The main objectives of the Board include:<br />

1 To strengthen and enhance the exclusive image of the destination in the source<br />

markets.<br />

2 To position the Maldives as a ‘premium' destination worldwide.<br />

3 To achieve the growth targets set for the destination in the marketing plan for<br />

each year.<br />

4 To diversify the source markets as well as the market segments to the destination.<br />

5 To undertake market research to monitor the world economic conditions and<br />

travel trends in order to identify market opportunities.<br />

6 To monitor and support the private sector in their operations to maintain viable<br />

bed occupancy levels and to iron out seasonal fluctuations in visitor arrivals.<br />

The MTPB employs 15 staff at its Male’ headquarters. In addition, it has a smaller<br />

number of staff at the Government Tourist Information Office in Frankfurt in Germany.<br />

The MTPB is also represented through agents in the United Kingdom, Germany, France,<br />

Austria, China, and Hong Kong.<br />

C. THE MALDIVES ASSOCIATION OF TOURISM (MATI)<br />

MATI is a non-profit, non-governmental organization, created to represent private<br />

businesses operating in the tourism sector. It coordinates its activities with the<br />

government and collaborates with other organizations nationally and internationally to<br />

attain its objectives. It is generally regarded as a highly effective lobbyist.<br />

Membership is open to the owners/operators of tourist accommodation facilities in the<br />

Maldives (resorts, hotels, guest houses, safari operators), Maldivian companies engaged<br />

in travel trade related activities, travel agents and tour operators both national and<br />

foreign, water sports, scuba diving companies, picnic islands, banks and financial<br />

institutions, airlines, suppliers to the tourism industry and tourism and travel writers.<br />

An Executive Board made up of 12 members and a professional Secretary General heads<br />

MATI. Its mission statement is as follows:<br />

“To be truly representative of the Maldives tourism and travel industry, and to<br />

enhance the professionalism and profitability of stakeholders through the effective<br />

representation in industry and government affairs, programmes of human resource<br />

development, marketing and promotion, research, information gathering and<br />

strategic alliance building and by identifying and satisfying the needs of the<br />

global traveling public, to promote travel and tourism to and from the Maldives.”<br />

MATI is represented on key government committees and regulatory bodies concerned<br />

with the sector. It lists as its core tasks:<br />
