The Strathmore Annual Report for 2006–2007 is a story of
stability, discovery and cooperative enterprise among partners.
Now in our third operating year, the precipitous climb from a
$2 million budget before opening to a $6 million annual
operating budget is accomplished. As you’ll see, thanks to
excellent earned income and generous contributed income,
we have built a business model capable of sustaining both the
Mansion and the Music Center for years to come. In 2006, we
were blessed with our first private $1 million gift from Jim and
Carol Trawick to create an educational program endowment.
We also discovered a broad and diverse audience in our
market who enthusiastically supported artists of their culture,
country and musical language. The size and enthusiasm of the
Chinese, Hispanic, African-American and Korean audiences
was particularly gratifying. Strathmore now regularly programs
for the world’s audiences and they come.
With six partners sharing one building, we launched a One Portal
Initiative to “make it easier to buy, easier to give, and easier to
work” for our partners and staff. Together, we began building
cooperative marketing, development, programming, and
education strategies by combining resources to improve services
and programs for our customers. Joint publications and
simplified ticket purchasing, shared artistic and teaching talent,
simplified web access are just the beginning. Tell us what you’d
like to see, and we’ll work to make it happen.
2006–2007 is a story of many successes: Strathmore’s unique
model; our connection with diverse audiences; and a newfound
collaboration between historically competitive arts
organizations … three small miracles unheard of a decade
ago. If, with your help, we can come that far in three years,
can you imagine what the future holds at Strathmore
Performance of Jason Robert Brown’s “Songs for a New World” with the
composer at his piano (May 16, 2007).
Plácido Domingo conducts the Washington National Opera (May 31, 2007).
“At a post-performance reception for invited guests, a
clearly pleased Mr. Domingo expressed his delight at
the company’s enthusiastic reception at Strathmore,
broadly hinting that he would seriously consider
making this an annual event.”
—TERRY PONICK, THE WASHINGTON TIMES, JUNE 2, 2007
“But this week at Strathmore was very different and
really special, because it was the first time I’ve done
my own show in such a big hall. And obviously, Songs
for a New World is a very important show to me. Not
to mention that the hall is absolutely gorgeous and
designed to be extraordinarily acoustically versatile,
which suits that show perfectly.”
4 Strathmore Hall Foundation, Inc. Annual Report FY2007
Dedicated to Education
FY2007 marked the first year in a major expansion of
Strathmore’s education and outreach programs. Strathmore
initiated four new education programs, which served over
1,100 children and adults in workshops, masterclasses and
lectures. An even larger expansion of programs is slated for
FY2008 and FY2009. Highlights of the season include:
Shape Note Singing Workshop (April 15, 2007)
Glass Art Workshop (February 17, 2007)
This was our first visit, I wish we had known about BYT
[Backyard Theater] earlier! Our kids were doing their
own improv, and we loved it, as well!
—JENNIFER GIBSON, CHEVY CHASE, JULY 2006
• A $1 million donation to the Strathmore Endowment to
support art and music education programs from Jim and
Carol Trawick.
• The sold-out Family Sing Series which brought grandparents,
parents and children to share in the joy of singing together.
• Inspired by its popular art programs for children, Strathmore
launched Art Workshops for adults in glass, polymer clay
and painting.
• Lend Me Your Ear pre-performance lectures proved a
popular add-on for ticket buyers to Music Center
performances.
• The Shape Note Singing Series introduced over 200 patrons
to the art of Sacred Harp singing.
• The Ruth Rales Comcast Kids Student Concerts brought all
10,000 Montgomery County Public Schools 2nd graders to a
Concert Hall performance by the National Philharmonic for
the 3rd time since the opening of the Music Center.
Students prepared for the concert experience with extensive
pre-performance educational materials, and joined in with
the orchestra to perform a song during the concert.
• Strathmore’s Artist in Residence program entered its second
Committed
to Community
An important element of Strathmore’s mission is serving the
many interests of our local community. Residents of
Montgomery County represent diverse demographic and
economic backgrounds, originate from countries all over the
world, and speak 134 languages. During FY2007 Strathmore
presented a wide selection of programs for our community
including:
• Over 7,000 patrons attended performances, workshops and
demonstrations presented by Strathmore and our resident
partners at the annual Discover Strathmore festival, which
was presented in collaboration with the annual East Coast
Jazz Festival.
• Over 9,000 patrons attended ten performances on the
Strathmore Free Summer Outdoor Concert Series, which
featured classical, rock, blues, folk, country and big band.
• Children and parents enjoyed eight low-ticket price Backyard
Theater performances by Billy B., Footworks Percussive
Dance Ensemble, Catfish Hodge and more, sponsored by
Provident Bank.
• Strathmore and the BSO at Strathmore co-presented a
neighborhood Block Party, featuring performances by the
Baltimore Symphony and the folk/ bluegrass band Chatham
County Line for the low ticket price of $10.
• Numerous culturally and ethnically diverse performances
graced our stages, including, Orquestra de São Paulo, Jigu!
Thunder Drums of China, Hamburg Symphony, Flamenco
Vivo Carlota Santana, The Irish Tenors, Kusun Ensemble, a
Cherry Blossom Concert, and Chopteeth Afro-Funk Big Band.
Local dancers enjoy a masterclass with Tommy the Clown and his dancers,
sponsored by Strathmore (October 6, 2007).
It was Tom’s first outing since his surgery. We have
high praise for the staff and volunteers, who made
everything go smoothly—a ride from the garage, a
wheelchair, and a place to enjoy our pre-show wine.
And the performance provided the high-energy,
creative boost we needed after a long week! (Kudos
to your facilities team for keeping the walkway,
flooring, and other surfaces dry and safe for guests
with crutches.)
