A Letter From Our Principal
Dear Eastvalley Family,
Wow! Only 3 ½ weeks left of school this year. Remember the last day for
students is Friday, May 21. We still have a lot of work to accomplish in
these last few weeks and everyone is continuing to work hard to get it done.
Our fifth graders are currently at Jekyll Island getting hands on instruction in
our oceans and animal habitats. Having been on this trip in the past, I can
tell you it is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our students. They are in
classes from 8 in the morning until after dark. I’m sure they will have a lot to
talk about when they return tomorrow night. I want to thank our current 5th
grade parents for working so hard to raise funds to make it easier for
everyone to afford the trip.
Karen Wacker, Principal
Relay for Life is May 7th at Jim Miller Park beginning with the survivor lap at 7:00 p.m. I invite all of you to come to
the event and celebrate with us. Cancer survivors from our own Eastvalley staff will be walking and we’d love for
everyone to be there to cheer them on! The luminary ceremony, lighting of candles for all those that have battled
cancer, begins at 10:00 p.m. and is my personal favorite of the entire event. It is a time for us to celebrate and
remember those friends and family who have been so courageous in their fight. Please come join us!! Email me if
you would like any more information. Also, if you are a cancer survivor, please go to www.cobbrelay.org and register
to join in the celebration!!
Please consider running for School Council for next year. You will find the application in this edition of the Eagle Eyes.
Please fill it out and return it by April 30 to the front office.
Parents Needed for School Council
Karen Wacker
Principal
An application for parents to submit to run for the Eastvalley School Council is located on page 11. Please give some
consideration to this service to our school. We need 3 parents (2 of whom are also business people) to fill the
vacancies for next year. Please fill out the application and return it by April 30 to the Eastvalley office. We will have
elections in May. All parents (except those who only have 5th grade students) are eligible for election to School
Council. The School Council meets once every 9 weeks to discuss issues of concern to Eastvalley. Please call Ms.
Wacker at 770-578-7214 if you have questions.
Principal for the Day
Kyle Dugan, a 3rd grader, spent Thursday, April 1, 2010 as
Principal of Eastvalley Elementary. Kyle won the raffle
drawing at the Friends and Family lunch and spent the day
shadowing Ms. Wacker as she completed her daily duties.
Kyle was on morning announcements, visited classrooms,
sat in the administrative meeting for the week, checked
emails, etc. Kyle said the day was a lot busier than he
thought it would be. Kyle even said he might think about
being a principal when he grows up! Kyle did a great job and
handled everything that came his way very professionally.
Eastvalley Teams Compete in
“Odyssey of the Mind” Tournament
Eastvalley’s Themed Banner “OoTM – Anything
Can Happen” - with Wizard Hat accessories
- came in FIRST PLACE in the Banner Contest
at the Regional Competition at Flowery Branch!
Eastvalley sent four teams to
compete in this year’s
Odyssey of the Mind
Tournament. Odyssey of the
Mind is a worldwide creative
problem-solving competition
for primary-school-aged
children through college. To
compete in the competition, a
team of 7 students must work
together to solve a “long-term”
problem, as defined by the
Odyssey of the Mind
problem captains, & must also
compete in a “spontaneous”
problem solving segment.
OM’s Fourth-Grade “Nature Trail’r” Team:
Caroline Singer, Tim Buchanan, Demilade
Adeoye, Anthony Sprigle, Brady Phillips, Sydney
Agans & Nicholas Aluisy
Each team worked tirelessly to
solve their long-term problem
in the form of a skit, & spent
countless hours practicing for
the spontaneous segment of
the competition. The
Odyssey of the Mind teams
OM’s Fourth-Grade “Discovered Treasures” began their practicing in
Team: Chezhey Lu, Ben Goodly, Zavier September of the school year.
Gebrayel, Charlie Zimmerman, Erik Larsen, The regional tournament was
Stephanie Gardiner and Radha Changela held in March. Eastvalley is
very proud of these 28 students! Many thanks go out to the Coaches and
Assistant Coaches for volunteering their time & efforts to guide these
children through the process and prepare them for the competition. We
would also like to thank the parents of these students for their support and
encouragement throughout this seven-month process.
