PreSIDent’S rePort
In my last report I said I was going to “chill
out”. This I managed to do along with my
whole family in our new crib in Te Anau.
Very relaxing with a bit of fishing and a
lot of lying around doing nothing. This all
seems a distant memory now as I’m back
into the “have to get everything done”
mode before we go to the Nationals and
from there onto South Africa for the DTL
World Championships.
Everything seems to be in order for the
worlds with entries, travel arrangements
and accommodation sorted. Our new
uniforms look very smart and I would like
to thank Glenda and Dave Grant for their
efforts and help with these and also for
their donation of a suitably embroidered
hat for each team member.
Since the Range Manual has been
ratified by council, people are taking more
notice of what it actually means to them
and the clubs. It is disappointing to hear
some of the comments coming back to
us such as “we haven’t consulted with the
clubs”, “we didn’t know anything about it”,
“the shotfall distance is too long” and “we
will have to shut down because we don’t
comply”.
Firstly this manual was not instigated
by the NZCTA. We are only acting on
instructions from the New Zealand Police
Department. This process has been going
on for a number of years and has been
regularly talked about in Gunshot. It is
not the type of subject that lends it self to
talking to every club in New Zealand and
then coming up with a consensus that
satisfies all. We said to the police at the time
that we wanted to be in control of our own
destiny by putting together our manual.
This manual has been compiled using
Canadian and Australian data in addition
to our own input which has, to my mind,
given us a very workable guideline. As for
shot fall distances, there is documentation
for 7 shot to travel a darn sight further
than 200m and it took some talking to get
that distance accepted. Other countries
shotfalls range from up to 267m (300 yards)
with not one country less than 200m. It is
not the intention of council to shut clubs
down, in fact the opposite. Range officers
will be appointed to help clubs solve
their problems. It may just be a matter of
turning traps around or getting permission
to temporarily close a road.
Another comment made was that they
would register their club from the
association and carry on shooting.
However the police range manual
states that everyone comes under
the same umbrella. Even a farmer
shooting clay targets in a paddock
with one member of the public
comes under the same criteria as
us. It is not solely directed at gun
clubs. It is however regrettable
that some clubs may be in trouble
by not being able to comply.
Compliance is an everyday fact in
today’s world and affects every
person in all different ways and
they have finally caught up with
us “the shooter”. Please bear with us to try
and get the best results for everyone.
As this is my last president’s report, apart
from my final Annual Report, I would like
to thank everyone for their support over
the last 4 years. It’s been an interesting
journey with more ups than downs. You
come onto council because you think you
have something to offer, then taking on
the presidency certainly intensifies that
with so much going on behind the scenes
but with great support from our National
Secretary’S
Secretary Adrienne and my council it all
becomes achievable. I go away with no
regrets and with the knowledge that the
NZCTA is in great heart and running like a
well-oiled machine.
I wish our new president and councillors,
cHaMPIonSHIPS By Ian Hovenden
Waitemata Clay Target Club. 30 January – 1 February 2010
The Waitemata CTC hosted the 2010 North Island Championships
over Auckland Anniversary Weekend. After a number of hard days
of preparation of the grounds by a small group of members led
by Bill Kyte, these were in excellent condition. This was made
easier because of a concerted upgrade of grounds and facilities
undertaken by the committee over the past few years.
As normal, the target presentation was excellent thanks to
Noel Cherry, who travelled up from his new home in Wellington to
assist the club. He is definitely a loss to Waitemata. The traps were
kept loaded and throwing targets thanks to a team of trappers
who were organized by Tania Walker who, although not a shooter,
is always of great value to the club because of her organizational
abilities.
Shoot marshalling is always a thankless task except by myself
and this was handled in a really efficient manner by Tony Brogden
who worked tirelessly to make sure squads were on the mark. I’m
also appreciative of a number of members like Jim Senton who,
although not shooting, were prepared to front up early in the
morning each day and be available to referee not only the first
squads but also to be there for the shoot offs later in the day.
No small thanks are also owed to Jacqui, Amanda and Adrienne
who looked after the office which from personal experience is one
of the most thankless tasks at any event.
Most of all for two days the weather gods co-operated and
we had brilliant days on both Saturday and Sunday. Although on
Monday it started out wet, this did not last and ended as a sultry
humid day. Overall the scores were very high and the standard
of shooting was excellent in all events. The amount of red on the
board was a pleasure to see but a number of shooters commented
that perhaps the events needed to be made tougher, but I will
leave that to clubs to decide. The Single Rise shoot off was actually
concluded on the Monday morning after Jon Beddis returned
from Huntly and Cameron Rooney had to reschedule his flight
South. Mention must be made of the Waitemata stalwart Laurie
Coppins who, apart from being at the club to do preparations and
working hard over the event, still had the ability to head off the
field in the Ball Trap.
Overall, a very successful event and the Waitemata Club is
appreciative of the shooters who attended, the councillors who
assisted and the many workers whose names I have not included.
We look forward to the same event at the same place in 3 years
time.
The Southland Provincials were held at
the Nightcaps Clay Target Club on the 5th
and 6th December. After weeks of working
bees, putting up new fences, painting
them, mowing and the on-going servicing
of traps, Dave and his band of helpers were
ready for an influx of shooters. Saturday
morning came and the conditions couldn’t
have been any more perfect for shooting.
The first squad was on the mark at 9am
to shoot at the Minis. There were seven
possibles, all A grade shooters, with
Cameron Rooney from Timaru beating
Michael Dobbie from Southland after 50
targets. Ned Kelland from Moa Creek took
out B grade with 14 and a shoot off for C
grade saw Andrea Diack from Nightcaps
beat Wayne Sutherland, also from
Nightcaps. Jan Manson from Southland
won the Ladies, William Rooney, Timaru
won the Juniors and Ewen Pirie, Mataura,
won the Veterans.
Next they went on to the Double Rise
and Kelvin Gutsell won this outright with
a 20. Cameron Rooney took A grade with
a 19, B grade was won by Ron Dennis of
Southland and Bruce Warnock from Gorge
Road took out the C grade, both shot 18’s.
Ladies went to Jan Manson, William Rooney
won Juniors and Ron Dennis the Veterans.
