Nikkei Concerns
President’s
Message
By Carol Suehiro, President,
Board of Directors
Summertime is about community.
Taking advantage of lengthened daylight
and immersed in the warmth of
sunshine, we enjoy community
festivals, fairs and picnics. Reveling in
activity, we are proud to be part of a
community. These groups become the
center of our attention.
Community is often defined as a
group of individuals with a common
interest within a geographical area.
Issei Concerns was such an
organization. It was fostered by a group
of individuals with a common bond to
care for the elderly Issei, predominantly
living in Central Seattle. Today Nikkei
Concerns continues to be a community
organization, developed and sustained
by that community to serve primarily
elderly Nikkei.
Over the years our physical
boundaries have extended way beyond
Central Seattle. Services have
expanded beyond skilled nursing care.
Most people will not need skilled
nursing care, but may require some
type of assistance in daily living. It is
for this reason Nikkei Concerns has
evolved into an organization addressing
senior needs in other capacities such as
Kokoro Kai, Nikkei Horizons and
Nikkei Manor Assisted Living. The
demands and needs of the elderly are
in continual change as the Nikkei
profile evolves. It is our focus to
anticipate these changes. We already
know technology, modern medicine,
What a terrific day it was on April 20,
2002 when thirteen Boeing Good
Neighbor Day volunteers helped to clean
up Nikkei Manor, including Brianna
Felix, a 9-year-old who worked so hard
and kept up with her parents and the
other adult volunteers without a word
of complaining. We especially want to
express our appreciation to Joan
Bowman, the Boeing coordinator, who
worked out all the details before their
arrival at 9 a.m. on a sunny day perfect
for hard work.
The team, Joan Bowman, Doug
and Paula Davina, Ed, Diane and
Brianna Felix, Ted Griffiths and
Diane Tanner, Grace Jones, Susan
Jones, Happy Leonard and John
and Rosie Todd weeded the planting
beds, washed down the patio furniture greenery.
and scrubbed the concrete on the ground
A Fantastic Boeing Good Neighbor
Day For Nikkei Manor
Boeing Good Neighbors help make Nikkei Manor sparkle.
floor patio. It took Doug Davina all six
hours to pressure wash the main entry
way and the glass donor display at the
entrance to Nikkei Manor and what a
notable difference this wash down
made.
Gravel from the planting strips
along 6th Avenue South and Lane
Street was moved to designated areas
which were first weeded and carpeted
with ‘weed no more.’ Not only does it
look much neater but now there is no
hazard of slipping on the gravel on the
sidewalks. We are also enjoying the new
azaleas and specialty grass along the
sidewalk. The large square planting
areas on the sidewalk along 6 th Avenue
from Dearborn to Lane Street was also
beautified with new colorful plants and
longevity of life and the decline of
government funding will impact how
Nikkei Concerns will serve an aging
population.
As autumn approaches with a return
to school and an anticipation of the
holidays, our attention turns to family
and friends. Elder care is about the
community, family and friends, sharing
in this responsibility. Nikkei Concerns
has excelled because the community,
family and friends have taken their task
seriously all year round.
Within the larger Nikkei community
are many communities: religious,
political, educational, professional and
philanthropic. These groups have
supported Nikkei Concerns through
generous donations and have contributed
to the expansion of our volunteer base.
Whether you have come to know Nikkei
Concerns as an individual or through a
community organization, your support
has promoted our growth and enabled
us to serve you.
We are on the threshold of the
emergence of a greater population to
serve - the babyboomers. Will we be
ready There is great potential in the
community to continue to provide
quality services for seniors. Nikkei
Concerns is a community success story
with chapters yet to be written. With
your commitment to elder care, the
legacy will continue. Thank you for
being part of the Nikkei Concerns
community. a
readers.
From the desk of the CEO
By Catherine Kanda, Chief Executive Officer, Nikkei Concerns
The strength of a community
depends upon the vision, commitment
and support of its members. Nikkei
Concerns is extremely fortunate that
these qualities are embodied in our
community. Your support has enabled
Nikkei Concerns to be responsive to the
changing needs of our community and
offer high quality, innovative and
progressive services.
Over the years, Nikkei Concerns’
commitment to providing quality care
and services to the elderly has remained
constant; however, the definition of our
“community” has changed somewhat.
