Council approves 0.8-mill levy for May ballot 

Will a lower cost levy restart the engine on public transportation

The engine has remained 

idle on public transportation 

in Perrysburg for more than 

a month. 

The city funded a “gap” 

service from September 23, 

when TARTA (Toledo Area 

Regional Transit Authority) 

ended service, until November 

27. In March voters 

made the decision to opt-out 

of the transit authority and 

then in November, voters 

rejected a 1.45-mill transportation 

levy to fund a new 

city-wide system. The defeat 

was by a slim margin–less 

than 200 votes–and it is 

believed voters did not have 

thorough information on the 

issues presented by the levy.

For the Perrysburg Township 

Fire/EMS Department, 

2012 was a busy year. 

At the January 2 board of 

trustees meeting, Fire Chief 

Tom Brice provided the 

trustees with fire/EMS statistics 

for 2012. The fire chief 

noted that calls were up by 

137 from the previous year. 

The township had 1,642 

runs in 2012, compared to 

1,505 in 2011. Of those, 

1,381 calls were for EMS. 

Life squads responded to 234 

calls. In 2012, the fire 

department answered 261 

calls for service, three fewer 

than in 2011. 

Chief Brice said the 

township requested mutual 

aid 23 times and rendered 

mutual aid 68 times. Additionally, 

LifeFlight was utilized 

on six occasions. 

The largest number of 

residential calls by location 

was at Friendly Village, 

where rescuers responded to 

88 calls for service. For businesses, 

the township 

responded to the Ampoint 

Industrial Park and Cedar 

Park most frequently, 

answering 31 calls each for 

service in 2012. At academic 

institutions, the township 

received the most service 

calls from Owens Community 

College, where they 

responded 100 times. Other 

high volume calls included: 

Perrysburg Commons, 139; 

Perrysburg Care and Rehabilitation, 

46; Village Green, 

At its January 3 meeting, 

Perrysburg City Council 

approved a resolution to 

place a 0.8-mill, five-year 

public transportation levy on 

the May 7 primary election 

ballot. 

If approved, the levy will 

generate an estimated 

$450,000 in property tax 

revenue offering residents 

dial-a-ride and paratransit 

services. 

The levy would cost the 

owner of a $100,000 home 

approximately $25 annually. 

Councilman Tom Mackin 

questioned whether the 

smaller levy would adequately 

fund the system and 

if approved by voters, does 

it allow for financing prior

The most common calls 

were for illness, 211, followed 

by cardiac, 163, multivehicle 

accident, 155 and 

respiratory, 114. 

The department continued 

to receive a large number 

of fire alarm calls at 84. 

Calls for structure fires 

totalled 50, and there were 

34 open burn calls. 

Of those requiring transport 

to hospitals, the largest 

number, 663, were taken to 

St. Luke’s Hospital. Others 

were transported to St. 

Charles, St. Vincent’s, Toledo, 

Bay Park, Flower, St. 

Anne’s, Wood County, University 

of Toledo Medical 

Center or AMA. 

The department collected 

$397,180 in revenue from 

EMS services in 2012, an 

increase of $186,029 from 

2011. 

Route 20 Construction 

The trustees announced 

that a meeting will be held 

at 5 p.m., January 16, at the 

township meeting hall to 

review road construction 

plans for U.S. Route 20 at 

Lime City Road. 

Maintenance Supervisor 

Kraig Gottfried said the 

Ohio Department of Transportation 

is planning to perform 

pavement work on the 

north side of Route 20 at the 

railroad tracks.

continue to have the best 

refuse and recycle program 

in the area, said Judy 

Hagen, litter and recycling 

program coordinator. 

“There will be no 

change in any of the city 

services. Residents will still 

have unlimited weekly collection, 

carry out/carry back 

and alley collections,” she 

said. 

The city is planning to 

implement the automated 

collection program on Earth 

Day, Monday, April 22. 

Mrs. Hagen explained 

that the next several months 

allow time to answer citizens’ 

concerns and develop 

an easy transition. 

Informational public 

meetings to assist residents 

with the new collection program 

will be held T h u r s - 

day, February 7 and March 

7, 6 to 8 p.m., at the municipal 

building. 

There will be weekly 

informational articles in the 

Perrysburg Messenger 

Journal on single stream 

recycling and the automated 

collection system. 

Information also will be 

available on the city Web

•City crews will be safer 

from work related injuries. 