The conditions were still perfect for
the skeet and with 15 possibles out of 66
there was to be quite a shoot off but as it
turned out Kelvin Gutsell from Mataura
won this in the 2nd round with Ron
Dennis from Southland taking out A grade,
Boston Walker from Gorge Road took out
B grade with 25 and Andrew Johnston
from Western Southland, shooting his first
possible, won C grade. A shoot off for the
2 person Skeet team saw Mike Sime and
Warren Darling shooting off against Colin
Waghorn and Boston Walker with Colin and
Boston coming out on top. The Southland
team made up of Lindsay Rodgers, Ewen
and Clark Pirie, Colin Waghorn and Kelvin
Gutsell took out the 5 person Skeet.
Jan Manson won Ladies, Hamish Bell of
Nightcaps the Juniors and Ron Dennis of
Southland won Veterans.
This only left the Triples match to be shot
for and Brad Warnock from Gorge Road
was the only possible in this match to take
out HOA. As there were 9 49’s in A grade a
shoot off was needed with Daniel Warnock
from Gorge Road coming out on top. B
grade 46’s shot off and Paul Michie from
Australia won this with Andrew Johnston
from Western Southland on 48 taking out C
grade. Ladies went to Natalie Rooney from
Timaru, Michael Sutherland of Balfour won
Juniors and Jim Marshall of Alexandra won
the Veterans.
The Nightcaps Club is very lucky to have
Shooters World Gore, Transport Services
Ltd, Nightcaps, J.J’s Ltd and Southern
Suzuki Invercargill as sponsors of our
$1000 Trophy Match. This match is a total
score from the Minis, Double Rise and
Triples. Colin Waghorn, Lindsay Rodgers
and Kelvin Gutsell shot 82/85. After a shoot
off Colin Waghorn won HOA with Lindsay
taking 2nd HOA and Kelvin taking out A
grade. Second place went to Cameron
Rooney, Brad Warnock was 3rd and Warren
Darling was 4th. B grade saw Paul Michie
1st, Ned Kelland 2nd, Barry Brand 3rd and
John Sutherland 4th. C grade was Andrew
Johnston 1st, Wayne Sutherland 2nd, Henry
Watson 3rd and Andrea Diack 4th. The club
thanks these sponsors on behalf of all the
shooters. Without sponsors we wouldn’t be
able to put out such an array of trophies to
be shot for.
Now onto Sunday. There was a bit of
cloud today, with a couple of quick showers
of rain, the farmers were quite happy but I
don’t think the shooters on the mark were
enjoying it the same, but as quick as it came
it left and we still had good conditions to
shoot in.
The Single Rise was the first match with
75 shooters all trying to get that possible.
Of the 75 shooters there were 28 possibles,
the shoot off went for 184 targets with
Duncan Jefferis from Darfield taking HOA
with Steve Diack from Nightcaps taking
A grade. B grade went to Alysha Bell from
Timaru and C grade Russell Diack from
South Otago. Ladies was won by Alysha
Bell, William Rooney won Juniors and Ewen
Pirie won Veterans.
Points Score was next on the list with 4
75’s. The shoot off only went for 10 targets
with Colin Waghorn winning HOA with
Bob Waugh from Moa Creek taking out A
grade. B grade went to Hamish Bell from
Nightcaps and Tom Hazlett from Gorge
Road winning C grade. Ladies went to
Natalie Rooney, with William Rooney taking
out Juniors and Jim Marshall taking the
Veterans title. The Points Score Club teams
match was won by Gorge Road consisting
of Colin Waghorn 75, Daniel Warnock 74,
Dale Robertson 74, Boston Walker 73, Brad
Warnock 73 and Allan Wilson 73 which is
very consistent shooting.
The last match for the weekend was the
Single Barrel. Of the 75 shooters there were
11 possibles. After a 30 target shoot off
Shannan Evans of Western Southland won
HOA from William Rooney of Timaru who
took out A grade. B grade was won by Eion
Park on 25 and, after a shoot off of 24’s,
gunshot 15
High Gun and HOA Skeet and
Double Rise Kelvin Gutsell
Single Barrel HOA
Shannan Evans
Tom Hazlett beat Russell Diack to win C grade. Ladies went to Jan
Manson of Southland, Juniors went to William Rooney of Timaru
and Veterans went to Tom Begg of Dunedin.
High Gun for the weekend went to Kelvin Gutsell of Mataura
who shot 231/235, which is a very impressive score. One point
behind him was Colin Waghorn on 230/235 to take out A grade.
B grade was won by Paul Michie of Australia with 216/235 and C
grade went to Wayne Sutherland of Nightcaps on 207/235. Ladies
was Jan Manson, Southland, Juniors was William Rooney of Timaru
and Veterans was Ewen Pirie of Mataura.
The Speight’s and Borthwick Teams matches, which are a yearly
competition between Southland and Otago, were also shot for
over this weekend with Southland coming out the winners of
both shields.
I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all the people
who helped in the Office, Lyn and her helpers in the kitchen who
kept us fed over the weekend, the ladies who kept the blackboard
up to date over both days, the barman, also the workers who kept
the traps filled with targets and ran the cards, Steve who kept
the shoot running without a hitch and lastly Russell and Winston
who put so much time into making sure that the traps would run
without a hitch. Thanks guys, without people like these there
would be no club.
A big thank you to the Thames Clay Target club for allowing
the event to be hosted at their grounds. Thanks to everyone who
helped out on the day, Don McCarthy and Richard Boenders for
their help with trap setting and loading, Martin van de Wetering and
Diane Boenders running the office and Martin as well for organizing
squads to help the event run smoother. Nola in the kitchen for a
superb lunch and refreshments during the day. A big thanks to
Wayne Cowley for his cash sponsorship to help pay for the prizes
and Ron Dent for providing the raffle prizes.
The shoot was a condensed program with just 150 singles shot in
3 visits to the traps. Everyone did the first hundred before lunch. The
weather cooperated with just a light breeze and overcast at times to
add a little more challenge and require a better job of focusing with
just one shot. Thanks to everyone who made the effort to attend
and make the day a success.
equipment. Having the traps well maintained makes throwing
consistently good targets that much easier. Martin van de Wetering
superb lunch and refreshments and all those who helped with
refereeing and scoring as well as making the effort to attend. The
weather cooperated all day with just a couple light sprinkles and
very little wind. The lighting posed a challenge at times though
with varying amounts of overcast but those who shot well showed
it could be done.
Dear Adrienne
We are writing to advise you and the executive of
We will still retain the business “Earmold
Zealand sector we have decided to take it a
little easier.
This will in no way mean that we will not be
present at future NZ nationals albeit it a much
smaller capacity and although we will not be
attending this year we hope to visit again in
2011.
