Skeletons
“DARKENU”- the Yeshiva Way!
It is certainly puzzling when, in spite of parents having done ‘everything right’, a child rebels (chas
v”sh); it is equally enigmatic when despite the child’s exposure to every violence and immorality,
somehow, a fine upstanding citizen emerges.
Rivka did not have Lot’s advantages – she grew up far from the rarified atmosphere of the Home of
Avraham, which exerted a pull and upward force beyond the simply verbal. You almost could not
help learning to look after the underdog, indeed even at personal risk, in that home.
Rivka grew up in the house of the evil man Besuel, and her brother the conniving Lavan – one of the
most deceitful people in history.
Yet we meet young Rivka, at the well, fully prepared to engage the needs of a wayfarer - as befits
Avraham himself. Where did she get this awareness
Perhaps an essential key to understanding our children is to look sometimes beyond our four cubits.
There are zaides and bobbas, there are generations who we did not even know. There are uncles
and aunts. There is a veritable “shtetl” in our homes.

The Chinuch crucible is not just the measurables in our homes. It depends on the variables of
generations long gone and continents never visited.
Possibly this is why the Torah registers the birth of Rivka immediately preceding the death of Sarah.
Perhaps that is why Yitzchak brings Rivka, his wife to be, into his mother’s tent. Immediately the
miracles that occurred for his mother occurred for Rivka. Perhaps this is all an indication that it
takes a shtetl to raise a child. It takes a history as old and as wide as the world itself.
Perhaps this opens a new page in Chinuch challenges. Perhaps we are not always our most kind
and patient and uplifted selves; indeed sometimes we might even struggle with our morality.
However, there is no doubt an Avraham somewhere in the family who is davening passionately for
all his family.
We would do well to incorporate within our Chinuch and family vision all the refined and noble and
just and pious people that people our family tree and our relationships. We don’t and we should not
fight alone. Bring along David Hamelech and Avraham and Sarah.
THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS
The High School learners and staff are terribly shocked and
saddened because of the sudden death of our beloved History
teacher, Mrs Eunice Broido. On Thursday morning we received
the terrible news that Eunice had passed away very suddenly
while recovering from surgery that she had had earlier in the week.
The surgery went well but sadly, on Thursday morning Eunice
suffered a fatal heart attack while still in hospital.
Eunice joined our staff in January this year and immediately
became incredibly popular with both colleagues and learners. She
taught both senior and junior learners in both the Boys’ and Girls’
schools.
Eunice showed her concern for her fellow man by going far
beyond the duties of a teacher in terms of the way she handled the
learners of Yeshiva College, both in and out of the classroom. She
showed enormous compassion for all and particularly for those
whom she felt needed a little extra care and attention. Her passion
for her subject and incredible knowledge ensured that her learners
shared her interest and love for her subject.
We are all shocked and traumatized by her passing and wish her
family long life. Eunice’s warm and caring personality endeared
her to everyone and we will all miss her gracious, stylish presence
on our campus enormously.
Warm regards,
YESHIVA GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL
DEAN VECHESHBON
We could never pay tribute to Sarah Imeinu without revisiting the personality of Avraham. Since
they were a perfect partnership, everything Avraham did needs to be attributed equally to Sarah.
So, although it is Parshat Chayei Sarah, I’d like to reflect back on last week’s Vayeira where
Hashem begins to relate to Avraham no longer as a servant but, in a sense, as a friend. Besides
the message this communicates in terms of Hashem’s relationship to Am Yisrael, it also tells us the
importance of the “middah” of friendship. Last Sunday night, I was blown away by the strong
demonstration of this attribute, when so many students, not just from Grade 11 but from all the
grades, took off vital exam preparation time to be with Shira at the Hazkarah for her late mom, Lindy
Lederman z”l. A number of staff and other adults were there as well, including two of Lindy’s close
friends Robyn Selkow and Linda Zulberg whom we were privileged to hear speak. Their
recollections about Lindy also left us with a model of a real friend, something to aspire to!
Avraham no doubt was the pillar of “Chessed”. Picking up from
where they left off last week, when the Grade 9’s presented Victor
with a birthday present (after a few weeks’ secret collection!) out
of appreciation for all he does looking after the grounds and
facilities of the Girls’ High School, their class invited Rosey and a
busload of her beautiful orphans from the Fountain of Love in
Katlehong, for an afternoon of fun and creativity. Rosey and the
FOL are no strangers to us. We’ve been privileged to assist
Rosey in her legendary work for many years. Currently she has over 30 children living with her at
home, she looks after almost 50 others at her day-care Centre and twice a week Rosey runs a soup
kitchen for an additional 100 children. She has 3 “children” who have started university degrees – 1
at Wits and 2 at UJ! Next year I hope we’ll get involved in more projects to help them.
