"Somebody connected with <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ater maybe."<br />

"Yes, that sounds . . ." <strong>The</strong> magician grimaced suddenly, clutched at his middle.<br />

"What's wrong?"<br />

"Jennie." He pivoted, starting trotting toward <strong>the</strong> foyer.<br />

Harry ran faster, reaching <strong>the</strong> young woman ahead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> magician. "You seem to be all right,"<br />

he told her, puzzled.<br />

"No worse that I was a few minutes ago when you dragged Lorenzo <strong>of</strong>f to view my<br />

handiwork." She was looking up into his face. "What were you expecting to find?"<br />

"He gave me <strong>the</strong> impression you were in danger."<br />

"She is, my boy." Panting, <strong>the</strong> Great Lorenzo halted beside <strong>the</strong> tufted armchair.<br />

"From <strong>the</strong> police you mean?"<br />

He bent and took both her hands in his. "Sometime within <strong>the</strong> last dozen hours, dear child," he<br />

informed her, "you were hypnotized. And for an evil purpose."<br />

"By whom?" asked Harry.<br />

"Alas, my latest vision failed to include that helpful kernel <strong>of</strong> information."
