Nikkei Concerns
President’s
Message
By Carol Suehiro,
President, Board of
Directors
It is the season of giving and of giving
thanks. A special thank you to those
who have made it possible for Nikkei
Concerns to provide health care services
in an environment sensitive to heritage.
Your continual generosity and support
in these tough times of the lagging
economy and talk of war measures the
strength of this community. On behalf
of the Nikkei Concerns Board of
Directors, I thank you for your interest,
compassion, limitless volunteer hours
and belief in our mission.
Many thanks go to the employees of
Nikkei Concerns who provide
professional care and services to our
families and friends participating in all
of Nikkei Concerns’ programs.
Caregiving is a noble profession
requiring patience, stamina and a
special heart to endure the joys and
heartaches of our beneficiaries.
As my term of office comes to an end,
I thank the Board of Directors for their
leadership, support and hard work. It
is through their strategic leadership
Nikkei Concerns remains committed to
providing services reflecting the needs
and desires of the elderly.
Through my job, I have the
opportunity to talk to seniors from all
walks of life and from all corners of this
What would Nikkei Concerns be if it
weren’t for Dr. Ben Uyeno His spirit of
giving penetrated every aspect of his life,
possibly nowhere more than at Seattle
Keiro. His support helped ensure that
Seattle Keiro provided a much-needed
service, and his dedication to Nikkei
Concerns helped make it the vital
community organization it is today. Our
long-time friend and supporter has
passed away, leaving a legacy of
dedication and kimochi.
Dr. Ben was involved with Nikkei
Concerns in many ways. As a physician
within the Japanese American
community, he saw many of his older
patients having difficulty living in
mainstream nursing homes. When
Seattle Keiro was in its planning stages,
Dr. Ben and Dr. Ruby Inouye, a fellow
physician in the community, were
recruited to join the organization and
impart their medical knowledge. “He
was very involved in the residents’
care,” says Dr. Ruby.
Dr. Ben was dedicated to seeing
Seattle Keiro succeed. He served on the
Board of Directors from 1976 to 1985.
In 1979, he became Medical Director.
Adding to his already busy schedule, he
was elected President of the medical
staff at Providence Hospital in 1981.
“He loved Issei. And he was a great
fundraiser,” says Russ Akiyama,
former Administrator of Seattle Keiro,
who worked with Dr. Ben for over 18
years. “He had a vision and it turned
into his life. He must have raised
thousands of dollars just by talking
passionately to hundreds of individuals
about the project. ”
country. One of their greatest joys is
time spent with grandchildren.
Conversely, they worry about their
health, health care and rising medical
costs. Here in the Pacific Northwest,
seniors are no different. The Nikkei
community can be proud and thankful
that by working together, they have been
able to provide the means to diminish
health care anxieties and preserve the
precious relationship between seniors
and the grandchildren through
programs such as KIDcare.
Clearly there is more to be done and
many challenges to face as we anticipate
future residents and participents. I have
confidence with your continual input
and support Nikkei Concerns will
successfully provide high quality
services to the elderly for years to come.
Thank you for giving to us so we can
give back to you. a
From the desk of the CEO
By Catherine Kanda, Chief Executive Officer, Nikkei Concerns
The holiday season is traditionally
the time that people give to others –
whether it is giving a special gift to a
friend or loved one, sponsoring a family
that is less fortunate, donating to a toy
or food drive or making a contribution
to a charity. All of these gifts are given
with generosity and compassion to
make another person’s life better and
happier.
Throughout the year, Nikkei
Concerns is very fortunate to receive
many generous gifts. Everyday, we are
given the gift of help through our many
wonderful volunteers, the gift of
serenity created by our volunteer
gardeners, the gift of beauty created by
our ikebana volunteer and the gift of
support from our many donors. We are
indeed very fortunate.
The holiday season is also a time
when we gather with family and friends
and share the warmth of
companionship and caring. We may
also reflect on our lives and our families
– our children, our parents and our
grandparents. It is a time that we
remember and thank others for all that
they have done for us.
The 21 st century has introduced us to
a New World in all facets of our lives.
Changes in technology, economic
activity and the political setting impact
how we provide health care services to
the elderly in our community.
The Nikkei Concerns Board of
Directors, as the governing body for the
organization, must continually look
towards the future to determine how to
best serve the elders in our community
and remain competitive and viable in
today’s health care marketplace.
As part of our efforts, the Board of
Directors recently held a retreat to
discuss the future and how to be the
most efficient and effective board for
Nikkei Concerns was created with the
notion that we can provide better care
to our elders as a community and that
our elders deserve the very best that we
can offer. By combining our efforts and
resources we are able to do much more.
We are very thankful for all that the
community has done for us over the
years.
