Extension Activities<br />

Administer the Criterion Referenced<br />

Assessment for this unit.<br />

• Invite a resource person to make a presentation<br />

to the students about the traditional Native<br />

roles that members of the family played. The<br />

resource person should bring concrete materials<br />

(such as men’s/women’s tools) to enhance<br />

the presentation.<br />

• Draw or cut out simple illustrations that show<br />

the different stages of growth - from baby to<br />

elder. The drawings should be mixed-up on the<br />

page. Provide each student with a copy of the<br />

page, a pair of scissors, glue and art paper.<br />

The students should cut out the illustrations<br />

and glue them on their art paper, in their correct<br />

order (from baby to elder). Display the students’<br />

work in the classroom or hallway.<br />

or<br />

• Provide each student with a sheet of art<br />

paper, scissors, glue and old magazines/catalogs.<br />

The students should find pictures that<br />

they can use to show the sequence from<br />

“baby” to “adult.” The students should glue<br />

their pictures on their art paper - from youngest<br />

to oldest. Display the completed art.<br />

• Introduce and practice the unit’s dialog with<br />

the students. Be certain that the students<br />

understand the meanings of the sentences in<br />

the dialog. Practice the dialog in choral, group<br />

and individual forms.<br />

Grade 4 - Grade 6<br />

• Provide each student with popsicle sticks,<br />

glue, art paper and scissors. The students<br />

should then cut out small circles of the art<br />

paper to create “heads” of their family members;<br />

they should glue the “heads” to the tops<br />

of the popsicle sticks. When finished, create a<br />

“families” display in the classroom or hallway.<br />

• Provide each student with a sheet of art<br />

paper, scissors, glue and old magazines/catalogs.<br />

The students should find pictures that<br />

they can use to show the sequence from<br />

“baby” to “adult.” The students should glue<br />

their pictures on their art paper - from youngest<br />

Sentence in the dialog and then, say the dialog<br />

with you (you say the A parts and the students<br />

say the B parts).<br />
