Suspect in robberies nabbed in Saline

A suspect in the robberies of 

two Tecumseh businesses this 

past week has been caught. The 

suspect is a 27-year-old 

Caseville, Mich., man who was 

nabbed in Saline after robbing 

Domino’s Pizza on Michigan 

Ave. Monday afternoon, according 

to press reports. 

“He is a very good suspect,” 

said Tecumseh Police Chief 

Troy Stern, who cautioned that 

evidence is still being evaluated. 

The department is continuing its 

investigation and encourages 

anyone with information to call 

423.7494. 

The Caseville man held up 

the Saline business Monday at 

3:30 p.m. when he took an 

undisclosed amount of cash. He 

assaulted an employee, who suffered 

abrasions and bruising, 

during the robbery, and was 

pulled over by police while 

attempting to leave Saline in a 

older blue pickup truck. 

Police are comparing similarities 

to the robberies of 

Fabricare in Tecumseh on 

Thursday, Jan. 19, and on 

Saturday, Jan. 21, at Modish 

Hair Salon in downtown. In both 

robberies, an undisclosed 

amount of cash was taken at 

knifepoint, although no one was 

injured. 

Fabricare was held up at 9 

p.m. where one employee was 

working and able to give police 

a description of the suspect, but 

not of the suspect’s vehicle. The 

second Tecumseh robbery 

occurred in daylight around 5 

p.m. during the downtown Ice 

Festival, where three employees 

of Modish Hair Salon and two 

pedestrians outside the business 

witnessed the suspect and his 

vehicle. He entered the hair 

salon by the front entrance and 

left through a back door where 

he had parked a dark colored 

pickup truck. He left the scene 

southbound on Ottawa Street. 

Saline police reported that a 

Tecumseh woman and a child 

were riding with the Caseville 

man in a blue truck when it was 

stopped on Maple Road. The 

woman, whose identity was not 

disclosed, was repeatedly 

yelling “what did you do” to the 

suspect, according to reports. 

The suspect is currently 

being held at the Washtenaw 

County Jail.

Community Arts of Tecumseh 

(CAT) will be trying something a 

little different this February and 

March by offering courses in Brain- 

Compatible Dance, an idea pioneered by 

educator Anne Green Gilbert. “Babies in 

Motion,” and “Toddlers in Motion” will 

debut at the Art Center in John W. Smith 

Park, 804 N. Evans Street, Tecumseh, 

beginning Feb. 7. 

CAT leaders learned through word-ofmouth 

that Brain-Compatible Dance 

Instructor Janet Frederick might be available 

to teach classes to infants and their 

parents and caregivers and decided to give 

it a try. Frederick joined CAT Executive 

Director Laura Mastrorocco and Adrienne 

Ayers, Program Director, on Tuesday, Jan. 

24, to work out class arrangements. 

Frederick said she has been involved 

with Brain-Compatible Dance since 2007 

when she went to Seattle, Washington, to 

learn the program. 

“I learned from the guru, Anne Green 

Gilbert who is an internationally recognized 

leader in creative dance,” said 

Frederick, who not only offered trial classes 

in the Toledo area, but helped incorporate 

a component into Bowling Green State 

University curriculum for physical educators.

through a physical education program at 

Liberty Center, Ohio, for 30 years. 

Frederick said the program is very cerebral, 

and so much more is known about 

brain development and how it’s connected 

to movement than in the past. 

“Anne Green Gilbert actually started as 

an early childhood major who taught third 

graders and minored in dance,” said 

Frederick. “Through working with her students, 

she used movement in her math and 

language and other lessons. She found that 

attendance went up because the students 

wanted to be there, and movement helped 

the students learn the concepts and test 

scores went up.” Frederick said that the 

program incorporates more than visual and 

audio, but also kinesthetic learning. 

Research has shown connections with gifted 

learners as well as helping those with 

learning disabilities. 

In the babies and toddler programs that 

Frederick will be leading in Tecumseh, 

classes are developed and taught knowing 

that movement, a multi-sensory environment, 

and a loving relationship with a 

caregiver are crucial to healthy development 

in the early years. The curriculum 

focuses on introducing the patterns of the 

BrainDance (a copyrighted term developed 

by Gilbert) through rhymes and songs, 

developmentally appropriate movement,

Challenge to kick

Challenge will gear up on 

Sunday, Jan. 29, with a “Kick 

Off the Weight” event featuring

Somewhere along the way, I missed mentioning 

my 2,200th column. Yes, indeed, I am still here 

thanks to both Jim Lincolns — the sweet guy who 

took me on and his equally sweet son — who kept 

me on when his dad died. 

I also owe a lot to those who’ve been there to 

give me a boost or give me h…when I hit a nerve. 

Compliments and criticism are equally welcome.

least. 

I have had this same cozy corner for 27 years, leaving it in limbo 

just once — in 1987 — when BG was having heart valve replacement 

surgery. He did a re-run six months later for a perforated gall bladder 

and, while I was prepared with a column, I was not prepared for the 

near-death situation. Then there was a back procedure — dynamic stabilization 

decompression — in 2009. 

I almost missed my Jan. 9 deadline when, again, my pal was at St. 

Joe’s for still another operation. He’d been short of breath for a couple 

weeks, saw his doctor and was referred to a pulmonologist who did a 

thoracenticis, draining a quart and a half of pink-tinged fluid from 

around a collapsed lung. We were stunned. “The next step,” we were 

told, “is VATS [video assisted thorascopic surgery.] “And we’re not 

ruling out cancer,” the doctor added. 

Thanks to the Mighty Surgeon above, His counterpart below and 

St. Jude, we are home and in the hands of competent visiting nurses 

and cancer free! 

That’s it for the present. Now for the times you labored with me 

through the births of five of our seven grandchildren. [Matt and Katie 

pre-date our move here.] You were guests at all the Catholic Church 

rituals that followed and the five college graduations to boot. 

You met my mom (gone for 38 years) through mental pictures I 

drew of her funny, embarrassing and hurtful experiences. You met my 

four brothers and heard about the fun we had growing up in those 

good and simple times. 

You were with me in sickness and in death when I lost three of 

those younger brothers; a nephew and his young son in a private plane 

crash; BG’s brother and the suicide of my 36-year-old nephew. You 

mourned with me when three dear friends died within a year’s time. 

You met the klutz (me) who’d ridden in a motorized vehicle — 

ambulance — on anti-vehicular Mackinac Island; the person who 

broke the same wrist twice; the “psychoanalyst” who blames the stress 

of full-blown poison ivy for the worst case of shingles. She, who has 

emphasized the importance of shingles shots lest readers face the postherpedic 

neuralgia she’s had these 13 years later. 

You read an irate Lee Smith regarding the Anita Hill-Clarence 

Thomas hearings; Clinton’s $200 haircut; OJ’s acquittal; the sneaky 

felling of the Mighty Oak at the end of our road; the heart-breaking 

implosion of the J.L. Hudson building; the unfairness of choices for 

the Nobel Peace Prize. 

On a somber note, we said farewell to Jackie O. in 1994; J.P. 

