Synergistic Activities:
Dr. Qihua Xiong has comprehensive training and experience in nanomaterials synthesis, characterization,
nanofabrication and optical spectroscopy. His current group focuses on design-based low-dimensional
semiconducting and metallic nanomaterials and their heterostructures from either top-down (via nanofabrication)
or bottom-up (via physical and chemical synthesis) paradigm, with ambitious aims to understand/manipulate their
electronic and photonic properties and to develop technologically important devices for applications in
nanoelectronics, nanophotonics, solar energy harvesting and biosensing. In addition, his recent thrust is to
synthesize from bottom-up topological insulator materials with atomic thickness down to a few nanometers and
investigate peculiar properties of electrons and phonons. Since year 2000, he has published 21 peer-reviewed
articles including three invited review articles in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology, which have been
cited over 580 times. In addition, he has three patents including provisional patent applications and served as
reviewers for Nano Letters, Optics Express, Optics Letters, Carbon, Crystal Growth and Design, Chemical
Communications, Nanoscale, Energy and Environmental Sciences, Modern Physics Letters B and US Civilian
Research and Development Foundation. In 2009, he won the prestigious Singapore National Research
Foundation Research Fellow award from a global competition and started as Nanyang Assistant Professor in
Nanyang Technological University since June 2009.