We hope that the new owners (Graeme Boyd and
letterS to tHe eDItor
At a recent committee meeting of our club we
discussed the new Range Manual, supposedly adopted
by the Association. Through the “Gunshot” magazine
I would like to hear from fellow Clay Target Clubs
with their thoughts on the manual.
In 1996, our club went through a drawn-out process,
along with our neighbour, to find our shot fall area.
After many soil tests to define 60+ years of shot
fall, the outer boundaries were set, the land was
purchased and our outer boundary was fenced. As
the shot doesn’t cross the fence surely this must
be our safety area. After some time measuring our
range, with a rangefinder and long tape measure to
comply we need to buy/lease another 50 metres of
ground down one boundary, but for no apparent reason
as the shot doesn’t cross the fence that is there
now. In reading the covering letter that came with
our copy of the Range Manual, the last paragraph
states “it is the NZCTA desire to have all clubs
complying in a 2 year period”. I am assuming there
will be some leeway on the 200m limit or the NZCTA
has a lot of money. With my 40+ years experience
with a 12g shotgun, 150 metres, and a good tree line
would contain the shot; especially if the trees
were planted for that purpose. Again, I assume about
67-70% of clay target shooters and any member of
the public with a gun licence, I hope, and with no
formal gun training participate in some form of game
bird shooting where 90 metres is acceptable, and
any member of the public can walk anywhere. After
discussion with our neighbour, he doesn’t give anyone
permission to walk up his boundary. Therefore they
have entered at their own risk and are trespassing
on his property. If that is the only reason for the
200 metres safety zone, surely red flags placed on
the boundary fences and a sign explaining the flags
would be ample as a warning devise.
I sympathise with clubs that have the public area as
a boundary, especially ones who have shot for years
without incident. It seems to me that DTL shooters
are penalised an extra 12 metres because their 200
metres is measured from point of release, rather
than the shooting station as in skeet and sporting
clays measured from shooting stations. I hope range
safety zones are measured with commonsense rather
than tape measurers.
I am hoping for clubs to comment.
Niven McCormick
Ellesmere Clay Target Club
I was asked to comment on your letter to the editor
and while I am not going to be specific on your
clubs identified issue it is my intention to outline
of how 200 meters was arrived at and the process
involved.
I believe this process started some six years ago
(my involvement has been in the last four years)
when Shoot Fed approached the NZCTA and other gun
sports to develop their Range Safety Manuals for
their own disciplines; failure to do this and we
would be subject to a generic Manual and this would
be administrated by the New Zealand Police or some
other organization. At this point the NZCTA council
decided that we were better to control our own
destiny rather than have someone else doing it for
us and ultimately losing control.
The process was to gather Manuals from as many
Shotgun sports organizations around the world and
produce one for ourselves using what we considered
best practice. This first draft had 180 metres
distance for shot fall and was submitted to the New
Zealand Police for peer review. The Police returned
the Manual and only commented on one aspect, the
shot fall!!! They suggested that 260 metres to be
more in line with what was needed.
We, as a group, did not agree and after some tireless
research and with some facts from a Canadian Manual
backed with supporting documentation your current
President negotiated the 200 meters with the
Police.
While we all don’t like change unfortunately this is
the period we live in at present, no one including
myself wishes to be dictated to, but as a group
I think we are better managing our own destinies
rather than someone else controlling us.
In our introduction letter we asked clubs to go a
process of range inspection using the new manual
and to identify areas that do not comply and take
remedial action. This is no different to what happens
at any factory, worksite, farm etc. The action to be
taken can range from signage, flagging to cordoning
off an area etc.
Finally the NZCTA council, I believe, has taken
a responsible attitude to this situation and have
the desire to work with clubs over the long term
to achieve what every shooter wishes: SAFETY within
our sport.
export permits are needed for travel
with Guns.
Although it seems to have been
forgotten about in the last few years,
export permits are still required for the
temporary or permanent export of all
goods and technologies listed on the
New Zealand Strategic Goods List. This list
includes military and non-military firearms
and ammunition.
A copy of the New Zealand Strategic
Goods List can be found on the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs and Trade website
List-2008.pdf. Farearms, ammunition and
accessories are controlled under categories
ML 1-ML 3 and ML 901-ML 904.
Shotguns are listed under category
ML901 (page 56).
To apply for an export permit, exporters
need to:
• complete and attach an application
form, which includes details of the
make, model and serial numbers.
• supply a copy of the import
authorisation (e.g. import permit
for destination country, or dealer’s
licence)
NOTE: The application Form and notes
covering the application are one the NZCTA
web site.
Completed applications should be
sent to the Export Controls Office at the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, either
by facsimile +64 4 439 8519, or by email:
exportcontrols@mfat.govt.nz
The standard processing time is ten
working days from receipt of all required
documents. Applications for export to
sensitive destinations require additional
assessment and may take four to six weeks
to process. There is no charge for the
issue of the export permit. Generally most
western countries including Australia,
South Africa and Europe are not sensitive
destinations but if you are unsure phone or
email the Ministry and check.
Don’t be complacent about this, just
because they have not enforced this in the
recent past. Failure to comply may mean
your firearm could be prevented from
leaving NZ at the border
weStlanD
The Westland Provincials held on Saturday
2nd and Sunday 3rd January was down in
shooter numbers compared to the heady
days of previous years but the quality of
the field was unquestioned. The two top
qualifiers for the World Champs in South
Africa, Gavin Searle and Damian Briggs
were in attendance, along with the current
World Champion, Colin Waghorn and
women’s World Champion Natalie Rooney
and most of the South Island Squad
Members of the National Teams.
The weather was a bit inclement, but hey
this is the West Coast after all and at least the
farmers were happy. Two notable birthdays
were celebrated on Saturday night – new
secretary Pat Dunn who is no longer a 69er
and Tracey Searle who reached her majority.
Thanks to Gavin for generously kicking
the bar takings off and to the Southland
boys, capably led by Lindsay Rodgers who
proved once again they are the country’s
leading rum drinkers. It was disappointing
there were no shooters from Nelson or
Marlborough – was it the weather or the
competition that kept them away
Now, to the results: - Saturday dawned
overcast and still, but a thick fog came down
which lasted ‘til dusk. We weren’t as lucky on
Sunday with heavy rain which lasted all day.
