• Do we have the right apprenticeship
program for the time
• AHRDAs train people but they don’t
get hired due to lack of experience.
Suggestion: need a subsidy program
for incentive to hire.
• Employers want journeypersons or
experienced workers.
• Build the experience into the
training program.
• Mentorship is very important and it
works well.
• Entry level wages are a deterrent.
• Funding agencies have programs to assist
with work experience – connect with
agencies.
• Union relations are necessary.
Overcoming Barriers
What could be done differently to overcome
these barriers
• Customized training designed for client. This
is being done at:
– mining mineral processing (Lab West)
– northern communities, health, (LIP)
– Department of Human Resources, Labour
and Employment (HRLE) helps provide
clients with support they need while
in training.
• Recognize skill levels and approach
employers regardless of employee’s
skills; may be able to work with potential
employees.
• Employers will work with employees to move
into jobs at a lower level and advance
if desirable.
• Employers want AHRDAs to meet to discuss
ways to increase Aboriginal employment in
the area.
• Aboriginal/private sector engagement is
young for many employers. Be patient
and persistent.
• Joint planning process with lead champions
to bring players together.
• Work with individuals and their current
skill levels.
• Build on current skills such as :
– leadership development by the Iron Ore
and the College of North Atlantic
– Welding by Iron Ore and the College of
North Atlantic.
• Provide training as needed.