Each hour spent volunteering and
each dollar given in donations helps
make the lives of our participants,
residents and employees better. Your
gifts touch many lives.
As we close this year with memories
and reflections, we look forward to a
new year of growth and opportunities.
With your continued support, Nikkei
Concerns can continue to serve the
needs of the community.
Thank you for giving to Nikkei
Concerns. Warm wishes for a wonderful
holiday season. a
Board Plans Changes in New Year
By Carol Suehiro, President, Board of Directors
Nikkei Concerns. The Board reexamined
its structure, roles and
responsibilities. We discussed how to
reach a higher level of board
performance to meet the challenges of
current times and the future.
We will continue these discussions
over the next several months and will
keep you posted. Our current
governance structure is working well
but we want to continually look for ways
to be more effective and to better serve
and communicate with our community.
The Board remains committed to the
mission of Nikkei Concerns and we will
continue in our role as stewards of the
mission. We are looking forward to the
opportunity to better serve you. a
Ancestral Traditions in Today’s World
Koden (ko·den), n. - Traditional
Japanese gift of money given to the
bereaved family as an expression of
sympathy.
The practice of koden is an integral
part of Japanese history and culture.
ritual which occurs in most Buddhist
ceremonies including funerals.
powder between the fingertips raising
it to eye level before dropping the
powder in the incense burner. Koden,
which translates to “this is for your
incense expense” started as a way for
mourners to pay for the incense.
The Issei who immigrated to America
brought their customs and traditions to
their new homeland. The early years
provided little opportunity for the Issei,
primarily young single men, or shortterm
workers who planned on returning
to Japan with money, to socialize.
Funerals became a way to bring people
together, even if the deceased was
unknown to a mourner. Koden was
enclosed in a special envelope or kodenbukuro.
Often excess koden money
would be used to provide refreshments
after the service.
Koden evolved as a gift to the
bereaved family to help them pay the
funeral expenses and guaranteed that
the deceased would have a proper
burial. As the Issei men began bringing
their wives to live in America, the social
aspect following a service changed.
Excess koden money was not kept for
personal use but was donated to the
temple or used to buy gifts like tea,
cakes, manju, dishes, or postage
stamps. The custom of giving away
remaining koden continues today.
The Japanese culture is deeply
immersed in traditions and values
which have stood through time. One
such value is on which is a sense of
indebtedness; a child is indebted to his
parents for their caregiving. The child
thus honors his parents and repays his
on through his actions during his
lifetime. This may include taking on his
parents’ social and financial obligations.
Another heartfelt cultural concept is
reciprocity. Its sense of obligation
requires that all acts of kindness, no
matter how small, are paid back later
in kind. Both on and reciprocity are still
apparent in the practice of koden. The
amount of koden varies according to the
mourner’s relationship with the
deceased or if the deceased or his family
received a previous koden gift from the
mourner or his family. It is very often
the case that lists of koden obligations
are kept and passed down from parent
to child.
Presently koden reflects the
continued integration of Nikkei into
American society while still holding on
to their original spirit. It is a way to
celebrate a loved one’s life and keep his
or her memory alive. Through the
perpetuation of koden, we pay tribute
to our ancestors, honor the values and
traditions that they held dear and instill
a unique sense of who we are to our
children and our children’s children.
Regardless of religious or ethnic
background, it is a common practice
today for family members to choose an
organization or cause that was
important to the deceased to be the
beneficiary of any monetary gifts
received in sympathy. Nikkei Concerns
is honored to be the recipient of these
gifts as it signifies the faith and
continued trust people place in the
organization’s mission to serve our
respected elders. As a non-profit, these
gifts directly serve the residents and
program participants and contribute
significantly to the quality and scope of
services we offer. a
The Gift of
Giving
Lillian Hayashi, Administrator of
Community Services
The Community Services’
programs of Nikkei Concerns have
been the grateful recipient of the Gift
of Giving from thousands of
employees, supporters and
volunteers, not just this year, but as
each year comes and goes.
The programs of Community
Services (CS) are:
KIDcare, Keiro Intergenerational
Day Care, licensed for 62 children
from ages 6 weeks to 5 ½ years:
KIDcare provides intergenerational
interaction on a daily basis for our
children and the grandmas and
grandpas living at Seattle Keiro and
through weekly visits to Nikkei Manor
and Kokoro Kai. Learning experiences
include Japanese language, songs and
culture. The unconditional love the
children share with the elders is
immeasurable.