18 November 2011 – 21 Cheshvan 7

From Dani Flaum and her dad’s connections with Stallion Security for the transport (thank you!) to
Kidwell and a yummy lunch pack, through the DJ team “Sho-Kira” up to the last detail of tidying up
(no evidence was left even though there was the expected mess of lots of kids having a great time!).
The Grades 9’s very ably assisted by the Grade 8’s and 7’s kept our visitors entertained, loved and
so well looked after! Shkoyach ladies!
Still on Grade 9 news, thank you to Dani Flaum, Sassi Weinberg, Carmella Kangisser, Natasha
Shimone, Gabi Urdang, Hannah Lager and Kaylee Lazarus for assisting the Sports Department with
a session of “Coaching the Coaches”. The Spar SA Netball coach and captain conducted drills and
coaching techniques illustrated by our netball players and it was a very beneficial session!
Rav Gross has been back in town. His presence always generates a flurry of activity. Much is
strategizing about Limudei Kodesh Syllabi, staff sessions and departmental session and of course a
brief shiur with his former Kfar students who insisted on taking some time out from exams for this
purpose (shkoyach ladies!). Rav Gross had such awesome feedback on our current Kfar group. It
is so wonderful to hear and we wish our Grade 10’s everything of the best in Israel and that they
should continue from strength to strength!
Some of our Grade 11students conducted davennin groups for the
Grade 6’s under the auspices of YID and we were thrilled to
welcome them to our Beit Midrash for Tefillah! At Tasty Torah
Treats Morah Katz and students have been very busy cooking up
a storm for so many people, one being Meg and Rav Natan, who
brought their son Uriel Ami into the Brit of Avraham Avinu. Mazal
tov! (BTW a word of warning: Morah Katz did an advance cake
decoration course on Sunday – so brace yourselves for many new
yummy techniques!) Finally, the Grade 10 classroom received a new coat of paint; more classes to
follow.
Wishing the Matrics and Grade 11’s “behatzlachah” for the exams they are writing. Study well
everyone!!!
Dear Parents
We are getting closer and closer to the end of the year.
Hard to believe.
On Wednesday we had our annual Grade 1 Concert – “Viva South Africa”. What an amazing morning.
The energy, vibe and atmosphere was electrifying. To watch what the Grade 1’s have achieved in a year
is beyond words. A big well done to the eight Grade 1 teachers, General Studies and Limudei Kodesh
and of course Mazaltov Grade 1 learners, may you go from strength to strength.
On this note, I would like to invite the Grade 1 parents this Wednesday 23 November 2011 to watch your
child Daven. As they are now davening from a Siddur it is heartwarming to witness this beautiful
achievement. Please join us in your son/daughter’s classroom from 07h40 to 08h10. Looking forward to
seeing you.
The Grade 6 students are currently learning about Kashrut and in the last two weeks they have heard
Rabbi Gerson (a Shochet) speak to them about schechita. They also went on a visit to Moishes Butchery
where they saw the process of koshering and nikur after which they were heard to say, “I’m never eating
meat again”. This promise rang true for approximately five minutes until they were each given a packet of
biltong which was in most cases devoured before they returned to school. In the coming days they will be
visiting the Keilim Mikva and they will learn many other aspects of Kashrut. Thank you Morah Bender and
Morah Chaya for your ongoing hard work.
On Thursday, last week, the Grade 2’s had a very special visitor. They all met in the Library and Rabbi
Hilton Herring, a parent of our school, came to talk to the children on Mezzuzot and Tephillin. He showed
the children different Mezzuzot an Tephillin and the children thoroughly enjoyed his Torah story. Rabbi
Hilton was invited to the school as the children are learning about this particular theme in class. The
children asked many interesting questions and the talk was enjoyed both by teachers and learners.
Thank you Rabbi Herring, we appreciate your time and effort.
Grade 6 parents, we look forward to seeing you at our Valedictory Ceremony on Thursday 1 December at
19h30 sharp.
Dear Parents,
It has been such a hot week. The sun is fierce and ideally we would like each child
to have a sun hat in their locker. Please send your child to school with a hat and
make sure it’s marked with your child’s name on it. Sun cream is also essential and
the fact that children are bringing water to school is also a big win.
Let us all deal sensibly with global warming!
That brings me to the subject of recycling! All the children have been involved in
recycling projects and the artwork in Grade R is amazing. Please remember to bring
all recycling items and fill our bins at the entrance of the school.