This is extremely physical 

work and workers’ compensation 

claims are high. 

Exposure to traffic will be 

greatly reduced as the automated 

arm is operated from 

the truck cab. Such things 

as accidental sticks from 

medical syringes and chronic 

injuries from continual 

lifting of trash cans/bags 

and recycle bins will be 

greatly reduced. 

•Automated collection is 

a more efficient method of 

collection. Once trained, 

the average time per pickup 

is eight seconds. 

•Each collection truck is 

a one man operation reducing 

the city collection 

staffing needs. 

The new system will 

reduce collection staff from 

nine members to five. This 

reduction has already been 

accomplished through attrition. 

No city employees 

have lost their jobs. 

•The new automated 

trucks will be operated by 

one city worker from inside 

the truck cab, eliminating 

the need to get in and out of 

the truck for each location.

Grayson. “This is upgrading 

that one vehicle to one and a 

half vehicles. We would provide 

additional commuter 

service and have the same 

hours and the same kind of 

service as we had before but 

with additional hours. We 

believe that using a vehicle 

and a half would really do a 

nice job for us. 

“And with this amount of 

money, we would have 

enough to pay ourselves 

back with transit dollars for 

transit service over the five 

year period of the levy.” 

The councilman also 

added that plans are to continue 

working with Ride 

Right for transit services. 

“Our general idea here 

was to continue with Ride 

Right. We have no reason 

not to go with Ride Right,” 

he told council members. 

“They did a great job in the 

interim for us. They won our 

selective process and there is 

no reason to change. I think 

they proved worthy and 

have been an excellent partner. 

Their assistance and 

their service level really 

gave us the opportunity to 

look at even further cutting 

without going to bone. Yes, 

we are lean here but we are 

not hitting bone. We are definitely 

doing what the riders 

found to be functional and 

that is the same service plan 

that we were running during 

the interim plus a bit more.”

Automated refuse and recycling collection to begin Mon., April 22–Earth Day 

A toter has more capacity than two 45 gallon trash cans or seven garbage bags 

in the same size footprint. 

Dimensions of the toters are 43.25 inches tall, 35.25 inches from front to back 

and 29.75 inches side to side. 

A toter has the same footprint as two recycle bins set side by side and has five 

and a half times more capacity than one red recycle bin, which holds only 18 gallons.

The ridership information, 

said Mr. Grayson, was 

invaluable and allowed the 

changes in the cost of the 

system. 

“If you sat down and 

told us a year ago that this 

is what we could do now 

and would actually work, 

none of us would have 

believed it,” said the councilor. 

“I got chided for suggesting 

that this was a 

$600,000 problem. It is a 

lot less than that– none of 

us fully knew. We didn’t 

know until we put the 

wheels to the ground. And 

until you have that service 

and getting the real concrete 

data with real passengers 

and real route times 

and all that information that

“So there may not be an 

accurate reading of what 

the use may really be,” she 

told council. “And because 

of this, the league believes 

a 1-mill levy is not too 

much to ask. 

“Our feeling is it [the 

November levy] didn’t go 

down–there was a lot of 

misinformation and we

•Lids on trash containers 

keep rain and snow out of the 

garbage. This moisture adds 

weight to the garbage which 

translates into increased landfill 

tipping fees caused by 

water weight.

on Collection Days 

•Lids on the toters prevent 

animals and the wind from 

spreading trash into the neighborhood.

United food and toy drive a huge success. Especially, 

the Perrysburg Messenger Journal, Downtown 

Perrysburg Inc., Perrysburg Area Arts Council, 

PCU volunteers, Santa’s photographers, Santa 

letter writers, Perrysburg firefighters, parade volunteers, 

teenage volunteers, Santa and all the businesses 

that were collection points. 

There are a few “kids with Santa” pictures that 

have not been picked up. The pictures will remain 

posted on Rick Ruffner’s O-Deer Diner window 

through January 14. These pictures are free to parents. 

Again, thanks everyone who helped to make 

this a very happy and merry Christmas for a lot of 

folks.

Two people die in Rte. 20 accident 

Two people have died and 

three others were injured after 

a collision on U.S. Route 20 

and Tracy Road in Perrysburg 

Township last Thursday. 

