VISITATION MISSION STATEMENT
Visitation Parish, a Roman Catholic Community in the Diocese of Joliet-in-Illinois, seeks to draw all to Jesus Christ, revelation
of the Father and font of the Holy Spirit, by celebrating the Sacraments, educating people of all ages in the Truths of the
Catholic Faith, and reaching out to those who are physically, emotionally or spiritually in need.

Call or stop in the Rectory Office to register as a member of Visitation Parish.
Every Sunday at 1:30 P.M. Parents are required to take a Baptism Preparation Class beforehand.
Classes are held every other month, so please plan ahead. Call Rectory for information.
Arrangements must be made at the Rectory at least six months in advance. Catholic parties must
obtain a NEWLY issued certificate of their Baptism and then contact the Rectory before making any
other arrangements. Weddings scheduled at 12:00 or 2:00 P.M. on Saturday. NO Sunday Weddings.
It is the responsibility of the parish to bury their dead. The funeral director will contact the parish
regarding arrangements. No specific offering is required for the parish in connection with the
funeral liturgy.
The Perpetual Adoration Chapel of Our Lady, Mother of the Eucharist, is available 24 hours a day for private
prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, exposed on the Altar. The Chapel is located in the
Convent building (south of the church).
Devotions in honor of Saint Peregrine, the patron saint of those who suffer with cancer will be held
the third Tuesday of every month at 7:00 P.M. in the church.
Due to changes in hospital admitting policies, it is necessary to inform the Rectory when hospitalized
parishioners would like a visit from a priest or deacon. Catholic chaplains are assigned to area
hospitals to administer the Sacraments. Visitation parish priests visit Elmhurst Hospital twice a
week on Tuesdays and Fridays.

This year, I am blessed to celebrate the 25 th anniversary
of my ordination to the priesthood of Jesus Christ. As I was
honored to serve as your pastor, I would like to invite you
to share in a special Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, June
2, at 11:00 A.M. at the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus
in Joliet (604 N. Raynor Ave.). A reception will follow. I
hope you will be able to join in this celebration.

The Most Holy Trinity
In the run-up to this Memorial Day weekend you've probably
seen veterans out and about holding donation canisters and
sporting little paper reproductions of poppies. It was Canadian
Lt. Col. John McCrae’s famous World War I memorial poem, “In
Flanders Fields,” which inspired the remembrance poppy that is
seen at this time of year. While McCrae popularized the red
poppy that grew in the cemeteries of France, another man used
a different plant to help people remember. Patrick, Apostle to
Ireland, used a shamrock, a three–petal leaf to offer a visual
explanation of the Holy Trinity, a theological concept that can be
difficult to comprehend. Since the leaf is really one, even though
it has three lobes, it was a perfect example of the triune
God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit— three persons in one God.
In this Sunday’s Gospel Jesus illuminates the mystery of the
Trinity by telling his disciples that the Holy Spirit will guide
them to the truth. Jesus indicates that the Holy Spirit shares what
is his and he shares what is the Father’s. Through centuries of
reflection and theological discussion, the church slowly came to
perceive the mystery of the Trinity as three persons in one God.
While the Father is not the Son, and the Son is not the Holy
Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is not the Father, all are God.
Patrick’s shamrock was his attempt to help people gain an
insight into what is essentially a mystery beyond our understanding.
What we do believe is that this God who is three persons
is also pure and undivided love. On this weekend when we
honor those who gave the full measure of their devotion by
wearing red poppies, we also celebrate the One whose love and
devotion to his people is undivided and unending. That One is
God, the eternal loving Father, the Son who gave his life for us,
and the Spirit that is poured into our hearts.