Once defined singularly as serving the
“Japanese,” Nikkei Concerns had a
fairly defined community. However,
with the demographic changes in the
population, the community that we now
touch reaches beyond that definition.
As we look around us and within our
families and friends, we can see that the
Japanese population has changed with
more interracial marriages and bi-racial
children. Additionally, nationwide, the
Japanese population is the only Asian
ethnic group to decrease in number
between 1990 and 2000, as reported by
the US Census Bureau. The Japanese
population is now the sixth largest Asian
American community.
Today, there are other ties that define
and bond our community – our
expanded community is defined by our
values and sense of identity. Those
values include a commitment to caring
for others and a deep respect for our
elders and the path that they have paved
for us. We understand the hardships
that our grandparents and parents
endured and appreciate the values that
we have learned from them. We want
our children to also understand and
value their past. It is these shared
experiences of our past, a deep
commitment to caring for others and
sense of understanding and trust that
provides a bond within our current
community.
Nikkei Concerns is built upon a
strong set of values, sense of identity
and commitment to family and
community. Although the community
may change over time, our pledge is to
continue to be responsive to the needs
of the elderly in the community in which
we serve.
Thank you for contributing to the
strength of our community.
Community Blood and Bone
Marrow Drive
A CHANCE TO HELP SAVE LIVES UNIFIES THE
COMMUNITY
Community members came together
on June 22 nd to help in a variety of ways
with the Rare Donor Blood and Bone
Marrow Drive. Nikkei Concerns,
Japanese Community Services and
Puget Sound Blood Center sponsored
the drive, held at Nikkei Manor. A
successful drive, we had 24 blood
donors and 15 bone marrow registrants
taking time on a beautiful summer day
to donate.
Nikkei Concerns is proud to help
spread the word about the need for rare
donors, and we thank all who came out
to support this important cause!
Special thanks go to all our
volunteers who helped with the drive:
William Elder and Ryan Colis
helped recruit donors at Uwayimaya on
the day of the drive. William, who
turned 17 that very day, also donated
blood for the first time. What a way to
spend a birthday! (Donors
between 16 and 18 years of age
must have parental permission.)
Thanks to the Japanese
Community Princesses,
Jasmine Baker, Noelle Ebel
and Chika Kato, and to
Darlene Takahashi and
Tiffany Buckner who also
helped recruit donors. Ken
Sato, of Japanese Community
Services, and Bill Colter
helped direct traffic. Darlene
Suyematsu registered donors
and Catherine Kanda worked the
canteen, passing refreshments out to
the recovering donors. Thanks also to
Kirsten Lutes who donated
homemade biscotti to serve in the
canteen. Our appreciation also goes to
West Coast Printing for donating the
printing of the blood drive flyers and to
Merchant’s Parking and Spic ‘n
William Elder, 17, donates blood on his birthday!
Span Cleaners for donating over a
dozen extra parking spaces for our use
that day! A big thanks to Amy Rastogi
and the wonderful PSBC technicians for
making this day possible. We wouldn’t
have had such a successful drive without
everyone’s assistance and dedication! a
Unsung Hero
By Dr. Ben Uyeno
A long overdue compliment and
thank you goes to Mr. Tak Aoki for his
many years of service to Seattle Keiro.
For the past ten years, he has been
helping transport meals from the
kitchen to the dining rooms twice a day,
two to three times a week! But he
doesn’t just bring the food, he brings
friendship to the residents on each floor.
Additionally, Tak has been the Chair
of the Family Council for the past three
years. He meets with family members
of the residents once a month, listens
to their concerns or complaints and
facilitates communication between
family members and the dietary
department and nursing staff. A
problem solver, Tak tries his best to
make sure that residents and family
members have a voice in their lives at
Mr. Tak Aoki, volunteer and friend to Keiro residents.
Seattle Keiro. This is not an easy job at
times. So we thank Tak for his many
efforts and recognize him for his
valuable contributions and years of
service. Thank you, Tak! a
Seattle First Hill Lions Serve a
Feast and the Community
ANNUAL PANCAKE BREAKFAST SERVES 1000
The spirit of giving, helping and
community is the essence of the Seattle
First Hill Lions Club.
On a bright Sunday morning,
February 24, 2002, the Seattle First Hill
Lions once again displayed their strong
support for the community by holding
their Annual Pancake Breakfast. All
proceeds from this very popular event
are directed to Nikkei Concerns, Kin On
Health Care and Kawabe Memorial
House.
