“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus…”
Hebrews 12:1-2a
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
From The Principal
Issue 7 - 4 Issue August 3 - 2012 3 April 2011
At last week’s HSC Showcase evenings, Year 12 students presented their major works to a highly impressed
and appreciative audience. Major works include Drama group and solo performances and portfolio
displays, Music performances, Visual Arts body of work displays, Software Design and Development (SDD)
projects as well as History Extension and English Extension projects.
These projects are particularly demanding and, apart from SDD, will be marked ahead of the HSC by Board
of Studies markers. At this stage of the year some of the projects aren’t fully complete. The Showcase
provides students with an audience and in that, a helpful deadline.
Our Food Technology students from Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 catered for the event, under the direction of Mrs
Vukalovich, and assisted by TAS staff. The food was delicious, the service impeccable!
Supporting the evening was a team of Senior School students who assisted with lighting, sound, staging and
ushering. Joanna Axiotis and Nick Farasopoulos were the MCs for the show.
It was a wonderful example of our cooperative and responsible Senior School students working together for
the benefit of others, and very much enjoying themselves in the process!
My thanks to Mr Collyer, Creative and Performing Arts Faculty Coordinator, for his leadership of the
evenings.
Please pray for our Year 12 students as they finish and polish their works ready for marking, and particularly
as they begin their trial HSC exams next week.
There have been many encouraging accomplishments by SGCS students that are mentioned in this
Newsletter, including participation in the Athletics Carnivals, National Jump Rope Championships, Bibles for
the Persecuted day, some creative Textiles work and participation in the World Vision Global Leadership
Convention.
I am enjoying watching some of the Olympic Games in London, seeing what people can achieve as they
commit with perseverance to achieving their personal best.
As we also face opportunities and challenges, it is good to find not only inspiration, but also hope in the
words of the bible from the book of Hebrews:
Mr James Honor
Principal
“…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.
And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,
fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame,
and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners,
so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
The National Rope
Championships
The National Rope Championships were held from 22 to 25
June at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. This competition
involved 400 competitors from around Australia and a
group from Singapore in various speed and freestyle events.
Six students represented our school at this competition. They
were Nathan Chang (Yr 9), Jessica Payne (Yr 8), Josephine
Anugerah (Yr 8), Georgia Clark (Yr 6), Lydia Chang (Yr
4) and Jacqueline Maskito (Yr 4). Last year, at our first
Nationals, these same students placed in the top half of
their age group but were awarded no medals. This year
every student gained either a Silver or Gold medal.
Our students won the following:
Nathan Chang and Jessica Payne: Silver for their pairs
freestyle routine (like a gymnastics floor routine using dance,
gymnastics and aerobic skills whilst skipping with a rope).
Josephine Anugerah and Georgia Clark: Silver for their Pairs
30 second Double Under speed relay.
Lydia Chang and Jacqueline Maskito: Gold for their Pairs 30
second speed relay, Gold for their Pairs 30 second Double
Under speed relay and Gold as the overall 10 and under
Pairs Champions.
These students trained long and hard to achieve these
results at this level of competition. Coaches from other
teams complimented our students, not only on their success
this year, but their improvement as well. The judges also
complimented our students on their attitudes and said that
no matter what happened they always had smiles on their
faces.
I am so proud of their efforts, sportsmanship and grace.
They are a fantastic group to work with and their families
are so supportive. Everyone was so pleased, not just to
win medals this year, but because we stepped up and
improved with everyone achieving PB’s for all events.
Thank you to the school community for your support of the
team. It does make a difference.
Infants
Welcome back to Infants for Term 3. This will be a very busy and eventful term. We have begun to introduce
interactive white boards to the classrooms, with the first two being placed in 1G and 2CL. The other classes will receive theirs
in due time. We have also begun trialling Mathletics (an interactive mathematics program) with a group of Year 2 children.
We hope to extend this once we have established the benefits it provides for our students.
Book Parade - A warm invitation is extended to family and friends to attend our Book Parade on
Tuesday 14 August 2012. Notes have gone home informing parents of the timetable and Sausage Sizzle
lunch on the day. Children will come to school dressed as a book character from a book in the Infants
Library. If you need inspiration, Mrs Brown will have a box of books and suggestions near the Library for
you to get some ideas for the costumes.
Infants
Sport
Hockey
We are holding hockey training
before school this term and the
days and times will be advised as
soon as we have locked them in.
Tennis
Years 1 and 2 will be receiving
4 weeks of tennis instruction this
Term. We look forward to this
initiative by Mr Archer and thank
him for all he does for sports in the
Infants Department.