Fr. Benjamin Chinnappan
Celebrates 25 th Year Silver Jubilee
Youngest of eight children, Fr. Ben
grew up in Kakkanour, a rural farming
village of 500 families in the state
of Tamil Nadu, India. If he grew up in
America, says Fr. Ben, he might have
become a professor. But his exposure
to poverty, suffering and discrimination
under India’s caste oppression
and through a devastating famine that
caused a mass exodus of his neighbors,
inspired him to enter the seminary
at age 14.
Fr. Ben was a “Dalit” of India’s lowest class—an
“untouchable.” His parents encouraged him by their example
of kneeling in prayer every morning and evening. His father
volunteered as a parish catechist and also served as an elementary
schoolteacher, trained by author, educator and missionary
Fr. Gavan Duffy.
“I was blessed to have my father present for my ordination
at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in
Pondicherry,” says Fr. Ben. “After his death in 1992, I
received a remarkable gift from heaven to travel to Ottawa,
Canada for higher studies. I believe my father’s prayers from
heaven changed my whole life. It was miraculous for a Dalit
priest to experience upward mobility.”
After ordination, Fr. Ben served rural and urban parishes
where great missionaries like Fr. Duffy had left their trace.
Through the years, he has largely served Dalits, who lack
even basic necessities such as food, clothes and housing. A
voice and advocate for the poor, Fr. Ben founded Dalit
Solidarity, a non–profit organization that works to promote
justice and equality for all Indians. For 13 years, Fr. Ben’s
health clinics and schools along the Bay of Bengal in southeast
India, have ignited people’s hopes for a better future.
“Every assignment through the decades has given me new
insights and drawn me deeper to my faith,” says Fr. Ben, who
has experience God’s abiding presence whether biking on forest
roads to remote missions in India to celebrate Mass, hosting
a graduation ceremony at St. Patrick’s Academy in V.Salai
in March 2013 or serving as Chaplain at Hines Veterans
Hospital outside of Chicago.
“Every day is a grace,” says Fr. Ben. “I celebrate God’s infinite
goodness, kindness and faithfulness. At this 25 year juncture, I
look forward with hope and trust to new challenges ahead.”

my youth” (Psalm 71:5).

Beginning at 1:00 P.M. at Elmhurst College
Ending at Immaculate Conception Chapel
1:30 P.M. We will begin in the Elmhurst College Mall, located between the
Hammerschmidt Chapel and Frick Student Center on the west side of
college buildings. Fr. Scott McCawley of IC Parish will begin the pro
cession with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Liturgy of the
Word Service.
We will then process to Immaculate Conception High School Main
Entrance where Fr. Scott Huggins will lead us in prayer.
The procession will end with Benediction in the Immaculate
Conception Chapel.
• All children who received their First Holy Communion this spring are
invited to walk in the procession wearing their First Communion outfits.
• In case of inclement weather, the celebration will be held in the Immaculate
Conception Chapel at 2:30 P.M.

R.E. & Visitation School Tuition Assistance Program
This past week 32 Visitation Grade School and other organization program families purchased $13,723 in gift certificates
through our MANNA program. The earned tuition credit for the past week was $625.
There have been several disappointments in the past few weeks as our customers expect to visit our Walk–in Service
and purchase large quantities of certificates. It is important to call ahead to reserve a large order for any one store or
restaurant by Sunday night for the item to be available at the Wednesday Walk In. The orders from our participants are
at times huge and a short call will solve this situation without pain.

Summer Choir Opportunities in JULY
This summer we will have Choir opportunities during
July. We will sing at the weekend Masses. During our
rehearsals we will work on vocal technique, reading musical
notation and preparing special arrangements. This is an
excellent chance to have some time to prepare if you are
interested in joining one of the choirs in the fall. The schedule
is below.

Talk About Change!
Last weekend we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost, the
birthday of the Church. The Holy Spirit descended upon the
Apostles and the Church began. The Holy Spirit is the
Sanctifier, the One who changes the bread and wine into the
Body and Blood of Christ and Who changes us, consecrating
us “in Spirit and Truth” (Jn 4:24). When the Holy Spirit
came upon Christ’s apostles and His mother, Mary, at
Pentecost, He filled them with Divine Life, transforming
and uniting them as one apostolic community. The Church
was born, gifted for all time with the fullness of the Spirit
of God. We are now the living temples of the Holy Spirit
and “our churches and adoration chapels are the upper room
where not only is the Last Supper renewed but Pentecost
also.” It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that Christ’s
disciples will be “witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea
and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). (from

Come to the Adoration Chapel and watch the changes
that will happen to you, all for the honor and glory of God.
The Adoration Chapel is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a

Baptism Preparation Classes
The next Baptism Preparation class will meet on,
Monday, June 3 at 7:00 P.M. in the Parish Center.
These classes help parents prepare for their ministry as
Christian parents. Please call the Rectory at 630-834-6700 to
register or for more information.