According to the Bowling 

Green post of the Ohio Highway 

Patrol, the crash occurred 

at 5:09 p.m. on Route 20 

when a vehicle, driven by 

Dustin M. Kominek, 24, of 

Toledo, lost control on the 

snow covered road. 

Mr. Kominek was traveling 

eastbound on Route 20 

when he apparently lost control 

of his vehicle on a snowcovered 

section of the road, 

explained Lieutenant Jerrod 

Savidge. 

His car came to rest on the 

westbound side side of Route 

20 and was subsequently 

struck on the passenger side 

by a vehicle driven by Melissa 

S. Domanowski, 33, of 

Toledo. 

Killed in the accident was 

Mr. Kominek’s wife Rachel 

M. Kominek, 26, who was

Troopers were assisted at 

the scene by the Perrysburg 

Township police, fire and 

EMS, Troy Township EMS, 

LifeFlight, Great Lakes Towing 

and Pat & Son’s Towing. 

All occupants were wearing 

seatbelts at the time of the 

crash, except for Mr. 

Kominek. Alcohol is not believed 

to be a factor in the accident, 

which remains under 

investigation.

those entrusted with our youth 

from the time they leave home 

until returned to our door 

steps. This includes transportation 

safety to crossing guards 

to classrooms. 

Based upon the current 

breakdown of dealing with 

mental illness facing our country 

means certain proactive 

steps need to be taken. The 

government N has decided years 

ago to ignore mental illness by 

emptying a majority of the institutions. 

The United States 

has the solution to insure the 

safety of all schools and other 

agencies that would be threatened 

by terrorism

National Guard who can be 

supported by the other 

branches of the armed services. 

The National Guard 

serves in your community and 

they can assume a commitment 

to school safety without 

any additional cost to the taxpayers. 

The National Guard 

can make it mandatory for soldiers 

to serve a certain time in 

their community guarding our 

schools on site as part of their 

tour of duty. In addition, this 

country can bring home our 

soldiers from the other 

branches N serving in foreign 

countries to also provide the 

protection to our schools and

National Forestry police who 

have guns, fancy vehicles, and 

could spend a tour of duty in 

our schools to protect our children 

like they protect our trees

ODOT gives tips for winter driving 

As Ohioans get ready to 

drive in the first possible winter 

storm this season, the Ohio 

Department of Transportation 

(ODOT) warns motorists: “In 

Ice and Snow, Take It Slow,” 

especially on interstates and 

state-maintained highways 

where speeds are faster and 

traffic volumes are higher. 

Research shows by the time 

the first winter storm hits, most 

motorists have forgotten their 

safe winter driving skills. 

“Because of last year’s mild 

winter, many of Ohio’s motorists 

haven’t driven in significant 

ice and snow in about 20 

months,” said ODOT Director 

Jerry Wray. 

ODOT will make history 

this winter by being the first 

state in the nation to use greencolored 

strobe lights on its 

snowplow trucks. Studies show 

green lights are more easily detected 

by the human eye than 

other colors. The new green 

lights, along with new white 

lights, will be added to the existing 

amber lights creating a 

color combination unique to 

ODOT.

and ice crashes, in the 2011-12

of all winter driving related 

fatalities occurred on

Perrysburg High School’s 

presentation of the Winter 

One Acts owes its success 

due in part to the hard-working, 

behind-the-scenes technical 

crews. This year’s 

Winter One Acts are slated 

to open January 24. 

During The Winter One 

Acts, the PHS crews work in 

an extremely tight area, 

which requires a high level 

of teamwork and professionalism. 

The crew members 

strive to make each performance

intimate theatre setting features

Fire Division, Way Library to 

present CPR, AED, first aid classes 

The Perrysburg Fire Division 

and Way Library are partnering 

to offer life-saving 

CRP, AED (automatic external 

defibrillator) and first aid 

classes. 

Sponsored by the American 

Heart Association, these 

classes will take place throughout 

2013, providing opportunities 

for local residents to learn 

life-saving skills from certified 

instructors. 

The American Heart Association’s 

CPR and AED learning 

programs are designed to 

help increase survival rates of 

those stricken by cardiac arrest. 

Fewer than one-third of 

cardiac arrest victims get CPR 

help during the critical four to 

six minute period after an incident. 

Almost 80 percent of 

sudden cardiac arrests happen 

in the home, and 92 percent of 

victims don’t survive, often 

because people around them 

do not take action and begin 

CPR. 

Classes are limited to 20 

students, and registration is required. 

