedule a scan, or photograph.
When you come to the Station on the 19th, bring along your holiday enthusiasm,
but bring along a donation of a non-perishable food item, for the food drive collection,
held in the Station parking lot. Please feel free to bring your car into the lot to drop-off
the items, before you proceed to park at the Lowlands.
This milestone is a time to acknowledge deep thanks to the efforts of many of
Nahant’s stalwart volunteers, to generous donations and grants, to our collaboration with
the Nahant Veterans Association and to funding through the Community Preservation
Act. The CPA has leveraged Nahant’s dollars with major matching funds from a state
source. While the Station is owned by the Town, it is under a long-term lease to the
Nahant Preservation Trust. NPT achieved a similar adaptive reuse to turn the former
Valley Road School, into today’s Nahant Community Center, at 41 Valley Road.
This historic building is close to the hearts of many in Nahant. It’s been a point of
pride in Town, for a long time. Come on out on Sunday, December 19th, from 1:00 to
4:00 p.m., to share in the new pride we can have in THIS restoration — to make our
proud history a living resource for Nahant’s future.
NAHANT HARBOR REVIEW • DECEMBER 2010 • Page 11
The Nahant Dory Club News
The Town Class had a good year completing 19 races
and finishing their season in September. Rex Antrim, the
2010 National Town Class Champion and Nick Strange,
battled for the lead all summer, with Nick finally winning
the season championship. Pete Dickenson was a close
third, during the season and won the Clarence Tibbo
Labor Day Cup.
The Town Class, first built almost 75years ago by the
Pert Lowell Co of Newbury, has historic links to Nahant,
as the Dory Club was the second club to start a fleet.
There are additional fleets in Marblehead, Rhode Island
and New Hampshire. Next August, the Dory Club will
host the Nationals and help celebrate the 75th Anniversary
of the building of the first boat. Part of the celebrations
will be the renewal of the Walsh Cup team races,
between the various fleets. Originally, the Walsh Cup was
for team racing, between the Nahant and Marblehead
fleets. The Walsh Cup racing died several decades ago,
but was recently resurrected by the Dory Club and revised
to include all fleets. It is raced whenever the Dory Club
hosts the Nationals.
Several Dory Club racers entered the September
25th, Sixth Annual Boston Harbor Islands Regatta. Jody
Graul and family, racing Summerin, placed fifth in their
division, fifth overall in the Non-Spinnaker Fleet and won
The Gelb Family Trophy for boats with an all-family
crew. Peter Davis, racing Moondance in the same division,
was twelfth and fifteenth overall. Dan McMackin,
sailing Saoirse, was fifth in his division and twentieth
overall in the fleet. This was a very good showing by Nahanters, as they were racing
against over 100 other boats.
The annual By George Race, around Georges Island and return, for the PHRF boats,
was postponed because of high winds and rough seas. Aeolus, the god of wind and his
Father Poseidon, God of the Oceans, took out their frustrations on the racers, holding
them responsible for the failure of their beloved Red Sox to make the playoffs. With
winds clocked at 28 miles per hour, discretion won out over valor. The race was finally
run a week later, with Ed Tarlov finishing first, Tim VonAschwege second and Larry
Connolly, third. It was windy, but only up to 20 miles per hour. It appears the sacrifices
made to appease the angry gods were sufficient to calm them, to a degree.
The second year of Tuesday night “Family Night” sailing for kids, continued to
grow in 2010. Established last year by Philip Kersten and John Fulghum, it is a program
designed to help prepare junior sailors for participation in regional regattas and to spend
a weekday evening sailing and socializing. Among the junior sailors participating were
the Carbones, Ryan Connolly, Olivia Fulghum, the Frauenholzs, the Kerstens and
Westhovens. All showed tremendous improvement throughout the season. In addition to
the great time on the water, the families enjoyed the sunsets from the Dory Club patio,
with potluck dinners adding to the magic of hanging out in the NDC clubhouse and at
the wharf.
