editor:
Welcome to the latest edition of PFM. As usual it has been a busy month for facilities
management and this time I’d like to talk a little bit about how the credit crunch is hitting the
industry as well as some new developments on the environmental side of things.
Lets start with some breaking news as we go to press. More than half of UK contract cleaning
companies have reported no growth over the past 12-months. Zilch.
According to MTW research a third are now considered to be ‘at risk’. Not surprising as only 45%
of them experienced any growth at all during the year.
The report warns that in 2009 the industry is likely to decline in terms of capital expenditure and
spending on equipment; assets could also decline.
If you work on the supply side of the business, the report recommends targeting the few
companies that are still performing. Lets hope things start to turn around sooner rather than later.
The same has to be said for the UK construction sector, which the RICS predicts will shed around
300,000 jobs in the coming year.
In light of this the CBI is now calling on the government to boost spending on social housing and
the Building Schools for the Future project.
It has put forward a ten-point plan to keep business working and to safeguard jobs and help
position the economy for recovery.
Increasing costs are already starting to play their part, and local government project adviser 4Ps
says that over a quarter of councils are already seeing costs rising for school, leisure and waste
management projects. Over a third are reporting project delays too.
However, it is not all doom and gloom and despite the current financial crisis, many British
companies have identified sustainability as a growth area over the next three years.
The UK Green Building Council’s latest poll shows that 90% of respondents believe sustainability
will either grow as an issue or stay at the same level in spite of the credit crunch.
According to the poll, over a quarter said the financial crisis is having no effect on their
sustainability plan. Another half said sustainability was now an even bigger focus for them.
Nearly all said the government must stick to its green targets, despite the crunch.
Paul King of the UKGBC said: “I think we’ve seen an end to ‘boom and bust’ for sustainability.
This time it’s going to remain high on the political and corporate agenda.”
Even so, elsewhere, there was a lot of hot air being talked about how realistic zero carbon
buildings really are.
According to new research by BSRIA, over 60% of scientists, building services designers and
other industry big wigs believe the government’s targets for zero carbon buildings are unrealistic.
The deadline for all UK public sector buildings to become zero carbon is 2018. However, more
that 62% of respondents to the poll say this target will not be met.
Staggeringly, just over a third of those taking part said they even had a zero carbon plan in place
to meet this deadline.
Let’s hope for the sake of our environment, and our kid’s future, that they can still turn it around
on time.
Ending on a positive note, a new scheme called ‘Universities that Count’ has hit the ground
running.
Under the initiative 64 universities have agreed to start to recording figures for a corporate
responsibility index and an environmental index.
Iain Patton, executive director for the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges,
said: “This agenda is here to stay.”
Nilfisk-CFM supplies
Saint-Gobain with
first ‘Glass’ cleaning
system
Acentralised vacuum cleaning
system, designed and installed by
Nilfisk-CFM, is enabling glass
manufacturer Saint-Gobain Glass to
clean production lines and recover
waste product for recycling at its
Eggborough plant in Yorkshire.
At the heart of the fully automated system is a
Nilfisk-CFM industrial suction unit that can collect
up to a tonne of material per hour. The unit is
connected to approximately 400 metres of
pipework with 45 suction points located around
Saint-Gobain’s batch plant to allow simultaneous
cleaning in different places. The vacuum is
activated automatically when an operator attaches
a hose to the nearest suction point for fast and
convenient cleaning wherever it is needed.
Recovered product is discharged into a central
hopper, which incorporates a manual diverter
valve to separate material for recycling rather than
disposal as required.
Before investing in a Nilfisk-CFM fixed vacuum
recovery system, Saint-Gobain used mobile
vacuum cleaners to deal with spillages of sand,
limestone, soda ash and other materials used in
the glass making process.
Nilfisk-CFM worked closely with Saint-Gobain
during the design of the custom-built cleaning
system. Special features include bulk conveying
nozzles for areas requiring bulk removal of waste
material to avoid blockages, and level sensors in
the double dump valve system to prevent
overloading during discharge. Nilfisk-CFM also
undertook installation and commissioning of the
system on site and provided full operator training
as part of the package. RR No: 115020
Spitfire finds wi-fi solution for geographers
Spitfire, the leading voice and data
solution provider, has installed a wifi
Internet access solution for the Royal
Geographical Society at the society’s
headquarters in Kensington, London.
Spitfire supplied and installed a Cisco
4402 Wireless LAN Controller with
Aironets to provide wireless Internet
access for staff, members and visitors
within the building.
Established in 1830, the Royal Geographical Society
seeks to advance geographical science and support
its practitioners. With about 15,000 members it is the
largest and most active scholarly geographical
society in the world. The society welcomes 150,000
people a year to events and activities for both
members and the public. All will now be able to
access the Internet via the 10M wi-fi circuit provided
by Spitfire.
SCA has given away four
mountain bikes following a
competition held at the
ISSA-Interclean exhibition.
UK winner Michael Flawn from
Numatic International was presented
with his prize at the company’s
headquarters in Chard, Somerset, by
SCA Tissue Europe account
manager Anne Brake.
Mike, a research and development
specifications technician with
Numatic, was one of around 800
visitors to the Tork stand at ISSA-Interclean who
took part in the company’s carbon footprint game.
Participants entered their home details into a
computer to discover the level of CO2 emissions
produced by their journey to the exhibition.
Numatic International, which manufactures vacuum
cleaners, janitorial trolleys and mopping systems,
has been a Tork customer for more than a year via
distributor Spot On Supplies. Numatic chose Tork
network solutions together with after sales service
and support. As an existing customer the Royal
Geographical Society benefits from Spitfire’s
comprehensive service that extends from designing
and implementing a telephony and data
communications network to providing line rental and
call billing, with complete after sales technical
support and customer service.
Commenting on the wi-fi solution, Dominic Estall, IT
Manager for the Royal Geographical Society said,
“With Internet access for e-mail and information
becoming ever more essential, it was important for
us to be able to provide wi-fi Internet for our
members and other visitors. We particularly wanted
this implemented prior to our annual conference,
held in August and Spitfire we are able to do this.
We are pleased with the result.”
‘Green’ SCA presents four
mountain bike prizes
PHS Greenleaf launch new range of
Christmas trees and accessories
including LED lights providing safer
and greener festive lighting.
Poor old Father Christmas, he’s seen it all -
flashing reindeers, inflatable snowmen and
singing polar bears. The trouble is Santa’s
been around so long that it’s hard to find
something original to make him smile.
Dusting off the same decorations year
after year just doesn’t do the job. Thank
goodness for PHS Greenleaf, without
which St Nicholas might give up
altogether and head back up North.
Having been providing Christmas
décor to commercial premises for
more than 13 years, PHS
Greenleaf, the UK’s leading plant
rental specialist, is well known to
Father Christmas. He knows that
every year the Greenleaf
Christmas range is expanded and
products because of the
manufacturer’s environmental
credentials, says SCA Tissue
Europe’s Anne Brake.
SCA was named the world’s second
greenest company in June 2007 by
the Independent newspaper and
EIRIS. SCA has also appeared in
the Innovest Global 100 most
sustainable companies list for four
consecutive years since the list
began, and consistently tops the
WWF tissue manufacturers’
rankings.