Swimming
Swimming at Infants starts on Monday 10 September, running each day until
Friday 21 September. Children are required to wear swimmers (a one piece
costume for girls) with a cap and goggles. All children’s clothing, towels, etc,
are to be clearly marked with their name to avoid confusion and loss of items.
Father’s Day Breakfast
A reminder to all dads, uncles and
granddads to keep the morning of Tuesday
28 August free for our Father’s Day Breakfast.
Breakfast will be served from 7.30am. Further
information will be sent home shortly.
Wet Weather
A reminder that in wet weather the
children proceed straight to the Infants
Library and wait there until directed by
the teacher on duty.
Vanuatu
We have seen photos of the children in
Vanuatu wearing the thongs that our
children donated. It was lovely to see the
recipients of the thongs. Thank you to the
Staff and Year 10 students
who went on our behalf and delivered
them.
Parents’ Prayer Meeting
In the next couple of weeks a prayer meeting will commence to pray for staff, students and their families (start date to be
confirmed). This will be held in the LIbrary every second Friday (in the odd weeks – just work out if that’s the week your child
has news or the other week!). The meeting will start just after 9am (when the children have gone into class) until 9.30am.
Please join us (you don’t have to pray out loud) as we thank God for what He is doing at our school and ask Him to continue
to bless us. For more information contact Rachel Norman (Rebekah 2CL and Sarah KR) on 0419 124 174.
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be
anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And
the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Excursion - After Year 2’s visit to the Science Centre and Planetarium, they wrote great recounts, here is a sample...
By Andreas Adamou
Year 2 travelled to Wollongong to
discover stuff. On our arrival we
excitedly walked into the building. First
we went to a bubble and balloon show
and learnt that bubbles are terribly
lazy. After that we spread out and
went upstairs. Upstairs we saw a robotic
dinosaur and after that I saw 6000 bees.
They were alive and had made seven
kinds of honey. We also saw a robotic
elephant and eventually we went into
the movie theatre to see a movie called
“The Secret of the Cardboard Rocket”.
I really enjoyed our whole day.
entered the building. First we saw the
bubbles and balloons show which was
exciting. Next we used the handson
equipment, where I learnt about
conveyor belts. Lastly we saw a show
about stars and planets. I had a really
cool day.
GLANCE
Welcome back to Term 3! Although it was a chilly start to the first day back, the excitement of the children greeting
their friends and sharing holiday stories gave a warm, inviting atmosphere to Junior School.
The “Term At A Glance” highlights what is happening in your child’s school life. These events include our annual Writer’s
Workshop, Book Week, optional ICAS and Westpac Bank Mathematics Competitions, Maths Olympiad, Athletics
Carnivals, Gala Day, Jump Rope for Heart Jump Off, the Father/Child Big Day Out and numerous excursions.
The focus of our learning in Literacy will be Creative Writing. We are looking forward to teaching specific skills and
guiding students through creating their own published stories which we would like to share with you towards the end of
this term.
To give students the experience of an accomplished writer, Ursula Dubosarsky has been invited to conduct our own
“Writers’ Workshop”. She has won many Premier’s Literary Awards for such books as “The Return of the Word Spy” and
“The Terrible Plop”. As each child sees and hears Ursula explore her world of words we are hoping to encourage them to
grow in confidence and competency as thinkers, writers and readers.
Most students are participating in a Reading program which explicitly teaches a method to understand the meaning of
a passage, using the “Here, Hidden and Head” strategy. The children use clue words to locate key facts and practice
writing sentence answers. The ongoing mini tests appear encouraging, although the formal post test will be given at
the end of this term along with assessments to determine reading and spelling ages for each child. The challenge is to
ensure the transfer of the knowledge of the reading skills across other areas of study.
Whether in Reading or Writing, it is the desire of the Junior School to explicitly teach and deeply inspire each child to
hear, feel, see and assess the power of words. The well known educational thinker and writer on multiple intelligences,
Howard Gardner, in his latest work has identified five ‘minds’, one of which is the Synthesising mind. Given the explosion
of words available to our students, they need to be taught how to deal with this volume and complexity of information.
Junior School aims to equip students with specific skills in both Reading and Writing to develop this synthesising mind.
More than that, it is our hope that each child will be challenged to develop a critical understanding of what is written or
illustrated so that they will be able to discern accurately whether what they read is in accordance with God’s Word.
The staff continue to value your prayers and kind words as we, as a Christian community, set our minds on enjoying the
learning journey and...