McCarthy a year later and Ronald Reagan in 2004. I conjured up the 

shock of JFK’s assassination and the attack on Pearl Harbor; the horror 

of the tsunami and earthquakes in Charleston and Japan. 

You went on trips with us and our grandkids as they turned 

13…tagged along to Nova Scotia, San Antonio, Branson, Salt Lake 

City. You golfed with us at Callaway Gardens, Disney World, Torrey 

Pines, Fairfield Glade and dozens of other destinations. 

You heard us repeat our 50-year vows onboard the Delta Queen 

(now sadly beached). I invited you to envision the wonders of Milan, 

Verona, Venice and Bellagio and a dream-come-true: our day at the 

Masters in Augusta, Georgia. 

I sought your support for Lung Cancer Awareness when we learned 

our daughter had the dreaded disease…campaigned for passage of the 

library millage…supported the TCA and its programs…plugged local 

businesses…urged you to “buy American” and told you where. 

I shamelessly admitted to fiascos in the kitchen but passed on the 

new and successful stuff. 

We talked about the inanimate — Howdy Doody, Barbie, Beanie 

Babies; sang the praises of Will Rogers, Lee Iacocca, Sheriff Joe 

Arpaio and St. Anthony; laughed with Maxine and Dave Barry; paid 

homage to the Pilgrims. 

You urged me to continue my annual book column and I, in turn, 

continue to jot those I’ll recommend mid-summer. 

Most recently you walked up the aisle with us at Matt’s and 

Natalie’s weddings and will do so again at Katie’s in October. You’ve 

felt my enthusiasm over our fun times in Chicago now that we have 

complimentary lodging and transportation. 

Now, as I set the Garmin for future destinations, I expect you to 

pack your imagination and travel along with me to the sites I’ve set for 

2012.

MARGARET J. BURNOR 

Margaret J. Burnor, age 92, 

of Britton, passed away 

January 20, 2012. 

Margaret was born 

November 20, 1919 in Raisin 

Township, Mich., the daughter 

of Garland and Geraldine 

(Orr) Osburn. On August 16, 

1947 she married Edsel 

Burnor in Deerfield and he 

preceded her in death May 22, 

2009. She was a graduate of 

Tecumseh High School. Her 

passions were painting, 

sewing, flower gardening, 

traveling to Mackinaw City 

and Ft. Myers, Fla., and most 

of all, her family. 

Margaret is survived by her 

sons, Richard Burnor and 

Larry (Amy) Burnor; grandchildren, 

Jeffrey (Erika) 

Burnor and Sarah Burnor; 

great granddaughters, Isobelle 

and Quinn Alexandra Burnor; 

brothers, Bill, Joe, and Bob 

Osburn: sisters, Alice Lewis 

and Joyce Gentry and many 

nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her husband, 

she was preceded death by her 

parents; son, Johnny; brothers, 

Bruce and Larry Osburn and 

her sister Elizabeth Gould.

Ralph Adam Mohr, Jr. age, 

82 of Adrian passed away 

Sunday, January 22, 2012 in 

Bixby Hospital surrounded by 

his family. Ralph was born 

November 14, 1929 in Toledo, 

Ohio the son of Ralph Sr. and 

Mary (Cunningham) Mohr. On 

September 3, 1949 in 

Tecumseh he married Ardyth 

Cole and she survives. Ralph 

was a 1946 graduate of Onsted 

High School. He was a farmer 

and worked for the Budd 

Company in Clinton. Ralph’s 

life-long passion was farming, 

his family and spending time 

at their vacation home near 

Lake James in Angola Indiana. 

In addition to his wife, 

Ardyth, his is survived by 

three daughters; Linda 

(Michael) Brennan of Adrian, 

Debra (Robert) Henry of 

Adrian, and Kathryn Mohr 

(Mark Prielipp) of Britton; one 

sister; MaryLou Rinehart of 

Adrian; ten grandchildren and 

two great grandchildren. 

Ralph was preceded in death 

by his parents, two brothers, 

Lewis and Robert Mohr and 

his in-laws, Sherman and Ruth 

Cole.

DOUGLAS PAUL MAVES 

Douglas Paul Maves, age 

78, of Tecumseh passed away 

Monday, January 23, 2012 at 

his home surrounded by his 

family. 

Douglas was born August 

19, 1933 in Ferndale, 

Michigan the son of Paul and 

Arnetta (Stoscup) Maves. On 

September 10, 1955 he married 

Peggy Hintz in the Grace 

Lutheran Church, Tecumseh 

and she survives. Douglas was 

the co-owner of Paul’s MFG 

Homes and R.V. Sales. He was 

a member of Grace Lutheran 

Church of Tecumseh. A veteran 

of the U.S. Army, Douglas 

was a member and past 

Commander of the Tecumseh 

American Legion; he was also 

a member of the 40 & 8. 

Douglas and Peggy enjoyed 

traveling together; some of 

their favorite trips were to the 

Smokey Mountains, the Amish 

Country in Ohio, up north, 

Anguilla, Alaska and Africa. 

Douglas and Peggy enjoyed 

many years wintering in 

Florida. At first traveling the 

state in a motor home and later 

settling in two of their favorite 

places, Siesta Key and Naples. 

A lot of happy family times 

were also at their summer cottage 

at Deep Lake in the Irish 

Hills. Douglas loved hunting, 

fishing and was a University 

of Michigan fan. 

In addition to his wife, 

Peggy he is survived by one 

daughter, Lorriane (Larry) 

Howard of Tecumseh; two 

sons, Kirk Maves and 

Benjamin Maves both of 

Tecumseh; two brothers, 

Donald (Phyllis) Maves of 

Tecumseh and Kenneth (Janet) 

Maves of Neenah, Wisconsin; 

six grandchildren, Bryan, 

Ashley, Mihkey, Kristopher, 

Zachary and KayLee. Douglas 

was preceded in death by his 

parents.

$10,000 grant supporting Boys and Girls 

Club of Lenawee’s Project Club House 

ADRIAN — The Consumers Energy 

Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to 

support the Boys and Girls Club of 

Lenawee’s Project Club House capital campaign. 

The grant supports efforts by the club, 

in conjunction with Adrian Public Schools, 

to renovate space in the Adrian Middle 

School for youth activities. 

“We are thankful for the support from 

Consumers Energy Foundation. This grant 

supports the building of a new clubhouse 

enabling youth, especially those who need 

us most to gain hope and have a positive 

outlook on their lives,” said Dana Pink, 

executive director of Boys and Girls Club of 

Lenawee. 

“We are pleased to support youth development 

efforts by the Boys & Girls Club, 

and Adrian Public Schools, through this 

grant,” said David G. Mengebier, president 

of the Consumers Energy Foundation. “We 

commend this use of the school's available 

space and are encouraged by the significant 

increase in young people that will be 

served.”

Evolution in society means 

intolerance of deviant behavior

There are certain stories that happen in the 

world that transcend their usual spot in a newscast 

or move beyond the typical section in a newspaper. The Penn 

State University debacle is a perfect example of this phenomenon. 