The Seattle First Hill Lions worked
feverishly to serve over 1,000 breakfasts
to hungry customers. Delicious stacks
of hot pancakes were complimented by
the traditional Hawaiian breakfast of
Portuguese sausage, rice and eggs–
enough to satisfy the hungriest of
appetites!
The Pancake Breakfast proceeds
given to Nikkei Concerns this year were
$2,375! Over the past 17 years, the
Seattle First Hill Lions has generously
contributed over $40,000 to Nikkei
Concerns. They are a remarkable and
fun group of people with a dedication
to serving the community.
Our heartfelt thanks goes to the
members of the Seattle First Hill Lions
Club for their ongoing support and
commitment to helping others, and to
the many community members who
attended this event. Each year, the
proceeds from the pancake breakfast
help to provide much needed services
in the community. Thank you for your
continued support. a
$10,000
GRANT TO SUPPORT THE SEATTLE KEIRO BED REPLACEMENT PROJECT
The Kawabe Memorial Fund has
generously awarded Nikkei Concerns a
grant of $10,000 for the Seattle Keiro
Bed Replacement Project. The money
will be used to provide new, safer, and
more comfortable electric beds for
Seattle Keiro residents. The goal of the
Bed Replacement Project is to replace
all 150 beds at Seattle Keiro. With the
support of the Kawabe Memorial Fund,
eight new resident beds were
purchased, with a total of 30 now
upgraded.
Nikkei Concerns has been so
fortunate to have the support of the
Kawabe Memorial Fund throughout the
years. In 1985, a major gift from the
Kawabe Memorial Fund contributed to
our campaign to build a new Seattle
Keiro. In 1995, they again partnered
with Nikkei Concerns by supporting the
construction of Nikkei Manor. Our
most sincere thanks to the Trustees and
Advisory Committee of the Kawabe
Memorial Fund for once again
generously helping to support our
mission by funding new beds that will
mean much more comfort for our
residents. Thank you Kawabe
Memorial Fund! a
Charitable Giving in the Workplace
By May Leong, Fund Development Specialist
Looking for an easy way to give a gift
that makes a world of difference
Consider supporting Nikkei Concerns’
many programs through your
company’s employee charitable
donation campaign. Whether you’re a
federal, state or city employee or a
public agency retiree, you can still
contribute.
Thanks to everyone who participated
in last year’s employee charitable
campaign programs, Nikkei Concerns
raised over $26,000. With your help we
can increase this year’s amount. Below
Matching gift programs
Many companies have programs to
match their employee’s contributions to
charitable organizations. Eligibility
criteria and the percentage of the
matched gift vary, but some companies
will match gifts to Nikkei Concerns,
dollar for dollar. If you are planning to
donate to Nikkei Concerns, you may
want to check to see if your employer
will make a matching gift.
If Nikkei Concerns is not listed in
your agency’s charitable giving list,
please contact May Leong at (206) 726-
A Workplace Donor Says...
“Growing up in Southeastern
Colorado, there was no Asian
community like the one we have
here in Seattle. Several years
ago when Nikkei Concerns
needed to raise $1 million to
build Nikkei Manor, a friend
mentioned that all we needed
was to find 1,000 people who
would donate $1,000 per year.
Ever since then I made a
commitment to be one of those
1,000 people.”
“I find that giving through a
payroll deduction program is
very convenient. It’s tabulated
and easy to use. Twice a month
the donation is already set aside
and I can budget accordingly. I
know that I’m supporting an
important organization which
serves our community.”
NIKKEI CONCERNS RECEIVES FIRST DONATION
We all know that some things get
better with age, but not everything. Old
cars tend to lose value over time until
they are worthless. But your old vehicle
may be very valuable to Nikkei
its first auto donation soon thereafter.
Bob Mizukami became the inaugural
donor when he donated a 1977 Lincoln
Continental to the Program. Bob says,
“The process was really easy and I
encourage others to get involved. Plus,
I was really happy to get rid of the car
because it was sitting in my garage,
taking up space for years. Now I can
park my other car there.”
Since Bob’s generous donation,
fourteen other vehicles have been
donated to Nikkei Concerns.