“One thing I ask of the Lord , this is what I seek:... to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord...”
ATTENTION PARENTS OF YEAR 5 STUDENTS
Welcome to Semester 2. Your child is embarking on the final stage of their journey in Junior School. This stage involves learning
new areas of information, honing Literacy and Mathematical skills, experiencing life on the Gold Fields, participating in the
Transition Camp and increasing their use of technology.
I view this term as a time to strengthen each child’s core skills in preparation for the demands of learning in Middle School.
Mrs Back has been granted school approved leave for Weeks 1 to 3 of this term. Mrs Sandra Kasper will be taking 5B and the
appropriate groups. Mrs Kasper is an experienced, highly qualified teacher, a marker for NAPLAN and a valued member of
our school community.
Thank you for your prayerful support.
Personification - Loneliness
Personify - to make something without feelings
feel emotions like a human
Loneliness was sweeping
through the land. He stopped
at a group of close friends. He
wore a hood that hid his face.
He touched one of them and
whispered in a raspy voice
“she’s cruel to you behind your
back”.
Suddenly the girl burst into bitter
tears. “How could you” she
yelled.
Meanwhile, Loneliness was
already speaking to the next girl. This time he said
“she is a liar, she’s the one being mean. You’ve
done nothing wrong”. The girl turned cold “I’ve done
nothing you nasty beast”. She screamed.
The two girls ran off in different directions knowing that
they would hate and never see each other for the rest
of their lives.
Loneliness was never satisfied so he went off in search
of another friendship.
Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival
Students from Years 3-6 (and some Year 2’s turning 8) gathered at Sylvania Waters Athletic Track on Friday 20 July for the
annual Athletics Carnival. We were blessed with a lovely sunny day and students made the most of the fine weather with
high levels of participation throughout the day.
My sincere thanks go to all the hard working parents who volunteered to help out on the day. Your support was very much
appreciated. I would also like to thank Mr Munro and the Year 9 PASS students who assisted in many areas at the carnival.
All our volunteer helpers made the day the success that it was.
The winning house for the 2012 Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival was BLUE. Congratulations!
The CSSA Zone Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 2 August at The Crest Athletics Centre, Bass Hill.
Middle School
Welcome back to Term 3! Our students and staff returned to school refreshed and re-energised eager to embark on the
journey of Semester 2 together. As with all school terms, the calendar is filled with many opportunities for students to broaden
their experiences, refine their skills, extend and deepen their relationships and look beyond themselves. Sporting opportunities
in the form of carnivals and gala days, Music Camp for band and choir students, the State Robo Cup and Tournament of the
Minds competitions, Daffodil and Hoodie days and English and Mathematics competitions are but a few examples.
This Term we are also hosting an all day drama workshop for schools in our region, who, like us, are entering a team in the
Tournament of the Minds competition. Also, the acclaimed author, Gary Crew will be speaking with Year 8 as they undertake
a study of his works in English. As Mr Gillman has penned, English in Middle School continues to engage and enthral students.
Our end of year examinations will take place in the final ten days of this Term and students have taken home their exam
schedules. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Home Room Teacher to discuss or clarify any areas of concern that
may arise as the Term progresses.
THE SKIPPEROOS
VISIT THE RIVERINA
This year saw the Middle School Jump Rope For Heart
Team (the Skipperoos) venture into the Riverina district to
demonstrate how to use a skipping rope to stay healthy
and to do amazing tricks. During the three day trip we visited
seven schools, completed 7 x 20 minute performances, three
workshops and learnt many interesting facts about the area, its
history, the floods last March and the impact of having family in
the Defence Forces.
The schools we visited represented all types, from public and
private, and all socio economic areas. All the students and
staff that we met were friendly and amazed at our skills. Most
of all they appreciated the efforts the students put in to talk
to their students and the enthusiasm that they displayed in
their performances. Whereever we went our students were
complimented on their behaviour and attitudes (including the
RSL staff after dinner).
The Riverina area was beautiful and many memories were
created, including a lesson on “Dad and Dave” and the
legend of the “Dog on the Tucker Box”. Our students enjoyed
learning about “country” culture and spending time with the
various students after each performance.
Nathan Chang and Lucy Benn (Yr 9) also accompanied
us on the trip as mentors. They were outstanding in their
encouragement and care for the team and were a valuable
asset on the trip.
Our trip was extremely successful and I am very proud of our
team members and what they each bring to the team to
make it richer. The trip however could not have happened
without the support of
Mrs Douglas and Mrs Clark who accompanied us, made
sure our stomachs were
contented and gladly
assisted us whenever the
need arose. Thank you also
to the school community for
your ongoing support and
encouragement.