OM’s Fourth-Grade “Food Court” Team:
Christopher Block, Nova Moffitt, Shannon
Murray, Mason Favro, Ty Scott, Hunter Kassens,
and Maggie Fleming
CONGRATULATIONS to our third-grade “Food Court” team, coached by
Melissa Chalker, and our three fourth-grade teams: “Discovered
Treasures”, coached by Sue Larsen & Stephanie Goodly; “Nature Trail’r”,
coached by Leslie Singer and Shari Sprigle; and “Food Court”, coached
by Bonny Block and Lisa Favro. The “Nature Trail’r” Team and 4th-grade
“Food Court” Team advanced, and also competed in the state finals on April
10 at Columbus State University. We are so proud of these students’ hard
work and accomplishments!
One final special thanks to Bonny Block for spearheading this effort at
Eastvalley over the past several years. An amazing life experience was
afforded these children as a result! Thank you so much! If your child is interested in joining an Eastvalley Odyssey of
the Mind Team, please look for more information to come your way as school re-opens in August, or contact any of the
coaches named above.
Third Graders are Surprised to Receive Personal Dictionaries!
The Rotary Club of Marietta and Southern Polytechnic State University have joined together to provide all
Eastvalley third graders with their own dictionary. Our students were surprised with their dictionaries early one
Thursday in March. The students were so excited to receive these personal dictionaries. They could be seen reading
these books in the hallways, at lunch, and even at recess. Dictionary skills are an integral part of the education for
third graders as students increase their vocabulary and explore new words. Many students have reported that they
are using the dictionaries for their homework and
more than once students have been seen using
their dictionaries in the classroom to enhance
their learning. Students and teachers would like
to extend a big “THANK YOU” to the Rotary Club
and Southern Poly Tech for helping students
become excited about learning and giving them
one more tool toward their success.
Eastvalley students are consistently getting closer to attaining our EVRC School-Wide-
The Total Points earned in March were 4,092. Our goal is definitely within sight! If everyone continues to try their best
on EVRC tests, it is very plausible that Eastvalley students will not only attain their school wide goal but set a new all
time record high of EVRC points earned!
Spring Photo Contest
Congratulations to the following students for their winning entries in Eastvalley’s Spring Photo Contest:
Newbery Awards
Students, it’s not too late to earn your Newbery Award. Remember, all you have to do is read ten Newbery Award books
and earn 80% or higher on your Accelerated Reading test. You may earn your Newbery Award over the course of your
time as a student at Eastvalley. When you accomplish this, please print off your EVRC student record and bring it to the
Media Center. You will earn a beautiful medal and have your name engraved on a perpetual plaque that will be
showcased in the Media Center. To date, we have five students who have earned this award this year. I sure would
love to add your name to the list! Happy Reading!
Dedicate-A-Book
The Eastvalley Media Staff would love to thank the follow
students and their families for their generous donation to
Eastvalley’s Dedicate-A-Book Program:
Mason and Caden Mamoun
Harrison Pyle
Charlie Zimmerman
Andrew Long
By donating ten dollars, you may have a book dedicated
in a student’s name, a family member, or in a friend’s
name. It is a wonderful birthday gift or to honor a loved
one. Your donation will be a lasting reminder of instilling
the love of reading in children. Thank you so much!
Spring Book Fair
Eastvalley’s Spring Book Fair was a huge success!
Eastvalley’s parents supported their children’s reading by
purchasing books from the Book Fair which is the Media
Center’s largest fund raiser. Even in a difficult economy,
Eastvalley experienced record breaking sales for the
Spring Book Fair of over $10,000.00. With the profits, the
Media Center will purchase new books and Accelerated
Reading tests for our students. The Media Staff is so appreciative
of your support!
Accelerated Reading Tests
The Media Center staff would like to thank the Eastvalley
PTA for its generous donation of $1,200.00 to the Media
Center to go towards technology. The Media Staff asked
the PTA if it would be alright to spend the money on
Accelerated Reading tests because no funding comes
from the state or from the county to purchase Accelerated
Music News
Reading tests. Usually the money is earned from the Book
Fair sales. With PTA approval, the Media Staff purchased
almost $1,900.00 of Accelerated Reading Tests from the
PTA gift and Book Fair sales. The Media Staff has been
able to accomplish their goal of having every fiction book
in the Media Center have an accompanying test. Now
students are choosing a book because they want to read
it, not because it has a test. Because more tests are
available, it is also easier for students to earn points for
Eastvalley’s EVRC Club. A huge thank you goes out to
Eastvalley’s awesome PTA for once again investing in the
education of our students! We appreciate you!
