One such product, called ePostboxen, allows a citizen<br />

to collect incoming mail and bills in one secure<br />

place and then link to an Internet bank. The citizen<br />

can then pay all the bills through this entry point.<br />

Citizens also can use ePostboxen to send secure<br />

e-mails. For businesses, Posten offers a track and<br />

trace service similar to what Posten’s private competitors<br />

provide in that it allows businesses to track<br />

parcels on their way to receivers and makes complete<br />

status and transaction history available. Other<br />

functions, offered through Posten’s PacSoft Online<br />

service, include automatic label printing and adding<br />

user profiles.<br />

Likewise, the United States Postal Service<br />

implemented its Confirm offering (www.usps.com/<br />

nationalpremieraccounts/confirm.htm) as a way to<br />

add value for its critical bulk mailer customer segment.<br />

Using a system of barcodes and automated<br />

scanning technology, Confirm allows large mailers<br />

to track their outgoing and incoming mailings<br />

throughout the postal system via the Internet. With<br />

advance knowledge of when mailings are hitting<br />

target mailboxes and when replies are on their<br />

way back, Confirm customers can better coordinate<br />

their marketing efforts and plan staff and inventory<br />

more accurately.<br />

The German postal service (www.deutschepost.de) is<br />

a fine example of using a portal to provide access to<br />

both traditional and online-only services. The site<br />

provides basic information services—such as postal<br />

code searches, branch information, postage calculators<br />

and an online philatelic shop—as well as more<br />

complex services, such as online change of address<br />

and stamp printing. The ePost function offers tiered<br />

(basic to premium) e-mail services, as well as storage<br />

and shared access for digital photo albums and<br />

online subscriptions to more than 200 magazines.<br />

For businesses, the direct marketing shop offers a<br />

whole roster of functions for planning and executing<br />

a direct marketing campaign. It provides links to<br />

marketing studies and other free informational<br />

brochures, contact information for potential direct<br />

mailing partners, detailed postage calculators and<br />

online forums for direct marketers.<br />