Metaphors, Monsters and Mystery
A simple question, it may seem
To ask your child about their day.
And so you wait with baited breath,
To hear just what they have to say.
And somehow, “Ugh” is all you get,
As if the grunt will help explain
The vast amount of learning done
And stimulation of the brain.
And so we thought (to help you out)
That we might let you in to see
The learning planned in Middle School.
So this is English in Term 3:
Year 6 begins our escapade
By starting work on written verse.
Exploring poems, rhyme and form
And language choices far from terse.
Some limericks and couplets too,
And sonnets speaking love of yore.
A torrent tide of dancing words
Through simile and metaphor.
(It might be wise to stay here tuned
For coming on in later weeks
The privilege could be all yours
To sight some poetry sneak peeks!)
Tis here that those in Year 6 learn
The beauty of their words unfurled,
To capture through the choice of phrase
The majesty of our God’s world.
Year 7 left two weeks ago
To magic worlds of quests and gold.
And so far have become entrenched
In timeless tales of days of old.
In fantasy the students find
A complex web of Bible truths
Presented through the twisting yarns
Of dragons and courageous youths.
Now armed with knowledge of the form
Year 7 work to understand
The power of the written script
To craft descriptive, detailed lands,
And thus present to teachers proud
Their stories to be shared and told.
And grace the world of literature
With villains cruel and heroes bold.
Year 8 this term have started out
Investigating Gary Crew.
And seeking to uncover why
His writing combines old and new:
From shipwreck tales to mystic birds
And borrowed facts from history.
To keep his target audience
Engaged through cryptic mystery.
But that’s not all! There’s more to do!
In essay form, they then must show
How Crew can hold his readers firm
And build them up with themes of hope.
The texts will also help provide
Some conversation starters too:
How “self-enlightenment” is not
The key to finding out God’s truth.
And there you have it all laid out -
The meaning of the grunts and groans.
The monosyllabic response
Is simply translated as so:
“Why, thank you Mum, my day was great!
My English teacher’s really cool!
I’ve learnt so much in fun new ways
I sure do love to go to school!”
By Mr Gillman
On 14 July the Archaeologists’ Excellence Group went on an excursion to two different museums: the Nicholson
Museum and the Hyde Park Barracks Museum.
In the Nicholson Museum we were able to touch real artefacts from Pompeii, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece
and prehistoric times. We each chose an artefact of our choice and completed an analysis on it, including
answering questions and drawing it in detail. We also saw real mummies, sarcophagus coffins and statues.
After a rush through wet weather we went to the Hyde Park Barracks Museum. The first highlight in the program
was when we got to tag, draw and collect information on artefacts which were dug up in 1979 on the site. It
was great fun to learn the process of finding artefacts and analysing them in archaeology. The next highlight
was when we went in the Hyde Park Barracks. It was well preserved and cleverly built. The structure of the
museum was stripped back to show the laborious work of the convicts that used to lived there. I learnt that
being flogged was gruesome and that the hammocks were so uncomfortable to rest or sleep in. I am so glad
that I’m not in the convict phase!
YRS 7-12 ATHLETIC CARNIVAL
On 5 June Years 7-12 travelled out to Barden Ridge (also known as the fridge) on a day where reports were suggesting a
“weather event” to come through with high winds and heavy rain.
We decided to go ahead with the hope we could get most of the carnival completed before the weather came in. Prayers
were answered, with the rain holding off until the very last race at 2:30pm.
Students and teachers were all in good spirits, especially considering the cold weather. We had a high participation rate in
most events, mainly due to students wanting to keep warm I think!
Congratulations to BLUE house for being the champion house for the athletics carnival. Well done to all blue house
captains and their members.
BOYS SOCCER GALA DAY - Thursday 7 June
Due to the terrible weather, the competition was moved to the new five a side fields at Endeavour High School. This being
the case, we had to split each team in two and field two smaller sides. The smaller fields did not help our sides playing style
with fast players unable to use their speed against other teams. We were also missing a couple of very capable players
through injury. All teams played well and displayed good sportsmanship on the field. The Under 15 A team lost a very tough
semi final and were disappointed to not make the final. Overall SGCS was awarded runners up in both the Under 15 and
Open competition. Not an ideal carnival due to the poor weather, but overall, it was a successful day. Well done to all the
boys, they played.