Board member Jill Nishi gave an
Concerns to sustain the legacy of all
those who worked so hard to create the
second year, some younger community
members have generously responded to
this call to action:
Gary and Christine Kimura have
given a generous major lead gift to the
Endowment Campaign. The Kimuras
have been donating to Nikkei Concerns
since the mid 1980’s, when they first
supported the campaign to build the
“Community” is also why Mark and
Cathy Takisaki decided to make a
major lead pledge to the Endowment
Campaign. Mark Takisaki says that as
he has watched his parents and their
friends getting older, he sees the
importance of supporting Keiro and
other programs so that they will
continue. Mark feels that “there is a
sense of community that means so
much as you get older” and that the
programs of Nikkei Concerns provide
that “community.”
Board member Gail Tsuboi and her
husband, Jim Kranick, felt that their
lead gift was “one small way of giving
back to the Japanese community.” Gail
and Jim were able to enhance their
generous donation through a matching
Washington Residents May Owe
Unanticipated Estate Tax
FEDERAL AND WASHINGTON STATE ESTATE TAX REQUIREMENTS
DIFFER IN 2002
By Marcia Fujimoto, Attorney, Graham & Dunn PC, Endowment Advisory Committee Chair
Effective January 1, 2002, the
Economic Growth and Tax Relief
Reconciliation Act of 2001 made broad
changes to the estate tax at the federal
level. However, these changes do not
apply at the Washington State level,
creating an unanticipated tax liability
for many estates. For example, in 2002,
the federal estate tax exclusion is
$1,000,000 and the Washington
estate tax exclusion is $700,000.
Understanding the differences
In brief, the differences between the
federal and Washington State estate tax
are as follows:
•The difference in the federal and
Washington State exclusion amounts is
important because the exclusion
amount sets the threshold for filing
estate tax returns. For deaths occurring
in 2002, the estates of Washington
residents with gross values falling
between $700,000 and $999,999 will
need to file an estate tax return with
Washington State, even though a federal
•The exclusion amount also sets the
floor for paying estate tax. Estates of
Washington residents with taxable
estates falling between $700,00 and
$999,999 will have to pay estate tax to
Washington State, even though no tax
is owed to the federal government. For
example, in 2002, a Washington
resident with a taxable estate of
$1,000,000 (with no adjusted taxable
gifts) will owe zero federal estate taxes
but will owe $33,200 is estate taxes
to Washington State.
•The second important difference
involves the credit for amounts paid for
state death taxes. This credit reduces
the federal estate tax. For deaths
occurring in 2002, the new federal law
reduces the credit to 75% of prior levels.
However, because Washington State
still follows prior federal law, the estate
will pay 100% of the state death tax
credit allowed before 2002 and, thus,
will pay more tax.
•In 2002, depending on how a will is
written, the gift in a married person’s
will to the “bypass” or “credit shelter”
trust for the surviving spouse may be
limited to $700,000 rather than
$1,000,000. Unless the will is
revised, upon the death of the first
spouse, the $300,000 of
additional federal exclusion may
be wasted.
•If a person becomes incapacitated in
2002 and is unable to revise his or her
will, the problem gets worse in future
years. For example, in 2004, the gap
between the Washington State
exclusion and the federal exclusion will
be $650,000 (i.e., $850,000 state
exclusion versus $1,500,00 federal
exclusion.)
You should consult with your estate
planning advisor to review your current
estate plan in light of this recent State
of Washington development. a
Seattle Keiro Summer Festival
By Akiko Kusunose, 3rd Floor Recreational Services Coordinator
The Fourth Annual Seattle Keiro
Summer Festival was held on July 12th
in the Keiro parking lot under blue skies
and colorful lanterns. The festival
began with the powerful sound of
Northwest Taiko drums. New for this
year, were dances by kimono-clad Bon-
Odori dancers from Seattle Betsuin. The
Katherine Okamura and Yone Bartholomew keep
cool under paper hats at Summer Festival.
group danced three numbers, and when
they danced popular Tanko-bushi (coal
miner’s dance) the dance circle was
bigger than ever, with KIDcare children,
Japanese Community Princesses,
volunteers, and Nikkei Concerns staff
all joining in.
Following the opening
entertainment, Catherine Kanda
presented a bonsai to Kip Tokuda to
show our appreciation for his eight
years work as a state representative.