During the summer, Dory Club junior sailors Nick and Lauren Kersten, Ryan
Frauenholz and Ian Antrim, represented the Dory Club at regattas in New Bedford,
Hingham Bay, Duxbury, Scituate and Marblehead Junior Race week. A complete report
on all junior racing will be in the next Nahant Sailing Program article in the Harbor
Review. Additional information can be found at https://sites.google.com/site/
nspandndcwithoptis/Home/2010-races
2010 was another good year for the local Laser sailors. The loosely organized the
group held numerous informal races and group sails throughout the summer. With more
new sailors and boats joining the mix, the promise for continued organization and
momentum builds. In addition to the core group of the sailors who participated last year
(John Fulghum, Doug Frauenholz, Phil Russell, Greg Marie, Abbott Lowell, Lenny
Frisoli and Philip Kersten), new sailors: Ulf Westhoven, Roger Pasinski, Kevin Gregory,
Bob Baldwin, Nick Strange and Marc Carbone, joined the fun this summer. With Peter
Davis and Mark Pillsbury ready to join the fun in 2011, it already looks like a promising
season to come. To further build on the established momentum, the Laser fleet has the
goal of continuing a monthly sail through the winter, enabling a strong start into the next
season with an even larger group of boats.
The members’ annual closing party and awards night was held November 13th. A
summary of the awards and results of the annual meeting will be reported in January.
Holiday House Tour Returns to Lynn
Catholic Charities North and Lynn Arts Inc. are
excited to announce a new collaboration to bring a Holiday
House Tour to Lynn. The Tour will take place in the
historic, beachside Diamond District, on Saturday, December
11th, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Guests will
pick up their Event Guide, with a map of the Tour, at
either organization (55 Lynn Shore Drive, or 25 Exchange
Street) and begin to view the festively decorated homes at
their own pace. Raffle chances and holiday shopping will
be available at both locations. Guests can also opt to
purchase a combination ticket that entitles them to attend
a Preview Party, on Friday, December 10th, at Lynn Arts.
That event will include holiday treats, decorating demonstrations,
music and shopping.
The homeowners whose properties are featured on
the tour, have agreed to open their homes, free of cost, to
the sponsoring organizations. Tour gests will step into a
warm and festive atmosphere at each home. Some
homeowners will feature their own antiques, or decorations,
while others plan to work with local interior designers
and florists to create elegant focal pieces.
One such partnership is with Craig and Julie Hawley,
a couple residing in Nahant, who own Finds by Julie.
They will stage a Safari Christmas, by displaying the
homeowners’ extensive collection of African wildlife
photos. The home will feature a tree, with an 18 foot
python tree skirt. A 19th century viola, playing Christmas
music, will set the mood. Everything in that home is
donated by the homeowner, or by generous local vendors,
including the Hawleys of Finds by Julie, J & J Draperies
of Swampscott and Marblehead Garden Center. Craig
Hawley is happy to take requests for interviews, by email,
at craig@findsbyjulie.com, or cell phone, 617-240-0770.
Children’s Theatre of Light Facing the Dark
The Theatre of Light, a non-profit children’s theatre comprised of young actors ages
5 to 18, is in dire need of a new place to rent as its home-base by January 1st. Without a
new space to rehearse and perform in, the theatre will not be able to continue the community
service it has offered to hundreds of children during the past 8 years.
The Theatre of Light was created in 2003 in Marblehead as a service to all North
Shore communities offering theatrical training and performance opportunities to children
of all levels of ability. The group works on a very tight budget and relies on participation
fees and fundraising events to keep afloat but has managed to also raise funds for scholarships
so that any child’s family who lacks the ability to pay the participation fee can
still be involved.
Without finding a rehearsal space, small storage room, and stage to perform on, the
Theatre of Light will have to close after their upcoming December production of “Annie,
Jr.” “It will be a very sad time for so many children if our theatre has to close”, according
to volunteer Director Barbara Eyges of Marblehead. “The kids, who are from various
North Shore communities, including Nahant, in addition to our staff of volunteers and
parents have grown so close over the years to the point that we consider ourselves a
family. “The Theatre of Light is made up of dedicated and caring people. My daughter
has performed in several of the theatre’s productions, which have been a wonderful
experience for her plus she has gained self-confidence and made new friendships. It
would be a shame if the theatre could not continue,” comments Terri Tauro of
Marblehead.
The children, parents, and volunteers of Theatre of Light are hoping that someone
can recommend a place for the group to move to by January 1st. The group needs some
space in a building such as a church, temple, or organization that has a stage large
enough for 45 children to rehearse and perform on, in addition to a small storage area for
props and scenery. Another option is to find a place that has a large room to rehearse in
with a small storage room; the theatre could then rent an auditorium at a school to do
their performances.