Kokoro Kai, Adult Day Program:
For over 24 years, Kokoro Kai has
helped elders of our community to ‘age
in place’ at home or other living
situations. By bringing them to Nikkei
Manor on a tri-weekly basis, the
program is conducive for rebuilding and
making new friendships in a warm and
secure atmosphere where wellness,
nutrition and Japanese cultural
activities are promoted. This program
not only gives participants solid social
interactions, but also gives the caregiver
at home respite time while their loved
one is being cared for. This program
was developed by Julianne
Kumasaka and Yuri Kumasaka who
were instrumental in the growth and
popularity it enoys today.
Nikkei Horizons, Continuing
Education Program:
CS’ most popular and fastest growing
program is Nikkei Horizons, giving 350
to 400 participants each quarter a
Yoshiko Minato and Fuchin Chou in one of Nikkei Horizons’ many low cost classes
Bunka Embroidery.
wonderful opportunity to learn through
classes and workshops. Nikkei Horizons
also offers tours to local and state
popular sites, and regional
excursions, like the
Canadian Rockies Rail
Tour, Alaska Cruise,
numerous trips to British
Columbia, and to the
Oregon Inland and Coast.
Nikkei Horizons
succeeds due to the
knowledge, experiences
and talents of the
instructors, facilitators,
coordinators and support
teams who are ALL
volunteers. They are truly
the epitome of what
volunteerism is all about -
giving back to the
community.
Volunteer Services, a most valued
program with over 400 individuals:
NC has been blessed since its
inception with the gifts provided by its
network of volunteers. The founders
and the Board of Directors are all
volunteers who devote time and energy
to create and further Nikkei Concerns’
goals with a sense of pride and
commitment.
The volunteer spirit that abounds in
each of Nikkei Concerns’ programs is
unmatched, unique
to a community
program such as
ours and invaluable
to the care and
services provided
under the umbrella
of our programs.
CS programs
have been the
recipients of many
gifts, including
grants, donations
from the KIDcare
Parent Council,
and many generous
donations received from participants
and supporters. The largest and most
effective donor to our programs is the
KIDcare student Aiden McLean making decorations with Katherine
Okumura and KIDcare teacher Alisa Torres.
Ayame Kai Guild. Through their most
munificent annual giving to Nikkei
Concerns, CS programs have benefited
greatly.
“No act of kindness or gift of giving
from the heart, no matter how small, is
ever wasted” and we are truly grateful
to everyone who has given to our
program and those who have allowed us
to give back to each of you through our
superb Community Services’ programs.
SERVING THE NIKKEI COMMUNITY IN
CANADA
By Catherine Kanda, Chief Executive Officer, Nikkei Concerns
Have you ever wondered if there is a
large Japanese community in Canada
Or, if there is an organization created
to serve the Japanese elderly Or, if the
Japanese Canadians were interned
during World War II
If you have wondered about these
questions, then you must visit the
Nikkei Seniors Health Care & Housing
Society (NSHCHS) and the National
Nikkei Heritage Centre in Burnaby, B.C.
These two organizations have created a
wonderful array of services for the
Nikkei community in Canada.
Nikkei Home- the Canadian version of Nikkei Manor.
On September 13, 2002, several
Nikkei Concerns Board members and
staff attended the grand opening of the
Nikkei Seniors Health Care & Housing
Society’s assisted living facility, Nikkei
Home, a beautiful 59 unit complex.
During Nikkei Home’s
development, several of their
Board members and staff
visited Nikkei Concerns to
learn about our experiences.
We enjoyed learning about
each other’s communities
and health care systems. It
was wonderful to see their
vision now become a reality.
Similar to Nikkei Manor,
The National Nikkei
beautiful, expansive garden and houses
a museum, a large conference facility
and offices. It is located on the same
campus as the assisted living facility. In
the National Nikkei Heritage Centre,
you can learn about the experiences of
the Canadian Japanese during World
2002: How Your Gifts Helped
By May Leong, Fund Development Specialist
2002 has been an incredible year of
giving for organizations across America,
especially in light of the economic
downturn. While some organizations
saw an increase in donations, others
experienced double digit drops.
As someone relatively new to Nikkei
Concerns, I have been amazed and
humbled by the generosity of our
donors, volunteers and staff. People
continued to give not only with their
time, passion and muscles, but also with
their dollars. This year we launched our
Vehicle Donation Program and have so
far processed over 31 cars. The 2 nd
Annual Founders’ Golf Tournament was
a success, raising $32,000, $6,000
more than the previous year. As always,
we continue to receive donations in
honor of a mother or father or in the
memory of loved ones who recently
passed away.
So what were some things that your
dollars and time supported this year at
Nikkei Concerns
Seattle Keiro
• 27 new electric beds were
purchased so our residents can sleep
more safely and comfortably. Our goal
for 2003 is to purchase 123 more for a
total of 150 electric beds.
• A Hoyer lift (electronic) was
purchased to help staff lift residents
from awkward positions. This helps
dramatically reduce lifting-related
injuries in staff and residents.
