BELVOIR CELEBRATES GCSE SUCCESS
Year 11 pupils waited in eager
anticipation for their GCSE results day on
24th August.
They were not disappointed when the
day finally arrived!
Belvoir High School recorded the second
best A* - C grades including English and
Maths across Leicestershire and
Rutland—an outstanding
achievement by the pupils and
reflects the dedication of their
teachers. Mr Sherwin said ’We
had a year when the school was
closed off but the children were
fantastic. The staff worked really
hard because they had little
preparation time for teaching
GCSEs. It’s a really rewarding
start with a good set of GCSE
results. We haven’t let the pupils
down and they haven’t let us
down. We are delighted with the
results’. Tara Deane picked up
nine A* and 2As, William
Foxall 5* and 5 As (pictured left
with the group), Gillian Watchorn
7A* 3As and a B, Hannah
Bateson picked up 5A* and 5As
whilst Kitty Broome gained 4A* and 5As,
Taylor.
OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC AMBASSADORS
Hello! Our names are Jasmin
Southam (left) and Claire Hopkins
(right) and we’re the area’s new gold
ambassadors. Our job is centred
around the inspiration and values that
the Olympic and Paralympic games
are promoting within our country.
Over the next couple of years we
hope to get as many people as
possible involved. We recently went
to Old Trafford cricket grounds to
attend a conference, together with
other young ambassadors, to learn
about how we can bring new ideas,
activities, and events into each of our
home surrounding areas. We met
athletes past and present who have
proudly represented our country by
training their best to achieve
excellence within their sport. These
amazing people excited and intrigued
us into thinking how we could make a
difference in promoting the games
and feeding the same enthusiasm into
the school and nearby schools. Over
the next two years, we hope to
support events and young people to
improve and excel in their sport(s)
whilst planning and creating brand
new activities to get everyone joining
in with the excitement that our country
has been blessed with for 2012! As
the Belvoir and Melton gold
ambassadors, we need help within
the secondary schools, so there will
be two administrators in each
secondary school who will lead,
manage, and create new
opportunities for the pupils. The two
of us try and target the wider
community, bringing all the hard work
together. Creating new
correspondence with the schools
within the Partnership is something
that is a special and a fantastic
opportunity for the Belvoir/Melton area
to enjoy and will be rewarded with
Director of Education visits Belvoir
We were pleased to welcome Leicestershire’s Director of Education
(CYPS) Mr Gareth Williams who visited in early September.
The main purpose of his visit was to congratulate the school on
our excellent GCSE results and on achieving an ’Outstanding’
judgement from Ofsted inspectors before the summer break.
Mr Williams also had a secondary, more personal reason for the
visit. He played a crucial role in securing the funding from central
government which enabled Belvoir High School’s transition to 11-
16. This was his first visit since the completion of the building programme
here and it was especially pleasing for everyone that his
visit was on an occasion when the school had so much to celebrate.
OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC AMBASSADORS Continued from page 1
positive, fun opportunities for everyone to get involved with.
After achieving the gold ambassador role a selected few in
each area are chosen to become Platinum Ambassadors
whose job it is to support the gold ambassadors and offer
information, connections, ideas and advice to them about
new programs that could be introduced. Presently, we have
no Platinum Ambassadors in our Belvoir/Melton area so our
Head of PE, Mrs Lloyd, will guide us and have an input upon
our ideas.
For the Olympic and Paralympics organisers to
have come up with the idea of generating the fun and
excitement from young people like us in our communities
across Britain, is a great way to enforce creativity and
fun into the current, difficult time. The next two years is
a once in a lifetime chance to welcome the Olympic and
Paralympic games into our lives and to learn from the
values and commitment shown by the fine athletes we
have, as well as our athletes of the future.
CASHLESS CATERING
Almost a month since introducing a cash
card system in the school dining room,
we have now gone totally cashless, (well
almost – we still have to convert the
vending machine - unfortunately a
technical glitch has caused a problem,
hopefully soon to be solved). The result
has been astounding; the queues have
moved a lot quicker, meaning that pupils
get their food faster and it’s hotter. We
cannot rest on our laurels however, a
fuller understanding of how the card
works and what is possible to achieve
with it needs to be spelt out to the pupils.
It is the aim of the catering department
to ensure that ALL pupils have an
understanding of nutrition and balanced
diet and how the cards can help us
achieve this.