However, the competition was high and the
scoring first class. Skeet saw 4 possibles, with
3 of them from B Grade. After an excellent
shoot-off Mike Sime, the only “A” grade
possible emerged as HOA. Double rise, the
only event without a possible, saw 4 19’s
shoot-off, with Ray Everett securing HOA
from Gavin Searle 1st “A” grade. Minis saw
4 possibles, with Graeme Ede showing no
respect for age heading Pop Andreassend
for HOA, with Pop 1st “A” grade. Triples saw
Mike Sime complete a good day taking HOA
from Colin Waghorn and Graeme Ede. Mike
forgot it was a 2 day event and after keeping
the bar staff busy until after midnight failed
to flatter on Sunday. Points Score saw 2
Barrytown members take top honours,
with John Moore just heading off Graeme
Smith, with William Rooney and National
Councillor Steve Ackland close behind.
There were 15 possibles in Single Rise with
those grand campaigners Gavin Searle and
Pop Andreassend HOA and 1st A Grade
from Graeme Ede and Natalie Rooney. They
say cream comes to the top and the Single
gunshot 25
While gun fitting for game and
sporter guns is better understood
in the united Kingdom than
anywhere else, so far as trap guns
are concerned, expertise is rather
more thinly spread. the reason for
this is, no doubt, the relatively low
numbers of trap shooters, at least
in the more demanding forms of
the game.
There are a number of popular
misconceptions about trap shooting and
trap guns. One of these is that gun fitting
for a trap gun is not as important, because
it is mounted in the shoulder before the
target is called and so the shooter has
time to adjust himself to any kind of misfit.
The truth is good gun fit for trap shooting
is as least as important as for other forms
of shooting, because the gun is in the
shoulder throughout the entire process of
taking the shot. A trap stock’s dimensions
must accommodate both the more
deliberate method of pre-mounting the
gun in the shoulder, aligning the barrels
with the trap and a fast swing through
projectories, in the case of Olympic trap,
up to 45 degrees. Throughout this process
the shooter’s face must remain firmly in
contact with the stock and at the same
time the dimensions must be such as to
26 gunshot
allow him to move freely and comfortably.
Any kind of head movement due to strain
or restriction of the rotation of the body
will result in a miss. So then if accurate gun
fit is essential to trap shooters, what are the
factors that must be taken into account to
achieve it
stANCe AND POstuRe
No two people in any sport adopt
exactly the same posture in the various
physical movements they are required to
make. Trap shooting is no different and
I would suggest these differences are
determined by both individual physical
characteristics and the shooters mental
approach. Nevertheless everyone is faced
with the same task and so there are also
similarities. Many shooters adopt a halffacing
stance to the trap which if we say
represents 12 o’clock the leading foot
points to one o’clock, and the other foot
three o’clock. The alternative is a squarer
stance with the leading foot pointing just
past 12 o’clock and the other foot at about
two o’clock. If you look at a line of trap
shooters most people’s feet will be placed
somewhere within these parameters.
leNGtH OF stOCK
The matter of stance is an important
factor in the length of trap stock required.
A more sideways stance will require a
slightly longer stock and a shorter one for
the squarer stance. What is most definitely
not required for trap shooting is too long
a stock which from a gun up position will
both cramp your swing and bring your
head off the stock on right hand targets if
you are right handed and vice versa if you
are a southpaw.
PItCH DOWN
Pitch down is the angle of the butt in
relation to the rib. This is decided by the
difference between measurements taken
from the trigger to the heel and toe of
the stock. The difference between the two
determines the amount of pitch down.
Some believe less pitch down, which is
created by increasing the measurement
to the toe over the heel, will make the gun
shoot higher, sometimes desirable in a
trap gun. If this is so it is by far the most
uncomfortable and undesirable way of
achieving it. As with all gun stocks an even
pressure on the shoulder from the whole of
the butt area is best, both for stability and
comfort. The amount of pitch down should
always be determined by the depth of the
shooter’s chest, ladies for obvious reasons
benefit from more pitch down.
DROP At COMB
The most important single measurement
and the most hotly debated. It determines
the elevation of the aiming eye above
the rib and the percentage of the shot
charge placed above the line of sight. The
international forms of trap shooting provide
no time to do anything but keep your eyes
glued to the target and so the gun must
shoot exactly where you look. Targets also
vary a great deal in height, another reason
to ensure your gun is neither shooting too
high or too low. How much you can see of
the rib is an indication of this. It should be
remembered however even the lowest trap
target is rising as it goes away from you
and so at least 70% of the charge should
be above the point of aim.
Clearly there is a margin within which
personal preference can decide what is
right for you. For international targets
it is best however to avoid any extreme
either eay. With domestic trap (DTL) as all
the targets are the same height, a higher
shooting gun may well be a better choice.
As well as height, width of comb is
another issue. There are two divergent
schools of thought here brought about I
believe originally by two differing forms
of trap shooting. In the case of domestic
trap the gun is pointed almost parallel with
the ground as the first view of the target is
relatively high. This alows for a more upright
posture if desired and the head need not
drop as far forward which complements
a thin tapered comb. In contrast Olympic
trap targets exit from the ground 15
metres in front of the shooter. Much is said
about the desirability of bringing the gun
to the face which is true up to a point but
inevitably as the angle from the shooter
to the trap is fairly steep unless he holds
a high gun point there will be inevitably a
little more movement of the head forward
and downwards as the shoulder is raised
behind the gun and this position is better
supported by a slightly broader comb
which supports a greater area of the face.
Certainly the Italians seem to think so and
now there is a whole generation of British
shooters who have used nothing but Italian
guns who also agree. I am well aware that
this was not always so, however the main
critics of the broader comb nowadays are
those who don’t shoot trap, but attempt
to mount the guns as they would a game
gun, which can’t be done successfully. In
the end stock configuration is a matter of
preference, but undoubtedly the trap stock
has continued to evolve from little more
than something more suitable for a game
gun 40 years ago and makers and shooters
have learnt a great deal over the years.
DROP At Heel
As a trap shooter’s head position is
inevitably more forward and down, there
is less drop at heel to accommodate this.
Ready made stocks vary up to a difference
of 10mm from comb to heel, a broader
comb generally warrants about that
amount, a thinner comb less. If more than
10mm front to back is required to achieve a
comfortable head position, a Monte Carlo
stock may be considered.
MONte CARlO
Originally designed for competitive
live pigeon shooting, it was created to
provide a trap shooter with a more head
up position by accommodating a greater
distance between the shoulder pocket
and the cheekbone. It’s come in and out
of fashion and at the moment is enjoying
a comeback. Not everybody needs one
and as with a conventional stock the drop
at heel is dependent on the shooters
length of neck and shape of shoulders.
Some shooters choose a semi Monte Carlo
without a lot of drop at heel but like the
support at the back of the face the parallel
comb provides.