NETBALL GALA DAY UNDER 15’s
On Monday 18 June, eleven bleary eyed but keen students (and one teacher) gathered outside the front of the School at
6:30am to make the bus journey to Penrith, where temperatures of 5°C awaited us. The girls, ranging from Year 7 to Year
9, were all very eager to complete their warm up in preparation for their first game and to help combat the cold weather
on their bare legs. Throughout the day, the girls demonstrated exceptional athleticism, teamwork and energy as they
represented the school with incredible spirit and pride. It didn't take long before the temperature heated up and so did
the competition. The girls played very well, with a win over Carinya Christian School and narrow losses to Wycliffe, Chalton
and Maitland. The day was very successful and I want to extend my congratulations to the girls on the way they played
and the manner in which they conducted themselves. Also, a huge thanks to the parents made the trip out to Penrith to
support and encourage the girls. With most of the team still eligible for the Under 15’s next year, I look forward seeing what
we are capable of. Congratulations to the following girls:
BIBLES FOR THE PERSECUTED
On 22 June, Year 12 Prefects, with the help of the
Year 5 Leaders, ran a fundraising day for “Bibles
for the Persecuted” which is run through the Bible
League.
Students and teachers participated so Christians
in persecuted countries can receive Bibles to
encourage them through their suffering.
God blessed us with fine weather and generous
hearts. A mufti day with a gold coin donation, a
bake stall at recess (with cakes made and donated
by Year 12) and a sausage sizzle at lunch, along with
many generous donations raised $1142.00, which will
purchase 103 Bibles.
Students and teachers have also been praying for
Christians being persecuted overseas.
Thank you to everyone who gave money, prayed,
helped and served. Together we have been able
to bless Christians overseas with a necessity that we
take for granted.
TEXTILE HAPPENINGS
Year 10 had an amazing time in Textiles during Semester 1. Firstly they went on an excursion to see the 2011 HSC
Texstyle Exhibition at ‘The Muse’ in Sydney. This helped to develop their inspiration for their first project of Costume
design. Following this they did a Fashion drawing workshop which enhanced their drawing and rendering skills
greatly.
At the end of last term we visited Whitehouse Institute of Design, where we viewed an Open Day and Fashion
Parade. Our Year 10 students were delighted to view exciting fashions on the catwalk, meet famous Australian
designers like Akira Isogawa and meet lecturers and current students.
Year 9 were also busy last term making pyjamas. Their sleepwear featured a collar, buttons and buttonholes and
sleeves. They each were very pleased and proud of their work. The best thing being that they will be happily
worn.
Year 9 Elective Geography at the
World Vision Global Leadership
Convention
On Friday 1 June, Year 9 Elective Geography attended the World Vision
Global Leaders Conference. Along with over 1000 other students from
schools all over Sydney, the students learnt about Ethiopia and the Horn
of Africa and how they are suffering a severe food shortage. Students
participated in a simulation game for a couple of hours. Each student
was allocated into a country or company. Each round of the game,
they had to produce food from supplies they were given and could
trade with the other countries/companies. Each country/company
was allocated different amounts of food and money based on real
life statistics. As the game progressed, many groups found that there
was not enough food to feed all members of their country/company
resulting in “deaths”. Many countries also struggled to buy food for their
citizens because the price of food had risen so dramatically.
Although a “fun” game, it had a powerful message. There is enough
food in the world for everyone (just as there was in the game), but it is
unequally distributed as a result of a wide range of factors. Students
found that naturally, many people playing the game started to be
greedy. This helped them understand how greed in our world can have
such devastating effects. Nearly 1 billion people worldwide suffer from
chronic hunger and about 4.5 million people living in the Horn of Africa
are currently struggling to survive due to a severe drought.
Year 9 Elective Geography are now running the 40 Hour Famine in
Middle School and Senior School. If you would like information about
Students make final of
inaugural Kogarah Art Prize
Congratulations to our students whose art
was selected for the inaugural Kogarah
Art Prize.
Students Amelia Liu, Mayra Lobos-Munos
and Pat Dibben from Year 10 and Eli
Walker and Isabella Simonovski from
Year 11 all made the final for the Youth
Art Award. The students used natural
implements with ink and pastel to depict
a still life.
Kogarah Council reported that they
received over 230 entries from all over
Australia. Barry Pearce, Emeritus Curator
of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of New
South Wales judged the prize selecting 35
paintings for the Exhibition. 21 works were
selected as part of the Youth Art Award.
Our students’ art work was exhibited at the
Kogarah Library and Cultural Centre from
June 26 - July 5.