Parents will also be pleased to see that
they will be able (in the fullness of time)
to get a report on what their children are
eating on a daily basis, and if they are at
all concerned about their child’s diet they
are welcome to call the catering
manager at the school to discuss their
concerns. The cards also help pupils to
understand how to manage their
money as very often a spend limit is
specified by parents, carers or
guardians, by doing this it is hoped that
pupils will choose to get the best value
for money by taking advantage of
special offers but most importantly how
to make their money last over the three
sessions of breakfast, break and lunch
without going over their spend limit.
So, what are we doing now to make
dining in school more interesting Well,
a number of things – at present we are
selling a flavoured milk, good for
protein and calcium but what is
probably more interesting for the pupils
is that every carton purchased gives
them the opportunity of winning the
latest iPod. We have just had a themed
week titled “A TRIP ACROSS
EUROPE” each day having a different
menu from a specific country. Just
before half term end we shall be having
a Chinese day to mark the visit of
some of the staff to a partner school in
China, We can also look forward to
Halloween, a Bonfire banquet, as well
as an African themed day. To round
off the year we will again be having a
Christmas fayre lunch for all to enjoy.
As you can see, it is full steam ahead
and that is not all, we are also looking
to re-introduce our “BIN IT TO WIN
IT” incentive to keep the litter around
the school to a minimum (also to
point out to pupils that litter is not
socially acceptable). All paper plates
and cardboard cups that are
deposited in the marked containers –
must have pupils name and form
written on them - will be entered into
a draw at the end of term to win a
£30 voucher. We are even prepared
to accept a “MESSAGE IN A
BOTTLE” – a name and form written
on a slip of paper and placed in the
empty bottle will also be put into the
draw. Not only will the pupils have a
chance to win a great prize but will
also benefit from a cleaner and tidier
school environment.

Graduate Returns to Belvoir
Ex pupil, Adam Thornton returned to
Belvoir High School for a morning this
term – fifteen years after he first
started at the school! Following his
High School education here at Belvoir,
he went on to become the top student
in Year 13 at King Edward VII School
(2002) achieving four A levels at grade
A and seven AS levels; accumulating
an astonishing 580 UCAS points.
He then went on to study at
Magdalene College, Cambridge
successfully completing his Masters in
Engineering (MEng) and joins a
college Alumni including Samuel
Pepys, Gavin Hastings and George
Mallory.
Adam was keen to retrace the steps
that started his learning journey and
gave his time generously to the pupils
he met whilst visiting.
He was greatly impressed with both the
teaching and learning here at Belvoir
and the physical environment in which
that learning takes place. He also very
much enjoyed catching up with past
teaching staff!
Adam will now take a year out –
perhaps to enjoy some of his social
pursuits which include gliding and
Formula One.
Former pupil Adam Thornton with current year 11
pupils Ben Copley and Jonathan Walker.
MELTON VALE POST 16 CENTRE - MV16
An update from Mr Sherwin
Parents and young people can be
forgiven for feeling ‘a tad’ confused
about what is happening about post-
16 education in Melton and The Vale
given the furore and mixed messages
portrayed in the local press. This is
what is going to happen.
MV16 will open in September 2011. It
will be staffed by the teachers who
delivered the excellent A Level results
at KE7 this year and the head of that
centre, as far as day to management
is concerned, will be the current
Principal at KE7, Mr Tony Pinnock.
Although the students will be registered at
Belvoir High School, to all intents and
purposes they will be MV16 students. The
centre will be governed by the Governing
Body of Belvoir High School who will also
employ the staff. I will be overall Principal
and as such will be ultimately responsible
for standards and results.
The details of how this will work in practice
are almost finalised and I will inform you
about them in due course. I have already
expanded the senior leadership team at
Belvoir and redesignated roles within that
team to ensure that my involvement at
MV16 does not have a negative Impact on
Belvoir High School where I will still be the
Principal / Headteacher.
MV16 is purpose built to deliver post-16
education and to cater specifically for the
requirements of young people aged 16-19.
The environment is modern and I think, quite
awe inspiring. The curriculum is exciting and
offers a range of options for young people.
Open Evenings and an Open Day are
already scheduled: November 3rd 5.30pm –
8.30pm
January 27th 5.30pm – 8.30pm
January 29th Do come along, have a look
and talk to the staff. 10am – 1pm
STUNNING 6 th FORM RESULTS
The 6 th Form at KE7 celebrated its best ever A Level results this summer. Taken as a whole, they were the second best
in Leicestershire and Leicester City. Furthermore, at the higher grades of A*-B, their results were the best! Achievement
at this level is vital for students wanting to progress to university.

