Dear Lord, I thank you for this day. I thank You for my being able to see
and to hear this morning. I'm blessed because You are a forgiving God and
an understanding God. You have done so much for me and You keep on
blessing me. Forgive me this day for everything I have done, said or
thought that was not pleasing to you. I ask now for Your forgiveness.
Please keep me safe from all danger and harm. Help me to start this day
with a new attitude and plenty of gratitude. Let me make the best of each
day to clear my mind so that I can hear from You.
Let me not whine and whimper over things I have no control over. Let me
continue to see sin through God's eyes and acknowledge it as evil. And
when I sin, let me repent, and confess with my mouth my wrongdoing, and
receive the forgiveness of God.
And when this world closes in on me, let me remember Jesus' example -- to
slip away and find a quiet place to pray. It's the best response when I'm
pushed beyond my limits. I know that when I can't pray, You listen to my
heart. Continue to use me to do Your will.
Continue to bless me that I may be a blessing to others. Keep me strong
that I may help the weak.. Keep me uplifted that I may have words of
encouragement for others. I pray for those who are lost and can't find their
way. I pray for those who are misjudged and misunderstood. I pray for
those who don't know You intimately... I pray for those who don't believe.
But I thank you that I believe.
I believe that God changes people and God changes things. I pray for all
my sisters and brothers. For every family member in their households. I
pray for peace, love and joy in their homes that they are out of debt and all
their needs are met.
I pray that every eye that reads this knows there is no problem,
circumstance, or situation greater than God. Every battle is in Your hands
for You to fight. I pray that these words be received into the hearts of
every eye that sees them and every mouth that confesses them willingly..
This is my prayer.

Russo’s Reflections…
I am glad to be home after being away for three
weekends in a row.
Steubenville Youth Conference
The weekend of June 17-19 I had the pleasure
of traveling with our high school students and
adults to the annual youth conference at
Franciscan University of Steubenville in
Steubenville, OH. Franciscan University has
been hosting youth conferences for the past
thirty years. It is a wonderful weekend for
teens and adults to receive a heavy dose of
Catholicism. As a priest attending the
conference, I spent most of the weekend
hearing confessions along with the other 16
priests in attendance. Over 2,000 teens
participated in the conference with more than
700 of them taking advantage of the Sacrament
of Reconciliation. It was an amazing weekend
and I enjoyed it thoroughly! I would highly
recommend all of our high school students to
attend the conference next summer.
Rest & Relaxation
On June 25-28 I spent time with Fr. Troy
Nevins at a cottage on Lake Leelanau for some
rest and relaxation. From July 1-8 I traveled to
Charleston, SC for my annual visit to my
Executive Chef, Fred Bennett and his family. I
always enjoy this trip because Fred prepares
outstanding meals all week. Throughout the
week we spent time at the beach, golfing, wine
tasting, visiting the Charleston Tea Plantation,
and the Angel Oak Tree that has been in
existence for over 1500 years.
Father’s Day Cards
Parishioners of OLC, thank you very much for
the multitude of Father’s Day cards! Thank
you for all of your wonderful comments,
prayers, generous support and appreciation of
me as your pastor! I appreciate it immensely! I
am very blessed and grateful that the Lord led
me back to OLC to pastor and shepherd his
flock!

TEENS ON A MISSION has returned from New York City with
an assured view that the people of the Big Apple and the Bronx are
much more gracious and welcoming than we could have imagined.
Father Ricardo welcomed us and treated us as guests rather than
boarders. He said “when we arrived after dark and watched how we
worked together to unload the vehicles/trailer in a timely manner he
knew we would be different than his former occupants”. On Sunday,
we began counting the many circumstances where we felt blessed.
The parish had no music ministry, and only a few song books. With
Mary Harkema, the Kasmer girls and the many other musically
inclined participants, we were able to enhance their worship services
throughout the week.
As for worksites: the Food Bank, JP Kennedy Center, Thrift Store,
the Hispanic Center and the Retreat Center all remarked about how
dedicated and committed the Teens On A Mission participants were
to give unceasingly and with joy. Many hours were dedicated to help
these agencies who struggle to find volunteers who are truly willing to
work.
The Food Bank is struggling with State/Fed budget cuts and they
chose to air the circumstances on all the local channels while we were
working. So our work crew agreed to get up at 4AM to be on time.
The JP Kennedy Center was so impressed with the dedication of the
crew they treated them to lunch and a tour of a the city on the final
afternoon. The Thrift Store, overwhelmed with donations,
appreciated the many shelves built to display and organize their
products. The Hispanic Center needed files organized and discarded
and were so grateful on the last day they took the group to their
warehouse to do the same. As for the Retreat Center/Parish not only
did we get the 5 story staircase painted but fixed almost every kneeler
in the church and spruced up the gardens in the front and cleaned the
church. Father Pat Martin (our Parish Mission presider this past fall)
joined us on Thursday evening for dinner and Mass. Many of the
youth met him for the first time and were very impressed with his
homily. He brought free books for all the participants. In gratitude,
Father Ricardo and his volunteers prepared a fantastic Latino
(Dominican Republic version) meal for us on Friday evening. Home
safely, we continue to count our many blessings and remember those
who provided for us as we experienced the different cultures,
lifestyles, traditions, poverty, and way of life of those who live in the
big city of New York. We are very grateful for this opportunity and
the many friendships we developed. Thank you for all your support.
BLOOD DRIVE - Please come donate blood on July 21st from 10
a.m. to 7 p.m. in the school gym. We will receive $10 for each person
who signs in. Call 874-6841 for more details.
BACK TO SCHOOL DRIVE - Watch the bulletin for details and
stock up on the sale items advertised in the stores. Catholic Charities
foster children appreciate your support.