CAst
As many trap shooters adopt a half facing
position to the trap it reduces the need for
much cast Nevertheless a small amount is
usually desirable. In the case of the broad
heavy chested man it will be particularly
beneficial at the toe of the stock which will
otherwise dig into the pectoral muscle. In
the case of the shooter who stands squarer
to the trap, more cast may be required
particularly if he is using a stock with a
broader comb. It should be remembered
however that an exaggerated amount of
cast is not desirable for a trap gun or any
gunshot 31
kind of over and under for that matter.
The more cast there is in one direction the
more the barrels are set out of line with the
butt which under recoil can cause rotation
in the shoulder whereby the gun shoots in
the opposite direction for which it is cast.
tHe GRIP
A key area of trap stock design as
almost all control of the gun is in the hand
that holds it. The forearm only rests in the
leading hand, direction being achieved
with the rotation of the body from the
legs upwards. A grip design for a trap
stock must above all not allow the hand to
move at any time during the movement of
the barrels or under recoil. This maintains
an even trigger pressure essential in a
game of split second timing. The grip as in
other areas of the trap stock has gradually
evolved from something very similar to a
semi pistol shape used for game shooting,
with a full pistol grip with a lighter radius.
How tight this radius should be is a matter
of preference as is the incorporation
of a palm swell, another fairly recent
development. I would suggest that the
most important aspect of any grip design
is that it allows the fingers to wrap around
the widest part of the radius with the pad
of the forefinger resting on the trigger
blade. At the same time the second finger
should meet comfortably over the top of
the grip with the thumb. Any grip with
which you have to slide your hand upwards
and out of the radius to reach the trigger
is not desirable. The opposite of this hand
position is equally so, whereby you hold the
grip only at the lower part of the radius and
the second finger and thumb do not meet.
In both cases a firm grip is compromised as
is a constant trigger pressure.
To achieve every aspect of good gun
fit for trap shooting may take time. Firstly
you must develop your own stance and
posture. Avoid slavishly copying other
shooters no matter how well they shoot,
it may be they have very different physical
characteristics to you. At the same time
avoid eccentricities, the basics of good
technique are well understood and there
are no strange contortions that will help
you shoot better. Good shooters come in all
shapes and sizes but if you watch the best
you will notice that no two look exactly
alike, they have all achieved balance and
an ease of movement that provide the
basics of a consistent performance. This
invariably is combined with good gun fit
achieved with their own experience of
what they require together with the help of
a knowledgeable stock maker. This aspect
of collaboration is essential to achieve
the best results, don’t underestimate how
much your own experience and what you
feel can assist the stock maker in providing
the stock you need.
If you decide a custom stock is for
you, it is essential the stocker you choose
to make it fully understands the special
requirements of trap shooting. In my view
by far the greatest amount of expertise is
to be found in Italy. This is simply because
participation in trap shooting is so big
and the demand is there. That is not to
say there is not anybody in the United
Kingdom. Malcolm Jenkins in Luton is
one. A former Olympic trap shooter with
considerable experience at the highest
level of the game, he also possesses a
profound understanding of trap shooting
and the kind of stocks required to compete
successfully. If you own an Italian gun,
consider speaking to the British distributor,
they will also certainly be able to help or
point you in the right direction
Lovely warm sunny conditions greeted the 68 shooters that
turned up for the club’s first shoot of the year. This was up slightly
on last year’s numbers which was pleasing to see especially in
these economic times. The programme began with the Doug
Hogg sponsored 50 targets Handicap by Target, shot in grades
AA, A B C The second event was the Bronco Cup 50 target Points
the only possible was shot by Mark Walsh. The last event was the
Winchester Cup 50 target Single Barrel with Jack Norwood being
the only one to shoot a possible.
Sunday the weather had changed completely and the day
began with showers and lots of wind which tested the ability of
the shooters in the only event of the day, 100 pair double rise. Des
Coe and Mark Walsh, both on 183, had to shoot off for HOA and
Des won this.
Mental traInIng
What Were You thinking
The other day I was asked an interesting
question: “What are you thinking when you
shoot” The questioner was expecting me
to give him a profound explanation of the
thought processes that go into shooting,
but I was unable to tell him anything
earth-shattering. For the most part, I am
not thinking of anything, other than very
basic stuff that are usually just instructions
to myself.
When he asked me that question, I
answered him along the lines of what I
voluntarily thought about in a competition
situation. For the most part I use self-talk,
a basic mental tool whose purpose is to
get my mental state ready to shoot. It is a
simple and very effective tool, as long as
it is practised before-hand, and has been
used by performers for centuries.
Years ago, Gary Larsen, the cartoonist,
had my favourite dog cartoon. It had two
panels. In the first the owner was telling
the dog: “stop chasing the cat, Sparky. One
of these days the cat’s going to hurt you
good. Boy Sparky, you won’t like that.” In
the second frame you see what the dog
hears: “Blah, blah, blah, Sparky, blah, blah,
blah, Good Boy, Sparky, blah, blah, blah.”
The dog was very happy, in spite of the
dangerous situation. That’s how a shooter
should think.
What do I mean by that Well, most of
the time in a competitive situation, you
don’t really think much at all. Instead, you
tend to react to the stress present, and
your brain starts to manufacture “danger”
thoughts. This is all part of the “fight or
flight” response to stress we automatically
have in any competition, and these
automatic thoughts are always negative
thoughts. In a real danger situation they
serve the purpose of motivating you to get
out of the way. If they are too strong they
will ,paralyze or demoralize. But for the
most part they serve a good purpose, just
not while you are trying to shoot a target.
These thoughts are not generated by
the rational parts of your brain. Rather,
they come from a more primitive part that
is mostly concerned about your safety.
The rational part of your brain tells you to
ignore these thoughts, but in the heat of
the moment that really can’t be done, so
you have to fool your brain instead.
In mental health circles, there has
been a lot of research on the treatment
of various illnesses with a method called
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This
technique teaches patients to recognise
the bad thoughts generated by depression
(for example) and deal effectively with
them. CBT can be used in all sorts of ways.
Research has shown using these methods
is both effective and beneficial for a variety
of problems. It involves a series of learning
experiences in which the therapist gives a
set of tools to the patient and teaches them
to both accept them and place them aside
in order to achieve a calming effect.
CBT allows the patient to put these
“danger” thoughts into perspective.
Thoughts are the basis of our emotion,
according to CBT theory, and if you regulate
the thoughts, you regulate your emotions.
So in a very scary situation, the sequence
is: danger detected, thought occurs panic
ensues. The force of the thought will
regulate the last step, so if the scary dog
turns out to be a 5-pound pug, what could
have been panic is turned into relief or
laughter.