International Week 2010
The week beginning the 21 st September
was International week at Belvoir and all
sorts of cultural and linguistic activities
took place. All departments in the
school got involved to make it a truly
whole-school event. Here is a round up
of some of the subject areas and their
international activities:
Science Year 7 MW (+ other science
groups) researched Spanish musical
instruments and then used materials
from home and school to make them.
They then performed in groups! (7MW
had Miss Steer & Mr White in the
audience). We then linked their work to
pitch/volume and types of sound made
relating to Science.
Year 9 tested different materials to
decide which would be suitable for a
World Cup football shirt – linked to
Spain winning the World Cup this year.
Year 8 (Group 3) compared the energy
content of Spanish foods and British
foods.
Art Year 8 produced death masks as
part of their work on the Mexican Day of
the Dead festival.
RE Department We wanted to
consider other cultures and the most
important aspects of RE; the perfect
topic for us, therefore, was El Dia de
los Muertos – The Mexican Day of the
Dead! Pupils reflected upon how we
approach and deal with death
compared with how a Hispanic country
does. Pupils found that while we might
tend to shy away from death and dying,
Mexicans embrace and celebrate it!
The pupils then set about designing
posters that would encourage hesitant
British tourists to visit Mexico during
their celebrations. The work they
produced was colourful, engaging and
full of creativity.
Food Technology/Catering As part of
our yeast and bread baking project Year
9 explored pizzas using what they have
learned so far to prepare the base. They
then added their own ingredients to make
unique pizzas.
Year 10 prepared and presented curry
dishes using combinations of spices. We
discussed various accompaniments such
as rice and naan breads used in cultures
where curries are regularly eaten.
PSHCE The year 7s enjoyed exploring
European countries, as they completed a
team challenge involving finding facts
about the countries they ‘visited’ whilst
working against the clock.
History In History pupils studied the
causes and impact of the Spanish Civil
War. The bombing of Guernica was
looked at as a case study, and after
examining the evidence pupils produced
an anti-war poster in the style of Picasso.
Design Technology Year 10 pupils have
been studying various Spanish artists/
designers and designing new products in
their chosen designer/artist’s style.
English Year 7s wrote a poem about
where in world they would like to visit
as part of an autobiography.
Music Studying and trying out Chinese
Music with Year 7 and Tango with Year
11.
Geography Pupils studied; rivers with
Y7, Chile earthquake with Y8,
development in Brazil with Y9,
population with Y10 and natural
hazards with Y11.
Dance In Dance lessons pupils learnt
how to do a Bollywood dance and
completed their experience with the
opportunity to learn how to dress
themselves in a traditional Indian sari.
Maths Pupils compared the climate
between London and Chengdu (graphs
etc) and the population density of
European countries and UK/China.
Some groups also completed
a questionnaire on how we spend our
day compared with other countries.
Drama Pupils in Year 7 studied the
Maori theme using film Whale Rider
and the Haka dance, Year 8 had an
African theme using Stomp to create a
gum boot dance and Year 9 studied
Commedie del’Arte, an Italian 15 th
century drama using stick characters.
ICT With Mr. Bennett going to China
with other teachers in October, the ICT
department worked on various pieces
of work to take to China with them
including producing short movies/
PowerPoint presentations showcasing
Belvoir High School and what it’s like to
be a student in the UK.
European Day of Languages
This annual event which takes place in
countries across Europe celebrates the
hundreds of languages that exist in the
world. The Languages department at
Belvoir celebrated this event as part of the
wider International Week activities and
many different events took place including
trips out of school, visits to school from
outside speakers, Salsa, Tango and
Bollywood dancing, treasure hunts,
quizzes, and language tasters in Spanish,
Japanese, Chinese and German!
Year 10 Chinese culture and language
lesson
On Tuesday 21 st September Miss Allen’s
Year 10 class had a change from their
usual French lesson with a Chinese
lesson instead! They were taught by Mrs.
Chen, a native Chinese speaker who lives
in Bottesford. The informative and
interesting talk included information on the
different languages spoken in China and
the origins of the intricate and beautiful
Chinese calligraphy. The Year 10s had a
go at speaking some greetings in
Mandarin and then practised writing some
Chinese symbols

International Week 2010 (continued)
Year 9 visit to Nottingham Forest
On Thursday 23 rd September in the
afternoon 14 Year 9 pupils
accompanied by Miss Allen, Miss
Grassiot and Mrs Lloyd travelled to the
Nottingham Forest football stadium to
have a tour of the stadium and to
interview one of the team’s players in
French. This is the 3 rd year we have
organised a visit with Nottingham
Forest football club and it was
interesting this year for our pupils to
have the opportunity to visit the
Stadium and to meet Guy Moussi who
has played at Forest since 2008.
