Dear Program Director,
We are conducting a research project examining the self-assessment of competencies in clinical supervision.
This research has received ethical approval from the Human Research Ethics Board at the University of
Manitoba. We are seeking your assistance in in forwarding this e-mail to any and all psychologists in your
program who provide clinical supervision to invite them to participate in this study.
Thank you for considering our request. If you have any questions about the study please feel free to contact any
one of us at the addresses given below
Dear Dr. X,
We are writing to invite you to participate in a voluntary online study to evaluate a new measurement
instrument for self-assessing competencies in clinical supervision. If you choose to compete the study you will
receive an automated summary of your scores on the supervision competencies measure. This research has
received ethical approval from the Human Research Ethics Board at the University of Manitoba. Your e-mail
address was downloaded from the official public website of your associated program.
Purpose and requirements of research. For the purposes of our research we define clinical supervision as a
professional relationship between a supervisor and a supervisee in which the supervisor takes responsibility for
the services provided by the supervisee with the intention of developing or enhancing the competence of the
supervisee. The instrument is designed to permit individuals with widely varying levels of knowledge and
experience in supervision to self-assess their competencies. If you are currently providing clinical supervision,
have done so in the past few years, or anticipate doing so in the future, we would welcome your participation in
this study. There is also a small number of questions that ask about the usefulness and value of the survey, along
with a survey of demographic variables related to gender, language, licensure and practice information,
education and experience in providing supervision, ! and a short instrument looking at supervisory self-efficacy.
1
The entire study should take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. Immediately after completing
your survey and before logging out of the survey you will receive individualized information about your
self-rated levels of competency in 17 different domains of supervisory competency.
Confidentiality. All information provided in the survey is entirely confidential and securely stored. We ensure
your confidentiality. The collection and storage of your data is protected by the following procedures. When
you press send your data will be sent to SurveyGizmo in a secure, encrypted form (SSL) and will be securely
stored at SurveyGizmo on a password-protected account accessible only to the researchers mentioned above.
When data collection is complete the data will be downloaded from the SurveyGizmo site to the study's
research computer. Our research computer is kept in a locked laboratory room that is only accessible to the
researchers of this study. Once the study is complete all responses will be deleted from SurveyGizmo.
Identifying information (your email address) will also be deleted from the survey collection site and from our
research computer. This will render the data completely anonymous. Once ! the data is completely anonymous,
the data will not be kept under lock and key any further and may be shared with other members of the research
team as well as other investigators. The plans for dissemination are to present group-level (not individual-level)
results at conferences and to submit the findings for publication in a peer-reviewed publication. Individual data,
along with any individual identifiable information will be destroyed when the study is complete (anticipated
December 2012). The anonymous data set would be kept indefinitely.