• Activity supplies were purchased
for residents to exercise their tactile
skills.
• Dementia care training was
provided for staff members. They
learned to identify different symptoms
and design activities to keep residents
active.
Nikkei Manor
• Air conditioning units were
purchased for residents’ apartments.
We were only able to purchase a quarter
of what is needed this year.
Kokoro Kai
• Participants planted flowers this
summer using planters, soil, and plants
funded by Ayame Kai.
• We purchased Shuji (calligraphy)
supplies like much-needed brushes, ink
and paper.
• New Year’s Party: every year,
volunteers treat participants to a nice
New Year’s Lunch at a local restaurant.
Darcia Tanabe and May Leong register players at
the Annual Founders’ Golf Tournament- one of the
many successful fundraising events for Nikkei
Concerns in 2002.
• State Park reservation fee for our
summer picnic, Pacific Science Center
admission fee, and other outing
expenses were covered by the Volunteer
Fund.
Nikkei Horizons
• Thanks to all the volunteer
instructors who support the program
with their time and efforts, more lowcost
workshops and classes were added.
• Donations of computers, printers,
scanners and software helped to greatly
enhance our program, and the
computer lab in particular.
• Monetary donations helped cut
administrative costs and support
instructor honorariums and fees for
special workshop presenters.
KIDcare
• Students went on over 15 field
trips this year, thanks to financial
support from the Parent Council. The
children went to picnics, visited the
Children’s Museum, library, aquarium
and also participated in the
Tiny Tots Symphony series.
• Parents donated treats, Halloween
pumpkins and tickets to a Mariner’s
game. Volunteers come to play with the
students every Friday afternoon.
Thanks to volunteer and staff
support we achieved the following:
• Keiro rehabilitation center helped
residents walk over 702 miles in 2002!
Aurea Quilit, Rehabilitation
Coordinator, says, “We will work with
a resident for as long as they want. In
fact our oldest resident is 104 years old
and she is still walking.”
• Seattle Keiro’s kitchen served over
170,544 meals this year.
• Our volunteer mailing crew stuffed
and labeled over 77,700 pieces of mail.
When these efforts, small and large,
are added up, it is apparent how much
energy and support is needed. In
uncertain times, demands on services
from nonprofit organizations go up
dramatically. At Nikkei Concerns we
face the challenges of providing quality
care while federal and state spending for
human services has been drastically cut.
Despite the decline in government
support, our staff continues to improve
on coordination within different
departments to deliver respectful care
while increasing resident and family
involvement. Our common goal is
preserving quality of life and improving
the daily experiences of those we serve.
Now more than ever, Americans have
the desire to help others. At Nikkei
Concerns we have seen this desire
reflected in the financial and in-kind
donations, grants and volunteer
involvement throughout the year. We
hope that you will continue to give and
be involved with our programs that
positively touch everyone, young and
old. Thank you for a great year and
here’s to an even better 2003 together!
A SERIES OF ARTICLES TO HELP YOU FIND THE PLANNED GIVING OPTION THAT
BEST FITS YOUR NEEDS
In a previous issue of the Tayori, we
talked about life income gifts. A life
income gift commits cash and other
assets to a future charitable purpose,
while assuring you a continued life
income from those assets. These plans
can enable you to make a substantial gift
while still providing for your personal
financial needs. At the end of the term,
remaining assets are used for charitable
purposes according to the donor’s
wishes.
One form of life income gift is the
Charitable Remainder Trust.
Under a Charitable Remainder Trust,
cash or other assets are irrevocably
transferred to a trustee, who manages
the assets and pays income to you or
individuals you choose for life or a term
of years. At the end of the trust term,
the charitable organization you
designate will receive the remaining
establishing a Charitable Remainder
A Charitable Remainder Trust has
many financial and charitable benefits:
• Commits assets to tax-sheltered
• Provides income tax benefits (if
established during a donor’s lifetime) or
• Donor receives charitable income
tax deduction based on the amount of
the gift, age(s) of income recipient(s)
• Replaces highly-appreciated
Why is the
Endowment needed
As a health care organization,
Nikkei Concerns operates in an
environment of increasing costs
and decreasing federal and state
reimbursements. This gap will
continue to widen, resulting in a
greater need for charitable
support.
The endowment will provide a
stable source of funding to
augment the annual contributions.
This will help ensure that sufficient
resources are available for Nikkei
Concerns to maintain the very
highest standards of care, and to
continue its work for generations
to come.
BINGO!