Numatic is also at the forefront of
today’s environment movement. The company’s
“green” products include the Henry and Hetty
AutoSave vacuum cleaners, said to save energy by
50 per cent.
The other three mountain bike winners in the Tork
carbon footprint game were Rui Duarte from T Nolen
in Portugal; Carles Marine from Mesnet in Spain,
and Rodriguez Ruben from CD Net in Belgium.
Dreaming of a Green Christmas
improved to include new ideas and colour schemes
to entertain staff, visitors, customers and travellers
from the North Pole. What’s more, the PHS
Greenleaf elves will design, install and collect all
your decorations leaving you to relax and enjoy
the festive period.
The 2008 range, including hand-decorated
trees, wreaths, garlands and florals,
introduces three enchanting new themes -
Nordic Blue, Winter Shimmer and Classic
Cranberry. Many of the ranges are
supplied with LED lights, providing a safer,
brighter and sharper light. Using less
electricity than traditional tungsten lights.
So this year, give Father Christmas a
gift for a change and use PHS
Greenleaf Christmas trees and
festive décor. Unfortunately giant
inflatable, singing polar bears,
flashing or otherwise are not
available. Sorry!
Spitfire’s SIP Communicator
delivers hosted telephony
with no capex!
Spitfire, the leading Internet
Telephony Service Provider (ITSP),
has launched a hosted telephony
service with phone system functionality
provided remotely by Spitfire.
Called SIP Communicator, it only requires SIP
compatible handsets, making the service an
extremely cost-effective solution for business startups
and small businesses that are growing and
anticipate moving premises or are spread over
multiple sites.
SIP Communicator has been designed as an endto-end
service and is ideal for small start-up SMEs
and multisite operations such as retail branch
networks or small businesses employing home
workers. Where a business has home workers or
Cancer Research UK’s
IS department trials new
shared desk scheme
Charity using Condeco’s
desk booking software to
enable flexi-working
The UK’s leading charity is piloting a
new flexi-working scheme within the
IS Department at its head offices in
central London.
Cancer Research UK has joined
forces with RNM Systems to
implement the desk booking module of
its Condeco software suite, which is
enabling the IS department to manage
its office space more efficiently.
Staff numbers within the department
were, at times, flexing up to 200 to
cope with large projects. There were
140 desks available and allocated to
staff but as a good percentage of
these staff were regularly working offsite,
the IS Department was finding
that its office space was vastly underutilised.
With no more space available
the department needed to expand its
workforce without expanding its
estate.
workers in many different locations, then SIP
Communicator provides real business and
economic benefits because staff can call each other
free of charge and incoming calls can be routed to
any location.
Snom handsets are provided, which include an LCD
display, speakerphone and message-waiting
indicator. Alternatively a Counterpath Softphone
client can be installed on a PC or laptop for use with
a headset and microphone. There is a monthly
service charge but the costs are estimated to be
about fifty percent less expensive than a
conventional phone system based solution.
SIP Communicator offers all the usual phone
system features of holding and transferring calls, but
has a number of additional benefits. The system can
be configured via the Internet, allowing change of
feature set-ups as and when required, without
incurring any engineering charges. Multiple hunt
groups can be set up for incoming calls to ring
telephones simultaneously or sequentially. SIP
Communicator also provides voice mail, autoattendant
and conference call functionality.
Users can be located anywhere and provided with
phone numbers for any location, so an employee
based in Glasgow can have a London phone
number and vice versa.
Condeco’s user-friendly desk booking
software will ensures that the desks
within Cancer Research UK’s IS
Department space are fully utilised,
eliminating the unnecessary wastage
associated with empty desks.
Jane Swindle, IS Business Change
Manager at Cancer Research UK,
said: “We’re delighted to be working
alongside RNM Systems on this new
project. Condeco has the potential to
allow us to raise office utilisation,
reduce our energy bill, reduce our
carbon footprint and, in the process,
make real estate savings.”
Paul Statham, managing director at
RNM Systems, said: “Cancer
Research UK is the largest and one of
most well-known charities in the
country. It is an organisation that is
constantly seeking to reduce costs
and, as a result, needs to ensure it is
making full use of the office space it
has available.”
Solaglas Windowcare
ready to come to
retailer’s rescue
National emergency glazing
company Solaglas Windowcare,
part of the Saint-Gobain Group, has
launched a campaign targeting
retailers that are unlikely to have
access to 24-hour emergency glazing.
This follows reports that a major
supplier in its sector is experiencing
severe difficulties.
Solaglas Windowcare is warning that in the run up
to Christmas and through the New Year sales
period retailers will have an urgent need to have
damaged windows re-glazed and ready for
display, and has launched its campaign under the
heading of ‘Let us come to your rescue’. The
company is offering a dedicated emergency
helpline manned by a specialist team that has
been formed to manage increased demand.
The campaign will be backed by business-tobusiness
advertising and promotional activity.
Solaglas Windowcare estimates that there could
now be as many as 400 retail outlets with
damaged boarded-up shop fronts on high streets
across Britain. These companies are now without
a recognised national supplier to provide
professional re-glazing services.
Managing director, Ian Davy said that difficulties at
its main competitor in the retail market leave
Solaglas Windowcare as the only company with
national coverage that can deliver the quality of
service large retailers demand.
Timber firm detail trio of innovative products
Leading timber firm Arnold Laver
Timber World has released details of
three new innovative products which
could revolutionise the UK market.
The first to be launched by the timber experts is
Danback which is already making waves in the
United States and is set to strengthen the
company’s portfolio of services.
Danback is a unique wood backing product that
provides superior connection and pullout strength for
handrails, shelves and other wall fixtures using a
flexible wood backing plate system.
Arnold Laver holds the sole manufacturing and
distribution rights for the product in the United
Kingdom under patent licence. The company will
also have the scope to expand into Europe.
Danback claims the system reduces installation time
by up to 90 per cent, provides extra screw pullout
strength for heavy-duty backing applications, works
with most major manufacturers and meets all
specifications for commercial and residential
applications.
Arnold Laver has also introduced an innovative new
product called Fotoply, a revolutionary panel sheet
made of timber on which any image or artwork can
be applied.
The panels are made from lightweight European
Lanes for Drains is not only the UK’s
largest independent drainage
specialist, it’s also a leader in no-dig,
drain and pipe relining technology.
Having adopted the technology at an early stage in
the mid-90s, Lanes is now firmly established as a
leading reline specialist in the UK. The team
regularly trials new materials and techniques and
works closely with international manufacturers and
industry bodies, frequently hitting the headlines with
its ground-breaking projects.
Recent notable achievements have included relining
pressurised rising main sewers, and relining, with a
single liner, a drain which changed shape part way
spruce plywood and help to reduce road miles,
carbon emissions and are recyclable.
Danback and Fotoply two of Arnold Laver’s main
products which were on show at one of the timber
industry’s largest events, Interbuild, which was held
at the NEC in Birmingham from 26 – 30 October.
Additionally, Arnold Laver has introduced a series of
pioneering door servicing centres offering design,
manufacture and technical support around the
country for both domestic and commercial
properties.