The football program at Penn State jumped off the sports pages 

and landed on page one, gaining emotional responses not only 

from sports fans but from almost everyone with a pulse. 

Joe Paterno’s death over the weekend was an eerie chapter in 

the scandal’s timeline. There has been much discussion and division 

over Paterno’s responsibility and guilt by association in the 

scandal. Pundits, both sport and editorial, seem unsure of whether 

to pay tribute or continue the criticism of the long-time head 

coach. 

I feel sad for Joe Paterno. How awful to not use his power to 

stop Jerry Sandusky from the second Paterno knew of Sandusky’s 

alleged crimes. How pathetic to allow pride in a sports program 

and personal achievements to keep Paterno from doing the right 

thing. Saddest of all, I think when everything fell apart, the blinders 

fell off Paterno’s eyes and he saw everything — all the mismanagement 

by his staff and university officials, his lack of concern 

for those children, and how he forgot what was truly important. 

Because Paterno is not a bad man, I suspect guilt put his cancer 

into overdrive. 

So many people express shock at Paterno’s choices, but I was 

not surprised at his lack of vision. Like so many of the bishops in 

the Catholic Church, this 84-year-old man is from a generation 

that doesn’t understand sexual predators. So many men, although 

not all, of his generation think acknowledging deviant sexual 

behavior just isn’t appropriate because it brings shame not on the 

predator, but on a revered institution. There is a belief that justice 

should come from within the untouchable organization because the 

men in charge are wiser and have ultimate authority for the institution. 

This mindset is uniquely patriarchal, so it makes complete 

sense that it has occurred so spectacularly in a college football 

program and a patriarchal religious institution. 

But lest the rest of us bemoan the situation, we should be 

thankful both of these scandals broke, because 30, 40, or 50 years 

ago, it is unlikely any of us would have read about the abuse, and 

none of the predatory behavior would have been stopped. In our 

present era we now believe sexual abuse is something abominable 

and demanding immediate attention. It’s ugly and horrible for all 

of us to think about, but society will not allow victims to be 

brushed aside and predators to be ignored. Evolution in society 

demands justice even when the crimes shock and appall us. 

Penn State now has the chance to rebuild the university and 

football program with humility creating an environment of compassion 

and caring. The Catholic Church was wounded by sexual 

abuse, but the forced confrontation has created a greater understanding 

of good versus evil, and the purging of those in power 

who tolerated abuse was a benefit for the community of believers. 

I believe in redemption and justice. Justice will find Sandusky 

and all the others who tolerated the alleged abuse, and redemption 

will happen if those who abused and misused their authority ever 

realize the horrific mistakes they made and take responsibility for 

their actions. I do believe Joe Paterno died understanding his mistakes 

and comprehending the scope of the tragedy, and I also 

believe he was deserving of redemption. 

Now I wait with the rest of the world to see if Sandusky, Mike 

McQueary, Tim Curley, and Gary Schultz take responsibility for 

their mistakes, dropping their excuses and admitting their great 

wrongdoing. Acceptance of responsibility hasn’t really happened 

so far, and many of these men seemed surprised at the anger 

directed at them. I’m sure at some point the public will be told that 

none of the men had the power to stop anything, and that they 

were just doing what the university expected of them. This 

moment is when the evolution of society will be most apparent. 

“The university told us what to do” would have been an acceptable 

excuse in the 1950s, but now in 2012 we know it is not just unacceptable 

but, in point of fact, intolerable. 

We must not make these men into monsters, but hold them 

accountable as humans. Monsters cannot be responsible for their 

behavior, but humans have no excuse for monstrous conduct. 

This is a cautionary tale for all of us — we never know when 

someone we trust or admire may make a choice, which is horrific. 

If that happens, we must be ready to enforce the social mores of 

today, and not use the excuses of a society not yet evolved.

As a parent of a Tecumseh 

Tigershark swimmer, I would 

like to petition the residents of 

Tecumseh to rally together to 

keep the community pool operational. 

On Feb. 28, PLEASE 

vote to keep the pool open! 

My child became a 

Tecumseh Tigershark in the fall 

of 2010. She initially joined 

because she loves the water, 

and some of her school mates 

were on the team. Prior to joining 

the Tigersharks, she could 

only swim freestyle, and I wasn’t 

even sure she would make it 

across the length of the pool. 

After a very short time of being 

a part of the team, she has 

learned backstroke, breast 

stroke and the butterfly. She is 

also great at her starts off the 

block. Coming from a recreational 

summer time swimmer, 

to what she has become now 

has simply amazed me. Our 

children can only come away

from this pool, and the program, 

as better people. 

Regular swimming builds 

endurance, muscle strength and 

cardio-vascular fitness. 

Spending time in a group workout, 

whether water aerobics or a 

swim practice, is a great social 

outlet. Exchanging stories, challenging 

each other, and sharing 

in the hard work make swimming 

with others a rewarding 

experience. Our kids are developing 

life skills such as sportsmanship, 

time management, 

self discipline, goal setting, and 

an increased sense of self worth 

through their participation in 

the sport. Not to mention 

swimming exercises almost the 

entire body (heart, lungs, and 

muscles) with very little joint 

strain. It is great for overall 

general fitness. 

Swimming is a healthy 

activity that can be continued 

for a lifetime, and the health 

benefits that swimming offers 

for a lifetime are worth the 

effort it takes to get to the 

swimming pool. Please, help 

keep our kids healthy physically 

and mentally by keeping the 

pool open.

All of my children have participated 

in swim lessons at 

Tecumseh Community Pool. It 

wasn’t until two years ago that 

I realized what an important 

part of our lives the pool would 

become. My son was then in 

5th grade and had tried many 

different sports, but none of 

them seemed to suit him just 

right. That year in gym class 

they had two weeks of swimming. 

Sarah Eubanks mentioned 

to him he should join 

Tigersharks swim club. 

Without a pool director who 

encourages kids to participate 

in pool activities I would have 

never known how much the 

water would mean to my kids. 

Although he only did one season 

of Tigersharks swimming 

he has participated in every session 

of dive team since. 

Because of that my daughter 

has also joined the Tigersharks 

dive team. 

Both my children have tried 

many sports only to decide that 

it wasn’t their passion until diving. 

If the Public recreation and 

Playgrounds millage does not 

pass there will be many kids 

like mine who will not have a 

place to nourish the sport that 

they love. 

I understand that in this 

economy we are all struggling 

and the thought of adding yet 

another cost to our already 

mounting bills isn’t what most 

want to do, but I encourage you 

to consider the youth of 

Tecumseh when you go to the 

polls on Feb 28th and please 

vote yes. 

The millage will only equal 

approximately $18 annually for 

the average Tecumseh household. 

You only have to skip 

three coffees a year!

Frederick said she made 

some interesting observations in 

her Toledo-area classes. 

“It would usually start out 

with one parent bringing the 

child, and it could be a mom or 

it could be a dad,” said 

Frederick. “As we continued, 

quite often both parents would 

come if they could, because we 

promote activities that can be 

done at home, and the parents 

would be doing them with their 

children. Another thing that 

happened was the parents might 

have to miss a class, but the 

babies usually didn’t. They 

would then come with a grandma 

or grandpa, or even in one 

case, both, with a young uncle 

who did the activities by holding 

his young niece. That was 

very satisfying for me.” 