Japanese Consul Shingo
Higashimoto then greeted the
audience, commenting nostalgically
that the festival reminded him of
festivals in Japan.
The festival continued with a
watermelon smashing game, which was
won by William Martin, Second Floor
Program Manager. In addition to
traditional Japanese dances, we had the
Macarena, led by Aurea Quilit.
Nearly all the residents of Seattle
Keiro attended the festival, along with
KIDcare kids dressed in paper costumes dance the Bon-Odori.
Nikkei Manor residents, staff,
volunteers, family members and
community members. There were food
booths featuring traditional Japanese
fare like Okonomiyaki (Japanese
pancake) and somen, plus summer
goodies like shaved ice and watermelon.
Kids played tic-tac-toe and fishing
games, while adults viewed the silent
auction table or the employee benefit
table under the hundreds of colorful
balloon lanterns.
Thank you to the volunteers,
committee members and staff who
made the festival a success. And special
thanks to Northwest Taiko, Seattle
Betsuin, and the Japanese
Community Princess for their
participation, and to Central Market
for its generous donation. a
A Generous Donation for Seattle Keiro Employees
STAFF LOUNGE GETS FACELIFT
A much-needed upgrade of Seattle
Keiro’s employee lounge was
undertaken thanks to a generous
donation from Lily and Takashi
Hori. The new lounge was unveiled in
a dedication party in May.
“Nikkei Concerns is a valuable
organization in the community,” says
Mrs. Hori, explaining why she and her
husband chose to donate to Nikkei
Concerns.
The Horis were uncertain where their
donation money was most needed, so
they asked Dr. Ruby Inouye-Shu to
suggest a few places their donation
might be most needed. Based on her
recommendations, they decided that
the employee lounge needed upgrading
so that the hardworking staff could have
a nice place to eat and relax during their
breaks.
The staff lounge now has fresh paint,
new chairs and lockers and a new TV,
making for a pleasant breakroom,
indeed! Other necessities like garbage
cans and wall protectors were also
purchased. Thank you very much, Lily
and Tak! a
Lily and Tak Hori, seated, and Dr. Ruby celebrate
the dedication of the newly refurbished Keiro
employee lounge.
The 22 nd Annual South China Benefit
We sold 1,534 meals this year (34 over
our goal of 1,500). The weather was
A Twenty-one Year Legacy
SEATTLE KEIRO SAYS FAREWELL TO A LONGTIME EMPLOYEE.
By Rick Henry, Chief Operating Officer of Nikkei Concerns, Seattle Keiro Administrator
After twenty-one years of service to
our organization, Hiromi Tamura has
decided to retire from Seattle Keiro. At
times like this, it is always difficult
finding the right words to express our
gratitude. Hiromi was the third Activity
Director for Seattle Keiro and worked
diligently in developing our Activity
Program. Hiromi’s work was a
reflection of her resident-focused
philosophy and commitment to serving
others.
In addition to serving as the Director
of Activities, Hiromi also served as the
Director of Volunteers. In this role she
worked tirelessly to recruit and sustain
volunteer involvement at Seattle Keiro.
Hiromi understood the important role
volunteers play in improving resident
quality of life and was an advocate for
volunteer involvement.
Thank you, Hiromi, for the legacy of
love you have left behind. Our warm
thoughts and wishes are with you for
your retirement years. a
Community
Crossroads,
Nikkei Manor
By Naoko Ulstein, Kokoro Kai Director
All the programs of Nikkei Concerns
have strong connections to the
community and Nikkei Manor is no
exception.
Nikkei Manor is located in the
International District where many
Nikkei and others come to shop, eat, or
go to baseball games. Nikkei Manor is
in a prime location for people to stop
George Hayashi and Ichiro Enomoto share a hug
during a KIDcare visit to Nikkei Manor
by to see their family and friends. Often
some residents go out for lunch or
dinner with their family or friends.
Hidenori Shiraishi and Hiroko Watanabe from Gifu prefecture in Japan entertain Nikkei Manor
residents.
Quite a few residents go for walks,
shopping, or have hair appointments
during the day right in the Nikkei Manor
neighborhood.
On Kokoro Kai days, we have a sense
of community within our facility.