The entire process is carefully controlled and
monitored, from the selection of raw materials,
though bespoke design and precision machining, to
management to its Leeds site,
continuing a partnership first
established over 24 years ago.
Dalkia will design and install new burners and a
duplex water softening system to serve the steam
plant vital for Rhodia’s production. The contract also
encompasses fuel supply, and the management of
feed water treatment and the high and low pressure
steam raising plants, enabling cost control, ensuring
availability of utilities and maximising energy
efficiency. In order to ensure high service levels and
support production, the service is continually
monitored and measured against KPIs. The new
components of this contract build on the long-term
development of the plant by Dalkia, over the 24 year
history of the company’s relationship with Rhodia.
This long-standing contract has seen an extended
process of upgrading taking place at the Leeds site,
beginning when Dalkia initially replaced the plant’s
through from round to box, before reverting to round.
(Full case histories and press information will be
available in due course.)
Lanes relines full sewers and drains ranging from
225mm to 900mm in diameter. Localised repairs to
specific sections of drain may be carried out using a
technique known as patching, which is suitable for
pipes from 100mm up to 1250mm diameter.
Lanes was first in the UK to invest in the
revolutionary Panoramo 3D Optoscanner camera,
which gives a truly panoramic CCTV drain survey.
Whereas conventional pan and tilt cameras rely on
the operator to see and record images, Panoramo
sees and records everything in one pass.
Developed especially for CCTV surveys of lateral
sewers and drains, the LISY Sat Cam was another
first for Lanes. It’s quick and cost effective to CCTV
survey laterals directly from a mainline sewer or
drain with LISY, without having to access each
individual property. Reader Reply No: 115054
Dalkia and Rhodia clean
up with energy savings
heavy oil boiler with what at the time was a much
more economical coal-fired boiler. As the contract
progressed, a gas and oil-burning boiler superseded
the coal plant, and in turn was replaced by a more
environmentally sound high-pressure gas boiler.
This equipment has remained in operation until this
most recent contract extension, and will now benefit
from more efficient electrically controlled burners.
All aboard with Vision Text at
Portsmouth
There is no more need for semaphore
at the Royal Navy Dockyards in
Portsmouth since the introduction of a
state of the art electronic display at the
naval base, supplied by Surrey based
Vision–Text Electronic Displays.
Two external full matrix RGB displays have been
installed which provide easily updateable information
at the security entrance points to the base following
extensive discussions between ‘Technology House’,
IT solution providers to the Royal Navy and Mike Le
Grange of Vision–Text. These discussions involved
numerous site visits and demonstrations of the
technology to both ‘Technology House’ and the
Royal Navy. The decision to use the high spec RGB
LED displays as opposed to a more simple solution
A major plus
from C.K Tools
Innovating the market with
yet another UK first, C.K
tools - major supplier of
quality tools for professional
trades - has extended its 22-
strong collection of Tool
Systems with the
introduction of the much
anticipated Technician’s Tool
Case PLUS - C.K’s most
rugged Tool Case ever.
Understanding the often mucky
conditions of building sites and
industrial environments in which many
electricians, engineers and technicians
work, the exceptional C.K Technician’s
Tool Case PLUS features a
waterproof, rubber base designed
specifically to keep tools protected
and dry when placed on wet surfaces.
was based upon the viewing distances required and
the necessity to be able to display coloured graphics
including logos and images. All this was achieved
using the displays own standard IMPOSA software
package thus saving time and money by not having
to write bespoke software.
Previous investigations into the installation of such a
product had been seriously compromised by
budgetary restraint; however the new IMPOSA
system has been specifically designed to provide
high end use at a highly competitive price not
normally associated with such outstanding
performance, durability and reliability.
These new displays are compatible with several
system configurations, they can display content
asynchronously, VGA images synchronously and
video images independently depending on the
application.
The really clever part of the new external version of
the IMPOSA Screens is their modular format which
allows the screen to be configured into various sizes
depending on the number of cabinets used.
The products require standard installation structures
and each display supplied includes all accessories
that may be required making the installation simple
and convenient. From the initial agreement to
proceed with the purchase to actual commissioning
of the installation, it took only four weeks, thus being
delivered on time and on budget.
Unlike any plastic based tool
bags currently available,
C.K’s rubberised base, which
runs across the entire Tool
Systems range, will not crack
or split on impact, even in the
cold. This innovation is not
only easily wiped clean but
also prevents scratches and
scuffing, meaning the
Technician’s Tool Case PLUS
stays smarter for much
longer.
Reinforced pocket stitching
teamed with tougher heavy-duty zips
ensure this revolutionary Tool Case
works even harder, keeping tools
secure and easily accessible.
For added convenience, the ground
breaking C.K Technician’s Tool Case
PLUS benefits from a detachable
carry strap for ease in transporting
tools from one job to the next. Its
shorter, flexible handle, which can be
secured together for ease, has also
been improved, and is now even more
comfortable.
The robust C.K Technician’s Tool Case
PLUS joins the full C.K Tool System
range, which has been designed to
work together as a ‘mix and match’
package for tradesmen to create their
own personally designed tool system.
Completed in November 2007, the
building control installation at the
Radisson SAS Waterfront Hotel, Jersey,
set records for the controls supplier,
Priva Building Intelligence, and for the
M&E contractor, Bailey Building
Services, a division of NG Bailey Ltd.
Ben Seabourne, applications engineer for Bailey
Building Services and project manager for the
controls installation: “It proved to be our largest
integration project with the Priva system interacting
with 250 VRFs, over 40 meters and a Fidelio hotel
booking system, all of which came complete with
different communications protocols: the VRFs use
LonWorks, the meters use Modbus and the Fidelio
has its own proprietary protocol.” For Priva, this may
have been their largest joint integration project
working with Bailey, but the multi-lingual
communications challenge is an every day
accomplishment for their controllers.
250 Toshiba variable refrigerant flow (VRF) split air
conditioners have been installed to provide heating
and cooling to the bedrooms and public areas. “All
heating and cooling requirements are provided by
the splits, with air handling units (AHU) supplying
background ventilation, there are no radiators in any
of the rooms,” said Ben Seabourne. The Bailey
design team recommended AHUs complete with
plate heat exchanges, run around pumps and
inverters on the supply
and extract fans, all of which
contribute to the hotel’s excellent
carbon footprint.
Over forty meters provide a profile of
energy consumption. Due to the
integration
accounting, business sales or transfers.
As well as bringing peace of mind through the
accuracy and integrity of its asset register service
tailored to the specific requirement of each client,
the stock and supply chain management specialist
can also provide a powerful secure data
management tool in a wide range of hardware and
software, including electronic tagging, bar-coding,
scanners and analysis software capable of
interfacing with internal systems.
Reader Reply No: 115086
Record breaking hotel integration
possibilities offered by Priva controllers, which
includes Modbus, Bailey proved that specifying
Modbus meters, even though they were slightly
more expensive than traditional meters, would be
more cost effective in the long-term. This is due to
the reduced cabling required. “The RS485 port that
is standard on all Pnva controllers meant that we
could connect the meters directly to the building
management system (BMS),” explained Ben
Seabourne, “and connection to the BMS really was
a case of unpacking the meters and plugging them
into the system.”