For the past 4 years, the Theatre of Light is grateful to have been based in the
auditorium at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Salem. This space filled the needs of the
theatre, but once again the group has to move because the church needs every part of the
building for their growing youth ministry.
If anyone can suggest a place that the Theatre of Light can rent for a new homebase,
or for rehearsals and performances, please call 781-631-8175 or email the theatre at
theatreoflight@comcast.net.
Photos of the children performing in numerous productions can be seen on the
theatre’s website at www.theatreoflight.com. Call info: Barbara Eyges, 781-631-8175
Letter to Nahant
Hello old friends. It’s been a while. As some of you may know, I’ve been studying
film at NYU. It seems like just yesterday that I left the island for the big city, but I’m
already approaching my final semester. Time has flown by. I’m told that this is a trend I
should get used to!
As I near the end of my academic career, I keep thinking about the place that it all
started: Nahant. My formative years were spent running around Spring Road, shooting
movies with friends. We would start by coming up with an idea during lunch at Captain’s
Seaside. We would finish a couple of hours later, by shooting the climax in “the dump.”
I’m still doing that in New York, except on a slightly larger scale.
Now I’ve shed my baby fat and instead of making five-minute mafia movies, or
videos of my Johnson School invention for Mrs. White, I’m making my first feature
film. It’s called “The Confabulators.” Oh, and now making movies is expensive! The
Confabulators is the first project that I’ve ever truly been passionate about.
We start shooting in January, but my team and are trying to raise funds and have
posted a series of shorts that coincide with the film on our website. I’d love to share
them with you.
If you are interested in the movie (or would like to donate), please visit
www.TheConfabulators.com. E-mail me at TheseConfabulators@gmail.com, with any
questions and comments about the film.
NAHANT HARBOR REVIEW • DECEMBER 2010 • Page 13
From The Editor:
It’s become one of Nahant’s strangest traditions. Every New Year’s
Day at noon, Nahanters young and old, who are otherwise normal
people, gather at the Nahant Life-Saving Station and run into the bracing
waters of Short Beach.
Believe it or not, it’s a lot of fun and there’s great comraderie and
spirit as everyone suffers together and then rushes home to warm up with
a cup of tea, or perhaps something more fortifying.
So join your neighbors, just prior to noon, for the mad dash for the
sea, which happens precisely at noon, at the Nahant Life-Saving Station.
Show the world the “stuff” of which Nahanters are made!
Remember, if you are a wee bit late, you will have missed the boat!
Let Your Light Shine! Christmas Fair at Nahant Village Church
December 4th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The holiday season is here! Who is ready, who has time Well, ready or not, it is here! Time to gather your wits and search for all those special
gifts to show your love and appreciation to your friends and family. So, come one, come all. Begin your Christmas shopping, and socializing, at the
Nahant Village Church, on Saturday, December 5th, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Come celebrate the Christmas season with your friends and neighbors.
Year after year, more fun, fellowship and Christmas cheer, is crammed into the cozy confines of Swansburg Hall, than one can imagine. The
elves suggest that fairgoers arrive early for the best bargains and first picks at the tables.
Santa will arrive at 11:00 a.m., carefully transported by Nahant’s Finest Firefighters. This is a great photo opportunity! Bring your cameras and
the kiddies for photos with Santa, until 1:00 p.m., at which time Santa will be off to his next stop! A very busy time of year for Santa.
The Snack Bar will feature lobster rolls, fresh soups and sandwiches and other tasty delights. The Silent Auction in the Chapel and the Raffles in
the Companionway, offer chances to win many beautiful items and gift certificates. The Baked Goods and Prepared Foods table is groaning under the
weight of the tasty holiday breads, cakes, pies and jars of homemade relishes, jellies, jams and Jackie’s Famous Penucci and Hot Fudge Sauces, not to
mention sticky and sweet treats like baklava and haystacks. Give in to temptation.
The Greenery elves have been hard at work making bows and arranging greenery to grace your mantels, tables and doors. The Gifts and Crafts
Table will offer an assortment of ready-made and handcrafted gifts, decorations, crocheted and knitted toys, sweaters, hats, scarfs and mittens. The
Jewelry Table is sparkling and gleaming with lots of beautiful pins, earrings, necklaces and bracelets, at bargain prices, just waiting for you to find a
special treasure. For book readers, the NVC Hardly Used Book Library is full of paperbacks and hard-cover books, for, basically, pennies.
