Smoke Management Mitigation
Techniques

Biomass removal
Products: post/poles, hogg fuel, dowel wood, shavings, small saw
timber, chips, pellets, bio bricks, artificial logs, bio fuels, cellulostic
ethanol, char, essential oils, firewood, possible carbon credits

Utilization includes the use of the
whole tree

Removal of biomass is a cost due to
piece size

Biomass can be removed through force account
work, timber sales, stewardship contracts and
agreements, service contracts and permits- it
creates jobs!

To work at a Landscape Scale,
consider Mechanized Techniques
*Usually Timber Sales or
Stewardship
Contracts/Agreements
•Costs about $400/ac
•Machine piles are more cost
effective to utilize than hand piles
•Requires NEPA analysis for
ground disturbance
Cut-to-length harvestor

Bigger logs help pay for the
removal of the smaller logs

Other systems- Feller-Buncher,
Stroke Delimber, Grapple Skidder

Small Mechanized Methods: Hand
cut, ASV Deck, Firewood Removal

Small Mechanized Costs
$800/ac+- More
expensive than larger
mechanized treatments,
but the smaller equipment
is lighter on the land
Uses firewood removal as
a management tool, ie
fuels are mitigated, soil
impacts are minimized
Use of agreements
increases flexibility

How to develop or improve a
biomass utilization program
Develop and deliver a
sustainable supply so
industry can invest in
processing
infrastructure
Use partnerships and
collaborations to
secure public trust in
the work