The Fidelio booking software manages guests’
heating and power supplies. Linked to the BMS,
heat and power to the rooms are enabled dependent
on whether the room is unoccupied, on standby
waiting occupation, or occupied. While waiting for
the guest to book-in, their room is held in standby
mode with a wide heating/cooling dead band of
between 12ºC and 28ºC. Heating and cooling is only
introduced to the room should the temperature drift
outside this dead band. On checking-in at reception,
the dead band for the guest’s room is narrowed to
18ºC to 24ºC providing comfort control on their
entry. A local controller enables the guest to fine
tune the room’s temperature to suit their specific
needs.
“It makes sense to integrate where possible: capital
and installation costs are reduced and access to
data across the building services is much
improved. Priva has recognised this and
designed its controllers to enable an
easy and secure connection,” concluded
Ben Seabourne.
The Cleaning Show 2009 –
NEC, 10th–12th March 2009
“Cleaning through the credit crunch....”
The BCCE Ltd, a company jointly
owned by The British Cleaning
Council and Quartz Publishing &
Exhibitions Ltd, is staging the Cleaning
Show 2009, from 10th – 12th March at
the NEC, Birmingham.
2009 is set to be a challenging year; with “credit
crunch” and “recession” making regular headlines.
An example of cost saving products being launched
at the show is the Miele Professional PW 5064. This
powerful machine can reprocess 6.5kg of mops or
cloths in just 42 minutes – and also doubles their
longevity.
From Celing Pro there is the innovative CPI solution
- a ‘spray on mist’. This cleaning process saves over
70% of the cost of replacement ceiling tiles.
The Mini-Bowser, from Demon International Ltd, is
Shop Direct goes
hi-tech to reduce energy
consumption
The UK’s leading online
and home shopping
retailer, Shop Direct Group,
has gone hi-tech in a bid to
reduce its energy wastage
and CO2 emissions.
The company has used Plogg, the
plug-in wireless energy meter from
Energy Optimizers, to achieve
electricity savings worth £500 per year
for each of the refrigerators at its new
headquarters in Speke, Liverpool. The
move has also reduced CO2
emissions by 22 tonnes annually.
Unlike most smart meters, Plogg can
monitor the energy consumption of
individual appliances over time, and it
is this feature that has enabled the
savings to be identified and
implemented.
During 2007, Shop Direct embarked
For most of us water is still a free commodity and
The Meleco Mop from the Anser Group needs only
water. It does not require any chemicals, so savings
are significant.
The Cleaning Show 2009 will be “hosting” many
such products and services, great news for Facilities
Managers and Contract Cleaning companies keen to
improve P&L performance.
Time is an extremely valuable commodity: visitors
are serious enough to invest their time in attending
The Cleaning Show, whilst exhibitors expend their
time and resources to offer the convenience of a
“one stop shop”.
The 2009 event is set to be the biggest ever,
building on the success of the last show (in 2007)
when visitor numbers increased by 41% from 2005,
to exceed 12,039. The Cleaning Show 2009 will
feature the third Innovation Awards, to honour the
latest advances in the business, chosen by a panel
of experts from a wide range of industries. The CBA
(formally Britain’s Cleanest Award), the Cleaning
Competition and a show favourite, Terry Burrows
‘Window Cleaning Competition.
on a group-wide energy
efficiency drive to clamp down on
unnecessary energy costs and
carbon emissions. Initially all the
lighting was changed to lowpower
LEDs, enforced out-ofhours
auto-shutdown was
implemented on desktop PCs,
and water heaters were fitted
with timers.
The company then turned its attention
to the ten refrigerators in the staff
canteen, which serves the 1600 staff
on site. A pair of Energy Optimizers’
Bluetooth-based Ploggs was used to
evaluate the electricity consumption of
the refrigerators.
By installing timers on the
refrigerators, Shop Direct was able to
eliminate the power wastage without
affecting the cold drinks served in the
canteen. Programming the local
electricity tariff into the Plogg software
has revealed that this simple measure
will save the company around £500
per fridge per year, for a total annual
saving of £5000.
Shop Direct Group plans to use Plogg
to identify further cost savings across
its sites, including its two customer
data centres. RR No: 115095
Unique to the European market, powertherm’s
engine technology gives 85.5% package efficiency
with thermal recovery, enabling the units to provide
an outstanding energy output compared to fuel
consumption as well as shrink a company’s carbon
footprint.
Utilising a low emission natural gas engine,
powertherm offers a pre-engineered package
design, which reduces up-front engineering, site
design and installation costs. The package design
encompasses all CHP components within an
acoustic enclosure thereby providing very low noise
output (68 dB(A) @ 7 M) in plant room environments
together with neatness of design and ease of
access.
Powertherm will eliminate the possibility of brown or
black outs as well as improve the quality of power
delivered to businesses. The system’s synchronising
controllers also enables powertherm to run in sync
with a standby generator.
control system tightly manages both active and
reactive loads, allowing for intelligent load/current
sharing between each individual phase.
Typically when running in parallel, conventional UPS
systems work on a Master/Slave principle, which
means that should the master UPS fail the whole
system fails. However, with the T7 each system is
connected to the other via a robust CAN BUS
connection and is supplied with its own parallel
monitoring system thereby removing a single point
of failure.
The T7 Series incorporates Tri Core technology,
which includes both DSP and microprocessor
applications. This fail-safe engineering ensures that
any malfunction of a power supply or even a
microprocessor should not threaten the load. All
crucial components, modules and systems are
constantly monitored allowing for predictive
maintenance. Should any anomalies occur this
information could be gathered via a PC or through
the Internet. Reader Reply No: 115043
Scorpion power systems
launch unique CHP system
With the flexibility to support both inside and outside
applications, powertherm’s CHP technology recovers
waste heat to provide heating, hot water or even air
conditioning. This reduces overall energy
consumption and thereby enables commercial and
industrial customers to offset gas and electricity
consumption. The system’s very low exhaust
emissions ensure that powertherm meets total
compliance with existing and future UK regulations.
Powertherm is supplied with a unique maintenance
package that includes Scorpion Power System’s
Hawk Eye remote monitoring system, which
provides an immediate reaction to faults or any
decline in efficiency. Customers benefit from
Britain’s only guaranteed fixed cost maintenance
plan that ensures all components are fully
maintained. This ensures the efficiency of the CHP
system is at peak level throughout its entire life and
is a mandatory requirement for most forms of
government funding such as the Carbon Trust Loan
Fund. Reader Reply No: 115044

Premier-e!
COBA Europe has launched an
informative DVD featuring an allstar
line up of its Premier range of
entrance matting systems.
The ‘matting A listers’ that take to the floor for this
production include some of COBA’S top
performers - Premier Plus Tiles, Premier Track
Tiles and Premier Grip Tiles.
Lasting 5 minutes and 30 seconds, this DVD has
been professionally produced as an all-round
guide to COBA’s Premier Entrance Matting
covering everything from features and benefits, to
installation, maintenance and technical guidance.
“It has been several years since we first
introduced Premier matting to our product range,”
explains COBA’s Sales Manager, Chris Stanley.