The Consolata Guild Picnic will be held Tuesday July
26th at 6 PM at Our Lady of Consolation Family
Center. Please bring a dish to pass and table service for
yourself and a sister. Everyone is invited. Please come

Healing Mass held on the first Wednesday of the
month (Aug. 3, Sept. 7, Oct. 5) at 7PM in St. Alphonsus
Church, 224 Carrier St NE, Grand Rapids. All are
welcome who are living with physical, emotional and
spiritual chronic and/or life-threatening illnesses; and
their caregivers, family and friends. Please join us each

Ministry to the Sick and Homebound - Jesus always
showed concern for those who were ill. The concern
that Christ showed for the bodily and spiritual welfare
of those burdened by illness is continued by the Church
in its ministry to the sick.
If you or a loved one is hospitalized or homebound
please contact the parish office. Extraordinary Ministers
of Holy Communion are available to bring prayer,
presence and the Eucharist to those who are
homebound or in long-term facilities.
Low Gluten Host Available - It has been brought to
our attention that a number of children and adults are
unable to receive communion because they have gluten
intolerance and/or wheat allergies. We now have
available a low gluten (0.01%) host that has been
approved by the American Bishops. If you are unable
to receive the normal host, please come to the offertory
table before Mass, and let an usher or server know that
you would like to receive a low gluten host. Then at
Communion time, an Extraordinary Minister of Holy
Communion will stand near the same table and
distribute the Body of Christ to you. If you have any
questions, feel free to contact the parish office or

Miscellaneous News…
The Diocesan Young Adult Ministry office will
host World Youth Day at Home for all young
adults (ages 18 or older) beginning at 3PM on
Sunday, July 24 at the Piazza Secchia in Cathedral
Square in downtown Grand Rapids. The event will
feature a concert by noted World Library Press
musician and composer Jorge Rivera, who is also
the director of Pastoral Juvenil Hispana for the
Archdiocese of Chicago. A $5 donation is
requested.
The event concludes with 6PM Mass at the
Cathedral of St. Andrew. During the Mass, Very
Rev. John J. Geaney will offer a special blessing for
the young adults who will be making the pilgrimage
to the XXVI World Youth Day in Madrid, Spain.
Attendees are invited to bring a flag representing

Catholic Charities West Michigan
Rainy skies did not dampen the enthusiasm of the
players, volunteers or fans that came out to Fifth Third
Ballpark on Thursday, June 23, 2011 for the 24th annual
Let’s Go to Bat for Kids charity softball game. Despite
the game being cancelled due to the weather, nearly
$30,000 was raised for the child abuse prevention and
recovery programs of Catholic Charities West Michigan.
Thank you to all who participated, came to the game,
volunteered or purchased raffle tickets. With your
support, we are able to provide help and create hope in
the lives of those in need.
God’s Kitchen is in need of drivers who use their own
vehicle to pick up meals at God’s Kitchen at 10:30 am
on Monday, Wednesday or Friday and deliver the meals
to homebound individuals in the Grand Rapids area.
Each route takes about an hour and a half. We are
currently in need of volunteers to take permanent
weekly or bi-weekly shifts, fill in on shifts temporarily
for drivers who go south for the winter, or who are able
to take an “on-call” shift. If you are interested this

the parish on the weekends.