The following classes 

will be offered in 2013: 

Family and Friends CPR, 

from 6 to 8 p.m. on January 16, 

May 15, July 17, or September 

18. This is a free class, but registration 

at the library information 

desk is required. 

Participants may wish to buy a 

book for $5. This class will 

teach adult hands-only CPR, 

child CPR with breaths, adult 

and child AED use, infant 

CPR, and choking relief for all

Alvin “Alvie” Perkins will celebrate 

his 80th birthday on January 11, 2013. 

Alvie was born in Perrysburg. He 

served in the U.S. Army during the 

Korean War, worked as a plumber, 

pipefitter and welder, and has spent 40 

years in public service in Wood County. 

He retired as Wood County Commissioner 

one year ago on his 79th birthday.

NEW TRAFFIC PATTERNS 

Traffic will be reduced to 2-way traffic only (no 

turn lane) on Eckel Junction Road just west of 

State Route 25 (Dixie Highway) for utility work 

beginning January 14, 2013. There will be flaggers 

present to enable turns into surrounding

Dr. William “Bill” J. 

Spath, 84, died Wednesday, 

January 2, 2013, at Manor 

of Perrysburg. He was born 

in Toledo, to George and 

Dorothy (Lodge) Spath on 

April 22, 1928. 

In his early years, he was 

a 124-pound all-city guard 

for Woodward High School, 

where he graduated in 1946. 

He went on to graduate from 

Ohio University and Case 

Western University School 

of Dentistry. In 1952, he entered 

the United States Air 

Force and served two and 

half years in Okinawa, 

Japan, where he was the 

base dental officer. In 1956, 

he bought a dental practice 

on the corner of Madison 

and Erie in downtown 

Toledo, where he practiced 

for more than 30 years. 

Bill married Susan 

Warns, and in August they 

celebrated 37 years of marriage. 

He enjoyed sailing, skiing, 

and making others 

laugh. He never turned 

down an adventure. It may 

have been as simple as a 

snowmobile trip to the Turtle 

Club on half frozen ice, 

or sailing off on a six-month 

journey with three small 

children, a tutor and his 

wife. 

Dr. Spath is survived by 

his wife, Susan; children, 

Lindsey (Matthew) Roth, 

Bill and Andrew Spath; 

grandsons, Cole and Luke 

Roth. 

A memorial mass was 

held Monday, January 7, at 

St. Rose Church, Perrysburg.

born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, 

on July 27, 1966, to Roland

Wayne and Fremont, Indiana, 

during his childhood 

and moved with his family to 

Syracuse, Indiana, where he 

attended Wawasee High 

School. He graduated from 

Wawasee in 1984 and went 

on to Purdue University, 

where he obtained a degree 

in mechanical engineering. 

He was the global director of 

Gear Engineering for Dana 

Corporation, where he 

worked for 27 years. 

Mr. Smith is survived by 

his wife, April; children, 

Sabrina, Evan and Griffin; 

mother; sister, Paula Fiscus; 

brother, Brad (Cheryl) 

Smith; nieces and nephews; 

father-in-law, Joe Babich, 

and numerous extended family 

members. 

A celebration of life service 

will be held today, January

Mendieta, 80, of Perrysburg, 

died Thursday, December 27, 

2012, in Hospice of Northwest 

Ohio in Perrysburg. She was 

born in Toledo, on September 

21, 1932. She married Antonio 

“Tony” Mendieta in Bowling 

Green, Ohio, on December 23, 

1950. 

She was a 1950 graduate of 

Waite High School and continued 

her education at Owens 

Community College later 

working as a preschool 

teacher with Head Start for 

more than 10 years. The popular 

local “Mama Mendieta’s 

Salsa” was named for her 

from a recipe passed down 

from her father. She was a 

member of St. Rose Catholic 

Church in Perrysburg. 

She is survived by her husband, 

Antonio; nine children,

Waterford, Michigan, Tony

program 

to meet Jan. 15 

A local program for children 

who have experienced 

the loss of a sibling, parent, 

grandparent or friend is being 

established as Good Grief of 

Northwest Ohio. 

By offering age-appropriate 

support groups and programming, 

Good Grief will 

help families find positive 

ways to work through the 

emotions associated with such 

a significant loss. 