“Such has the popularity been for our Premier
matting which is widely used in retail, offices and
other busy entrance areas, that we felt the range
justified its own dedicated marketing tool. A DVD
seemed the ideal medium for illustrating the many
benefits associated with the Premier collection.”
Bbi completes fit out for disaster
recovery company in eight weeks
The new 79,440 sq ft building,
named Elstree Tower, is a sixstorey
landmark building
visible from the A1 and close
to the famous film studios in
Elstree, Hertfordshire.
According to official statistics,
58 per cent of organisations in
the UK were affected by the
September 11 attacks in the
US, while one in eight
businesses claimed to be
“severely affected” by the
incident.
How a business recovers
from a major hit is a great
yardstick of its strength. Most
companies hit by major
disasters shut down within 18
months of the incident occurring, while 90% of
companies that lose data shut within two years.
SunGard said the new workplace recovery centre
would provide back up for up to 1,500 workstations,
as well as crisis management suites, conference
RIDI Lighting is set to shake up the
commercial lighting world with the
launch of its comprehensive lighting
control package, Control3. Designed to
offer maximum energy and cost
efficiency, the new RIDI system easily
ensures total compliance with Part L
building regulations, as well as absolute
end-user convenience.
A software based control system, using standard
TCP/IP, as well as DALI, Control3 gives you
single interface. Simple both to use and install,
Control3 allows individual building users to manage
their own environment
via a PC pop-up or
wireless control, as
well as the system
making use of the
existing data network
and manual control
switches.
Incorporating daylight
detection, absence
recognition and
scheduled switching,
Control3 eliminates
unnecessary energy
use but also brings
significant aesthetic
benefits. Connected to
RIDI’s Dynamic
Daylight luminaires,
Control3 is able to
reflect external
conditions – to mimic
natural daylight or
even create the
appearance of a bright
summer’s day when, in
reality, the natural light
is dull and grey.
Instantly adjustable,
Control3 is designed to
interiors
suites, meeting rooms and communal areas.
The new centre is equipped with computers,
phones, dealer-desks, printers and photocopiers to
refurbishment earlier this year.
Simon Oldroyd, group sales and marketing director
of Bbi, was responsible for ensuring that Elstree
Tower was completed on time, within budget and to
the exact specifications of SunGard.
Established in 1989, Welsh headquartered Bbi
operates from three locations – Brecon, Leeds and
Gloucester – working for some of the UK’s leading
organisations including Zurich Financial Services
and the Lloyds TSB Group.
Complete control with RIDI
increase worker comfort, reduce fatigue and,
therefore, increase productivity.
Control3 has been in development for the last two
years and comes to market following a considerable
testing period which particularly focused on
providing the maximum in effective levels of control
for the individual.
Crucially, what the introduction of a comprehensive
control system means for RIDI, is that it allows the
manufacturer to offer the complete tailored lighting
and control package, with the control software
complementing its architectural range of surface
mounted, suspended and recessed luminaires.
When it comes to fast
delivery, Komfort’s new
Velocity lives up to its name.
Aesthetically pleasing and
easily reconfigured the Velocity
range can be delivered in just
two weeks.
Offering streamlined elegance coupled
with precision engineering, Velocity desks
have numerable technical features that
ensure the range has total adaptability
thereby allowing businesses to create
and recreate multiple workstation
arrangements. Beams can be reduced in
size to accommodate smaller work
surfaces and the inclusion of non-handed
legs guarantees that desks can be
interchangeable.
The addition of cpu holder and cable
access in beam and legs underlines that
the Velocity range is specifically geared
up for the modern environment. The
adjustable crank height option meets
DDA regulations enabling Velocity desks
to be adjusted for wheelchair users.
Together these technical innovations
equate to a high degree of flexibility to
cope with ongoing and frequent changes.
Desks are available in a wide range of
options and permutations to cater for the
most demanding requirements ranging
from curvaceous to angular shapes. For
example, Velocity’s distinctive wave
desks blend appealing aesthetics, quality
possible and demonstrate best practice,
serving as a benchmark for our hotels and
other offices. Our work at Denham will
now influence future IHG fit outs and ideas
from this project are already being
introduced in our Singapore development.
Crucially, IHG and Morgan Lovell worked
together as one team, to deliver the project
on time and on budget.
It is an amazing result, a brilliant finish and
our employees are very pleased with it.
Visitors are also really impressed.”
Morgan Lovell’s southern team, based in
the Thames Valley at Wokingham,
managed the project. IHG has been able to
tap into Morgan Lovell’s green office
expertise for the carbon neutral fit out,
which included a full eco-specification for products -
based on limiting the travelling distances of
materials sourced - and selecting those with a high
recycled and recyclable content.
In particular, IHG was keen to illustrate the benefits
of solar power – and panels are in place contributing
to the running of the landscape and car park lighting.
Solar blinds have also been introduced, controlled
by a ‘weather station’ on the roof.
David Cannon, Morgan Lovell’s southern regional
managing director, said: “This was an exciting
project for us to be involved in. The end result is
stunning.”
health & safety: fire safety
Fire facts for FMs
Aone-stop advice centre has been
launched to give facilities managers
the complete picture of their legal
responsibilities in fire protection.
National contractor J & S Seddon Painting has
joined forces with Crown Paints – manufacturers of
Timonox Flame Retardant Coatings - to produce a
fact-filled DVD and CD Rom dual set to give
property professionals the inside track on the
subject, in a format designed to fit in with today’s
increasingly paperless office.
The DVD outlines details of the Regulatory Reform
(Fire Safety) Order 2005 and explains the
responsibility this has placed on facilities managers
in buildings. For facilities managers in Scotland, the
requirements of the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 are
covered.
This film is supported by a CD-Rom, which pulls
together a wealth of information on the subject from
Advanced protection
for world’s largest
blood processing
centre
Intelligent fire alarm control panels
from Advanced Electronics are at
the heart of a new fire detection
system for the world’s largest blood
processing centre. The new purpose
built £60m facility for the National
Blood Service, located at Filton,
Bristol was opened in July 2008 and
will process 600,000 units of blood
per year.
The centre will offer a service to 14 million people
and provide blood to 90 hospitals.
Three Advanced Mx-4400 fire panels and three
mimic panels were installed by Bristol-based MAT
Fire Systems Ltd, together with close to 900
Hochiki devices, including 615 smoke detectors.
MAT Fire Systems also installed 10 air sampling
units, 4 extinguishant systems and a complete
voice evacuation system. The three 4-loop Mx-
4400 panels were installed in different locations
throughout the centre and networked together to
provide a single integrated solution. This allows
any fire and fault condition, at any location, to be
instantly alerted on all the fire and mimic panels.
The Advanced mimic panels consist of a graphical
map overlaid with LEDs to indicate fire zones.
This provides the user with an unambiguous
display of any fire and fault condition in the
building. The mimic display can be either
integrated into the front door of any Mx-4000
panel or mounted in a separate enclosure.
Vimpex Fire-Cryer® Voice Sounders
have been used for many years at
London Underground stations where
their switchable four messages have
ensured that travellers and staff alike
are kept informed of any alarm
situation. A special coded message is
used to ensure that customers are not
unduly alarmed during systems alert.