Frederick said the activities 

can also be very calming, and 

in one case, a registered nurse 

who worked in a birthing center 

brought her child to the class. 

“After that, she was telling 

parents of fussy babies about 

the techniques, because they 

calmed the baby,” Frederick 

said. At the beginning, she

back through development from 

birth to one year. For instance, 

the first component, the breath, 

symbolizes the baby’s first 

breath, and emphasizes breath 

control and oxygenation. 

Participants then work through 

a range of symbolic activities 

under Frederick’s guidance. She 

said sometimes society tends to 

rush children, getting them vertical 

as soon as possible from 

the chairs they put them in to 

encouraging early walking. 

“We may sometimes limit 

their ability to pass through the 

various developmental stages at 

their own pace,” Frederick said. 

She thinks the number one 

draw to the class is that it will 

guide parents on how to interact 

with their child through the 

movement language. “They will 

also utilize a variety of instruments 

to experience rhythms 

together. One of the things I’ve 

noticed is how the camaraderie 

between parent and child just 

explodes through this process. 

It’s very intuitive, and I think 

the parents enjoy it as much as 

the babies.” 

Frederick said the concept is 

big in New York City and on 

the West Coast, but kind of new 

to the Midwest. She was the 

only one from Ohio at the 

Seattle training. 

“This is cutting edge,” said 

Frederick. “I think it takes a 

forward thinking community to 

try it and it may take some time 

to embrace it, but the research 

has shown some remarkable 

things relating to development.” 

The Babies in Motion class 

will take place on Tuesdays 

from 11 a.m. to noon, to 

include Feb. 7, Feb. 14, Feb. 

21, and Feb. 28. Toddlers in 

Motion will meet on Tuesdays 

from 10-11 a.m. on the same 

dates. A second session of 

classes will take place on four 

Tuesdays in March to include 

March 6, 13, 20, 27. The program 

is being sponsored by the 

Elizabeth Ruthruff Wilson

Hospice of Lenawee to present 

community open house Feb. 10 

n New Hospice Home on Wolf Creek Highway featured at event 

Hospice of Lenawee will 

hold a Community Open House 

for its new Hospice Home on 

Friday, Feb. 10. The new facility 

is located at 1903 Wolf Creek 

Highway, and the open house 

will take place there from 2-7 

p.m. 

Guests will have an opportunity 

to meet Lenawee Hospice 

Home staff and take tours of the 

Hospice Home, Administrative, 

Bereavement and Home Care 

Staff building. Hospice has 

been conducting a fundraising 

campaign to meet a $5 million 

goal for constructing the new 

facility. 

The event is sponsored by 

United Bank and Trust. Light 

refreshments will be served. 

It is estimated that approximately 

144 patients per year 

would be served by the hospice 

residence, with Lenawee’s 

more than 100,000 people having 

the option of 24-hour care 

within close proximity. 

Hospice of Lenawee, a nonprofit 

community based 

Hospice, was founded in 1981. 

The mission is to provide compassionate, 

patient and family 

centered care to the people of 

the community during and after 

the last season of life. Hospice 

of Lenawee offers, as a community 

service and at no charge, its 

expertise in trauma and loss 

support for youth, and bereavement 

and grief support for children 

and adults alike.

the same retail complex as 

Jerry’s Market and a number of

totally transformed from the 

layout it had under its last tenant. 

The many large windows 

give the office an airy feeling 

and gave the attendees at the 

ribbon-cutting a panoramic

very park-like Herrick Park

Murdock said that she likes 

the openness of the newly refurbished

office. “We had a great turn-out 

for the ribbon-cutting,” she 

said. “A lot of our old friends 

were here and some new faces 

that we were happy to see. This 

is a great place to have an 

office, and the renovation has 

totally changed the place from 

what it was.” 

Zawacki and his family have 

been Tecumseh residents for 25 

years. Before his employment 

with Edward Jones, he was 

treasury manager for Tecumseh 

Products. He received his 

degree from Eastern Michigan 

University and began his business 

career as a certified public 

accountant before joining 

Tecumseh Products, which 

moved its headquarters from 

Tecumseh several years ago. 

Zawacki’s wife, Carole, is a 

nurse at Allegiance Hospital in 

Jackson, formerly Foote 

Hospital, and the couple have a 

daughter, Alexandra, who is a 

student at Tecumseh High 

School. 

He said he is looking forward 

to helping new customers 

with their financial plans for the 

future with face-to-face advice

Public invited to ‘Owl at the Moon’ 

On Monday, Jan. 30, a few 

birders are gathering at Indian 

Crossings Park in Tecumseh 

to walk the trails to call in a 

few owls. This is a free 

unsponsored event. The agenda 

is as follows…. 

1. Meet and greet: 

Participants meet in the parking 

lot behind the Tecumseh 

Community Center at 6 p.m. 

2. The walk: The plan is to 

hike the trails within the park 

at night, starting at 6:15 p.m. 

Owl calls will be played (via 

an iPod) at certain spots along 

the trails to try to draw in 

Screech Owls, Barred Owls 

and Great Horned Owls. 

Dress for the weather and 

wear a sturdy pair of boots as 

the trails may be muddy or 

icy. The walk will be approximately 

1-2 miles. Flash photography 

is not recommended 

as the hope is to enjoy the 

owls without disrupting their 

vision. Flashlights can be 

used if the lens is covered 

with red cellophane. 

3. Social hour: Everyone is 

invited to meet at Basil Boys 

restaurant afterwards. 

“As birders we understand 

that calling in owls is not 

something that should be 

done very often as it may confuse 

them,” said guide Gregg 

Perez. “Therefore, we only 

intend to offer this event once 

or twice a year. We hope it 

provides an educational 

opportunity for children and 

others who may have never 

seen or heard an owl before.”

Anti-smoking bans supported by public 

Ann Arbor — Citizens aren’t 

just blowing smoke when it 

comes to anti-tobacco legislation 

— and they tend to copy 

what neighboring states do, 

new research shows. 

In adopting anti-smoking 

bans, public opinion is much 

more important than originally 

thought, said University of 

Michigan School of Public 

Health researcher and lead 

study author Julianna 

Pacheco. The closer a person 

lives to a state that has enacted 

smoking bans the likelier it 

is for that person to support 

smoking bans. Eventually, 

politicians respond by enacting 

bans in those home states. 

“Democratic responsiveness 

is alive and well at the 

state level,” said Pacheco, 

who is also a Robert Wood 

Johnson Foundation health 

and Society Scholar. 

“We’ve always thought that 

public opinion was important 

for state policy making, but 

this is the first paper to empirically 

test the causal relationship 

between opinion and policy 

over time,” Pacheco said. 

“Furthermore, this paper suggests 

that public opinion is the 

driving force behind why policies 

often spread across neighboring 

states.” 

The study looks at legislation 

through the lens of the 

social contagion theory. The 

first stage in social contagion 

occurs as individuals become 

aware of policies adopted in 

neighboring states. The second 

stage occurs as state officials 

respond to changing 

opinion on those neighboring 

policies in the home state. 