If you would like to make a financial contribution, or other donation to the fair, please email Donna Lee Hanlon, this year’s Head Elf, at
donna@nahant.com, for more information. We thank the people of Nahant for their generous support in past years and look forward to seeing you
ALL again.
MERRY CHRISTMAS
NAHANT
The last verse of a Longfellow poem
dedicated to Nahant
‘Tis The Season Of Giving
Is it our imagination, or is it true that at this time of year, whether you believe in
Adam and Eve, or the Darwin theory, we, the human specie, actually become HUMANE.
We tend to love, understand and give, unconditionally, to our fellow beings, and that’s a
“Great thing”!
With that thought, last month’s column asked you to vote at the spring 2011 Town
Meeting, on Article #27, section #16, which simply grants all Nahant Super-Seniors that
are 90 years and older, a “FILTER FREE CARD,” which, just like our driver’s license, is
to be kept on us at all times. Seeing that Duddie, Ponzie and the rest of the Tudor Cocktail
Ice Co. staff, have been around since 1826 and obviously, are all well over 90 years
old, we support the article,(SEE CARD SAMPLE BELOW). As we stated last month,
our staff supports one’s rights to political correctness and the “filtering” of one’s comments.
Unfortunately, due to our advanced age our “filtering system” tends to be fairly
non-existent. The rules of filtering and political correctness keep changing daily. We are
finding it difficult to keep up with those changes.
Case in point, 90+ ol’ brother Ponzie, while making holiday cocktail ice deliveries,
was driving the ice wagon over the causeway last week and got arrested for reckless
driving and harassment. It seems while trying to keep the speedometer at 25 MPH he
took his eyes off the road, hitting a brand new Lincoln Continental. According to the
police report, Ponzie, knowing he was totally at fault, went to apologize and do the right
thing, by exchanging papers. A vertically-challenged (we hope and pray that term is PC),
driver got out of that new Lincoln. The report read the gentleman proceeded to give
Ponzie a verbal tongue lashing.
THE DRIVER EXCLAIMED, “I’M NOT HAPPY”
Being shaken by the situation and in total innocence, Ponsie replied, “Well, which
one are you”
Ponsie’s bail was set at $10,000, with a 6-month sensitivity program tacked on.
If Ponzie had the “NAHANT RESIDENT FILTER FREE CARD,” this whole sad
tale would have never taken place. The card would have been presented to the offended
party, (kind of a get out of jail free card) and the “filtering” slip-up would have been
resolved.
VOTE YES ON ARTICLE #27, SECTION #16.
Oh heck, we’ve gone this far, might as well hit on another sacred cow: Adam and
Eve VS the Darwin theory. While trying to be PC and make everyone happy, maybe we
all should wear a sign that reads: “AGNOSTIC, COVER YOUR BETS”
“HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND TRY TO LIGHTEN UP, WILL YA”
LOVE, THE SUPER-SENIORS OF THE TUDOR COCKTAIL ICE CO. STAFF
Seven nights before Christmas
In the evening – December 19, 2009—the roads
Of Nahant—flashing with lights—
The annual Christmas Parade—deafening
Full of cheers, car horn noises, carol melodies.
Nahanters salute from the walkways
In front of their decorated wreathed doors…
On such a night –a Christmas Party
At the almost 200-year-old Jenkins’ Hill House
Invited the islanders celebrating…
Seated near the fiercely burning fireplace
I am attracted by a huge lady’s portrait
In a large gold ornamental frame.
Her dress striped green and gray
With a delicate white lace open collar,
Wearing a diamond brooch.
She looks at me with dark brown eyes
Her face rose-red from the fire’s waves:
“Welcome to the Jenkins’ house”—her voice echoes—
“If I could, I would be playing this mahogany piano
As I once did on a Christmas Eve.
By chance, as a ghost, as a little bird
I fly tonight in awe!—to the Christmas tree
Where the unseen ghosts of this aged house
Become the white angels
Enjoying the party from their green perches…
A cup of the red Christmas wassail punch—the old style,
I have the desire to drink, to wish:
Blessed are you Nahanters tonight in this place
The past is never dead!”
I elbow through the crowd—the party guests
In the three big living rooms,
No music, no dance. Only conversations.
