Daily Interruption of Sedative infusions in<br />

Critically Ill <strong>Patients</strong> Undergoing Mechanical<br />

Ventilation<br />

Randomized, controlled trial of 128 adults on<br />

mechanical ventilation and continuous sedation.<br />

Compared daily interruptions until the patient was<br />

awake with interruptions only at the discretion of the<br />

clinicians in the ICU<br />

Median time of mechanical ventilation was 4.9 days in<br />

the intervention group and 7.3 days in the control group<br />

(p=0.004)<br />

Median LOS in the ICU was 6.4 days in the intervention<br />

group and 9.9 days in the control group (p=0.02)<br />

In-hospital mortality was 36% in intervention group<br />

and 47% in control group (p=0.25)<br />
