Annual Giving 2013

Our past is rich,
our heritage strong
Old Cranbrookians, parents … past and
present, and friends of Cranbrook School
Annual Giving provides an opportunity for all members of the
Cranbrook community to invest in the School and make a real
difference to the lives of every Cranbrook boy. This fundraising
program is the foundation of all philanthropy at the School.
Restoration of Heritage Buildings
Cranbrook has a unique history – a history which must be preserved.
In 1858 Robert Tooth, a member of the prominent Tooth brewing
family, began construction of a stately residence which he called
‘Cranbrook’. The original Tooth house was described in the Evening
News at the time ‘as one of the most splendid private edifices of the
Colony.’ Today Cranbrook House still stands proudly as a splendid
edifice – Cranbrook House is the heart and soul of Cranbrook
School. It is the home to Rawson House boarders, the School
Chapel and the magnificent Governor’s Ballroom.
The School expends around $100,000 each year on the maintenance
of Cranbrook’s heritage buildings. These magnificent buildings
deserve respect and it is our wish, and that of School Council, to
commence a restorative program which will ensure that Cranbrook
House and the adjacent heritage buildings are maintained in pristine
condition for the next 155 years. Outwardly the buildings appear in
excellent condition but major elements of the buildings’ roofs and
sandstone walls are due for major repair above and beyond general
maintenance.
Our wish is to raise $100,000 per year over the next four years to
ensure that Cranbrook’s historic buildings retain their splendour
within the Cranbrook estate.
Scholarships
Cranbrook aims to be one of the world’s leading Schools, accessible
on merit and distinguished by a diverse community of exceptional
boys. The endowment of scholarships and bursaries is vital in
enriching the educational opportunities for boys who, without
financial assistance would be unable to benefit from a Cranbrook
education. Many Old Cranbrookians have benefited from the
benefaction of others, and have gone on to achieve outstanding
heights within their professions.
Providing support for existing named scholarships and giving
consideration to the establishment of a new named scholarship
program will ensure Cranbrook attracts and retains students of high
achievement regardless of their family’s means. By investing in
Cranbrook’s Scholarship Program you will be investing in young
men, who will be enrolled and expected to contribute to the
betterment of Australian society as a whole.
The Martin Pitt Scholarship
Gifts to the Martin Pitt Scholarship will ensure that the memory
and contribution Martin gave to Cranbrook remain in perpetuity.
Martin was passionate about all things educational, especially
providing opportunities for boys from disadvantaged families or
for assisting boys and families who fell on hard times. The Martin
Pitt Scholarship was established to assist boys who, for financial
reasons, would be unable otherwise to attend Cranbrook.
Before the awarding of the first Martin Pitt Scholarship we
must raise a further $200,000. Please assist us in raising these
funds to enable the School to award the first Martin Pitt
Scholarship in 2014.
Matt Street Scholarship
The Matt Street Scholarship is awarded to boys entering Years 11
and 12. The Scholarship was established by Matt’s father Philip
(Hooky) Street (OC’48) in memory of his youngest son Matthew
who boarded at Cranbrook from 1970 – 1977. The first Matt Street
Scholarship was awarded in 1982 and the family is now eager to
increase the endowed funds to ensure that the scholarship remains
in perpetuity. Criteria for the awarding of the scholarship are:
– Demonstrated community awareness and a keenness for sport
– Without financial assistance would be unable to attend
Cranbrook School
– Either a day or boarding student
– Awarded to a boy who is not already enrolled at
Cranbrook School
– To be held for a maximum period of two years
Indigenous Scholarship
Cranbrook’s Indigenous Scholarship program was established in
2008 with the enrolment of three boys. In 2013 Cranbrook has
eleven indigenous boys receiving a Cranbrook education. All
indigenous students live in either Street or Rawson Boarding
Houses. The cost of educating these boys is considerable. To assist
with the offset of costs Cranbrook has become a partner School
with the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation (AIEF)
which assists selected schools with the offset of costs through their
matched giving program. At Cranbrook our goal is to have two
indigenous boys in each year group from Year 7 through to Year
12. Through the AIEF matched giving program it will be possible
to offer several further scholarships sooner rather than later.