Yesterday we welcomed the children from Cecile Isaacman’s Playschool. The children loved our
YESHIVA COLLEGE PLAYSCHOOL
PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents
Our week started with a delightful puppet show by Machteld. Within seconds, our children's attention
was held by the appearance of a friendly, furry kangaroo and almost an hour of pure and interactive
enjoyment followed.
The display board in the entrance is filling up, slowly but surely, with the children's artwork from their
"Books of Bereishit". It is certainly adding an extra dimension to the entrance and it is amazing to see the
interest the children are showing in the display . This week saw us stamping fish, pasting colourful birds
and making animals through some very creative means.
In Parsha, we dramatised the story of Avraham sending Eliezer to find a wife for Yitzchak, with the
requisite camel eliciting much laughter and so adding the important factor of fun to learning.
Songs and stories completed a very busy week.
LIBRARY
Next week will be the last week of our library programme. It has been a great success
and the children have so enjoyed mulling over the various books and deciding which to choose. The
programme has provided the perfect opportunity to teach the taking of turns; freedom of choice and
staying with a decision; and coping with the inevitable disappointment when a particular book was already
taken. Above all, it promoted a love for reading.
LOST PROPERTY
Please check the lost property section, in the entrance, for any items that you may have misplaced. Any
Hachnassat Orchim
By Rabbi Ari Enkin
The mitzva of Hachnassat Orchim in its purest form consists of hosting and serving the needs of those
who are destitute and have no place to eat or sleep. In the olden days, before the proliferation of inns or
hotels, a Jew who had found himself stuck in an unfamiliar village would be at the mercy of the villagers to
let him in for the night. Such a person had no choice but to randomly knock on a Jewish home, potentially
at any hour of the day or night, and hope that the homeowner would welcome him in to stay the night.
Some authorities hold that every community has an obligation to build a hotel that guests to the city would
be able to make use of.[1]
There is a misconception that today’s widespread practice of inviting a family or even a few different
guests to one’s home for a Shabbat meal is the fulfilment of the mitzva of Hachnassat Orchim.
Unfortunately, this may not be the case. Many authorities contend that in our society, inviting friends over
to our home to eat, drink, or even sleep, who could have just as well eaten or slept in their own home, is
nothing more than a social gesture, and is not true fulfilment of the mitzva of Hachnassat Orchim.[2]
Nevertheless, some authorities do append such social gatherings to the mitzva of Hachnassat Orchim,[3]
insisting that social bonding is to be considered a component of Hachnassat Orchim as well.[4]
Some authorities rule that it is a fulfillment of Hachnassat Orchim to invite over a friend whose spouse is
out of town, or a family whose home is under construction.[5] So too, inviting over newcomers to the
neighbourhood with the purpose of making them feel welcome is also considered to be the mitzva of
Hachnassat Orchim.[6] We learn from none other than the infamous Lavan that relatives should get extra
special treatment when they are our guests.[7]
Though hosting any friend or neighbour is certainly praiseworthy and may be deemed a component of the
mitzva of Hachnassat Orchim,[8] one should also endeavour to provide for one’s guests according to their
financial status and expectations.[9] One should not accept payment for undertaking Hachnassat
Orchim,[10] though one who does so can still claim merit for the mitzva. It is especially auspicious to take
in guests who are Torah scholars.[11] One who is truly kind will actually go out of their way to find guests
who are destitute in order to show them hospitality.[12]
One should not ask one’s guests any questions or even a Dvar Torah if there is a chance that doing so
might embarrass them due to their lack of knowledge.[13] One must escort one’s guests[14] out as they
leave, especially if they may be in unfamiliar surroundings,[15] and provide them with anything they may
need for their journey.[16] In fact, all travellers, or anyone else otherwise away from home, is to be treated
as “needy” with all its usual halachic implications.[17] It is considered especially meritorious to set aside a
room in one’s home specifically for guests to sleep over and use.[18]
It is interesting to note that there are a number of halachot whose regulations are relaxed in honour of
guests.[19] For example, many authorities who ordinarily prohibit one to make ice cubes on Shabbat will
permit doing so in the event that they are needed for guests, and by extension, to better enhance one’s
Shabbat.[20] It is also permitted to manually exert oneself to re-arrange a room in order for guests to sleep
comfortably, something otherwise forbidden on Shabbat.[21] So too, in the event that one is pressed for
time when kashering meat in preparation for cooking, one is permitted to shorten the required salting time
if the meat is being served in honour of guests.[22] It is especially important to be sure to include guests at
holiday meals.[23]
