Sustainability: A Moving Target<br />

Ec<strong>on</strong>omic, Social, Cultural, Ethical, and Envir<strong>on</strong>mental Issues in <strong>the</strong><br />

Time of Ec<strong>on</strong>omic Recessi<strong>on</strong><br />

The fourth year of <strong>the</strong> annual internati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>scientific</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ference of <strong>the</strong> City University/Vysoká<br />

škola manažmentu (VŠM) “<strong>Management</strong> Challenges in <strong>the</strong> 21 st Century” took place in<br />

Bratislava <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> 25th April 2012. The c<strong>on</strong>ference was organized in cooperati<strong>on</strong> with <strong>the</strong> US<br />

Embassy in Slovakia. Thematically, it was focused <strong>on</strong> sustainability questi<strong>on</strong>s in time of<br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omic recessi<strong>on</strong>. The aim of <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ference was to raise an academic discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong><br />

different facets of sustainability issues and its new perspectives brought forward by <strong>the</strong><br />

recent global ec<strong>on</strong>omic crisis which have not been thoroughly investigated yet. The<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ference objective was to encourage interdisciplinary c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s from different fields of<br />

applicati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> principles of sustainability in view of <strong>the</strong> ec<strong>on</strong>omic recessi<strong>on</strong> and upcoming<br />

challenges of 21 st century. It highlighted namely <strong>the</strong> ec<strong>on</strong>omic, social, cultural, ethical and<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>mental focus. Specific topics discussed during <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ference were linked with<br />

financial aspects of sustainability, sustainability problems related to marketing and<br />

management in <strong>the</strong> time of crisis and recessi<strong>on</strong>, c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> of knowledge management to<br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omic sustainability, hot topics in social, ethical and cultural sustainability, envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />

sustainability and relati<strong>on</strong>ship to transportati<strong>on</strong> and logistics.<br />

The c<strong>on</strong>ference was opened by prof. Ing. Soňa Ferenčíková, PhD., <strong>the</strong> vice-rector of VŠM<br />

for science, investigati<strong>on</strong> and development and a member of <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ference organizati<strong>on</strong><br />

committee. Professor Ferenčíková welcomed all <strong>the</strong> participants and highlighted <strong>the</strong> main<br />

objectives of <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ference. In <strong>the</strong> following speech, Dr.h.c. prof. MUDr. Branislav<br />

Lichardus, Dr.Sc., <strong>the</strong> rector of VŠM, who pointed out various aspects of sustainability in<br />

nowadays’ society and ec<strong>on</strong>omy. The opening cerem<strong>on</strong>y was <strong>the</strong>n c<strong>on</strong>cluded by H. E.<br />

Theodore Sedgwick, <strong>the</strong> US ambassador in Slovakia, who emphasized timeliness of <strong>the</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>ference focus and appreciated c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> cooperati<strong>on</strong> between Slovakia and <strong>the</strong><br />

United States of America.<br />

The plenary sessi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ference was held in <strong>the</strong> morning hours. The introductory<br />

presentati<strong>on</strong> was given by doc. Dr. Ing. Menbere Workie Tiruneh, PhD. from VŠM and <strong>the</strong><br />

Ec<strong>on</strong>omic Institute of <strong>the</strong> Slovak Academy of Science (SAV), who addressed current<br />

questi<strong>on</strong>s of debt sustainability and ec<strong>on</strong>omic growth in <strong>the</strong> EU. The sec<strong>on</strong>d speaker m. prof.<br />

PhDr. M<strong>on</strong>ika Šestáková, DrSc. from VŠM presented a <strong>the</strong>matically linked paper focused <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> financial sector and <strong>the</strong> sustainability of ec<strong>on</strong>omic growth. Next, Ing. Andrej Piovarči,<br />

PhD. announced <strong>the</strong> winners of <strong>the</strong> students' competiti<strong>on</strong> of VŠM „Best Student Paper“. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d part of <strong>the</strong> plenary sessi<strong>on</strong>, presentati<strong>on</strong>s were given by invited foreign guests.<br />

Assoc. Prof. Michael Pitts, PhD. from Virginia Comm<strong>on</strong>wealth University, currently staying at<br />

City University in Bratislava as a Fulbright scholar, analyzed issues related to piracy and<br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omic sustainability in <strong>the</strong> V4 countries. Assoc. Prof. Tracey Tuten, Ph.D. from College of<br />

Business in East Caroline University focused <strong>on</strong> social networks and <strong>the</strong>ir role in human<br />

resources management. The plenary sessi<strong>on</strong> was c<strong>on</strong>cluded by a presentati<strong>on</strong> of doc. Ing.<br />

Mária Tajtáková, PhD. from VŠM which addressed <strong>the</strong> arts participati<strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong> times of<br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omic recessi<strong>on</strong>.