Now the London Transport Museum has emulated
the Underground by installing Fire-Cryer® Voice
Sounders at the Covent Garden location. A mixture
of wall-mounted standard Fire-Cryers® and large
bracket-mounted Maxi Fire-Cryers® have been
installed to ensure clarity of speech during
evacuation. In the event of an incident, confusion is
eliminated as the Fire-Cryer’s® clear and
unambiguous broadcasts can be both heard and
understood by staff and the public.
There are now dozens of sites in London utilising
Fire-Cryer® Voice Sounders. They are particularly
popular for use in public licensed premises where it
has been proven the provision of voice is much
more effective at evacuating the public than sound
wireless fire door hold-open devices have been fitted
to enhance access in busy areas and to prevent the
dangerous and illegal practice of wedging open fire
doors.
Notts PCT’s Fire Safety Advisor, Brian Fairholme
comments: ‘The simple principle of Dorgard offered
the best solution because no hard wiring is required,
and fitting is quick and easy. The bottom line is that
the wedged door hazard has been eliminated in
vulnerable locations because the threat of the
wooden door-wedge, which breaches our Health &
Safety guidelines, has been removed.’
Dorgard is the wireless solution that offers the
simplest, most cost-effective way of legally holding
open fire doors safely in any position, automatically
releasing them should the fire alarm sound.
There are more than 250,000 Dorgards installed
across the UK. The Dorgard range is the solution to
the illegally wedged open fire door problem, in any
environment that complies fully with all relevant
British Standards and EU Directives.
Voice sounders keep museum safe
alone. The Fire-Cryer® range is the most extensive
range of voice sounders available on the market
today with five models to choose from and literally
millions of message combinations, any site
requirement can be fulfilled. The units require no
special wiring and can be retrofitted to existing
installations. They can be fully synchronised and
have a low current consumption allowing simple
replacement of existing sounders and bells. The
Fire-Cryer’s® multi-message capability also ensures
that ‘system test’ and ‘all clear’ messages can be
easily transmitted voiding confusion with the
fire/evacuation alarm. Reader Reply No: 115028

WAGNER smoke detection
makes prison block safer
WAGNER UK’s TITANUS
MICRO·SENS®
addressable Air Sampling
Detection (ASD) systems are
providing early warning
smoke detection for a new
prison block at HMP
Lowdham Grange.
The TITANUS ASD systems have
been successfully tested and
evaluated by the Home Office for use
in prison accommodation.
Air sampling is an established form of
fire detection for prison cells as it
eliminates the need for a point smoke
detector that can easily be damaged –
ASD only requires a discrete sampling
point. However, WAGNER UK’s
TITANUS® MICRO·SENS®
addressable ASD units have a unique
provide protection against
unauthorised operation with
removable keys. They control two
independent circuits; in the two
position versions one circuit is open
while the other is closed, turning the
key reverses these positions. In the
three position version both circuits are
normally open, either one is closed
depending on which way the key is
turned. As a further refinement, the
key can be removed in either one only
or both positions for the two position
keyswitch, in the three position version
the key is removable in all three
positions.
The push button units are double pole
and available as either momentary
action, with the circuit completed only
while the button is pushed, or as
latching units that toggle between the
open and closed state on successive
operations. The two or three-position
rocker switch units are available as
two position double pole on/off
switches, or three position double pole
on/off/on devices with all switches
rated at 230VAC. RR No: 115025
advantage in that a single unit can
monitor multiple cells and identify the
specific location in the event of a fire.
This provides a significant cost saving
compared to traditional ASD systems
which require a detection unit for each
cell. In total 35 MICRO·SENS® units
were installed, one for approximately
every 4 cells, with the sampling point
being terminated in WAGNER’s
discrete capillary system fitted with a
tamper-proof plate.
ASD systems draw air samples
continuously from the monitored area
through a pipe system fitted with
sampling holes at regular intervals.
The airflow is then analysed for smoke
particles and an alarm is raised if
smoke is present. The system is
active, continually drawing air samples
from the risk areas. PRO·SENS® and
MICRO·SENS®, like the other ASD
units in the TITANUS® range,
incorporate PIPE·GUARD and
LOGIC·SENS. PIPE-GUARD is a
unique monitoring system that detects
if a sampling hole is blocked, a pipe is
ruptured or if the air sampling unit has
failed. This feature is vital in
inaccessible areas where access is
restricted. LOGIC·SENS is an
advanced signal processing
technology that analyses the smoke
sample and provides the earliest
possible smoke detection whilst safely
eliminating false alarms. RR: 115027
Other features of the Discovery range designed to
help eliminate nuisance alarms include automatic
drift compensation, a feature that adjusts for
environmental conditions such as dust to ensure the
detector is not adversely affected, and sophisticated
self-monitoring that rejects transient alarms.
The Discovery Multisensor itself uses algorithms to
process the signals from its smoke and heat sensors
to produce one output on which the decision ‘fire/no
fire’ is based. Multisensors can be selected to
operate as a smoke detector only, a heat detector
‘in combination’ selection is made, the signals from
each sensor are considered in relation to each other.
FIA welcomes publication of
new False Fire Alarms Policy
Nittan (UK) Ltd., a UK manufacturer of
conventional and addressable fire
detection products, has added a new
detector to its world famous Sensortec
range of fire detection products.
The Sensortec ST-PY-AS AS protocol analogue
detector features a new optical chamber design and
orange LED to provide improved responses to black
smoke, which many optical detectors find difficult to
detect. Using this new design, the ST-PY-AS
detector delivers a flat response over different types
of fire, making it ideal for an even wider range of
applications than ever before, including those where
ionisation detectors were previously only thought
suitable.
In addition to a new chamber design, the ST-PY-AS
detector has been designed with an internal microcontroller
to give the detector intelligence at the
head.
Other features include soft addressing, negating the
need for a DIL switch, and built-in drift compensation
national approach to reducing false alarms and
unwanted fire signals is developed”. It was officially
launched at the Fire & Rescue 2008 Exhibition &
Conference held in Liverpool alongside the World
Firefighters’ Games from 27-29 August.
Importantly the Policy clarifies the difference
between false alarms and unwanted fire signals, the
latter term applying to a false alarm from an
automatic fire detection and fire alarm system once
it has been passed through to the Fire & Rescue
Service.
One of the main objectives of the Policy, which
applies to all premises covered by the Fire Safety
Order and not just those linked to Alarm Receiving
Centres (ARCs), is to provide the brigades with
different levels of response, all of which are defined
within the document, thereby offering specific
procedures to follow when faced with varying
degrees of unwanted fire signals.
It also includes protocols for Telecare premises and
ARCs, as well as defining and providing options for
call filtering. Reader Reply No: 115039
Nittan launches new
Sensortec optical detector
to help prevent false alarms from dirty detectors.
This latter feature is particularly useful in large
installations as the panels do not require validation
of compensation which is time consuming.
In addition to the ST-PY-AS, Nittan has also
launched the MTK diagnostic tool, which is an AS
protocol loop test tool as well as an address
programmer for the new ST-PY-AS detector.