RESIDENTS HIT THE
JACKPOT WITH BIMONTHLY
GAMES
By Akiko Kusunose, Recreation Services/
Activity Coordinator, Keiro 3rd floor
“GEEE fifty-one! G-51. Anybody,
BINGO”
Numbers are called loudly, and
hands are raised. Sometimes it’s a
resident’s hand, other times it’s a
volunteer’s, calling “Bingo” for the
resident. A volunteer gives a prize to the
smiling winner. Thanks to volunteers,
Keiro residents enjoy Bingo night twice
a month after dinner in the third floor
dining room.
The third Wednesday of each month
(except March, July, August and
December), Ayame Kai holds Bingo
night for the Keiro residents. Ayame
Kai, Nikkei Concerns’ auxiliary group,
gathers donated items for Bingo prizes
during its annual rummage sale each
spring. Other prizes come from Ayame
Kai’s budget. The members take turns
running the Bingo night.
Ayame Kai Bingo night has a long
history, started soon after Seattle Keiro
was established. There have been so
many dedicated members who have
helped with this activity,
like Naomi Yamashita.
Naomi was a Keiro staff
member and a dedicated
Ayame Kai member.
Because her parents used
to be residents at Keiro,
she knew how much the
residents enjoy Bingo.
She wrapped all the Bingo
prizes for almost twenty
years until she suddenly
passed away in 1997.
Everyone’s a winner at Bingo Night. Keiro
resident Dung Thi Pham celebrates her victory.
Two and a half years ago, another
Bingo night was started. When his
mother became a Keiro resident, Neill
Urano realized how popular Bingo
night was. He and wife Janice talked
to their friends, and Urano Group Bingo
was started. Other residents’ families
soon joined as volunteers. About forty
residents now enjoy Urano Group Bingo
night every month with the help of
fifteen or sixteen people. Plenty of prizes
are prepared by the Uranos and
everybody wins twice. Although Neill’s
mother has passed away, Urano Group
Bingo continues. “It’s fun for us. We
enjoy it,” says Neill, adding, “It wouldn’t
be possible without the generous
support of friends, families, residents
and the staff of Keiro.”
Thank you to Ayame Kai. and thank
you to the Uranos and their friends.
Your “giving” spirit truly gives pleasure
to our residents. a
Dr. Ben, continued from page 1.
Dr. Ben’s fundraising skills weren’t
limited to large financial donations. His
skill in procuring smaller donations
here and there helped out, too. He used
his persuasive skills to get books
donated for book sales, and sashimi
donated for special residents’ meals.
“He must have gotten a ton of apples
donated,” says Sam Shoji, retired
Seattle Keiro social worker and personal
friend of Dr. Ben. The apples were made
into pies to be sold at Ayame Kai’s
Holiday Craft fairs.
“He went out of his way to take care
of his patients,” continues Sam, who was
one of Dr. Ben’s patients before he
retired. “He’d come in to Keiro on the
weekends to push the meal carts around
and serve the residents their food. He
was an all-around super guy.”
Dr. Ben with friend and volunteer, Lillian Sakurai
When he retired in 2000, he didn’t
stop helping at Nikkei Concerns. Every
Tuesday afternoon he came to Nikkei
Manor to conduct his book group, but
later he transformed it into a movie
group that attracted more participants.
He favored old American movies and
those that could inspire discussion
afterward. Films about Japanese history
and Japanese American internment
during World War II were favorites, but
so were musicals like “Oklahoma!”
small to accommodate the full size yoroi
kabuto but he didn’t want to hide it
away in storage. He felt the intricately
braided plates of the armor and
embossed metal helmet should be
admired, preferably by a wide audience
who would appreciate its historical
background. So he donated it to Nikkei
Concerns.
“It’s a beautiful piece of art,” Mr.
Nakagawa says. “I wanted to donate it
to Nikkei Concerns because Seattle
Keiro or Nikkei Manor would be an
excellent place to display it. We have
so many connections here either
through our family or friends, that I
knew plenty of people could appreciate
it.”
The mask with its bristly mustache and golden teeth greets visitors
to Keiro’s 2nd floor.
Dr. Ben, continued from previous page.
“Dr. Ben had energy and passion to
educate Japanese elderly,” says Naoko
Ulstein, Nikkei Manor Recreation
Services Coordinator. “Even when he
experienced his own health problems,
he still kept coming to Nikkei Manor.
He never gave up on people, even if they
had a hard time understanding.”
Dr.Ben’s strong compassion for
others was demonstrated in many ways.
He stressed the importance of learning
and keeping one’s mind active and
engaged, at any age. He gave of himself
and shared his knowledge to help all
those around him. We will miss Dr. Ben
but he lives forever in our hearts. a
A memorable retirement gift
The armor was a gift from friends
when Mr. Nakagawa retired from his job
in Japan. As a teacher for the US
Department of Defense (DOD) school
system, he taught grades four through
eight for over 25 years, 23 of which were
spent in the Tokyo area. When he
wasn’t teaching, Mr. Nakagawa enjoyed
flying model airplanes. He belonged to
the Yokoda Air Force Base Model
Airplane Club, which included both US
military and Japanese national
members. When he announced his plan
to move back to the United States after
retirement, the Club members pooled
their money to give him a worthy gift.