This seems intuitive, but hasn’t 

been studied before, she 

said. 

“There are methodological 

challenges to measuring state 

public opinion,” Pacheco said. 

“We have not had very good 

measures of state opinion that 

vary over time, which are 

needed to study the social 

contagion model.” 

The social contagion model 

and the role of public opinion 

can be applied to other public 

policy areas as well, Pacheco 

said. 

“Anti-smoking policies are 

unique in that these policies 

are easy for people to understand 

and directly experience, 

but that doesn’t mean that the 

social contagion model cannot 

be applied to other issues,” 

Pacheco said. 

The paper, “The Social 

Contagion Model: Exploring 

the Role of Public Opinion in 

the Diffusion of Anti- 

Smoking Legislation across 

the American States” will 

appear in The Journal of 

Politics. 

EMU enhances fishery conservation 

EAST LANSING — In a 

major contribution to fishery 

conservation, Michigan State 

University is establishing an 

endowed scholar program to 

ensure healthy environments 

for fish and aquatic resources. 

The Stanislaus F. Snieszko 

Endowed Scholar Program in 

Aquatic Animal Medicine, 

named for a world-renowned 

fish health scientist, will be 

catalyst to bridge science 

with policy and provide leadership 

to public and private 

organizations to conserve the 

nation’s wildlife, aquatic animals 

and related natural 

resources. 

This program will be 

focused in MSU 

AgBioResearch. Mohamed 

Faisal was chosen to direct 

this program and be the first 

S.F. Snieszko Scholar. He is a 

professor of pathobiology in 

MSU’s College of Veterinary 

Medicine and a professor of 

fisheries and wildlife in 

MSU’s College of 

Agriculture and Natural 

Resources. Faisal will work 

in tandem with MSU’s Center 

for Systems Integration and 

Sustainability. 

This program will support 

MSU graduate and undergraduate 

students, faculty, 

natural resource managers, 

policy makers and allied constituents 

to develop knowledge, 

tools and methods 

required to understand and 

better manage the health of 

aquatic resources.

State ‘strong and growing’ notes Stabenow in State of Michigan Ag address 

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow is 

Chairwoman of the U.S. Senate Committee on 

Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. In a January 

2012 report, Stabenow said she has “had the 

unique opportunity of showcasing Michigan 

agriculture at the national level, and partnering 

with farmers and businesses across the state in 

strengthening this important part of our economy,” 

as she has served on the committee. She 

recently presented a “State of Michigan 

Agriculture” address to highlight the state’s 

strengths in agriculture, forestry and food systems 

and the opportunities to create new jobs in 

related fields. Following are some excerpts from 

that address. 

“I am pleased to report that the State of 

Michigan Agriculture is strong and growing. We 

know that agriculture already accounts for one 

out of every four jobs in Michigan and $71.3 billion 

every year for our economy. 

“…As Chair, I have the unique opportunity to 

showcase the strength of Michigan agriculture at 

the national level. And I am honored to partner 

with all of you as farmers and agri-businesses 

across the state to leverage those strengths and 

seize new opportunities for growth and prosperity. 

Michigan agriculture is strong and growing, 

not only because of our incredible growers and 

producers, but because of companies like yours 

that provide services and products to farmers, in 

crop protection, crop fertility, grain handlers, 

farm credit, equipment manufacturing — the list 

goes on and on and on. And it’s because of all of 

you that agriculture contributes one in four jobs 

in Michigan, and that’s something I keep in mind 

every day…” 

“…Unfortunately, while you have been creating 

jobs and doing good things here in Michigan, 

folks back in Washington have been proposing 

devastating cuts that would jeopardize much of 

what you are doing. In February, we got a taste 

of how difficult it was going to be to pass a Farm 

Bill when the House 

to do that. A note on that 

Republicans proposed 

$23 billion number: 

their budget, calling for a 

Agriculture represents 

devastating $30 billion in 

cuts to commodities and 

crop insurance, $18 billion 

in cuts to conservation, 

and $127 billion in 

cuts to nutrition. These 

cuts passed the House 

about 2 percent of the 

total spending of the federal 

government and $23 

billion is about 2 percent 

of the $1.2 trillion that 

the Super Committee was 

supposed to cut. So we 

and almost every 

felt that was a responsible 

Republican in the Senate 

supported them…” 

“…Then in August, 

Congress passed legislation 

creating a committee, 

that most people call 

the “Super Committee,” 

to find $1.2 trillion in 

deficit reduction. And in 

that law, they asked each 

number… 

“…While I’m disappointed 

that the Super 

Committee failed in its 

task, I am proud that the 

Agriculture Committees 

succeeded in our task of 

coming together, in a 

bipartisan way, to do our 

fair share. If every other 

Committee to submit 

Committee had done 

recommendations to 

what we did in 

achieve deficit savings 

from programs in their 

Agriculture, our budget 

situation would be in a 

jurisdiction.

“…I called my counterpart 

today. So now, our next 

in the House of Representatives, step is to continue the process we started last 

Chairman Frank Lucas, and we sat down with 

the ranking members from both of our committees 

— the top Democrat to the House and the 

top Republican in the Senate. And the four of us 

decided that, rather than having others decide 

what should happen regarding agriculture policy, 

we ought to be proposing deficit reduction cuts 

that make sense for agriculture. 

“…And so we went back to work. And it certainly 

wasn’t easy, but at the end, we developed 

detailed, bipartisan, bicameral recommendations 

that would cut $23 billion from the deficit with 

fundamental and fair reforms that recognize and 

build upon the success of American agriculture. 

And I’m proud that we were the only committee 

year on the Farm Bill. 

“…So as we look at the next Farm Bill, we 

need effective risk management tools for farmers 

that are simple and easy to use. In my visits 

around Michigan, and in our field hearing here 

and at the one we did in Kansas, we heard over 

and over again that crop insurance is the foundation 

of the farm safety net. It’s absolutely the 

most important risk management tool for farmers. 

So as we worked on the Super Committee 

recommendations, we made crop insurance the 

centerpiece of the risk management system. We 

need to protect crop insurance from cuts, 

strengthen the program and make it more effective, 

and expand crop insurance so producers 

from all regions and all crops can get adequate 

protection…” 

“…Another area where we found agreement, 

and I think, made great progress building a foundation 

for the Farm Bill was in conservation. 

What we’ve seen in the past is this: anytime 

someone has had a new idea for conservation, we 

just added another program. This time, we said, 

enough of that. Again, we’re focused on principles, 

not programs. So we looked at all the functions 

that conservation programs are providing. 

We looked at all the places where there was 

duplication, or programs working at cross-purposes, 

or where the programs were too complicated. 

And then we looked at the principle needs 

farmers have, and the tools they need, and we 

streamlined and consolidated programs to fit 

their needs. 

