My Dear Friends,
It is that exciting part of the year when we
enjoy good weather, parties, beaches,
barbecues and more. I indulged in my fair
share of fun by traveling to Goa to enjoy
good weather, parties, beaches and more.
Yes I got all of this plus a lot of rain and I
mean a lot. Fortunately, Goa did not have
any flooding like our neighbors in Pakistan
endured. Goa is truly a land you can
instantly call home! However, sadly, it is
changing so rapidly, with monstrous
concrete structures, adding to the dirt and
dump sites that come with unplanned infra
structures. This is certainly eroding the
peaceful ambience of our susegad goa!
I visited some of the facilities that your
charitable giving has reached i.e., Caritas
Goa, ASRO and Rachol Seminary to name a
few. Your contributions and donations are
being well spent and are greatly appreciated.
The priests and nuns I met have assured us of
their prayers for our members and their
families. They are eternally grateful for
money we send because of your generosity
and through the efforts of your executive and
planning committees. Every effort is made
to economically plan our events, so that we
can generate a small profit, which in turn
goes toward supporting the needy. I
encourage all of you to visit these charities
when you are in Goa, so you can see for
yourself, how your money is making a
difference.
By the time this
n e w s l e t t e r
reaches you, the
kids will have
gone back to
school and more importantly our teenagers
will have left for college. We at the Goan
Association of New Jersey wish them the
very best for a bright and successful year in
their educational pursuits. It is also time to
look forward to our Fall events: Whist Drive
on Sept 25 and Annual Retreat on Nov 7.
Expect a VERY SPECIAL Retreat this year,
because we were lucky to book Fr. Bill
Halbing, a well known and very charismatic
speaker. You can check out Fr Bill on
Youtube. Come for an unforgettable
experience. You won’t be disappointed. I
thank Dianne and the Caring Committee for
spending so much time researching, as well
as personally attending different
presentations, to ensure we have the very
best speaker for our Retreat.
Until then my friends, enjoy the rest of the
summer. I look forward to seeing you at the
Whist Drive and the Retreat.
GOANJ ANNUAL ADULT RETREAT
Teresa Cordeiro
Been a while since you’ve listened to a dynamic speaker! Come to the Goan Association of New Jersey’s annual
retreat on Sunday, November 7, 2010, at Our Lady of Peace Church in North Brunswick, NJ, and get a charge out of
Fr. Bill Halbing. Pastor of St. Antoninus Church, Newark, NJ since 1999, Fr. Bill has been active in the Charismatic
Renewal since 1975 and is a much sought after Bible teacher and preacher. He has been a guest speaker at national
charismatic conferences throughout the United States, Canada, Guyana, Philippines and Eastern Europe, preaching
the Word of God with enthusiasm and humor. Blessed with the gift of healing and holy insight, Fr. Bill offers weekly
Bible Studies at St. Antoninus Parish in Newark, Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Piscataway, and Sacred Heart Parish
in South Amboy. Through his topic, “Faith – Back to Basics,” Fr. Bill will challenge you with the truth that is made
known through the Bible. and the teachings of our faith. Don’t come to the retreat if you want to hear a watereddown,
souped-up version of how to live our Catholic faith. Come because you are curious enough to see what you’ve
been missing! Come because you’re courageous enough to re-learn the basics! Come and re-treat yourself!
Meet and greet fellowship from 1-2 pm, retreat from 2-5 pm, Mass at 5 pm, followed by dinner at 6 pm. Tickets are
$10 per person ($25 with dinner). For more information view the flyer on www.goanj.com or contact Dianne Nunes
at 609-395-8428/Valerie Moniz at 732-885-3330. Deadline is November 1, 2010.
The Sting of Peppercorns is a dazzling first
novel that presents the life of a family in
Goa, against the background of Goa’s fall to
India in 1961, after centuries of Portuguese
rule. This tale of love and tragedy is
written by Antonio Gomes, a goan
cardiologist at the Mount Sinai Medical
Center in New York.
YOUNG GOANS GET WET
Allan D’Guerra
Caribbean island.
Great fun, great food and lots of
splashing were plentiful at a pool
party hosted by our GOANJ VP,
who opened her home to the
Young Goans. where they feasted
on bajias, fajitas, burgers, hot
dogs, and other delicious faire to
temp the palate. The scene was
very picturesque as tiki torches
ringed the pool. and the weather,
a humid 90 degrees, helped make
us feel we were relaxing on a
In the water, a number of games were played such as volleyball and Marco Polo.
Unsuspecting full clothed Young Goans, who dared go near the waters edge, were also
dumped into the pool by mischievous youngsters. The group took advantage of the
opportunity to congregate at an outdoor jacuzzi, an experience which proved to be
especially soothing to the body. This memorable event, which went well into the night,
concluded with several rounds of the game, Mafia.
We are looking forward to more events in the fall, so we urge all Young Goans, and their
friends, to join the organization, comprised of goan Adults over 18. The group recently
reached a landmark by adding its 200th member. The purpose of the organization is to
provide opportunities to meet and network with people sharing our heritage, in an
informal and congenial atmosphere. To join Young Goans, you may contact Giselle Lopez
at glopez5678@yahoo.com or Allan D'Guerra at allandguerra@yahoo.com.
OUTREACH PROGRAMS
FOR GOANJ MEMBERS
Dianne Nunes
Our president, Felix Menezes, hand delivered three checks from the GOANJ while
on his recent trip to Goa this summer. The donations went to the ongoing
educational support of a seminarian at Rachol Seminary in the amount of $750, a
home for children with HIV/AIDS located in Tivim in the amount of $2275, and
$500 for desks and benches for a start-up school for poor Goan children in the small
village of Quelossim. We evaluate our profits from our events every year, and
donate half of that amount together with any extra funds we receive from raffles,
mass collections, and private donations.
We recently received a letter from the Archbishop of Goa, Most Reverend Filipe
Neri Ferrao, conveying his “… sentiments of deep appreciation and gratitude to all
the members of the Goan Association of New Jersey for supporting these projects.
I pray that God may bless all the members for their thoughtful generosity and
valuable help extended towards these three important causes in our Archdiocese. I
assure you the continued support of our prayers.”
The Caring Committee also extends deep appreciation for your continued support
toward these deserving causes, which are so important in defining our ties to our
homeland.
Prayerful Support
There is never a need too small, or a request seemingly insignificant, that can’t be
placed in prayer before our Lord asking Him to lend an ear for encouragement,
intervention, or support. The Prayer Team Partners are a dedicated and faithful
group, that will pray for any spiritual need that arises from members, their families
or friends of GOANJ. Over the years, we have felt the tears, handled the heartache
and rejoiced with gladness when our petitions have been answered. So please feel
welcomed to ask for prayers (anonymously if desired) by contacting either Valerie
or Dianne at valerie1moniz@optonline.net or diannenunes@verizon.net. May God
continue to bless each and every one of you as He welcomes your worship through
prayer.