They presented him with the yoroi
kabuto.
Mr. Nakagawa’s decision to donate
the armor to Nikkei
Concerns, rather than to a
museum, was derived from
his long connection to the
organization. His father lived
at Seattle Keiro, and he
himself has volunteered
there. He’s also been on
several Nikkei Horizons
tours and taken a Japanese
cooking class.
The armor, a replica of 11 th
century samurai warfare
attire, is a formidable sight. At over four
feet in height, with a grimacing mask
baring golden teeth beneath the helmet,
it stands protectively in its case. “Kids
are particularly fascinated by it,” Mr.
Nakagawa says, adding that it is almost
grotesque in its
fierceness. A
samurai sword
is positioned
next to the
armor to
complete
the set.
Sukiyaki is one of the most popular
Japanese dishes. Many Nikkei Manor
On September 14 th , the First Hill
Food can be a big part of our lives
especially when we get older. Here at
Nikkei Manor, some residents like to
talk about food, to join in the cooking
activities, to buy their favorite treats
from nearby stores, and to eat out at
their favorite restaurants. And I have
to admit that I have fun talking with
residents about food-related subjects.
This was one of many donations to
Nikkei Manor through the year. We are
very fortunate to have many people in
the community who care about our
elderly. Thanks to every one of you who
Shizu “Lillian” Sakurai – Beading
and Jewelry Making Instructor
After 94 years, Mrs. Sakurai’s life
story reads like an epic novel!
Born Shizuko Ando in Japan in 1907,
Mrs. Sakurai lived first in Hokkaido and
then in Tokyo, the daughter of an army
captain. When the army grew inflated
with officers and her father was taken
out of active duty, he seized the
opportunity to follow a dream, and
sailed across the Pacific to start a new
life in America. Shizu, her mother, sister
and brother stayed behind until he
could send for them. Working odd jobs
in the LA area at first, Yoshihisa Ando
hatched a unique plan to use his
ethnicity and culture to economic
advantage. The early 20 th century saw
the escalation of Hollywood and movie
stardom in America. As elaborate
homes were built in Hollywood to
accommodate new stars and their
wealth, a niche for the Japanese
gardener was created. Yoshihisa knew
nothing about gardening, but sent away
for books on the subject and taught
himself Japanese landscaping. Soon he
was building gardens for stars like
William S. Hart, a Western film star of
the silent movie era. As Yoshihisa’s
reputation and business grew, he was
able to send first for his wife and son,
and then later for his two daughters to
join him in this great land of
opportunity.
Challenges in a new country
Shizu and her sister, Fumi,
sailed to America on a cargo ship
in 1922. She still has vivid
memories of the voyage,
including her first experience
with a Western toilet which she
used incorrectly. When the family
was reunited in America, the
struggles of fitting into a different
By Kirsten Lutes, Nikkei Horizons Coordinator
Highlighting some of the wonderful volunteers who help make our program a success.
Mrs. Sakurai stays active with Nikkei Horizons
culture began for Shizu. Besides the
strange toilets and Western dress, there
was the English language she had to
contend with in order to progress in her
studies. Shizu remembers being sent to
kindergarten (at age 14!) where she was
expected to pick up the language on her
own. Eventually a special English class
was started for foreign students, and
after about a year, she was able to
advance to a regular classroom. Even
with her struggles with English, she
achieved good enough grades for
acceptance into UCLA, where she
graduated in 1931 with a degree in
French.
Return to Japan
When her mother died unexpectedly
in 1936, Shizu and her father returned
to Tokyo to bury Mrs. Ando in her
homeland. As Shiz was not yet married,
and not having much luck finding a
husband in the States, she and her
father decided to stay on in Tokyo. As
luck would have it, the first job she
landed as an English instructor was at
the school of the man she would
eventually marry. Hiroshi Sakurai ran
a language school where he taught
French. He needed an English
instructor, and solicited Shizu to work
for him. Their working relationship
progressed to friendship and then
beyond, and in 1937 they were married.
Her son Seiya was born the following
year.
As a French linguist, Shizu’s husband
was a rare commodity in Japan, and in
1940, just 6 months before the attack
on Pearl Harbor, he was sent to
Indochina as a French interpreter to a
Japanese general. Shizu, in the
meantime, kept house in Tokyo in a
beautiful, large Western-style house,
where she lived happily with her father,
son, and many of her in-laws and
extended family. When threat of attack
on the city became imminent with the
advance of the war, the whole family
transferred to Saitama prefecture to
stay with relatives there. In May of
1945, Tokyo was bombed and Shizu’s
home and most of her belongings,
including treasured photo albums and
other mementos, were destroyed.