And I’m very happy to say that we were able 

to consolidate 23 conservation programs down to 

13 and we created 5 areas of focus for conservation 

— while continuing and building on the 

strength of what those programs were doing. For 

the first time, we did what everybody always 

talks about. We reduced complexity, cut paperwork, 

and increased efficiency and flexibility in 

these critical conservation programs…” 

“…We have a lot of work to do in the next 

few months. And it’s certainly not going to be 

easy — not when the House has already voted to 

cut $187 billion from Farm Bill programs. But I 

hope that our experiences last year — when 

Democrats and Republicans from the House and 

Senate Agriculture Committees were the only 

ones working together in a bipartisan way — 

will help us get the Farm Bill done. That’s 

absolutely what we need to do again to pass the 

2012 Farm Bill. 

Will Rogers once said, “The farmer has to be 

an optimist or he wouldn’t still be a farmer.” I 

think we have a lot to be optimistic about in 

Michigan agriculture, and that’s a result of the 

great work that all of you are doing.

Marvin Farms was named 

Conservation Farmer of the 

Year for 2011, and its 

owner/operators were recognized 

at the Lenawee 

Conservation District’s 65th 

annual meeting on Jan. 12. 

Board member Jim Ruesink 

presented the award. 

The Marvin family includes 

Jim and wife Joy, son Jimmy 

and wife, Maria, and their children. 

This is the third generation 

dairy farm 

which started 

with Jim’s 

father. 

Jimmy graduated 

from 

Michigan State 

University with 

a B.S. in Animal 

Science and 

upgraded the 

dairy with a new 

dairy barn in 2005. This grew 

the dairy to 200 milk cows with 

250 young stock and a few 

steers mixed in. The new barn 

has new energy conservation 

practices built into it featuring 

a plate cooler system which 

cools milk from 102 to 68 

degrees. The water is then 

recycled for the cows to use for 

drinking. The milk cooler also 

produces Freon that is used to 

heat and make hot water. There 

are variable rate electric motors 

which use up to 50 percent less 

electricity than previously 

used. 

Marvin Farms currently 

farms approximately 450 acres 

of corn, 170 acres of soybeans, 

120 acres of wheat, and 180 

acres of alfalfa, with 20 acres 

of pasture.

Conservation District for over 

40 years, Marvin Farms has

erosion control structures, sediment 

and water control structures, 

subsurface drainage, 

structures for water control, 

two waste storage facilities, 

waste treatment filter strip, 

pumping plants, composting 

facility, nutrient management, 

waste utilization, irrigation 

water management, Ag 

Chemical and fertilizer containment.

Everyone knew Adrian was 

out to get its rival Tecumseh in 

the two school’s annual varsity 

boys basketball game with 

their former coach Marc 

Comstock taking over the 

Indians’ program this year. 

What no one expected was 

how bad the Maples would 

attack and flog their former 

leader and his new band of 

Indians. 

Adrian beat Tecumseh by a 

whopping 32 points, winning 

the Southeastern Conference 

(SEC) contest 59-27. 

“You know, it’s a rivalry 

game so you’ve got to win that 

one,” said Adrian’s new coach 

Bart Bartels. “Losing is not an 

option.” 

The Maples snapped a 

three-game losing streak with 

the victory and Bartels was 

extremely happy with what he 

saw in his players. 

The only lead the Indians 

held was 3-0 in the opening 

minutes of the game. “We 

played real well at both ends of 

the floor,” said Bartels. “We 

rebounded offensively very 

well and shared the ball. I was 

very pleased with the whole 32 

minutes.” 

Bartels said they stuck to his 

playbook for the game and didn’t 

change things specifically 

for the Indians. 

“We felt we could pressure 

their guards so we gave them 

different looks,” said Bartels. 

“We changed it up to see how 

well they could handle it and it 

got us going offensively.” 

Adrian cruised to a 13-5 

first quarter lead and finished 

Two overtime losses dropped 

Clinton’s varsity boys basketball 

record to 7-3 overall and put the 

Redskins in a three-way tie for 

first place in the Tri-County 

Conference. 

“Tuesday’s non-league loss to 

a solid Michigan Center team was 

one we could take and learn from, 

but the Whiteford loss really 

stings,” said Clinton coach Mike 

Ruhl. 

Clinton trailed Michigan 

Center late in the game but rallied 

to force overtime. At Whiteford 

the Redskins held the lead late in 

the game but let it slip away. 

“We still control whether we 

accomplish our team goals, but it 

will just be a little tougher now,” 

Clinton’s varsity girls basketball 

team lost 47-46, at 

Whiteford on Friday, Jan. 20.

times and are having a hard 

time scoring points,” said 

Comstock of the Indians’ disappointing

Tecumseh scored just two 

points the entire third quarter. 

“We can’t ever get any 

momentum or runs or get 

excited when we don’t score 

two baskets in a row. It’s hard 

to get excited and get some 

energy when we sputter around 

and turn the ball over like we 

did and shoot the ball poorly 

like we did.” 

The Indians fell to 2-7 overall 

and 0-4 in the SEC with the 

loss. Tecumseh had a week to 

prepare for it’s following SEC 

contest at Dexter on Friday, 

Jan. 27. 

Comstock said things have 

got to change for the Indians. 

“We’re going to find a way 

to turn things up because we’re 

not going to settle for the effort 

and lack of fight tonight,” said 

Comstock. “That’s my disappointment. 

We didn’t show 

fight. We didn’t show effort 

and you can’t win in this 

league like that. The margin for 

competing and having a chance 

to win is slim as it is. We certainly 

can’t play like we played 

tonight and expect to win in 

this league.”

and hauled down four 

rebounds to lead the Indians. 

Tecumseh’s Casey Hunt added 

six points while teammate Max 

Patterson had three rebounds

Adrian 28-27 for 

Tecumseh’s first season victory, 

but without her teammates carrying 

the same never give up 

attitude, they wouldn’t even 

have come close. 

“Our girls deserved that 

win,” said Tecumseh coach 

Jamie Mossburg. “I give credit 

to all 11 players for never giving 

up.” 

The final four minutes of the 

game brought a rollercoaster 

full of emotions for both teams 

as the Indians came from 

behind (18-16) to take a 23-20 

lead on two-point lay-up by 

Galloway.

with 52.8 seconds remaining. 

Her first shot bounced off the 

rim and into the net to tie the 

contest 24-24 and her second 

hit nothing but net to again give 

the Indians a one point, 25-24 

lead. 

On Adrian’s ensuing offensive

within one point (27-26). When 

her second attempt bounced off 

the rim of the net Galloway 

leapt over the top of Adrian’s 

Kimberly Buie and won the 

game with a putback. On 

Adrian’s ensuing possession the 

ball was inbound to no avail as 

the final buzzer sounded. 

“We’ve worked on last second 

shots in practice a lot,” said 

Galloway. “And we’ve been in 

this situation so many times 

before that I wasn’t nervous at 

all. It just came natural.” 

Before the game the Indians 

could be heard chanting, 

“defense, defense, defense,” in 

the locker room. Galloway said,

The Patriots built a 10- 

point lead that was held for a 

majority of the game. 

