BOTSWANA PLAYS HOST TO PEPSI ICC
WORLD CRICKET LEAGUE DIVISION 7
The Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 7 (WCL Division 7) takes place in Botswana from 6-13 April 2013.
This will be the second time that Botswana hosts
a Pepsi ICC World Cricket League event, after it
staged the previous Division 7 in May 2011.
Fiji, Germany, Ghana, Nigeria, Vanuatu and host
Botswana will all be competing for the chance
to lift the WCL Division 7 trophy. The winner and
runner up from this event will join Kuwait, Jersey,
Argentina and Bahrain for WCL Division 6, which
will be staged in Jersey from 21 to 28 July 2013.
Pepsi ICC WCL Division 7 will be played on three
grounds: BCA NO. 1 and BCA No. 2 in the capital
Gaborone, and Lobatse, located in the southeastern
city of Lobatse.
This divisional event is part of the Pepsi ICC
Development Programme, which provides
regular playing opportunities for similar
standard Associate and Affiliate Members in an
international, 50-over competition structure.
It provides valuable nation versus nation
experience to the competing teams, while also
helping the teams improve the standard of
competitive cricket on the field of play.
TEAM PROFILES
Botswana
Botswana became an Associate Member of the
ICC in 2005, and, after finishing second in the
Pepsi ICC Africa World Cricket League in 2006,
and then winning the event two years later, the
side made its debut on the international stage.
However, Botswana was relegated from WCL
Division 5 in 2008 and WCL Division 6 a year
later. The side successfully hosted WCL Division
7 in 2011, where it finished fourth to retain
its position in Division 7. Winning three of its
matches, the side missed out on promotion
based on net run rate. The highlight of the
tournament was Botswana’s chase of 278
against Norway for the loss of two wickets. A
commanding 158 not out by opener Faisal Rana
in this match contributed to the right hander
being the highest scorer of the tournament.
The team has shown some strong
performances recently, finishing top of the
table at Pepsi ICC Africa Division 2 in October
2012, losing only one match. Botswana then
went on to finish fourth at the recent Division
1 event, including victory over Tanzania in a
super-over.
Fiji
In 1965, Fiji, along with Ceylon (as Sri Lanka was
previously known) and USA became the first
Associate Members of the ICC. Fiji played in the
inaugural WCL Division 3 event in 2007, where
it finished fifth to be relegated to Division 4,
and the side has been relegated down the
WCL ladder ever since. In its most recent WCL
appearance, Fiji finished fifth in WCL Division 6
in 2011, notching up one win to be relegated to
WCL Division 7. Left-hander Joe Rika scored 185
runs in the tournament to finish as the sixth
highest run-getter.
The tide seems to be turning, however, for the
small island nation. Fiji recently competed in
the 2013 Pepsi ICC EAP Division 1 Championship,
where it finished third in the seven-team
competition, winning four of its matches. Ten
members of the squad are returning for WCL
Division 7, and the experienced squad includes
veteran pace bowler Jone Seuvou, who is
returning to the team after five years.
Fiji has established a strong development base,
and its Under 19 side finished fourth in EAP
Division 1 in 2011, while the Under 17 side was
runner-up in the Under 17 event in 2012.
Germany
The only side from Europe in this event, Germany
debuted in the WCL programme in November
2010, where it finished second in Division 8,
defeating Zambia, Bahamas and Gibraltar to be
elevated to Division 7 in 2011. Germany missed
out on promotion from the event on net run rate,
but robust performances from Asif Khan, Milan
Fernando, Rana Javed Iqbal and Ehsan Latif bode
well for the side.
Germany finished tenth in the European
Division 1 Championship in July 2011, and, in
2012, it conducted tours of Austria and Denmark,
recording results of 1-1 with both higher-ranked
opponents. Strong individual performances
from opening batsman André Leslie and off spin
bowler Shakeel Hassan helped the team to
its victories.
Currently ranked 13th in Europe, Germany held
a training camp in Düsseldorf in February, and
the side includes five players who will be making
their debuts in international competition.
Germany is establishing a strong youth
development programme, holding Under 15 and
Under 19 tournaments in 2012, and looking to
introduce street cricket in 2013 with support
from ICC Europe.
powerful stroke play. The 23 year-old has
been involved in the Senior Men’s team for
four years, and has already been called upon
to captain the side.
Joe Rika
Captain Joe Rika is the High Performance
programme, and will be joined in Botswana by
his brother, Colin. Rika has represented the East
Asia-Pacific Region at the Australian Country
Cricket Championships, and captained his side
at the recent ICC EAP Championship.
Rana Javed Iqbal
Vice-captain Rana Javed Iqbal finished
the 2011 Division 7 event as the leading
wicket-taker in the tournament, capturing
18 wickets in six matches. The veteran fast
bowler took 6-25 to dismiss Japan at that
event, and shows no sign of slowing down
in Botswana.

Ghana
Ghana became an Affiliate Member of the ICC in
2002, and competed internationally for the first
time in 2006, finishing third in ICC Africa Division
3. In 2011, the side successfully hosted the same
event, winning the tournament on home soil to
progress to Division 2 a few months later.