A community informational 

forum offering details 

on the program will be held on

St. Rose collects coats, warm clothing 

During December, St. Rose School eighth graders Jake Cowan and Stephanie Ravas collected 

coats, warm clothes and other winter wear for the Helping Hands of St. Louis in 

East Toledo. Their original goal was 700 items, but with the generous support of St. Rose 

Parish and St. Rose School, they collected more than 1,400 items. Jake, Stephanie and 

their families delivered the items to St. Louis on December 18. By the end of November, 

the Clothing Closet at the neighborhood center in East Toledo had been depleted of coats, 

hats, mittens and scarves so Paul Cook, director of Helping Hands of St. Louis, was very 

grateful for the donations. As the weather remains cold, many people in the Toledo area 

will be warmer because of the generosity of St. Rose.

School boys basketball 

team traveled to Northview 

last Friday and defeated the 

Wildcats quite handily, 63- 

41. The Jackets were led by 

the scoring of Nick 

Moschetti, with 19 points, 

and Shane Edwards, with 

18. 

The Yellow Jackets now 

improve to 7-2 overall and 

remain undefeated in the 

Northern Lakes League 

with a record of 4-0. 

Despite the lopsided victory, 

the first quarter was 

very close and low scoring 

by both sides. Edwards 

added four quick points at 

the beginning of the quarter, 

and Nate Patterson 

added a basket underneath 

and the first quarter ended 

in a 6-6 tie. 

Moschetti and Edwards 

combined for the first nine 

points of the second quarter, 

giving Perrysburg a 

seven point lead. The highlight 

came off a Bryant

The Perrysburg Lady Yellow 

Jackets remained undefeated 

after traveling to 

Northview on Friday, January 

4, and defeating a feisty 

Wildcats team. They fought 

hard through four quarters 

and two overtimes to defeat 

Northview for the second 

time this season. The Jackets’ 

53-49 victory pushes 

them to 11-0 overall and 8-0 

in the Northern Lakes 

League. 

The first quarter was a 

great indicator to how hard 

both teams were going to 

battle. Both teams were littered 

with turnovers, combining 

for 15 of them and 

four team fouls in the first 

five minutes of the game. 

A bright spot came for 

Perrysburg when Abby Sattler 

knocked down a three 

from the top of the arc to give 

the Jackets a 9-4 lead with 

two minutes remaining in the 

quarter. This would remain 

the score heading into the 

second. 

The second quarter, 

which provided much more 

scoring from both sides, was 

started by Sarah Baer hitting 

a fast break layup to extend 

the Perrysburg lead to seven 

points. 

Northview steadily 

chipped away at the lead, 

preventing Perrysburg from 

having open jump shots on 

the offensive end. This combined 

with LadyKats sharp 

shooter Kendall McCoy 

being perfect from the field, 

knocking down three shots in 

a row including a three 

pointer from the corner, 

pulled Northview within two 

points. Northview trailed 15- 

13 with three minutes until 

the half. 

Katie Dunphy turned the 

momentum back toward the 

Jackets, hitting a three 

pointer from the wing. However, 

Northview pushed the 

ball upcourt and responded 

to Dunphy’s three with one 

of their own. McCoy 

knocked down a baseline 

jumper on Northview’s next 

possession to tie the game. 

Despite the quick response, 

Perrysburg did not 

slow down. Baer put in another 

layup and Sattler converted 

a free throw to give 

the Jackets a three-point 

edge, 21-18, at halftime. 

Northview gained the 

lead in the third quarter, controlling 

the offensive rebounds 

and cruising on a 

quick 9-0 run in the first 

three minutes of the second 

of the wing to Edwards, 

running along the baseline, 

who caught it and laid it 

in. 

Northview hung around 

with their three point shooting 

but trailed 19-14 early 

in the second. 

Northview was playing 

inspired basketball, thanks 

in part to the tough play 

from Connor Hartnett who 

converted two post up 

jumpers and two free 

throws. Despite his tough 

play, Northview couldn’t 

gain the lead because of 

Patterson’s inside presence. 

On the offensive side of the 

ball, he added two baskets 

underneath the hoop with 

less than two minutes until 

half to give Perrysburg a 

25-20 lead. 

To start the second half, 

Perrysburg gained a 12- 

point lead in the first 55 

seconds. Edwards hit a 

three from the top of the arc 

on the opening possession. 

Then Moschetti stole a 

Northview pass and laid it 

in, and Patterson converted 

half. The Jackets trailed 27- 

21. 