When you are shooting in competition,
there is an “unknown” factor that occurs,
namely the public exposure you get from
any type of performance. Doing what you
can do easily while practising in private
becomes a lot harder when the instinctive
alarms are literally going off in your brain.
For a variety of reasons, people don’t like to
be in the spotlight when they can fail, and
not hitting a target is failure in the shooting
business. Because you have a desire to
shoot well, along with the concern you will
not, the “fight or flight” system goes into
action.
Part of mental training is devoted to
dealing effectively with match stress. The
idea is not to get rid of match stress, since
the responses you have to it also have a lot
of beneficial aspects, but rather to regulate
it better so you can proceed to shoot to
your average and prove yourself your
training is still working. This may sound like
a funny way to describe match shooting,
but you are not shooting a match isolated
from the rest of your life, each match and
each practice session is a step towards a
goal of perfection. Every time you shoot in
a match, you are evaluating how well you
are doing. Match stress can get in the way
of this evaluation and keep you from doing
well, so you have to find a way to deal with
it. Learn to regulate your thoughts is one of
the best ways.
We know match stress is not a mental
illness. It is an instinctive, natural response
to a scary situation, and it occurs every
time we shoot in a match. If we want to
deal with it once and for all, we just have
to stop shooting. But there are obvious
drawbacks to that approach, so we need to
find other ways.
This is where self-talk comes in. Self-talk
has been around a lot longer than CBT, but
it took a practical treatment like CBT to help
explain why self talk works. The instinct for
danger is a built-in process that has a lot of
good aspects.
One is the ability to develop trust. More
often than not, this instinct is correct and
and helps define when we are in a situation
that will cause us grief in the long run.
Relationships can be built on the basis of
the danger signal not going off .
Danger is not always obvious, so our
bodies and brains can analyze situations
without our participating at the conscious
level and warn us when needed. That is
usually what happens when match stress
gunshot 37
occurs. If these highly developed instincts
don’t set off alarms, there is usually a
reason for that, too. There is a basic level
of instinct that becomes modified with
experience, usually to make it more
sensitive. Relationships are one of the
things that cause modifications.
Learning to trust someone has a lot
to do with the experiences you have had
in the past, so you generally are able to
determine if someone is due your trust.
The thoughts that come in this situation
are usually ones that generate calm and
pleasant feelings.
Self-talk is the ability to modify
thoughts that are scarier by substituting
a more calming thought or by modifying
the thought. The rational way to deal with
thoughts you know are going to come is to
use another thought to counter or change
it. This will not happen if you just do it one
time at the most vulnerable moment. Selftalk
has to be done in stages. Each time you
confront a fear, especially if you know the
fear is not as bad as advertised (as in the
case of shooting in a match), you can use a
modifying thought.
You can also do some homework after
you have had at least one experience with
the automatic thoughts from match stress
and develop good ways to develop selftalk
for modification. CBT has taught us we
have to practice the technique of looking
at the original thought and modifying
it to something less if it is to work. This is
no different to any other technique you
practise when you are learning to shoot or
be a winner. Just as in those techniques, if
you don’t practise, they won’t work when
you need them the most.
tHe BAsIC stePs OF selF-tAlK
identify the PrOBleM:
This is the first thing any problem solver
has to do. In this case after you experience
the “danger” thought, you need to recognise
it for what it is, an automatic thought that
does not bear any resemblance to the
actual situation. Once you realize match
stress is an automatic response to the
match situation, you are halfway there. The
“danger” thought, may be something like
“I can’t do this”, not “Run like hell,” so you
have to be aware in order to recognise it.
The other aspect you have to recognise
is the instinctive response will not go away.
There is no “personal relationship” you
can have with a shooting match, so if you
are to trust, it will have to be on a higher
plane. Since it will not go away, you have
to learn to live with it. Self-talk helps put it
in perspective.
deVelOP gOOd thOughts:
This is not as hard as it sounds. The real
trick is to be consistent and practise using
your self-talk tools. Simple things like
recognising the initial thought and then
saying something like “it’s not as bad as it
looks” can be very effective once you have
tried it out in a match situation and then
worked with it in your shooting diary or
with a coach/shooting partner. At some
point, you will find thoughts that work for
you.
Practise, then MOdify:
Like all techniques, you may not get it
right the first time. But as you work with
this mental tool, you will get better at it
and you will find what works. Just keep
at it. Modify until you find something that
works. Keep looking even when you have a
good tool so you can find a great tool. So,
what are you thinking when you shoot
This is an important question to ponder. It
can make the difference between success
and failure.. (Dr Keyes is the author of
Nightcaps held the Fiordland Champs on the 10 January in what
best could be described as a typical winter’s day. We had just over
one and a half inches of rain on the Saturday night and rain showers
and wind all Sunday for the shoot. I must thank all shooters who
turned up to shoot this competition especially those that travelled
from Central Otago to contest the Fiordland and Tauri Shields. We
had 50 shooters competing for the cups, seven teams vying for
the five shooter Tauri Shield which is shot in conjunction with the
Single Barrel match and five teams trying to win the Fiordland
Shield which is a six person shoot over the Single Rise match.
Congratulations must go to Gorge Road for winning both these
Shields. They managed to beat Western Southland by one point
on the Single Rise Shield, but had a bit more breathing space on
the Single Barrel with three points ahead of host club Nightcaps.
Once again Colin Waghorn was a force to contend with. He was in
every shoot off bar the Double Rise, which is the only match he
missed targets in for the day. This is very good shooting especially
on the day’s conditions.
Congratulations to all shooters who shot possibles or shot best
scores, and if you happened to win yourself a cup, well done.
Thanks to the Nightcaps team who worked to keep the shoot
running smoothly and get finished in good time. Once again
thanks to you, the shooters, who turn up to shoot, without you
there would be no competition and no camaraderie.
the wet and windy conditions kept the attendance on
the saturday down to only 30 competitors.
First event for the day was Skeet and saw four possibles
shooting off before Dave Turner won HOA as well as the sought
after Sos Savage Memorial Trophy. Keith Livingstone taking 1st A
grade from Brendon Malcolm with 25’s and Chris Cassin 3rd with a
24. A welcome back to Hutt Valley when life member Noel Cherry
took out B grade with the other possible from fellow life member
Colin Shaw with a 24. A father and daughter shoot off was required
to decide C grade with Karen Hayes winning from Huia Prince on
21’s. The two-man skeet team was won by DTL shooters, the two
Dave’s, Turner and Grant (I almost wrote Turner and Hooch) on 47,
followed by the two skeet shooters, Gunner Cameron and Blue
Freeman on 46.
