About Dance for PD® This popular class has been offered at the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn since 2001 & is appropriate for anyone with PD, no matter how advanced. No dance experience is required. In chairs, at a barre or standing, you will explore elements of modern dance, ballet, tap, folk and social dancing in a non-pressured, social environment in which live music energizes, enriches and empowers. Classes are modeled after Dance for PD® now occur in more than 100 communities throughout the world… now including Pittsburgh. Why Dance for PD® It has been well established that exercise is essential in the management of Parkinson disease. Although the class is “exercise” in nature, it includes additional benefits not found in a more typical exercise class. Participants report that Dance for PD provides: • Physical/motor benefits Exercise has been shown to improve symptom management without additional medication therapy. Dance develops flexibility and instills confidence in movement ability, areas particularly impacted by PD. Dance focuses attention on eyes, ears and touch as tools to assist in movement and balance. Dance also increases awareness of where all parts of the body are in space. It is appropriate for all levels of ability and mobility. • Cognitive benefits All people with PD experience some cognitive impairment in addition to motor impairment. Dance is first and foremost a stimulating mental activity that connects mind to body. Dance in this form is a type of “brain training”. Complex movement is thought to be instrumental in neuroplasticity or the ability of the brain to construct new neural pathways to replace damaged connections. • Psychosocial benefits Parkinson disease is often referred to as the “disease of isolation”. Dance breaks isolation. More than most other types of exercise, Dance for PD requires interaction between participants. It sparks creativity and expression of feelings through movement in the stories told in dance. It helps dispel negative self-image by invoking imagery in the service of graceful movement. The essence of dance is joy which can reverse (even if only transiently) feelings of depression and anxiety that are a very real part of PD. Participants also reported that the classes boost their confidence levels and transform their attitudes about living with a chronic illness by empowering them with a sense of physical possibility and artistic achievement.