“Defense is what starts our 

offense. When we have a good

Tecumseh’s determination 

wasn’t as apparent in the opening 

quarter as Adrian took a 12- 

5 lead in the first eight minutes 

of play. The Indians’ morale 

didn’t waver in the second quarter, 

limiting Adrian to just two 

points, but they only scored 

three points to finish the first 

half down 14-8. 

The Indians outscored 

Adrian 8-4 in the third quarter 

and 12-9 in the fourth. 

“I thought our intensity was 

better than theirs the entire second 

half,” said Mossburg. “It 

was an awesome game.” 

Galloway led the Indians 

with nine points, four rebounds 

and two steals. Kayla Kormos 

added five points while Wright 

finished with four points and 

three boards. 

Megan Marko chipped in 

three points. Silvernail and 

Shaffer added three points, 

three rebounds and two steals 

each. Nicole Lipnichan had

for Tecumseh. 

In its previous game at 

Lincoln on Tuesday, Jan. 17, the 

Indians lost 53-49 in overtime. 

The teams were tied 15 all 

after the opening quarter but the 

Indians were outscored in the 

second quarter to finish the first 

half down 32-24. 

Tecumseh’s defense stiffened 

up and limited the 

Railsplitters to only two points 

in the third quarter to take a 35- 

34 lead into the final stanza. 

The Indians added 12 points in 

the fourth quarter while Lincoln 

tagged on 13 to send the contest 

into overtime. 

In overtime, Lincoln 

outscored Tecumseh 6-2 to 

secure the Southeastern 

Conference victory. 

Wright led the Tribe with 17 

points while Kormos added 12

Jan. 23, during its TGA 

(Tecumseh Gymnastics 

Academy) appreciation night. 

Sophomore Sarah Kelly led 

the Indians to the win with a 

first place finish in the allaround 

with 30.175 points.

“It’s exciting to get our first 

dual meet win of the season,”

Poston. “And our team total is 

getting close to qualifying for 

regionals.” 

The Indians finished just 4.3 

points away from qualifying 

for regional competition as a 

team but posted several individual 

regional scores against 

Jackson. 

Kelly, Travis, Kendra King, 

and Landstrom all hit regional 

qualifying scores for vault. 

On bars, both Kelly and 

Wendt secured a spot at regionals 

while Kelly and Travis also 

posted regional qualifying 

scores on beam. 

Travis was the Indians’ lone 

regional qualifier on floor 

against Jackson. 

To date, Tecumseh has five 

girls qualified to represent the 

Indians at the Regional 

Tournament in Canton on 

Saturday, March 3. 

During the dual meet 

against Jackson the Indians 

highlighted the Tecumseh 

Gymnastics Academy with a 

choreographed performance 

routine that was designed and 

taught by the varsity and JV 

girls. 

“We started the community 

program, the Tecumseh 

Gymnastics Academy, and we 

now have 122 kids come 

through the gym a week,” said 

Poston. “The performance is 

our middle school group. Every 

one of them are a Tecumseh 

Middle School student that 

comes to the gym one day a 

week, and some of those girls 

are elite gymnasts who practice 

three days a week. There are a 

lot of kids going through the 

program right now.”

‘Tecumseh does such a good job’ of marketing 

says owner of newly opened Dip Stix and Stuff 



Susan Serafin has had her 

eye on Tecumseh for 

eight years, since her 

sister, Michelle Cherne made 

the community home. 

“I was living in Indianapolis, 

and the first time I visited my 

sister in Tecumseh, I noticed 

people were out walking their 

dogs and riding bicycles,” 

Serafin said. “The next time I 

visited, there was an ice festival 

— there was always something 

going on.” 

Serafin recently experienced a 

life change event that found her 

thinking about Tecumseh and 

living nearer to her sister, and 

six months ago, she moved here. 

She and Cherne had been operating 

a gourmet food business, 

primarily featuring dip and 

cheesecake mixes, as a hobby, a 

way to make a little extra 

money, and a way to spend “sister 

time” together. 

They’ve now formed Dip Stix 

and Stuff, which has retail sp ace 

at 116 S. Evans St. in the Grey 

Fox Floral building. Browsers 

may view colorful gift baskets 

alongside gourmet food items 

such as packages of dipping 

spices that can be added to olive 

oil and a line of preserves from 

The Great San Saba River Pecan 

Company. A peach, pecan and 

amaretto variety has been and 

remains their best seller. 

“You just pour it over some 

cream cheese and dip a cracker, 

like a Triscuit, in it,” said 

Serafin. There is also the line of 

Sonia Lee dip mixes in several 

varieties that they started with. 

“What we’re trying to do now 

that we’re based here in 

Michigan is to promote 

Michigan Made products,” said 

Serafin. Many of the items will 

sell separately, and some will be 

tucked into various gift baskets. 

She has been working locally 

with Tecumseh businessman 

Tony Menyhart, who has created 

Easy Artisan bread mixes, for 

instance. 

“Tony’s bread always goes 

into our Italian Dinner-themed 

gift basket,” she said. 

Dip Stix and Stuff also offers 

marketing services, since promotional 

marketing was 

Serafin’s primary line of business 

when she worked in 

Indiana. “It ties in with our gift 

basket marketing, because if a 

company has personalized items 

that they want to get into their 

clients’ hands, we can pla ce 

them in a nice gift basket with 

other items,” she said. 

Gift baskets include such 

themes as butterflies, gardening, 

baby shower (with rubber ducks 

inside), and holidays, such as 

Valentine and chocolate themed 

baskets currently on display. 

“Basically we need to know 

three things when someone is 

interested in a basket,” said 

Serafin. “What is the theme or 

occasion Is there a color 

scheme the customer would 

li ke And what is the price 

point” Gourmet food items in 

the shop run from $4, and gift 

baskets can be prepared for as 

little as $10, on up. Serafin said 

many of the baskets on display 

retail from $12-$50. One display 

contains hostess gifts consisting 

of packaged items such 

as a colorful oven mitt, dish 

towels, a spatula and some gourmet 

food items. 

Serafin said she primarily 

handles sales and the bookkeeping, 

while Cherne, a full time 

physical therapist, is “Miss 

Creativity” with the baskets. 

“Michelle is so creative and 

she goes into such detail arranging 

what’s inside,” said Serafin. 

“That’s what we’ve come to be 

known for, how pretty our baskets 

are.” They hope to one day 

be able to offer shipping services, 

however Serafin said that 

might compromise the attractiveness 

of the packages 

because they couldn’t be as 

detailed and would have to 

focus more on how it’s packed 

to arrive intact. 

The business owners also 

have approached various medical 

centers and other businesses 

with their services, and they 

conduct tastings of some of their 

wares. 

“It’s amazing how many people 

know about Tecumseh or 

have visited,” said Serafin. She 

said she was at a medical center 

in Detroit and people came up to 

her telling her they knew where 

Tecumseh was, or had family 

members who lived in surrounding 

communities. “What we 

need to do is get people walking 

around the town and into shops 

like this,” Serafin said. 

“Tecumseh is a cool town, and 

whatever we can do to increase 

foot traffic will benefit all the 

businesses. We’ve got to do 

whatever we can to help each 

other out, especially in this 

economy.” 