Jaguar Land Rover invests
in OxyReduct ® for complete
fire protection
Jaguar Land Rover has
invested in WAGNER UK’s
OxyReduct® system to
provide the ultimate form of
fire protection for their IT
suites.
The IT facilities are fundamental to
Jaguar Land Rover’s operation and
therefore any downtime due to fire or
false alarm incidents would have
significant consequences for their
business. No matter how good a fire
detection, extinguishing or
suppression system is, a fire has to
start for it to work - causing inevitable
damage and disruption. OxyReduct®
creates a fire-free environment
thereby eliminating any downtime due
to fire-related incidents.
OxyReduct® creates an environment
where fires cannot start. This is
achieved by continuously reducing the
oxygen level in a closed area through
adding nitrogen to the air. The oxygen
is reduced to a level where most
combustibles do not inflame and an
open fire is impossible. Importantly,
people can enter and work in the area
of risk at any time. WAGNER UK’s
TITANUS® TOP·SENS® air sampling
smoke detection system has also
been chosen to provide a secondary
backup fire protection for the facility in
the case of pyrolysis.
OxyReduct® was chosen by Jaguar
Land Rover and Daemon Fire, their
specialist fire contractor, for the fire
protection upgrade as it provided a
higher level of protection than
traditional solutions and could be
installed without requiring any
additional building work.
Addressable fire system 4
- 20mA single input module
System Sensor Europe’s
new 4 - 20mA input
module enables devices that
communicate through the
industry standard 4 - 20mA
output to interface with an
addressable fire system.
Current loop devices are typically
used to transmit the analogue
measurements of gas concentrations,
pressure, temperature, gas or liquid
flow rates and many similar physical
variables. The benefits for the fire
engineer are that a number of new
variables can now contribute to the
panel’s decision-making process. An
excellent example is gas
concentration levels, an increasingly
important part of the overall life safety
portfolio.
Using the 4 - 20mA module, a build-up
of potentially dangerous gases can be
tracked by the fire system and fire
vents opened and evacuation
procedures implemented if the
concentration levels become
dangerously high. Similarly, a
potential ignition source such as a hot
running bearing can also be
monitored, enabling the fire panel to
initiate a shutdown if required.
The main advantage of current loop
technology is that the accuracy of the
signal is not affected by voltage drop
in the interconnecting wiring. The livezero
represented by the 4 mA lower
limit allows the module to detect faults
in the transmitter; in normal operation,
the System Sensor module translates
the current levels generated by the
transmitter into user-configurable
thresholds that are recognised by the
loop communications protocol of the
fire control panel.
The 4 - 20mA module conforms to the
standard System Sensor module
mechanical format and is fitted with a
bi-colour LED for local status
indication.
The BioSach contains safe microorganisms,
which have been specially selected to react when
in contact with waste to break down odour
detects the organics present then produces an
enzyme that degrades them. As the biological
process is irreversible, the odours are safely
controlled in-between services.
A pleasant citrus fragrance is also released,
creating a fresh and clean ambience in the
washroom cubicle.
Initial Washroom Solutions has an ongoing
Pland Stainless, the UK’s leading
manufacturer of stainless steel
washrooms and sanitaryware, recently
supplied its products to the new
‘Matter’ nightclub at The O2, Greenwich
peninsula, South-East London.
WCs, cisterns, urinals and a variety of standard and
bespoke wash troughs, all manufactured from
stainless steel, were a crucial part of making ‘Matter’
a world class live music and club night venue. Pland
Stainless literally had to pull out all the stops to help
complete the project on schedule, which meant
supplying bespoke wash troughs on a three week
leadtime.
Pland Stainless was specified by world renowned
Pentagram design house because its products
helped created a modern contemporary look as well
as being hardwearing and resistant to vandalism.
The work on site has been carried out by Collins
Construction Plc, which was the main contractor.
‘Matter’ opened in September 2008.
The high number of people expected to visit Matter
meant that Pland Stainless was required to supply
special wash troughs. Again manufactured in
stainless steel, these bespoke designs were
by letting people test the efficiency
of the machines by drying their
hands on the stand. They also used
a system to calculate how much
customers can save in comparison
to the rates they pay now, by
switching over to Cannon for their
washroom supplies.
Pat Gillingham, Sales Director for
Cannon Hygiene said, “Our stand at
the exhibition proved to be really
popular and we had a great
response to our interactive
demonstrations. In this time of
energy awareness, cost reduction
and reducing carbon footprint then
anything that Cannon can do to improve efficiencies
and hygiene cleanliness in the washroom is being
seen as a big help to our customers.
Pland stainless washrooms
really matter at the O2
required because the washrooms have WC cubicles
that run along both sides – to cope with the high
volumes of people. This created a need for the
bespoke double sided wash troughs, with four
separate bowls and taps located at each end,
enabling access from users at both sides. The fact
that Pland was able to supply these bespoke items
on a three week leadtime is testament to its
manufacturing capability and customer service
responsiveness. Matter now has a total of 86 WC
cubicles including VIP washroom facilities, all of
which were supplied by Pland Stainless.
Health & Safety: Washrooms
A Christmas
party washroom
Keeping the washroom clean and well stocked during the
Christmas rush at a pub, club, restaurant or hotel presents some
specific challenges for hygiene providers. SCA Tissue Europe’s
Jenny Turner looks at issues such as high traffic, hygiene and
coping with guests who may be worse for wear and finds out how
washroom managers cope in such difficult circumstances.
Pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurants
obviously look forward to the
seasonal boost that Christmas brings to
their businesses.
As for customers, their expectations are particularly
high when they visit any of these venues in the hope
of a memorable festive experience.
But extra custom – especially when it involves
people who may be drinking more than they
normally would – means extra traffic through the
washroom. And if a badly-equipped or messy
washroom detracts from other customers’
enjoyment, they may steer clean of that venue in
future. So how do washroom managers cope with
the Christmas rush in entertainment venues
One of the main problems will be the issue of toilet
tissue and hand towel supplies running out as the
crowds flock in. This is the season when easy-totop-up,
high capacity dispensers come into their
own.
The Tork range includes interfold and zigzag-fold
hand towels in dispensers that can be topped up at
any time, and Tork folded toilet paper which is
dispensed a single sheet at a time and again is easy
to top up.
In a particularly busy washroom, jumbo-sized toilet
rolls are often the answer as these contain the
equivalent of around 20 conventional loo rolls.
However, this type of system can be uneconomical
in a washroom that is only serviced once a day. If
during this daily check the janitor finds that most –
but not all – of the jumbo roll has been used up, he
or she is likely to change the roll and discard the
remainder to avoid the problem of loo paper running
out before the next check.
Here the Tork Mini Jumbo Twin is a good solution.
This features two mini jumbo toilet rolls side by side
and when the first roll is used up, the second
automatically drops into place. The janitor or
washroom manager can then replenish the spare roll
whenever it is convenient to do so.
If the extra Christmas traffic is likely to lead to messy
washroom units, it is probably time to replace those
C-fold towel dispensers. These tend to give out
towels in clumps and users are inclined to leave the
excess towels on the units where they quickly
become soiled and soggy. Alternatives such as Tork
hand towel rolls and Tork zigzag-fold towels are both
housed in durable dispensers that give out only one
towel at a time while also being tough enough to
cope with demanding environments.