Perrysburg then rallied 

with a 7-0 run of their own 

which was started with a 

Dunphy three pointer and 

was capped off with a Sattler 

layup to give Perrysburg the 

lead, 28-27. 

To finish the quarter, 

Northview regained the lead 

by one point off of two 

McCoy free throws. 

Baer came alive in the beginning 

of the fourth quarter, 

scoring five points in a row to 

propel the Jackets to a 32-29 

lead. 

Perrysburg and 

Northview traded a one-point 

lead for the rest of the quarter 

until Alex Brown made two 

free throws and Sattler added 

another, each going to the 

line with a one-and-one opportunity 

because Northview 

now had seven team fouls. 

This gave the Jackets a 39-35 

lead with 39 seconds left. 

That’s when Northview’s 

McCoy drove to the baseline 

made a jump shot to pull 

within two, which was followed 

by a very controversial 

call. Perrysburg was called 

for a foul under the basket 

after McCoy’s shot went in 

but somehow McCoy landed 

back at the free throw line 

and made both shots to tie 

the game.

drew up a great play, breaking 

Northview’s press and resulting 

in an easy Baer layup 

and two-point lead. 

The LadyKats pushed the 

ball immediately up the right 

side of the court and dished it 

inside to post player Kendall

despite being double-teamed.

Perrysburg was on 

its way up, 32-20. 

Halfway through the 

third quarter, the lead was 

extended to 15 points when 

Edwards stole a pass at 

half court, dribbled it 

ahead and slammed it with 

two hands while Northview 

players watched from behind. 

At the end of the third 

quarter, Northview struggled 

to get into an offensive 

rhythm working the ball 

around but not being able 

to convert a basket. Perrysburg 

held a 17-point lead 

headed into the final quarter. 

Through the fourth quarter, 

Northview could not 

close the gap. The closest 

they could get to the Jackets 

was 16 points. The daggers 

came with two minutes 

remaining in the game 

when Edwards and 

Moschetti both added three 

pointers to go up by 27 

points. 

Perrysburg girls outlast Northview in double OT 

Perrysburg quickly inbounded 

the ball and pushed 

to score for the win but could 

not convert the attempt as the 

buzzer sounded for overtime 

with both teams tied at 41. 

After neither team scored 

for the first three minutes of 

overtime, Maddy Williams 

got a baseline jumper to roll 

in but McCoy of Northview 

nailed a three at the other end 

to give Northview a one 

point lead. 

Northview began to play 

keep away with less than a 

minute remaining, and after a 

Perrysburg foul, the LadyKats 

converted two free 

throws to go up by three 

points. With 29 seconds remaining, 

the Lady Yellow 

Jackets found themselves 

down by three with 

Northview’s leading scorer 

McCoy at the line shooting 

two with the game seemingly 

close to being over. 

However, McCoy missed 

both free throws and on her 

second miss, Williams 

jumped on the loose ball and 

handed it ahead to Lindy De- 

Long, who dribbled the ball 

the length of the court and 

was fouled while making her 

layup. She then converted her 

free throw to tie the game at 

46 with 18 seconds left. Neither 

team scored in the remaining 

18 seconds and the 

game was extended to a second 

overtime. 

Perrysburg outscored 

Northview 7-3 in the second 

overtime, with all of the 

Jackets’ points coming from 

the free throw line. Sattler 

put the game away, making 

her final two free throws for 

the Jackets with 18 seconds 

left to give Perrysburg the 

dramatic 53-49 victory.

Awareness/Bomb Threat 

Management Workshop on

the Wood County Court Security

The training will be provided 

for court personal, law

bomb training prevention for

National Christmas Bird Count 4 Kids event at Olander Park and Woodlawn Cemetery in January 

Christmas Bird Count 4 

Kids, an extension of the annual 

Audubon Christmas 

Bird Count, is an opportunity 

for families to learn about 

and document birds. This 

two-day event, for children 8 

to 16, starts with bird counts 

on Saturday, January 12, at 

Olander Park from 8:30 a.m. 

to 12:30 p.m., and Sunday, 

January 13, at Woodlawn 

Cemetery, from 1 to 4 p.m. 

The event concludes with the 

Christmas Bird Count 4 Kids 

Finale Festival in the Nederhouser 

Community Hall at 

Olander Park from 5 to 7:30 

p.m., on Sunday, January 13. 