The side showed off its all-round capabilities in
Division 2, held in South Africa in 2011, winning
five of its matches to finish second and progress
to the Division 1 event. Four players won player
of the match awards during the tournament,
with Obed Harvey winning three. Promoted to
Division 1, the side beat fourth-placed Nigeria in
its only win of the tournament to be relegated to
Division 2 in 2012. However, good performances
from Francis Bakiweyem, Peter Ananya, Obed
Harvey and Vincent Ateak helped the team seal
qualification from Africa Division 1 to its inaugural
WCL event, Division 8, in Samoa in 2012.
Ghana finished runner-up in the eight-team
event after losing to Vanuatu in the final by
39 runs. An early bowling onslaught from
Isaac Aboagye, who captured 4-39, helped the
side to claim promotion to this year’s WCL
Division 7 event.
Nigeria
Nigeria is reappearing in WCL Division 7
after finishing runner-up in the 2011 event,
also held in Botswana. The side displayed
a well-rounded team effort, with Joshua
Ogunlola the second-highest run scorer of the
tournament and one of the leading wickettakers.
The side lost only one match, and was
promoted to WCL Division 6 four months later.
Nigeria did not fare too well in the higher
division, and, despite defeating Fiji in the
fifth-place play-off by 102 runs, the two sides
were relegated to WCL Division 7.
In May 2011, Nigeria won ICC Africa Division
2 to advance to Division 1, where the side lost
the third-place play-off to Kenya and narrowly
missed out on winning a spot in the ICC World
Twenty20 Qualifier 2012 in the UAE.
Nigeria has recently held two training camps
to prepare for the Pepsi ICC Africa Division 1
Championship, which was held in Uganda in
March 2013. The side finished fifth, with allrounder
Kunle Adegbla anchoring the team.
Nigeria is currently ranked fifth in Africa and
37th in the global one-day rankings.
Vanuatu
In 2009, Vanuatu won the ICC East-Asia Pacific
Division 2 Trophy, beating Samoa to the top spot
and thus qualifying for WCL Division 8 in Kuwait
in 2010. The small Pacific nation finished second in
its group with two wins, and third overall, to retain
its place in Division 8. Vanuatu went on to win a
bronze medal at the 2011 Pacific Games in New
Caledonia and finished runner-up to PNG at the
Pepsi ICC East Asia-Pacific Division 1 Championship.
The side showed off its all-round skills to
win Division 8 in 2012, beating regional rival
Samoa as well as fellow WCL Division 7 team
Ghana in the process. Patrick Matautaava was
the highest wicket-taker of the tournament,
bagging 14 from five matches, while Nalin
Nipiko and Trevor Langa were instrumental
with the bat.
In February 2013, the side finished runner-up
at the Pepsi ICC EAP Division 1 Championship.
Vanuatu won five of its matches in the seventeam
competition, before losing a hard fought
final against PNG by 38 runs. Twenty-six year
old Andrew Mansale was the third highest
run-getter of the tournament, after being the
leading run scorer in WCL Division 8.
Division 7, Botswana 2013
WELCOME MESSAGES
Alan Isaac
Welcome to the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League
Division 7 in Botswana. Since the Pepsi ICC
Development Programme began in 1997, much work
has been done to spread the game of cricket across
the globe, and that effort and financial investment
is bearing fruit. As our great sport continues to grow
even stronger around the world, the ICC now has 106
Members, 96 of whom are Associates and Affiliates,
spread across five regions. As the overall standard of cricket continues to
improve outside of the 10 Full Members, there is now a clear pathway for
every team to continue to develop its cricketing skills and talents.
The WCL is an important competition that provides all of our Members
with the opportunity to compete with the very top teams in the Associate
and Affiliate world. This plays an important role in improving the standard
of competitive cricket on the field of play amongst Associate and Affiliate
Members. The event also complements the ICC’s ongoing work to improve
all facets of the development of the game, including facilities, coaching,
governance, education and domestic competitions.
I would like to thank the Botswana Cricket Association for its hard work
in helping to stage this event, the media who help to promote Associate
and Affiliate cricket, and also to our excellent sponsor, Pepsi, for the
ongoing support in the development of cricket world-wide.
Finally, I urge the match officials and all the players of Germany, Nigeria,
Fiji, Vanuatu, Ghana and our excellent host Botswana to enjoy the
experience of representing their country, to play the game in the best
spirit, and may the best team win.
Ebrahim A Bhamjee
Dumelang and Greetings!
I am deeply honoured and privileged to be in a
position to once again extend a hearty welcome, on
behalf of my Board and my fellow citizens, to the ICC
officials, the Match Referee, umpires and the teams, to
the Pepsi ICC WCL Division 7. I am personally humbled
by the fact that Botswana has been given the
opportunity to host this event twice consecutively, making it historic yet
again! It would also be remiss of me to not acknowledge and thank the
ICC and ACA for making this possible.
To our new cricketing rivals, Ghana, Fiji and Vanuatu, and old cricketing
foes, Nigeria and Germany, we look forward to a week of highly
competitive cricket, but, more importantly, the establishment and renewal
of friendship for the future.
Botswana is a country of unity in diversity and has a culture of warmth
and belonging which I hope will be experienced and enjoyed by all of
you. My team and I shall endeavour to make your stay in our country as
pleasantly memorable as possible, both on and off the playing field.
My sincere appreciation goes to our President and Patron, HE Lt. Gen, S K
I Khama, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Botswana National Sports
Council, all our sponsors, well-wishers, administrators and officials,
volunteers, ground staff and last but not the least, the media.
May the spirit of the game and true sportsmanship prevail...
