Unit Commander<br />

15. Upon becoming aware that a member may have a substance abuse problem shall confer with<br />

the member’s supervisor to determine whether there is any fitness for duty or work<br />

performance concerns.<br />

16. After determining that there are no work performance or fitness for duty concerns shall<br />

• confer with the member<br />

• advise the member of options available for assistance including OHS–MAS and EFAP<br />

• follow up, if required, to provide the member with proper support and encouragement to<br />

resolve the problem<br />

17. When determining that there are work performance concerns shall<br />

• confer with the member’s supervisor and refer the supervisor to the duties described under<br />

Item 7 of this Procedure<br />

• confer with the member<br />

• advise the member of options available for assistance including OHS–MAS and EFAP<br />

• follow up, if required, to provide the member with proper support and encouragement to<br />

resolve the problem<br />

• ensure that heightened performance monitoring and management is provided<br />

18. When determining that there are fitness for duty concerns shall<br />

• confer with the member<br />

• advise the member of options available for assistance including OHS-MAS and EFAP<br />

• ensure TPS 649 to the Unit Commander – OHS is forwarded requesting a fitness for duty<br />

assessment including all relevant facts and history regarding the member (e.g. sick record,<br />

performance records, etc.)<br />

• ensure that a mandatory fitness for duty evaluation is arranged, if applicable<br />

• ensure that the member attends for an assessment as determined by the Medical Advisor<br />

or designate<br />

• follow up to ensure that the member complies with ongoing recommendations by the<br />

Medical Advisor or designate<br />

• follow up, if required, to ensure the member receives proper support and encouragement to<br />

resolve the problem<br />

• ensure that heightened performance monitoring and management is provided<br />

19. Upon learning that a member refuses to cooperate with a mandatory fitness for duty evaluation<br />

shall take the appropriate disciplinary action.<br />