Next up was Triples, with Robert Prince taking HOA with the
only 49. Neil Pratt won 1st A grade from Dave Grant on 48’s,
followed by Brendon Malcolm on 47. Kim Owen won the B grade
on 45 and local skeet shooter, Alan Markham won C grade on 42.
The Minis were up next and proved to be elusive with only
one possible shot by Neil Pratt to take HOA. The 14’s then shot
off before Den Wilkins took away his first medal on his first visit
to Hutt Valley from Brendon Malcolm and Colin Wilton, 2nd and
3rd respectively. Kim Owen took out B grade with a 13 while local
junior, Jordan Rose won C grade with a fine 14.
Next was the Double Rise and again Robert Prince showed them
the way with his Blaser, taking HOA with the only 19. Chris Cassin
won 1st A grade outright with 18, followed by Neil Pratt and Dave
Turner on 17’s. Brian Smith won B grade on 15 while young Jordan
Rose picks up another C grade medal on 13. A big thank you to
Geoff Wells from Kilwell and Laporte in France for their combined
efforts in sorting out the problems with the Laporte Twin Lap Trap,
many thanks Geoff.
Last event for the day was the Ball Trap. 24’s shot off and Karl
Sos Savage Memorial winner Dave Turner receives the trophy
from Shirley Savage.
Andrews won HOA from Huia Prince who took 1st A grade. Neil
Pratt was 2nd and Wayne Pym 3rd on 22’s. Brian Smith won B
grade on 20 and Charlie Rose took out the C grade, also on 20.
Sunday started with Neil Pratt leading the High Gun by one
from Robert Prince, so it was going to be a tight tussle with the DTL
events to shoot. Also we had a better turnout with 47 competitors
and easing weather conditions on the Sunday.
First up was the Single Rise and with 17 possibles shot, we
thought we may be in for a long shoot off. Brendon Malcolm came
out victorious after beating his father John into 1st A grade. 2nd A
grade was taken by young Greg Bentley, well done Greg, you also
won the Junior medal, followed by Keith Livingstone 3rd A grade
and 1st Veteran.
The B grade also got sorted out in the HOA shoot off with Brian
Smith 1st from Karen Hayes and 3rd Tony Benson on 25’s. Karen
also won the Ladies medal.
The Points Score event saw three possibles with Dave Turner
40 gunshot
taking out HOA from John McKinstry 1st A Grade and Dylan
Woolhouse 2nd. Brendon Malcolm took 3rd A grade after the 74’s
had to shoot off. Kim Owen picked up another B grade medal with
a good 73, followed closely by Brian Smith on 72. Alan Markham
won C grade on 67.
Next, the testing Single Barrel. Three possibles shot off to see
Dave Grant take HOA from Keith Livingstone 1st A grade and
Robert Prince 2nd. Adam Green was 3rd A grade after the 24’s had
to shoot off. B Grade won by Alannah Withers with a 23 and the C
Grade won by Charlie Rose with a 20.
Last event for the weekend was the Handicap by Distance with
only five possibles being shot. The shoot off saw a very pleased
Brian Smith prevail with his new gun from Brendon Malcolm 2nd
and Peter Borrie 3rd.
Robert Prince won High Gun on nine down for the weekend, not
a bad effort after being five down in the Skeet. Brendon Malcolm
took A grade on 14 down. Kim Owen won B Grade on 27 down
and C Grade was won by specialist Skeet shooter Alan Markham.
A big thank you to Robert Prince and his many assistants for
setting the targets, also to the Dave, Turner and Hooch (oops) for
keeping the shoot rolling throughout the two days.
See you next time.
Sunday 6th, 30 shooters returned for the 2nd day to shoot 3
rounds of 150 Points Score. Again it was a day of beautiful conditions
but there were not as many possibles shot as would have been
expected. Only four 150 points were posted. 2nd Day High Gun was
taken by Chris Cassin from Patangata, on 445.
Chris Cassin won the Two Day High Gun for the 2nd year in a
row.
QuARteRING tARGets
Targets that are neither crossing nor
straight are referred to as quartering. This
term covers many target presentations and
the majority of targets in a competition
could be placed in the quartering category.
The amount of lead required on these
targets can be difficult to recognise and
careful assessment is required.
The quartering target can create optical
illusions. For example, you read the target
and assess the holds and break points.
Where you visually pick up the target, the
flight tells you it’s a crosser. Then as the
shot develops, at the break point its angle
has changed to a going away target. But
you are already committed to the lead and
miss in front.
Visa versa, the target that visually sets off
as a straight-away shot is actually crossing
at the break point, This would require more
lead than you planned for and the result is
a miss behind.
Problems with quartering targets
are caused by several factors: distance
and angles, both in elevation and to the
shooting station as well as speed and
size. They are particularly hard to read for
beginners and average shots that tend to
over-estimate the required lead, have too
much gun movement and take the target
too late in its flight.
The quartering target requires little
gun movement. The farther away, the less
the gun should move. The angle created
by the shot string and the target is very
acute and requires hardly any lead. Unlike
the crossing or driven target, the required
lead by the quartering target does not
significantly increase with distance.
The gun hold should be moved further
along the line towards the break point to
help control and minimise gun movement
and the target should be taken as soon as
reactions will allow. ‘To wait is the miss’ on
the quartering target.
Chokes should be appropriate to
distance and, combined with number
seven and a-half shot, will give you the
‘edge’ on quartering targets every time.
teAl
First, as aways, read the target. Observe
it not only from the front, but from the side,
whenever possible, to establish if it is flying
straight or at an angle. A true vertical teal
will require lead in exactly the same way a
driven or crossing bird does.
The only technique to use on a teal is
Swing-Through, which allows the target
to be kept in view while the shot is taken.
The gun hold is half to two-thirds of the
way along the target flightline; your visual
hold is at the side of the barrels. Hold just
to the right side of the target (for the right
hander). As you watch the target roll up
the side of the barrel, you time your move
to it, and when the target comes on the
end of your barrel, you smoothly swing
through the line, pulling the trigger just as
your muzzles cover the the target . . . like
knocking an imaginery hat off the target.
The most common fault in shooting
teal is adopting too low a gun hold, some
shooters even hold on the trap house. At
this hold point, the target streaks past your
barrel, your sub-conscious kicks in and you
chase after it in a rushed swing, with little
control. Then the fast moving gun catches
and passes the now slowing target, the
swing does not match the target speed and
the shot powers past the target, missing
above.