Families can come to one 

or both bird counts, where 

they will learn from expert 

birders and become part of a 

national citizen science program. 

Each event begins with 

a binocular and bird identification 

boot camp before participants 

take off in teams for 

90 minutes of birding. Each 

team, lead by expert bird 

guides, will walk a short loop 

and document the birds they 

see and hear. Afterwards, the 

teams will head back inside, 

grab a hot drink and share 

their results with fellow birders 

and families. After Saturday’s 

count, Nature’s 

Nursery will join participants 

in the hall at 11:30 a.m. with 

a conservation education program 

featuring live birds. 

The Finale Festival, in the 

Nederhouser Community 

Hall, is an evening for families 

to share stories about 

their birding experience.

well as the national Christmas 

Bird Count totals. 

Hands-on activities, refreshments, 

and backyard bird 

feeding displays from Wild 

Birds Unlimited will be offered 

at the Finale. Featured 

speaker Greg Links presents 

“Birding in NW Ohio” at 6 

p.m. Families will learn how 

to be a part of the Great 

Backyard Bird Count. Volunteers 

will help kids enter their 

weekend counts onto eBird, 

a Web site that collects bird 

count data from citizen scientists. 

CBC 4 Kids was established 

in Sonoma Valley, California, 

in 2007, as a way to 

involve kids and their parents 

in the 113-year-old citizen 

science event, the Audubon 

Christmas Bird Count. 

Each citizen scientist who 

annually braves snow, wind 

or rain to take part in the 

Christmas Bird Count makes 

an enormous contribution to 

conservation. Audubon and 

other organizations use data 

collected in this longest-running 

wildlife census to assess 

the health of bird populations 

and to help guide conservation 

action. 

In 2006, the organizers of 

the “traditional” Audubon 

CBC in Sonoma turned away 

14 kids and their discouraged 

parents. 

But they made a promise 

that the next winter they 

would create an annual, sustainable 

community birding 

event focusing on kids ages 8 

to16. The program received 

extensive national coverage, 

and now CBC 4 Kids is budding 

up across the United 

States, Canada and beyond. 

With shared missions to 

provide the resources, support 

and education necessary 

for preservation, The Olander 

Park System and Woodlawn 

Cemetery are partnering to 

bring the CBC4K to our 

community. They are excited 

to help local families and 

kids join others across the 

country in this national conservation 

effort.

and Arboretum is a National 

Historic Site. With 

more than 160 acres of scenic 

and rolling hills, Woodlawn, 

a private, non-profit 

cemetery, has over 40 acres 

of burial space available. 

A public mausoleum, crematory,

well as traditional burial 

plots are open to people of all 

spiritual beliefs and ethnicities. 

Public programs, tours and 

field trips continue the rural 

cemetery origin mission to 

share the beauty, natural 

beauty, and architectural significance 

of Woodlawn.

Club will hold its 29th Annual 

Charity Auction on Saturday, 

February 9, at the Hilton Garden 

Inn, Levis Commons, Perrysburg. 

This year’s event 

theme is “The Magic of Giving” 

and the event will feature 

both a silent and oral auction. 

In addition, there will be two 

featured performers–Pattrick, 

an award winning professional 

magician, and Kelly Croy, a 

nationally known speaker, performance 

artist and educator. 

Local WTOL-TV News Anchor 

Jerry Anderson will serve 

as master of ceremonies and 

auctioneer.

of items and have secured vacation

to benefit projects such as donating 

$200,000 to the new 

Perrysburg Rotary Community 

Park project on Fort 

Meigs Road; contributing 

$10,000 for the construction of 

Fort Imagination in Woodlands 

Park, and purchasing a 

multi-passenger van for the 

Perrysburg School district. 

Outside of the Perrysburg 

community, the Perrysburg 

Rotary Club has funded projects 

such as: contributing 

$25,000 to help construct the 

Deborah House, a home for 

abused girls in Timisoara, Romania; 

the drilling of 13 water 

wells in Vietnam; collecting 

350 used bicycles for shipment 

to Guatemalan villages for 

transportation; coordinating 

the delivery of fire trucks and 

medical equipment to third 

world countries; contributing 

$18,000 to the Mensies Center, 

an orphanage for abused children 

in Belize; and participating 

with Rotarians worldwide 

to contribute more than $650 

million for the eradication of 

polio.