In <strong>the</strong> afterno<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ference c<strong>on</strong>tinued in three parallel secti<strong>on</strong>s. Within <strong>the</strong> Secti<strong>on</strong> I –<br />

Ec<strong>on</strong>omic and financial aspects of sustainability (chairpers<strong>on</strong>s doc. Workie, m. prof.<br />

Šestáková) – papers discussed <strong>the</strong> topics of debt sustainability, financial markets, ec<strong>on</strong>omic<br />

growth, investments, payment discipline and socio-ec<strong>on</strong>omic c<strong>on</strong>text of sustainability. In <strong>the</strong><br />

Secti<strong>on</strong> II – Sustainability problems related to marketing and management in <strong>the</strong> time of<br />

crisis and recessi<strong>on</strong>/C<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> of knowledge management to ec<strong>on</strong>omic sustainability<br />

(chairpers<strong>on</strong>s Dr. Jozef Šimúth, Dr. Andrej Piovarči, prof. Jozef Hvorecký) – presenters<br />

focused <strong>on</strong> questi<strong>on</strong>s related to sustainability of human resources management, crosscultural<br />

research <strong>on</strong> careers, educati<strong>on</strong> with <strong>the</strong> emphasis <strong>on</strong> e-learning, relati<strong>on</strong>ship<br />

between higher educati<strong>on</strong> and knowledge ec<strong>on</strong>omy indicators, as well as importance of IT<br />

systems for sustainability of different sectors of <strong>the</strong> nati<strong>on</strong>al ec<strong>on</strong>omy. The Secti<strong>on</strong> III – Hot<br />

topics in social, cultural and ethical sustainability/Envir<strong>on</strong>mental sustainability and a<br />

relati<strong>on</strong>ship to transportati<strong>on</strong> and logistics (chairpers<strong>on</strong>s doc. Tajtáková, doc. Hansenová) –<br />

covered papers dealing with social risks in insurance, crisis management, media and<br />

corporate social resp<strong>on</strong>sibility, survival of cultural organizati<strong>on</strong>s during <strong>the</strong> crisis, and various<br />

aspects of envir<strong>on</strong>mental sustainability, in particular <strong>the</strong> price impact of transacti<strong>on</strong> cost,<br />

partnerships in logistics, n<strong>on</strong>-rival producti<strong>on</strong> factors and <strong>the</strong> carb<strong>on</strong> footprint.<br />

In total, 50 papers by 49 participants were accepted by <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ference committee. The<br />

authors come from 12 universities, 3 companies, 4 countries (<strong>the</strong> USA, <strong>the</strong> Russian<br />

Federati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Czech republic and <strong>the</strong> Slovak republic). From <strong>the</strong> total amount of accepted<br />

papers, 29 <strong>on</strong>es were pers<strong>on</strong>ally presented at <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ference in three parallel secti<strong>on</strong>s. The<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ference proceedings with full papers have been published in <strong>the</strong> electr<strong>on</strong>ic form (CD) and<br />

are available in <strong>the</strong> VŠM library.<br />

The c<strong>on</strong>ference was c<strong>on</strong>cluded by <strong>the</strong> rector of VŠM Dr.h.c. prof. MUDr. Branislav Lichardus,<br />

Dr.Sc., who thanked all <strong>the</strong> participants as well as <strong>the</strong> organizers of <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ference and<br />

announced <strong>the</strong> up-coming 5th year of <strong>the</strong> VŠM c<strong>on</strong>ference “<strong>Management</strong> Challenges in <strong>the</strong><br />

21 st Century 2013“.<br />