Kokoro Kai is held at Nikkei Manor
three days a week. A few Nikkei Manor
residents volunteer to help set up the
rooms and games for the program
each day. We have an average of
35 people that come to the
program from the area. Many of
the participants and volunteers
are Nikkei Manor residents’
friends, neighbors, or
acquaintances from many years
ago. Some volunteers bring some
fresh cut flowers from their yard
to their Nikkei Manor friends
before Kokoro Kai starts. A few
Kokoro Kai participants
sometimes visit their Nikkei
Manor friends in their rooms. And
others got to know each other after
they met at Kokoro Kai. I’m
always impressed to see how much
those people care for each other.
Nikkei Manor has many other
connections to the community through
our special guests and entertainers all
year long. Residents have opportunities
to meet many community groups, local
church members, talented individuals,
and even students and musicians from
Japan. This is one of the great benefits
of residing in an assisted living facility
like Nikkei Manor. You can meet many
people and enjoy entertainment without
leaving your home.
We are also connected to the other
Nikkei Concerns’ programs. Four times
a month, we have intergenerational
activities with KIDcare children. Nikkei
Horizons also offers some classes here
at Nikkei Manor. One resident takes a
class here once a week. Other residents
enjoy viewing the calligraphy exhibit,
listening to the koto practice, or simply
stopping by to see the Zokei Bonsai
class.
These are some of the ways Nikkei
Manor is tied to the community. We
want to thank everyone that is involved
in this friendly relationship with Nikkei
Manor. a
Western Oyster Company Hosts Clam Dig and Oyster Fry
By Kirsten Lutes, Nikkei Horizons Coordinator
On May 14 th Eiichi Yamashita and
his family hosted a group of 33 Nikkei
Horizons participants at his oyster farm
on the Kitsap Peninsula for an old
fashioned clam dig and oyster fry. Two
bus loads of eager clammers, rubber
boots and buckets in tow, arrived at
Western Oyster Company in Purdy, WA
just in time for mid-morning low tide.
While we waited for the tide to settle,
Eiichi described for us the history of his
74-year-old business, (founded by his
father, Masahide Yamashita, around
1928) and a bit about the industry and
process of clam and oyster farming in
general. Next, we received a lesson in
oyster shucking, and many tried their
of us, not so brave, waited for
the fried variety, samples of
which were doled out to
participants waiting eagerly
in line. When Eiichi gave the
signal, everyone grabbed a
rake and trudged out to the
beach to start digging for
manila, littleneck and horse
clams. Meanwhile, Ta Son
Thompson, one of Western
Oysters most faithful and
long-standing employees,
had prepared an amazing
feast of every variety of mollusk
imaginable, steamed, sautéed and
blended into a range of delicious and
tempting dishes for our
enjoyment. The weary
entourage of diggers was well
rewarded with this meal when
they returned, and were given
fresh insight into the range of
culinary possibilities for their
captured fare. Despite a
questionable forecast early on,
the weather cooperated
perfectly, making for a
delightful day for everyone. We
Clamdiggers look for lunch.
hand at shucking their own oysters
while a few brave souls slurped them
down right there on the beach! The rest
Kawabe/Horizons partnership, continued from previous page
Horizons’ computer program started
in the Fall Quarter of 1993 with one
class: Computer Concepts 101 taught
by Yaeko Namba. The following year,
Shox Tokita introduced the first
Beginning Computer class at another
HUD facility, Wisteria View Manor,
which was home for Nikkei Horizons’
computer program during the first
seven years.
Connie Devaney extended a generous
invitation for Horizons to move the
program to Kawabe in the winter of
2001. With the move, we were able to
expand our growing computer program
and double our classroom space. Since
would like to express our
sincere appreciation to Eiichi
and Dorcas Yamashita for planning
and implementing the day for us,
(Dorcas was the genius behind the
the move to Kawabe and five quarters
later our program has expanded with
the addition of six new classes: Typing
on Computer, Introduction to
Computers, Beyond Basics, Advanced
Computer Solutions: Word & Excel, The
Internet & E-mail and Getting
Connected Online. This coming Fall
Quarter a new class will be offered:
Digital Photography and Imaging.
The success of our very popular
computer program is primarily due to
our irreplaceable volunteer instructors
–they are truly the heart of our program.