Cavaliers’ red pants and bow ties; elegant ladies in
backless gowns—
Standing, stepping, meeting and toasting each other
With crystal wine glasses—meanwhile chatting and
laughing…
There are antique objects in this museum house
Like old and new telephones—cellphones that men
Put in their pockets—the wiggling-blue lights shine
Like a handful of fireflies…
The past never dies:
A perpetual Christmas memory
on the rock island
In the 21st century dawn
And centuries from now.
Merry Christmas Nahant!
Useless Information...By Ray Barron
Nahant’s December Birthday Babies
Remembering The Veterans
The Veterans’ Day tribute last month, featuring the
5th-and 6th-Grade Students of the Johnson School, was a
stirring and memorable event! In short, the combined
classes honored the men and women veterans of Nahant
with patriotic songs and recitations. What’s more, the
students created essays honoring the veterans. Add to this,
their parents created a delicious luncheon for the veterans.
It was a day to remember, especially for the World War II
veterans, since many of them are passing away at the rate
of a thousand a day. We have Peggy O’Leary-Silva to
thank, for originating the annual tribute to veterans.
Another inspiring feature of the event was the noted
Musicologist, Victor DalPozzal and his North Shore
Songsters, performing a medley of songs.
Thanks to the children, and the Johnson School
faculty, for honoring the men and women whose military
service has kept our nation safe and strong, whose sacrifices
have helped preserve the freedoms Americans enjoy
today. Happy Holidays!
Birthday Greetings!
2011 Harbor Review Subscribers Updated as of November 20, 2010
Ahoy, Nahanters! These are the Nahant Harbor Review Subscribers, so far, for 2011. Thank you! Thank you!
This is the first of two subscription drives for 2011. It would help tremendously, paperwork-wise, if the subscriptions that expire in the
beginning months of 2011, renew now for the entire calendar year. The next subscription drive will be held in June, for those who subscribed in
the middle of 2010. Subscription dates will be updated a full year. The list has been updated as of November 25, 2010. Renewal dates follow the
subscriber’s name. So, now is a really good time to renew. Get it out of the way early in the year and help the Harbor Review get through the
winter without too much difficulty. If half the households in Nahant sent in a $20 subscription for Home Delivery, I would have no worries! The
subscription money goes to pay the Nahant Harbor Review Delivery Crew.
Speaking of the Delivery Crew, these young people care about doing a good job. They work hard to accommodate the subscribers on their
routes. Please make yourselves’ known to them and remember them this holiday season, with a tip for service. Thank you. (If you are unsure
who your delivery person is, send me an email with your address: donna@nahant.com and I will email to you, the crew member’s name, immediately.
To subscribe, please complete the 2011 subscription form below, cut it out and enclose it in an envelope. You can mail your subscription
form to the Nahant Harbor Review, PO Box 88, Nahant, MA 01908, OR save a stamp and drop the envelope in the Harbor Review’s community
box, on the Teller’s counter, inside the Nahant Equitable Cooperative Bank.
Please check below for your name and if I have made an error, or omission, please email me: donna@nahant.com, or drop a note in the
Review box at the Bank and it will be corrected. Thanks for continuing to support your community newspaper.
The Nahant Harbor Review is an independently-owned community newspaper, which is published monthly by Donna Lee Hanlon DBA
Seaside Business Services, a woman-owned and operated, sole proprietorship, located in Nahant, Massachusetts. The Nahant Harbor Review
receives no government, or public, funding. The Nahant Harbor Review newspaper is solely supported by advertising sales, voluntary subscriptions
and donations from friends of the newspaper.
LuxeBeautiQue An Award Winning Spa in Swampscott
Makeup Artist, Amy (DePerrior) Brackman, owner of LuxeBeautiQue, has
brought her love of makeup artistry, along with a very talented team of artists and
estheticians, to the North Shore. Located at 434 Humphrey St in Swampscott, Luxe
originally opened at 222 Humphrey Street, then expanded into a beautiful new location
at 434 Humphrey Street, which allowed them to add more staff and incredible
services, including eyelash extensions.
When I was invited to come in for a complementary massage and facial, I
couldn’t resist. I was curious to meet the staff and see their product line. I dragged
myself in at the scheduled time and was given a brief tour by Ms. Amy Brackman,
owner and master make-up artist. (Her photo is below.) I was whisked off to a quiet,
sparsely lit room, with a comfy looking massage table in the center of the room,
where I met Ms Palmer. I was asked a few health-related questions and was asked to
remove my clothing and slip between the covers on the table. I was left alone. A few
moments later, Ms. Palmer returned and quietly began the massage. It was heavenly.
