TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE The Transportation Committee aims to help BIAs tackle the issues of public transit, traffic and parking. TOURISM COMMITTEE STATE OF THE UNION • Promote Toronto BIAs as Tourist destinations. • Build relationships and develop awareness of BIAs as Tourist destinations, with government Tourism departments, Toronto Tourism agencies and Tourist publications. • Be prepared to quickly participate in joint promotion or marketing initiatives when there is opportunity. • Educate BIAs to target the tourist market by including a “Tourism Experience” in their events and promotions. CURRENT TOURISM COMMITTEE PROJECTS • Arranging for BIA information to be included on visitor maps, directories and websites. • Participating in joint promotion initiatives with Toronto Tourism, City of Toronto. • Developing a relationship with the Tourism Division of the City’s Economic Development Department. • Extending our Tourist definition to include those that live in Toronto by encouraging Torontonians to visit Toronto’s diverse neighbourhoods. • Entering joint partnerships with Tourism Marketing agencies to provide rate reduction benefits to BIA’s. • Investigating Tourism Marketing Seminars for BIA Boards and Staff as part of a professional development program. • Encouraging all BIAs to include “grass roots programs” to tidy up their areas as a part of their Beautification Initiatives. COMMITTEE ACCOMPLISHMENTS • Facilitated a 37.5% reduction in Tourism Toronto Annual Membership Fees for all BIAs. The new rate of $449 has been guaranteed for the next three years. (see page 21 for details). • The Cavalcade of Lights program continued to gain momentum with 19 BIAs participating in 2006. 16