Kirsten Lutes, Nikkei Horizons
Coordinator, and I would like to express
Eiichi Yamashita shows how to shuck oysters.
delicious fried oysters we all enjoyed)
and for their most generous donation
of fresh oysters and clams to our large
group of participants. Thanks also to
Fumi and Aaron Murai (Eiichi’s
sister and brother-in-law) for their
participation and assistance on that
day, as well as and accolades to Ta Son
for all her hard work in preparing the
dishes we enjoyed so much for lunch.
Other employees, including Lou
Joung, were on hand to assist the group
with shucking and digging and we
appreciate their participation as well.
The generosity of community members
like the Yamashita’s and businesses
such as theirs helps to make Nikkei
Horizons the fun and enlightening
activities program that it is for so many
seniors in our community. a
our great appreciation to our
volunteer instructors:
Fumiko Groves, Yuna
Healy, Joe Ike, Dale
Kaneko, Jack Matsui, May
Sasaki, Yuriko Sunuwar,
Shokichi (Shox) Tokita,
Takako Tokumasu and
Don Yoshida. Their
fantastic volunteer spirit,
commitment and dedication
is vital to the success and
growth of our computer
program and lab. a
KIDcare’s New
Director
By Lillian Hayashi, Administrator of
Community Services
Exciting times are ahead for KIDcare.
The faculty and I are pleased to welcome
Carol Hirayama as our new Director.
She brings extensive experience in
education and will provide much
kimochi (deep caring), kokoro
(compassion), and excellent
interpersonal skills. Carol said her love
for children was extremely important to
her as well as her ability to outreach to
individuals of all ethnic and social
backgrounds. Her first day at KIDcare
was Monday, July 15.
She comes to KIDcare with over ten
years of educating both children and
adults here in the U.S. and in Japan.
Her career began in Early Childhood
Education in California at a Montessori
Preschool. Carol spent 5 ½ years as an
English Language instructor,
Emergency Teacher and Trainer, and
most recently as a Children’s Trainer for
Foreign Teachers in the Education
division of one of Japan’s leading
English Language Corporations. She
was responsible for training teachers at
over 50 of the corporation’s 132 schools
throughout the Tokyo area, Osaka/
Kyoto area and Northern regions of
Japan. Ms. Carol contributed greatly to
reorganizing and developing the
company’s teaching curriculum. She
played a key role in helping teachers
successfully teach their classes. For
Kokoro Kai
Adult Day
Program
Young Ambassadors from the
Community
By Naoko Ulstein, Kokoro Kai Director
In September 1998, Kokoro Kai
welcomed students from University
Child Development School (UCDS) for
the first time. This special
intergenerational relationship started
as part of their Community Service
Project and an Oral History Project.
Our partners were in the 2 nd and 3 rd
grades, and many of them didn’t know
about Japanese customs or about
Japanese-American history. That fall
A good day for a tour: Kokoro Kai and UCDS partners on their way to
Uwajimaya.
quarter, some of the Kokoro Kai
participants and Nikkei Manor
residents became partners of the UCDS
students. Most of our members had two
UCDS students and Grant Beppu enjoyed sharing time together.
student partners, and some of them
even had three partners every other
Monday afternoon. We had 30 students
for that first year and up to 35 students
in later years. The age difference
between the students and Kokoro Kai
members was seven to nine decades!
Both groups shared their stories,
customs and cultures. They all have
learned and experienced something
new since the fall of 1998. UCDS and
Kokoro Kai have kept this special visit
through the school year for four years.
During those four years, new
students became our
partners every fall
quarter, but many of our
members have been
staying with UCDS for
several years. Besides
sharing each other’s
personal and cultural
history, we have done
many other activities
together: watercolor,
“Boy’s Day” paper carp
making, mathematics
games, Japanese writing
and calligraphy, food/
rice ball making, flower
planting, origami,
sharing favorite books and current
school projects, learning about many
holidays in different cultures, and more.
Some of the highlights during these past
four years were the Halloween costume
party, Uwajimaya tour, UCDS school
visit, going to see the Youth Theater
play, and music performances by
students.
For this year’s final visit in June, we
had delightful singing and piano
performances by our student partners.
UCDS students sang many songs- from
patriotic songs to “I Hate to Get Up in
the Morning” to oldies like “Tiptoe
Through the Tulips.” We invited all the
Kokoro Kai members, even those who
were not the students’ partners, as well
as Nikkei Manor residents for this
special event. The concert was very
lively and heartwarming . We certainly
felt more energy in ourselves after the
performances. Following the concert,
the students gave their partners a nice
letter.