For a whole year after the war ended,
Shizu did not know if her
husband was alive or dead. He
was stuck in Indochina, with no
way to send word to his family,
or leave the country. During this
time, Shizu was recruited as an
English interpreter for the
American military in Sapporo,
Hokkaido, where she, her father
and son moved. Eventually, her
husband returned to Japan and
the family moved back to Tokyo
where Hiroshi set up a lucrative
PX store selling Japanese souvenirs to
American soldiers. It was here that
Shizu had her first, rather unexpected
introduction to the pearl business.
“Lillian’s Pearl Shop”
An acquaintance of Shizu’s husband
inquired one day about a potential
English speaker who might be able to
take over the wholesale pearl business
of his associate who had recently died.
Hiroshi volunteered his wife for the job,
and after some initial protest, Shizu
began the new career and hobby that
would carry her through the rest of her
life. When she and her husband moved
to Seattle in 1962 to be with their son
who had just landed a job with Boeing,
she brought her pearl business with her.
Using her many contacts back in Japan,
she imported pearls to the States and
sold them around the Northwest.
Eventually, she and her husband took
over a small store in downtown Seattle,
where “Lillian’s Pearl Shop” was
established and remained until 1993.
(The shop was in what is now the
Banana Republic, right next to the old
Coliseum Theater.) Four years after
retiring from her business (at age 90!)
Mrs. Sakurai joined Nikkei Horizons
program, teaching Beading and Pearl
Stringing. It is a symbiotic relationship,
as one of the self-professed keys to Mrs.
Sakurai’s excellent health and vitality is
“keeping busy and staying active”.
Nikkei Horizons, in exchange, benefits
from Mrs. Sakurai’s unique skill, her
vast life experience, and her gracious,
warm and inspiring presence. Thank
you, Mrs. Sakurai, for your many years
of service to Nikkei Horizons. Your
contribution is a gift, and your presence
a joy!
In March 1978,
Kokoro Kai opened
its doors as a 6-
month trial project.
Its goal was to
develop a daycare
center for the elderly,
Kokoro Kai to test the impact of
Adult Day the program in the
P r o g r a m J a p a n e s e
community.
Prior to the opening, a steering
committee was formed made up of staff
members (Fred Takayesu, Dennis
Yamashita, Melanie Sako, Russ
Akiyama, Ann Haruki) and
volunteers (Chairperson Mitsi
Mihara, Dr. Chisato Kawabori,
John Takizawa, Julianne
Kumasaka.) The committee met
monthly for six months to assess the
need for such a center.
Kokoro Kai was sponsored by Issei
Concerns (now Nikkei Concerns) and
was funded by a one-year grant from
CETA (Comprehensive Employment
Training Act.) The grant supported two
positions: Project Director Dennis
Yamashita and Activities Coordinator
Melanie Sako. Participants were
charged $2.00 a day. Seattle Keiro
prepared lunch twice a week
supplemented by a Kokoro Kai cooking
classes once a week. The Keiro van was
used for field trips and transporting
participants to and from Kokoro Kai.
Issei Concerns contributed $1,500 to
supplement costs since the daily fees
were insufficient.
The Japanese Presbyterian Church
was chosen as the site since it was
located only one block from the former
Seattle Keiro on 24 th Avenue, and
continued to be Kokoro Kai’s home for
20 years until it moved to the newly
built Nikkei Manor in 1998.
More volunteers than participants
During the first month of the pilot
program there were, on average, only
three participants. Seven volunteers
came regularly to help in various ways.
The center was open three times a week,
from 10 to 3. During the six months of
operation, the maximum number of
participants was 10. It was a struggle
to convince the Isseis to participate.
Many of them had worked hard all their
lives to achieve independence, and were
not used to receiving any assistance,
especially from strangers.
In August 1978, the 6-month pilot
program came to a halt. By that time,
the participants were enjoying their
time at Kokoro Kai and were looking
forward to attending and to deepening
their friendships with their new
acquaintances. One of the volunteers,
volunteers, led by Koichi, kept the
center open just one day a week from
September 1978 to February 1979.
More volunteers were recruited and
were able to keep the center open. The
volunteers provided transportation
using their own cars, helped with the
activity programs, served lunch that
came from Keiro, and even washed the
dishes.