Grace Pilcher of 9RA says: “We got to
meet one of the French footballers from
Nottingham Forest and a French
Academy player. We used our French
skills by talking to real French people.
We got to see all of their trophies, plus
we got a goody bag with Nottingham
Forest gifts!”.
Miss Allen, Head of MFL, says: “It was
a fantastic opportunity for pupils to use
their French skills in a real context by
interviewing a French footballer. It was
also a great chance for them to practise
public speaking and to learn more
about the main differences between
French and English culture.”
Year 8 visit to Nottingham Trent
University
On Monday 27 th September 10 year 8
pupils travelled to Nottingham Trent
University for their annual European day
of Languages celebration with 7 other
schools from the Nottingham and
Leicester area. The pupils learnt about the
importance of language-learning relating
to their future careers, had a taster
session of Japanese and got the
opportunity to chat to some international
students about their experiences of
languages and of studying in England.
After lunch the pupils then took part in a
piñata competition which proved very
competitive! Big thanks to the pupils who
all behaved impeccably and were
excellent ambassadors of the school.
Thank you to all the pupils and staff who
worked really hard during this week,
including the canteen staff for their trek
through Europe with many tasty dishes
from different European countries.
CAREERS
The photo shows Sgt Helen Wright, Aircraft Technician
Mechanical in the RAF, with James Malins, Y11 student and
the Careers Adviser, Ms Kay Harness.
Sgt Wright talked about her role and life in the RAF, the
aircraft she works on and the countries she has visited. As
well as discussing entry requirements and what is involved
in the initial training. This presentation forms part of the
‘Speaker Programme’ set up by Kay Harness for both KS4
and KS3. The photograph was taken by Jack Altham, a
Year 11 student at Belvoir High School.
BTEC DANCE
In September this year Belvoir High School introduced
BTEC First Performing Arts (Dance) to the curriculum.
Fifteen students started this two year course and have
the option to gain a First Certificate (2 GCSE’s) or a
Diploma (4 GCSE’s) in their subject.
Dance has been successful over the past two years and
is available to all students with our lunchtime clubs,
productions and now, BTEC course.
Picture shows pupils performing in a Dance Festival
earlier this year.

GCSE Science Information
In January all pupils in Years 10 and
11 will be completing a GCSE science
module worth 25% of their course.
The exam board we use is AQA.
Year 10 To prepare for the Physics
Unit 1 exam all Year 10 pupils will be
completing a mock exam on 16 th
November during their Science
lesson. This mock exam will comprise
of past exam questions. It is important
that the pupils prepare thoroughly for
this mock exam in order to find out
which areas of the Physics 1 unit they
have understood and the areas which
they need to continue to improve.
The actual external GCSE Physics
Unit 1 exam will take place on
Wednesday 19 th January. This is a
45 minute exam paper worth 25% of
the GCSE Core Science course or
25% of GCSE Physics (Triple Science
pupils).
Year 11 To prepare for the Chemistry
Unit 2 exam all Year 11 pupils will
complete a mock exam during Year 11
mock exam week (week beginning
22 nd November). This mock exam will
comprise of past exam questions. It is
important that the pupils prepare
thoroughly for this mock exam in order
to find out which areas of the
Chemistry 2 unit they have understood
and the areas they need to continue to
improve.
The actual external GCSE
Chemistry Unit 2 exam will take
place on Monday 17 th January. This
is a 45 minute exam paper worth 25%
of the GCSE Additional Science
course or 25% of GCSE Chemistry
(Triple Science pupils).
Revision: As parents/guardians what
can you do to support your son/
daughters revision
First, you can help your son/daughter
put together an exam revision timetable
using a calendar – or even make one!
They really need to have this organised
before the Christmas break so that they
have started their revision by the time
they come back to school in January.
Secondly, all of the pupils have a
Science revision guide that has been
loaned to them this year. Pupils can use
this as well as their exercise books to
plan their revision and use these
resources to revise from.
Thirdly, it is really important that pupils
practice the skills of answering exam
style questions. Pupils can visit the VLE
Science subject area on the Belvoir
High School website where there are
links to the AQA website, containing
many exam papers. Pupils can either
answer the questions on a separate
piece of paper or print the exam papers.