After the students leave Kokoro Kai,
our members have commented, “When
are they coming back next,” “My little
boy showed me what he is learning at
school” or “You know my little friends
are so smart…” I myself enjoy watching
the young and the old caring for each
other in their own way. One student
was very good around elderly people
who had some dementia. Another
student had a goal to learn how to build
better relationships with his friends,
and he learned it through his Kokoro
Kai visits by listening carefully, by trying
to understand the differences in people,
and by being more patient around his
partner.
Over the years, more than 120
students have come to visit Kokoro Kai.
One student said, “I felt very shy at first
when I met my partners, but then after
we came it was like they were my
neighbors.” Another observed, “When
we saw her (Kokoro Kai partner) for the
third time, she didn’t remember me.
That’s because some older people have
so much information in their brain
already. If one more thing goes in, it
pushes something else out.” But Kokoro
Kai members won’t soon forget their
memorable visits by UCDS students! a
Annual Rummage Sale
By Susan Nakagawa and Shizue Yahata, Rummage Sale Co-chairs
The annual Ayame Kai Rummage
Sale was held on May 16, 2002 and once
again it was a success. We raised over
$19,000 for Nikkei Concerns this year!
We had approximately 200 volunteers
come out to help us on the three days of
set-up and on the day of the sale. Many
people were involved in helping to setup,
sort, clean, price and arrange the
items for sale, and many more donated
items for this event. We also had guild
and non-guild members who, after
working all day helping set up for the
sale, went home and baked items for our
famous bake sale. Although the sale is
sponsored by the guild, the rummage
sale has become a Nikkei community
event where we all come together to
2 nd Annual Founders’ Golf Tournament
By Joe Yabuki and Lauree Seko, Golf Tournament Co-Chairs
The Nikkei Concerns 2 nd Annual
Founders’ Golf Benefit was held at The
Plateau Club on Monday, July 29 th , and
proved once again to be a huge success!
Thanks to the overwhelming support of
our community, we raised over $35,000
to benefit the programs of Nikkei
Concerns, exceeding last year’s total by
almost $10,000!
The participants
enjoyed a beautiful day on
the golf course at one of
Washington’s top ten
country club venues. The
weather cooperated nicely
and players had the
opportunity to win prizes
at a pre-tournament
putting contest hosted by
Harold Taniguchi. In
addition, Diane
Taniguchi (Harold’s
wife) was randomly
chosen for a hole-in-one
shot from 135 yards, and
a chance to win
$1,000,000. Did she win
under par: Bob Shimabukuro,
Oliver Oshiro, Doug Chinn and
Scott Chinn. They will have their
names engraved on the perpetual
trophy, which is available for viewing
in the Seattle Keiro lobby.
The fabulous dinner included
salad, baked potato, yakisoba, sushi,
baked salmon, prime rib, and a
you is extended to
these individuals.
all our sponsors,
donors and
We are already in the planning
stages for next year’s tournament
and the date and location will be
announced soon. Volunteers are
always needed for planning and
assisting during the day of the event.
If you would like to become a
volunteer, sponsor and/or
participate in next year’s
tournament, or if you have
suggestions on how we can improve
our tournament, please contact May
at mayl@nikkeiconcerns.org. a
Lauree Seko and Joe Yabuki, Event Co-Chairs
Unfortunately, she did not, but
everyone in attendance watched her
attempt from the clubhouse balcony
and gave her lots of cheers and
encouragement.
This year’s tournament format was a
team competition, using the best two
net scores from each hole. We would
like to congratulate this year’s winning
team who finished at a net score of 25
wonderful dessert selection.
During the dinner program a
live auction was held, which
included Mariner
autographed baseballs and
jerseys from the three
Japanese players on the team.
Our thanks to all of our
generous auction bidders. We
also had great raffle items,
including a set of Red Bird
Irons.
Many thanks to our golf
participants and to our numerous
sponsors, including our Title Sponsor,
Mulvanny G2 Architecture, and
our Platinum Sponsor,
Uwajimaya. We also must thank the
many donors who contributed prizes
and donations for our cause. The Golf
Committee, along with many
volunteers, worked very hard behind
the scenes to secure prizes, sponsors,
