Dear Community Member,
Back to school time is a natural time for everyone to embrace learning. We are pleased to
deliver to you a catalog rich with opportunities to engage your mind and your body. Take
advantage of this time, to register for something new or renew an old interest by taking a class
through Community Enrichment.
We are working to offer more academic classes geared toward adolescents and their families.
Check out our new section entitled, “Academic, Life Skills & Special Interest.” Two elementary
Enrichment classes are being offered immediately following the school day, as well as a
variety of writing classes for middle school and high school age students. Area parents have
asked for these courses, we are happy to fill the need.
Back by popular demand are swim lessons! You will find our most popular class offerings
again in the catalog such as yoga, dance and art. Parents of homeschoolers and preschool age
children, as well as senior citizens will find opportunities for learning. We hope you find a
course to enrich your life.
We are pleased to introduce you to our new Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Mark Bielang.
Mr. Bielang comes to Portage after more than 20 years as an instructional leader and many
years in the classroom. He will be visiting our schools in September and will host a community
open house this fall. Mr. Bielang plans to get to know our families, students and
residents. Please help us to welcome him.
Enrich your life by enrolling in a class with Portage Public Schools.
Sincerely,
Sarah R. Baker
begins with 15 minutes of choreographed dance,
followed by 30 minutes of body sculpting and
stretching. This class condenses the necessary
Becoming a Confident Learner
Steps to Success in Middle School & Beyond
Students and parents often feel anxiety about
the transition from elementary to middle school.
This one-hour workshop is designed by a former
middle school special education teacher for
students AND their parents. The class addresses
topics including communication between parents
and teachers, organizational tips, and how
to proactively prepare for projects and tests.
Students will leave with specific strategies to
help them feel more confident about the academic
challenges of middle school. Some of the tips can
be used throughout high school and college, so
it’s important that students develop useful habits
early. One or both parents are required to attend
with their child. A handout will be provided.
ACT Preparation Workshop
All Squared Away, L.L.C. is offering a threehour
ACT Preparation Workshop to help high
school sophomores, juniors, and seniors prepare
to confidently take the ACT. This is done by
explaining the format of the test, sharing the
types of questions to expect for each section of
the test, teaching general and specific test-taking
strategies, giving tips for pacing during the test,
explaining the rubric for the Writing Test, as well
as administering and correcting mini practice
tests. The best way to reduce anxiety and increase
confidence is to be familiar with expectations.
The requirement of all juniors in MI to take
the ACT as part of the Michigan Merit Exam
(given in March) makes it essential that students
proactively prepare. Students should bring a