Her warm, soft hands worked my tired, achy muscles. As I began to relax, her calm
and soothing touch became firmer and her pressure deepened. She worked different
pressure points in my back, releasing tension and inducing a calm, peaceful feeling.
Ms. Diane Palmer, LMT, RPP, in the late 90s, was Founder, Director and CEO of
the Palmer Institute of Massage & Bodywork in
Salem, MA. She touched, taught and helped heal many students and has made a lasting impression on many lives.
Ms. Palmer has self-published, five, massage-related workbooks that were used at the Palmer Institute. She is the
author of, “The Palmer Method of Massage,” a step-by-step guide to Massage Therapy. Presently, Diane teachs
Polarity Therapy through an APTA approved training, on the North Shore and is a Master Massage & Polarity
Therapist at LuxeBeautiQue in Swampscott, MA. Well, she sure knows how to relax an overworked, stressed-out
body. (Photo above: Diane Palmer performing massge and Ashley Schrater giving a facial to the editor.)
After about an hour of Ms. Palmer’s “Peace Massage,” Ashley Schrater, Master Medical Esthetician &
Makeup Artist, came into the room to give me a facial. Ashley is from Marblehead. She recently left The Loft
Salon, on Newbury Street, where she ran the Spa, worked with clients and specialized in facials, anti-aging
treatments, waxing and makeup. She has been featured in several magazines for her esthetic work and amazing
makeup artistry work. Ashley prides herself in working one-on-one with clients. I could tell. Ashley did a great
job. My worry lines smoothed out and my skin was baby soft when she finished.
I wasn’t able to meet all the staff members, they were with clients or otherwise unavailable, but they include
Dr. Jean Keamy, Aesthetic Surgeon & Board Certified Ophthalmologist. Dr. Keamy performs Botox, Radiesse &
Juvederm, Vegan Manicures & Pedicures and massage.
“It is only natural that we welcome a medical expert in our new and expanded locations. Our clients were
asking for anti-aging products like Botox, Radiesse and Juvederm, so we looked for the best expert in the field,
who happens to reside right here in Swampscott,” says Amy.
Dr. Keamy is the General Manager of Keamy Eye and Laser Centre in Westborough. She is also a Clinical Instructor at Tufts School of Medicine
and is board certified in Ophthalmology. She was the Director of Refractive Surgery at Fallon Clinic in Worcester, a Refractive Surgery Fellow at
Gimbell Eye Center in Canada and an Ophthalmology Resident at New England Eye Center, Tufts University School of Medicine
Other staff members include Neysa Porter, Master Medical Esthetician/Makeup Artist; Cara Borseti, Master Medical Esthetician & Makeup
Artist; Vera Mustafaraj, Master Medical Esthetician/ Makeup Artist; Elyse Ferragamo, Master Lash Tech & Esthetician & Makeup Artist; Nancy
NAHANT HARBOR REVIEW • DECEMBER 2010 • Page 19
Women and Wishes Raise Over $10,000
Women and Wishes recently held a very successful fall fundraiser (Kickin’ &
Sippin’ at Club 280) at the Nahant Country Club. The mission for this non-profit organization
is to help better the lives of women and children by helping them advance economically,
emotionally and socially. As we work together to fulfill these needs, we
positively impact the quality of life of women and children.
This event was attended by the Greater North Shore community who got to enjoy
music by “The Classmates,” fabulous food provided by the Nahant Country Club staff
and many raffles and silent auction items. Over $10,000 was raised, enabling several
wishes to be granted, in recent weeks. Women in need, who are not eligible for Federal,
State, or Local assistance, can request a one-time wish by accessing www.women and
wishes.org and follow the application for a wish.
A warm and sincere “Thank you!” is extended to our many supporters and workers
who helped make this fundraiser a huge success.
won’t be here for long. Someone will take her home real
If your birdfeeding area is messy,
we can offer seed out of the hull,
such as sunflower chips, or a
much less mess and debris below
Lightly butter both sides of bread. Place a layer of buttered bread in the baking
dish. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Pour egg mixture over bread till covered. Add another
