Williams Harold L. Wilshinsky Barry L. Wolfe David G. Zick Mary Varner Receives 2013 President’s Award Mary C. Varner, Executive Assistant to the President and CEO of The American College, was presented with the 2013 President’s Award on June 25, 2013. The award, the highest honor presented by The Foundation Board of Directors, recognizes Mary for her 38 years of service to The College. Mary C. Varner with Dr. Barton Mary joined The College in January 1975 as a part-time clerk typist. In April 1979, Mary became the secretary to the office of the vice president and treasurer. After serving in this role for nearly a decade, Mary was named an executive secretary in the finance division in 1989. Shortly after arriving at The American College, Dr. Barton recognized the valuable institutional knowledge Mary possessed and hired her to become the executive assistant to the president – a position she has held since February 2004. Presented annually, the President’s Award is intended to highlight the importance of the leadership and stewardship aspects of advancement. Mary’s long years of service, her selfless dedication to The American College, and her steadfast financial support for this institution make her more than worthy of this prestigious honor. 2012 Ph.D. Program Lifts Profession Thanks to a generous gift from New York Life, The American College announced the development of a groundbreaking Ph.D. program in financial and retirement planning in 2012 – the first of its kind of any college in the nation. New faculty were added to support the program and the first cohort of students began in July 2013. 9