The too-low gun hold also causes headlifting
which compounds the-missingover-the-target
problem. A too-high gun
hold is equally bad, resulting in poking
or stabbing or missing below. The classic
‘poke and hope’.
With edge-on targets, establish angle
and line of flight, but also consider the
amount of the clay you can see. The more
rim or edge the less lead it will require--
it becomes in effect, a trap bird--and you
can shoot directly at it. As the target shows
more dome or surface area, so the amount
of lead increases, until a full face-on clay
the true 90 degree teal requiring lead like
any other crossing or driven target. But the
gun hold and technique remain the same
as the face-on target.
Avoid the dropping target! Wherever
possible, shoot it on the rise or just as
it peaks. The dropping target is badly
affected by wind and is accelerating and
falling much quicker than it appears.
The dropping target causes aiming and
stopping the gun or ‘spot-shooting’ and
should be avoided.
With true pairs, take the first straight
under power, firing as you blot it out,
passing through it and smoothly moving
to the second target, shooting its bottom
edge just as it peaks. Once again think
of obstructions and think about which
targets will fall first. Where smaller targets
are used, especially the midi, more lead is
required than with the standard. Look out
for rare but score wrecking combination
pairs, like standards and rockets.
Edge-on targets need half choke and
number seven and a-half shot. With faceon
teal, choke should be Skeet and number
eight or nine shot. You will need to adjust
choke and cartridge combinations to
match target distances.
BelOW tHe Feet
Many targets are thrown beneath your
feet. These presentations require some
changes to the basic set up to counter the
tendency to miss over low targets. The best
way to tackle a low target is transfer more
weight to the leading leg and bend forward
from the hips. This will help keep the barrels
under the line of the target, particularly on
the crossing target, where the miss over
the top is most pronounced. With the low,
going-away target, the tendency to shoot
high works to your advantage, buiding in
lead on that shot.
HeAD MOVeMeNt
Taking targets at difficult elevations can
cause the head to move on the stock.
If the target is high, the head tends
to move forward. If the target is low, the
head will inch back. The comb of the
stock should, ideally, be near parallel for
about an inch at the face to allow for this
movement. This will maintain the correct
eye-rib alignment.
Practice makes perfect, try some of the
above tips I have discussed in the past
to slay your personal dragon and I hope
you will reap the dividends this season in
better scores and sound sleep before each
tournament. (Chris Batha FICSI CPSA Senior
Last year Geoff Wells and I attended the General Meeting of
FITASC in Warrnambool Australia. I have a 1 inch thick copy, mainly
in French, if anyone is interested in a fire side read. There was a
move to change Veterans and Super Vets age up to 61 and 71
respectively, but this was defeated so it remains as is. One item of
particular interest to us was the changes to Compak field settings.
For all ‘International’ championships the following field settings
have been adopted from this year:
3 compak fields - 3 single targets and 1 double on report
2 compak fields - 3 single targets and 1 simultaneous double
2 compak fields - 1 single target and 2 double on report
1 compak field - 1 single target and 2 simultaneous double
I personally think we should adopt the same formula, it would
make our Nationals more exciting for our 200 target matches, and
maybe we could mix it up a bit for each for our Island 100 target
matches. Maybe one of each menu to make up the 100 targets.
This up to clubs though, but is an option for them to ponder.
The 2010 World FITASC is in Laterina, Arezzo Italy, and entries
are now open, after first registering on the FITASC web site:
http://www.fitasc.com/. The 2011 venue has yet to be decided,
but France, Spain and Portugal have expressed an interest.
Although it’s only 2010 we, the Sporting Committee along with
Madam Secretary are asking clubs for “expressions of interest” for
running the 2011 NZCTA Sporting matches. There has already been
interest from Greymouth to run the 2011 South Island Sporting
Clays Championship; Nelson and Blenheim seem to alternate
the North Zone S.I., so it will be Nelson’s turn again. There is an
opening for a Southern Club to host the Southern Zone shoot. The
North Island and Nationals are going to be in Rotorua (January 29-
31), the World English Sporting (http://www.wesc2011.com/) will
be held 4-6 February with hopefully a ‘pre worlds’ shoot midweek.
There is an opening for 2 zone shoots and the Grand Prix all to be
held in the North Island. Start saving. The Grand Prix would be a
great event for a club to pick up, guaranteed good income, known
numbers for catering, ammo and targets, 8 old style fields and a
willing (press ganged) sporting committee willing to help with the
set up. The system we are running at present has a maximum of
128 shooters, 100 targets per day for two days. The entries are ‘pre
entries’ only so exact numbers, squads and times are all done for
you by us. We can even collect the money for you!! There should
be no complaints from Sporting Shooters as this year there are
plenty of shoots on our calendar, and if your club wishes to put
their shoot dates on our Sporting web page just E mail them to me
at madcamm@hotmail.com or ron.madden@tvnz.co.nz
Cheers.
Andy Yerkovich Memorial prize winners on the day.
On Sunday 3rd January 2010 the Kaitaia Gun Club held the Andy
Yerkovich Memorial 100 Single Rise shoot. The weather was
overcast with a hint of rain at the start, but remained fine with a
strong northerly for the last round which tested some shooters in
qualifying and shoot offs.
Shooters turned up from all over the North Island and even
the USA. We finished up with 9 squads (46 shooters) which is a
good muster for our far north club, even though resources were
stretched the usual welcome and complimentary seafood lunch
was evident. What a great lunch. All the seafood you could eat,
well prepared and presented by Robbie and all his helpers. It was
noted that some shooters even had seconds; that could have been
a mistake, as the results show except for the HOA, he might be a
hungry shooter in more ways than one.
Many thanks to all the willing helpers, and Ruth and Anne
in the office, for a great shoot, not forgetting our hard working
president, Mark, who makes all this happen.
time again. It’s boring. Magazines are judged by the quality
of their photographic presentation. Change angles to provide
variations. Take shots from a crouching or alternatively elevated
(stand on a chair) position. Have the winner standing and second
and third sitting vary the distance and vary the background.
• Change the format: In instances when same person is presenting
all the prizes eliminate the prize presenter when taking multiple
photographs. focus on the prize winner/s. One shot that includes
the presenter is adequate. Take landscape photos to groups and
vertical photos to single persons.
• Take control: Assert your authority. People expect to be
managed when it comes to publicity photographs. You have
the responsibility of presenting people to advantage and your
efforts will be applauded when the recipients see the end results
