Calligraphy - The Art of
‘Beautiful Writing’
Calligraphy is an artistic discipline that combines
aesthetics and the written word. It can be extremely
relaxing after a hectic day. Artist and teacher, Bruce
Wiegand, will be teaching this 10 week class. His
professional background includes 20 years as a
graphic designer and almost 20 years as a high school
art teacher.
The first 5 weeks will emphasize history, tools,
lettering, and layout techniques. Students will be
introduced to three distinct calligraphic faces. The
second 5 weeks will be dedicated to using basic layout
techniques, and designing and producing at least 3
easy calligraphic works on a variety of papers. Broad
pen, ink, markers, and practice paper will be provided.
Supplementary useful tools will be discussed at the
first class.
The Watercolor Sketchbook
Learn how to create sketches of your travels, whether
they are to a distant place, or just down the street. We
will sketch a variety of subjects, which may include:
Landscapes, village scenes, boats, gardens, and figures
so that you will have the skills to sketch anywhere.
Tips will include: Choosing your subject, creating
interesting page layouts, and selecting materials for
sketching outdoors. Even if you have never drawn
or painted before, you will enjoy learning how to
record your experiences on paper. You will need to
bring a 2H or H drawing pencil, kneaded eraser, pencil
sharpener, round watercolor brush, watercolor paper
or a watercolor journal, paper towels, and a water
container. Paint will be provided. Instructor Helen
Kleczynski is a local fine artist who is known for both
her watercolor journals and her pastel paintings. She is
a signature member of the Pastel Society of America,
The Great Lakes Pastel Society, and the Plein Air
Artists of West Michigan. You may see her work at

bracelet), utilizing pearls, crystals, natural and semiprecious
stones for each person. Ages 11 – 17 + Adult
18 or older. Materials fee $10 per person. (CLASS:

Creating a Hand-Bound Journal
Learn how to mix color, shade objects with color
to create dimension, and use color to create better
compositions. You will also learn basic colored pencil
techniques for creating works of art. Although the
exercises will be done in colored pencil, the concepts
will apply to any medium. Prismacolor soft lead
pencils will be provided for classroom use. If you have
some of your own, you are welcome to bring them.
Please bring a sketchbook of your preference, (about
9” x 12”) along with some graphite drawing pencils, a
kneaded eraser, and a hand-held sharpener. All levels
of experience are welcome.