I have included the links below:
For Biology exam papers:
http://web.aqa.org.uk/qual/newgcses/
science/new/bio_materials.php
id=03&prev=03
For Chemistry exam papers:
http://web.aqa.org.uk/qual/newgcses/
science/new/chem_materials.php
id=03&prev=03
For Physics exam papers:
http://web.aqa.org.uk/qual/newgcses/
science/new/physics_materials.php
id=03&prev=03
You can help further by timing your son/
daughter or helping them to organise
the questions to match the different
areas of the course.
Fourth, in order to revise successfully,
pupils need to find revision styles that
suit them. There are very few people
who successfully revise by just reading
the information. They need to be
‘actively’ revising. The pupils will need
lots of paper to make notes, draw/label
diagrams, make spider diagrams or
make revision cards. A few may find
that recording themselves talking and
listening back to the information
numerous times works for them!
Students are also likely to need a place
that is quiet and free from distractions in
order to revise successfully. Generally,
many pupils find that 30-40 minutes is a
good length of time for concentrating
followed by a short break.
There are many revision websites that
pupils may find useful; I have added
website links to a few of them on the
VLE. For example:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/
gcsebitesize/science/
www.samlearning.com (All of the pupils
have a username and password to
access this revision website.)
Good luck Year 10 and 11!
DESIGN TECHNOLOGY
DT students in Year 9 have been
challenged to make a working
model of a gramophone as part of
their audio amplifier
project. Thanks to student Ross
Breedon, who was able to bring in
his granddad’s gramophone, the
group were able to see a real
gramophone playing an old 78rpm
record as part of their research.
HELP FOR HEROES CONCERT
Six Belvoir High School pupils gave up their time to
prepare for a Help For Heroes Concert in St Mary’s
Church Bottesford on Saturday September 18 th . They
gave outstanding performances and were a real credit
to the school. Belvoir High School is very proud of their
achievement and congratulates them on their success.
A big thank you and well done goes to the following
students: Hannah Dixon, Charlotte Fowler, Elizabeth
Jones, Emily Lyons, Emily Snow and Hannah Tomkins.

Schools Fantasy Football
Belvoir High School has entered the
Schools Fantasy Football League
(SFFL).
You have the opportunity to select and
manage a team of Premier League
footballers and compete against your fellow pupils, teachers
and parents for trophies, medals and certificates.
Follow your team's progress over the nine-month season in
your school league. Your players will score points based on
their performance in their real life premiership matches each
week. All players score points for goals and assists.
Goalkeepers and defenders earn points for clean sheets, but
lose points for goals conceded.
We are hoping that lots of parents will sign up too!
By taking part too you'll find yourselves involved in discussions
about budgets and how much you have to purchase on a new
striker each month! Your son/daughter may not realise they're
learning key maths skills but it will be immediately apparent to you
Taking part in SFFL provides a common interest for you and your
child. You will be actively involved in something they are
participating in. SFFL will be one of the main topics of
conversation for many months!
There are exciting monthly and weekly quizzes to enter with great
prizes.
It’s not too late to sign up if you would like to play. See Mrs Smith
with your £3.50 entry fee as soon as possible.
PE Summer Term 2010 Roundup
The summer term was an extremely busy
one for PE at Belvoir. We have hosted
various events for the primary schools
including: Vale Primary athletics, Vale
Primary Cricket and 3 Key Stage 1 multiskills
festivals. In addition to this we have
also organised a primary school tennis
festival at Hose Tennis Club and assisted
Hose Primary School with their sports
week.
At each and every one of the above mentioned
primary festivals, we have had an
army of Y9 and Y10 leaders helping out.
Whilst these events are all very important
for the primary schools they are fantastic
opportunities for our older pupils to gain
leadership experience. The skills the pupils
develop when taking part in such
events go far beyond PE. It has been
amazing to see so many of them develop
into really superb leaders and it was hard
to believe that most of them were only 14!
They have been a real credit to themselves
and to the school. I have had
numerous emails from primary school
colleagues complimenting our pupils on
how well they have done. Well done
leaders!
We have also been busy taking part in
lots of sporting activity ourselves. The
start of the half term saw many of our
pupils taking part at Area Sports with
many of them going on to represent the
area at County Sports. The Leicestershire
and Rutland Youth Games were
held at Loughborough University on Sun
27 th June with a number of our pupils
taking part. On June 28 th the whole of
Y7 were involved in a tennis festival at
Hose tennis club – again assisted by
our fantastic Y9 and 10 leaders. June
29 th was our in house sports day which
saw about 80% of our pupils taking part.
It was a fantastic day with some superb
performances!
We look forward to continuing and building
on these successes during this year.
