The Future of Education . . The doctoral program at The American College is one-of-a-kind. With a focus on financial and retirement planning, this Ph.D. is uniquely geared toward our profession and the issues that impact it the most. This year has been busy for the program. Following a spring dedication ceremony at New York Life’s headquarters, thanks to the company’s significant gift supporting the program, the first class of students began work in July. The second class commenced in October, and demand for the June 2014 class continues to climb. Dr. Wade Pfau, CFA The Ph.D. program is supported by several new additions, as well as veterans of the faculty. Dr. Melisande McCrae joined The College as Associate Dean of Academics and will serve as the Executive Director of the Ph.D. program. Dr. Wade Pfau, CFA, Professor of Retirement Income, was recruited from Japan and joined the team in 2013. Dr. Melisande McCrae Other critical faculty members include Dr. David Nanigian, Associate Professor of Investments, Dr. Craig Lemoine, CFP ® , Assistant Professor of Financial Planning, and Julie Ragatz, a Ph.D. candidate at Temple University who is Assistant Professor of Ethics and Director of the Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics in Financial Services at The American College. Dr. Craig Lemoine, CFP ® This year also saw the launch of a new test prep program for the Chartered Financial Analyst ® . Similar to The College’s market for CFP ® prep, this program, Analyst Success, will educate students who are pursuing a widely respected designation conferred by an outside institution. The Analyst Success program provides candidates with a simple, effective learning experience so they can be more successful taking the challenging CFA ® exams. By combining the top subject-matter experts in the CFA ® field, new learning technology, and an easier, bundled delivery, The College is reinventing the way candidates prepare for their exams worldwide. CFA ® and Chartered Financial Analyst ® are trademarks owned by CFA Institute. 2007 New York Life Center for Retirement Income Launched The New York Life Center for Retirement Income was created to empower financial services professionals on this critical and evolving field of retirement income security. Frequent research papers and webinars are intended to leverage data directly to advisors. 4
HS Heubner School Centers of Excellence The State Farm Center for Women and Financial Services The Center hosted the second annual Women’s Leadership Academy Summit from April 17-19 in Grapevine, Texas. The participants engaged in rigorous academic coursework, listened to keynote speakers and panelists talk about the industry from a female perspective, and exchanged insightful ideas while networking with one another. During the recognition luncheon, the Center acknowledged the cohort of women who completed the CLF ® program after beginning their studies at last year’s WLA Summit. The Northwestern Mutual Granum Center for Financial Security The Granum Center has sponsored compelling research on how consumers are using social media to connect with advisors. More than 1,000 consumers and 250 advisors participated in the study, which yielded results that guide advisors in crafting a social media marketing strategy that creates a positive online perception. In partnership with Texas Tech University, the Center also conducted research on assessing current levels of financial literacy among the millennial population. The Penn Mutual Center for Veterans Affairs The Center for Veterans Affairs appointed Ted Digges to the position of Director. He previously worked for Merrill Lynch, where he developed effective financial planning strategies for high net worth clients. With a military career spanning 27 years FA Financial Advisor in the U.S. Navy, Ted gained experience in strategic planning, customer service, logistics and program management. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Digges holds a Masters in Management, a Masters in National Security and International Studies and is a graduate of the Darden School’s Executive Program at the University of Virginia. He will help the Center increase its impact in providing scholarships to deserving veterans who are pursuing a career in financial services. The Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics in Financial Services The Center for Ethics sponsored the 4th Annual Cary Maguire Lecture in Applied Ethics. The presenter was Dr. Anthony Catanach, the Cary M. Maguire Fellow in Applied Ethics. His presentation, “Re-engineering the Ethical Culture in Financial Reporting,” highlighted the practices that render financial statements less than meaningful to investors. The Center also hosted two Corporate Members-Only Retreats and the 13th Annual James A. and Linda R. Mitchell Forum on Ethical Leadership in Financial Services. The New York Life Center for Retirement Income The NYLCRI has been a driving force in developing the Retirement Income Certified Professional ® designation. This is the largest and fastest area of growth in academics at The American College. The NYLCRI also recently rolled out a robust, new website with advanced search functions that allow for easy access to over 300 videos on various retirement income planning topics. as seen in USA Today Another new program has gained traction in 2013. The Retirement Income Certified Professional ® designation has become the fastest program to launch in the institution’s history and demand has driven its registrations to over 3,000. Since the program’s recent launch in 2012, there are already 270 completers that hold this designation. The program complements the CASL ® designation that has existed for many years at The College. GS David A. Littell, JD, ChFC ® , CFP ® 2008 Campus Learning Center Graduate School A state-of-the-art learning center complete with video and audio conferencing equipment and a professional HD studio for filming course content was completed and funded by MetLife. The advanced facility offers one of the most technology-driven centers where up to 40 advisors and leaders can meet for courses and retreats. 5