According to Fr. William Casey,

greatest loss of faith in the 2000 year
history of the Catholic Church.”

CCW CORNER
Thank you to all CCW members, friends and family for
attending the May 14 CCW Installation Mass and Luncheon.
Thank you to Fr. Huggins for celebrating the Mass and special
thanks to Mary McCann, Germaine Yang and Lisa Spedale for
planning the Mass and to Music Director, Barbara Masters,
and the Women’s and Children’s Choir for inspirational music
throughout Mass. Thanks also goes to Gina Filosa, Cathy
Frymire, Margaret Hohman and Colleen Muno for planning a
special event luncheon at River Forest Country Club.
Many women of the parish were able to attend the event
thanks to childcare arrangements by Mary Beth Lucas, Anne
Bigane and Heather Ude.
Finally, the day started with a gathering at the Past
CCW Presidents’ Breakfast organized by Gail Vitek.

Visitation Fathers Club Meeting
Friday, June 7, 8:30 P.M.
In 1999, Brian Reardon started the Visitation Fathers Club
(VFC) so dads of kids at Visitation could socialize and get to
know each other. Brian had a vision for the VFC and now 15
years later it has evolved into something great.
VFC is not only a forum for dads to meet on a monthly
basis, but it also conducts fundraising efforts such as the Golf
Outing and March Madness where the proceeds all directly
benefit the school/parish.
Brian has five children who have attended Visitation and
his youngest child is graduating from Visitation this year.
Therefore he will be stepping down from his duties as VFC
President.
The next VFC meeting is on Friday, June 7, in Valentino
Center starting at 8:30 P.M. This announcement is to invite all
former and current VFC members to come out and thank
Brian for all that he has done over the past 15 years. Please
mark your calendars as we look forward to seeing everyone
on Friday, June 7. Come by to say thank you To Brian!

DIOCESAN
Assistant Program Director
for Young Adult and Youth Ministry
The Diocese of Joliet is seeking an Assistant Program
Director in Young Adult and Youth Ministry. The Assistant
Program Director will assist with the administration of
youth ministry and young adult ministry, will have primary
responsibility for campus ministry efforts at one non-
Catholic campus and young adult efforts in that same area
of the diocese. This staff person will participate in the
visioning, creation and development of diocesan and
regional (multi–parish) programs and other forms of outreach
to junior high and high school students, college students
and young adults in the Diocese of Joliet. his staff

The Diocese of Joliet is seeking a part–time
Administrative Assistant/Secretary with excellent secretarial
and computer skills. The Administrative
Assistant/Secretary will prepare correspondence, compose
drafts and routine letters, work on a variety of diocesan projects,
answer phones, etc. College or business school education
preferred and ability to maintain confidentiality is
required. Must have over five years previous administrative/secretarial
experience working on an executive level,
and a solid working experience with computer programs.

thank you to everyone at Visitation School for their donations
and support to Misericordia Candy Days. I have been fortunate
to collect at Visitation for several years now and am continually
amazed at the generosity of your families and students.
I recognize that every family has their own special
charity and their own personal family issues—whether dealing
the recent Elmhurst flood or a family member sick or out
of work and yet everyone still reaches out to support
Misericordia. I am overwhelmed with gratitude.
Visitation is a special school, which teaches not only the
fundamentals of learning but also the importance of giving. I
have been inspired by the love that touches me when I walk
through your doors.

Visitation, in partnership with Love Christian
Clearinghouse, is helping members of our community overcome
a temporary financial set–back through the work of
the LOVE call–in center in Westmont. LOVE receives an
average of 300 calls a month and is in need of volunteers to
listen to our callers, share the love of Christ over the phone
and offer the appropriate help. Three–hour weekly shifts are
available on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00
a.m. to 12:00 noon or 1:00 to 4:00 P.M. Plenty of training is
provided.