In March 1979, funding by CETA
made it possible to resume the
operation to three days a week and paid
staff were hired. Mitsuko Kagawa
Christianson was hired as program
coordinator, Barbara Hug as activities
coordinator, and Joe Stevenson as
van driver. On March 21, 1979, the first
anniversary of Kokoro Kai was
celebrated. The average number of
participants increased to 13.
When the CETA funding ended, the
Nikkei Concerns Board, under the
leadership of Chairman Tosh
Okamoto, vowed to support Kokoro
Kai. In July 1980, Nikkei Concerns
hired Masaru Aoyama as the
program coordinator and Ham Koba
as van driver. Masaru’s many
contributions included writing four new
verses for Kokoro-kai-no-Uta. Up to
then, the Kokoro Kai song had only one
verse written by Julianne Kumasaka.
From a small beginning, Kokoro Kai
has grown due to the faithful, dedicated
KIDcare Gives
and Receives All
Year Long
By Carol Hirayama, Director of KIDcare
Trick or Treat! KIDcare kids got plenty of Halloween treats from Keiro and
Nikkei Manor residents.
Since joining KIDcare in July, I have
had the pleasure of witnessing people
give so generously to KIDcare. I’ve also
observed the special joys that children
bring to people’s lives with their
spontaneous and innocent ways.
One of the most precious gifts I’ve
experienced is the joy of seeing a
resident’s face suddenly light up for the
first time in weeks when a child has
spoken a few words or smiled sweetly.
Observing a resident reach out to grasp
a child’s hand and seeing that child
respond by shyly reaching out to meet
that hand is a touching scene. The
children at KIDcare have been so
fortunate to interact with our residents
at Nikkei Manor and Keiro through
various activities such as singing songs,
playing games, doing crafts and sharing
tea-time together. It’s wonderful to see
these positive and inspiring
relationships between generations and
across ethnicity.
At KIDcare we’ve benefited from the
thoughtful ways people have given of
themselves and their time. The
generous donations by Ayame Kai and
their granting KIDcare’s Wish List for
supplies and equipment is very much
appreciated.
KIDcare’s Family Council has
devoted much of their time, energy and
fundraising efforts to improve KIDcare.
Our KIDcare families have cleaned
KIDcare from top to bottom this past
summer, donated many
goodies from their rummage
and bake sales, funded field
trips for us, and
accompanied teachers and
children on those field trips.
KIDcare’s staff have been
treated to a Mariners game
and picnics as well. We’ve
been given so much from
KIDcare families and I’d like
to say a heartfelt thank you
for all of their support and
various ways they’ve
tirelessly contributed to the KIDcare
program.
We’ve also been fortunate to have
individuals from the community
volunteer their time at KIDcare. One
individual is Daniel Kashima who
started volunteering at KIDcare as a
school-required community service
project. Since then he brought two of
his friends, Skyler Magnuson and
Michael Leong, who now come after
school on a weekly basis to KIDcare
where they enthusiastically interact
with our preschoolers. The children
look forward to seeing them, especially
the boys. Having such wonderful male
role models has been fun and exciting
for the children and the staff. We’re
lucky to have such an inspirational trio
at KIDcare.
We’ve been bestowed at KIDcare a
great many things. I would like to thank
everyone. It has been through so many
generous and giving hearts that KIDcare
has been able to flourish. You have all
helped make our KIDcare program so
precious and special and I look forward
to seeing it continue.
In 2002, we donated over $35,000
towards the annual Nikkei Concerns
Great Holiday
Gift Idea!
wish list. We have also established an
endowment fund to ensure that funding
to continue the work of Nikkei Concerns
will always be available.
In addition to fund raising, Ayame
Kai conducts monthly bingo for the
Keiro residents (see p. 10 for related
article.) This event is held the third
Wednesday of the month and is
increasing in popularity. As a result, the
supplies of prizes are dwindling.
Donations of little knick-knacks and
stuffed animals, which are popular
prizes, would be appreciated, and may
be left with the receptionist at Seattle
Keiro.
Ayame Kai has a long history of
supporting Nikkei Concerns over the
years. We have sponsored two auctions
which raised over $200,000 in 1987 and
1993. With our successful fund raising
activities, Ayame Kai has been able to
fund over a million dollars to enhance
programs at Seattle Keiro and Nikkei
Manor. The items purchased have
ranged in scope from lap bibs and food
trays for Seattle Keiro residents to two
wheelchair/passenger buses and a 24-
passenger bus, as well as many other
items that enhance the residents’ daily
lives.
With the support of the community,
Ayame Kai can continue our goal of
providing a place of comfort and dignity
for residents of Seattle Keiro and Nikkei
Manor.
If you would like details of any of
these activities or projects, please
contact Seattle Keiro at (206) 323-7100
or Ayame Kai (206) 323-6522. a
Please add $5 for shipping and handling if you prefer your charm to be mailed.