Serafin said during previous 

visits, she would collect 

brochures and promotional 

printings and Homefront 

Magazine and take them to city 

council meetings and other 

places in Indiana and point to 

them as models of what communities 

should be doing to market 

themselves. 

“Tecumseh does such a good 

job with that,” she said. “I’m 

helping out here by taking flyers 

with me when I go out and do 

marketing and taking some to 

the visitor centers.”

PURCHASE AGREEMENT 

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that City of Tecumseh, County of Lenawee, 

State of Michigan (the “City”), will conduct a public hearing at 7:35 

p.m., on Monday, the 20th day of February, 2012, in the City Hall 

located at 309 East Chicago Boulevard, Tecumseh, Michigan, regarding 

the City entering into an installment purchase agreement (the 

“Agreement”). The proceeds of the Agreement will be used for the 

purpose of acquiring a community center building in the City. The 

community center will be located at John W. Smith Park, 804 N. 

Evans, Tecumseh, Michigan and will be approximately 20,000 square 

feet. The maximum principal amount of the agreement will be Two 

Million Dollars ($2,000,000). The debt service payments under the 

Agreement will be paid by the Lenawee Community Foundation, a 

Michigan non-profit corporation. The hearing shall provide the fullest 

opportunity for expression of opinion, for argument on the merits and 

for introduction of documentary evidence pertinent to the proposed 

Agreement. 

THIS NOTICE is given pursuant to the requirements of Section 

147(f) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended. Additional 

information is available for inspection at the City of Tecumseh City 

Hall, 309 East Chicago Boulevard, Tecumseh, Michigan 49286. 

All interested citizens are encouraged, and will be offered an 

opportunity, to address the City at said public hearing concerning the

For the dogs: team performs open-heart canine surgeries 

Plagued with a defective 

heart valve that caused fluid 

accumulation in his lungs, Leo 

was in need of serious medical 

help. His loved ones opted for 

open-heart surgery. And after a 

successful operation, Leo is 

recovering nicely and leading a 

full life: chasing balls, chewing 

toys and barking at friends. 

Leo, a nearly 2-year-old 

Australian Shepherd from Ann 

Arbor, was the first dog to 

undergo open-heart surgery last 

fall at Michigan State 

University’s Veterinary 

Teaching Hospital Since then, 

Augusta Pelosi, a cardiac surgeon 

with the College of veterinary 

Medicine, has led a team 

of more than 20 veterinary and 

human health experts in performing 

two more successful 

open-heart canine surgeries. 

She is one of the few veterinary 

cardiac surgeons in the 

world who performs the rare 

surgery on companion animals. 

“Our service provides an 

alternative that can save lives,” 

said Pelosi, who joined the college’s 

Department of Small 

Animal Clinical Sciences in 

2008 after previously completing 

residencies in surgery and 

cardiology at MSU with pioneer 

veterinary surgeon George 

Eyster. “Medications can be 

used to treat a variety of cardiac 

conditions, but sometimes they 

can only do so much and come 

with side effects. The only way 

to fully correct many cardiac 

defects is to target the problem 

itself with open-heart surgery.” 

After several years of training 

and research, Pelosi now 

leads about 20 veterinary professionals 

— specializing in 

critical care to cardiology to 

anesthesia — as part of the 

Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s 

open-heart team. Pelosi also 

partners with human health professionals 

from the University

The result: A world-class 

team of experts performing surgeries 

for dogs to correct congenital 

and acquired diseases 

ranging from deformed valves 

in the heart to the abnormal narrowing 

of vessels. 

In Leo’s case, he came to 

MSU for correction of a dysplastic 

mitral valve, a condition 

where a valve in his heart did 

not form properly during development 

and resulted in improper 

closure and fluid congestion 

of the lungs. Despite good 

response to medication, Leo’s 

condition progressed and would 

have shortened his life 

expectancy. Bari Olivier, an 

MSU cardiology section chief, 

recommended surgery to correct 

Leo’s condition. 

During surgery, a mitral 

valve ring was placed and 

secured in Leo’s heart to provide 

support to the valve, thus 

eliminating blood from flowing 

back into the atrium. After surgery, 

Leo was assigned to the 

critical care group of the openheart 

team led by Amy 

Koenigshof. Leo was assisted 

by a mechanical ventilator for a 

night; one week later, he 

returned home and continues to 

do well. His owners report he is 

now eating normally and taking 

short walks outside. 

While the surgeries are of 

course risky, many owners are 

willing to provide the best services 

available for their pets. 

After surgery, dogs with cardiac 

defects often fully recover and 

go on to enjoy a normal life, 

Pelosi said. 

“There is a perception that 

heart surgery does not work for 

animals,” she said. “In human 

cardiac surgeries, this perception 

also existed many years 

ago. We have the need, we have 

the skills and we have the ability 

to do it successfully. While 

surgery is not an alternative to 

medical treatment or interventional 

procedures, it is an option 

that should be offered to our 

patients when it is the superior 

treatment option or other 

options have failed.”

MSU researchers identify path 

to treat Parkinson’s at inception 

Imagine if doctors could 

spot Parkinson’s disease at its 

inception and treat the protein 

that triggers it before the disease 

can sicken the patient. 

A team of researchers led 

by Basir Ahmad, a postdoctoral 

researcher at Michigan 

State University, has demonstrated 

that slow-wriggling 

alpha-synuclein proteins are 

the cause of aggregation, or 

clumping together, which is 

the first step of Parkinson’s. 

The results are published in 

the current issue of the 

Proceedings of the National 

Academy of Sciences. 

Proteins, which are chain 

molecules composed of amino 

acids, do most of the work in 

cells. While scientists understand 

how proteins are structured, 

they do not yet know 

how they are built — a 

process known as folding 

When errors happen in folding, 

proteins clump together, 

form plaques such as those 

found in Parkinson’s disease, 

Alzheimer’s and Lou Gehrig’s 

disease, and cause cells to 

degenerate. 

Lisa Lapidus, MSU associate 

professor of physics and 

astronomy and co-author of 

the paper, has dedicated her 

lab to researching folding. 

Using lasers to investigate the 

protein alpha-synuclein, the 

scientists correlated the speed 

at which the protein 

rearranges with its tendency to 

clump. A slower speed places 

the protein in a “dangerous 

regime,” a pace that allows it 

to develop sticky patches, 

aggregate and cause cellular 

damage, Lapidus said. 

“There are many, many 

steps that take place in aggregation, 

but we’ve identified 

the first step,” she said. 

“Finding a method to fight the 

disease at its first stage, rather 

than somewhere further down 

the road, can hopefully 

increase the success rate in 

which the disease is treated.” 

The identification of this 

critical first step already has 

the researchers pursuing new 

ways to attack the disease. 

Lapidus is currently testing a 

number of naturally occurring 

compounds, such as curcumin, 

ECGC and resveratrol, 

which could push the rearranging 

protein out of the danger 

zone. 

“We are now looking for 

molecules that can alter the 

protein when it first begins to 

‘misfold,’ which could eventually 

lead to the development 

of a drug that could prevent 

aggregation before it happens,” 

she said.