Leaky soap dispensers will also increase the
problem of mess on the units. Here a switch to nondrip
soap dispensers will help.
Where heavy drinking may occur, washroom
managers need to deal with issues such as
vandalism and pilferage while also trying to keep the
loos clean and well-stocked.
Conventional toilet rolls should not be provided in
environments where vandalism is an issue, since
these may be thrown around or stolen. Dispensers
must be lockable and easy to replenish during
periods of heavy usage.
The Tork range includes tough wipe-clean ABS
plastic dispensers that are key lockable to minimise
vandalism and pilferage. These can be used for
dispensing high-capacity Tork Jumbo toilet rolls and
Tork hand towel rolls. There is also a Tork Advanced
flushable hand towel which will not block the loo if
inadvertently flushed away instead of binned after
use.
Another challenge facing washroom managers over
Christmas is the need to maintain hygiene standards
during this busy period. No-one wants to be ill over
the festive season, and everyone will remember
where they picked up that bug that ruined their
holiday.
Unhygienic washroom facilities can be lethal: diners
with inadequately washed hands may return to the
table or bar where they will immediately greet a new
arrival with a handshake, or help themselves to a
bread roll or a handful of peanuts. These actions will
ensure that bacteria is spread to others.
Research carried out by TÜV Produkt and Umwelt
GmbH in Germany has revealed that hot air dryers
can increase the bacteria on the hands by 117 per
cent even after washing with soap and water. Drying
the hands with a disposable towel can cut the
amount of bacteria on the hands by around 24 per
cent, while using a textile towel reduces the bacteria
count by only four per cent.
Hygienic, no-touch dispensers will minimise the risk
of cross-contamination. Tork Premium and Tork
Advanced hand towel rolls are available in a
hygienic, semi-automatic dispenser that prevents
both cross-contamination and over-use. Tork
Premium and Tork Advanced interfold hand towels
are dispensed in individual sheets and come in a
dispenser with a hygiene shield for extra protection
against cross-contamination.
New to the Tork range are automatic, hands-free
dispensers for Tork hand towel rolls and Tork
Premium foam soap. These form part of the new
Tork Aluminium range, which is designed to create
an upmarket image. The fact that Tork Aluminium
dispensers are resistant to fingermarks, too, means
they remain clean and attractive even in high traffic
washrooms.
Providing a well-stocked, hygienic washroom is
challenging enough all through the year– but even
more so during the busy festive season. By careful
selection of hand towels, soaps, toilet tissue and
dispensing systems, washroom providers can
provide the right solution for their particular
environment this Christmas.
AquaCare rises to
the Western Challenge
Risk assessment programme covers over 7,500 homes
Western Challenge Housing
Association has contracted
AquaCare Water Hygiene Services to
provide Legionella risk assessments.
The programme commenced on
September 1st and will cover Western
Challenge Housing Association’s entire
residential property portfolio - including
HMOs and tower blocks.
As an independent landlord providing over 7,500
homes for rent and shared ownership across the
South of England, some1,400 of which are for
people who need care or support to live
independently, Western Challenge Housing
Association has a significant duty of care to its
residents. With many properties having shared water
supplies and services, water hygiene is a key
element in this responsibility. Following a highly
competitive evaluation process, Western Challenge
Housing Association selected AquaCare to provide
the water hygiene risk assessments programme for
all its residential properties.
“All the companies we approached responded
professionally but it was the comprehensive quality,
style and structure of the AquaCare reporting that
swung the balance” comments Jon Tremlett,
Western Challenge Housing Association’s asset
manager.
Trained AquaCare Consultants undertake a full site
inspection to identify all water systems covered by
ACoP L8 requirements - stored water, drinking
water, closed systems, etc – and then conduct a
thorough risk assessment. Following each risk
assessment, AquaCare produces a comprehensive
report, including detailed schematic system drawings
and identifying any remedial action necessary to
meet current standards. Important to Western
Challenge was the way AquaCare’s reporting is both
site specific and standardised, making it ideal for
multi-site management.
From initial risk assessment through to cleaning and
ongoing treatment, AquaCare provides a total water
quality service to help a wide variety of
organisations,
including housing
associations like
Western Challenge,
comply with Health
and Safety
Legionella
legislation,
particularly
Approved Code of
Sprint V Flue Gas Analyser wins
CORGI Gas Safety Product Of
The Year
Telegan’s Sprint V multi-purpose flue gas analyser was
named ‘Gas Safety Product of the Year’ at this year’s
prestigious CORGI Awards ceremony, held at the RICOH
Arena in Coventry recently.
Telegan’s exclusive industry partner, Anton, was also recognised for the part it
played in bringing the innovative product to market.
Dubbed the ‘Oscars of the Gas Industry’, the CORGI Awards are an annual
event recognising those people, products and companies committed to gas
safety and improving standards in the industry. The glittering ceremony was
hosted by comedian Michael McIntyre, a regular on TV shows ‘Mock the Week’
and ‘Have I Got News for You’.
The Sprint V is Bluetooth-enabled and features a flue gas analyser, a
differential thermometer, a differential manometer, a carbon monoxide room
safety monitor and a gas escape detector with gooseneck probe and ultra-bright
LED searchlight as standard – all in one small handheld unit. An important
feature of the Sprint V is ‘Smart
Purge’ technology, which saves
battery, pump and filter life, enables
intelligent purging for switch-on and
switch-off, and allows the purging of
gas while other tests are being
carried out.
Commenting on the Awards the
judges said, “When selecting all the
winners we were so impressed by
such outstanding examples of best
practice and hope to see all these
approaches rolled out to wider
audiences for the good of the industry
as a whole.” RR No: 115046
Broadwood’s Snowflex
gritter keeps car parks
free of snow and ice
Broadwood International’s
highly acclaimed SnowEx
SP-575 salt and sand
spreader is proving
indispensable to cleaning
and facilities management
company, Cresswell, in
keeping Woking Borough
Council’s car parks free of
snow and ice.
Purchased by Cresswell last year after
winning a five-year contract from the
Council to service all it’s car parks in
the borough of Woking, the SnowEx
SP-575 spreader, which is mounted
on a trailer chassis, proved invaluable
last winter in de-icing the Council’s 11
surface and 5 multi-storey car parks.
When required, the SnowEx spreader
is simply coupled on to one of
Cresswell’s Renault Trafic vans and is
immediately ready for use. When
gritting has been completed, the
SnowEx spreader is removed, and the
vehicle returns to its normal duties.
With its unique low-maintenance
direct-drive system that requires no
belts, pulleys or chains, the SnowEx
SP-575 spreader is simple but
effective. Its dual 12-volt DC motor
combines maximum torque
transmission with reliability, and as
with the full SnowEx range of
spreaders, the SP-575 can be
attached to any vehicle with a 12-volt
supply. With its polypropylene noncorrosive
hopper, the SnowEx is a far
lighter weight than comparable steelhopper
spreaders. This means that
the SnowEx is easily installed and
removed, freeing the vehicle to
perform multiple applications.
SnowEx spreaders enable councils
and sub-contractors to provide the
public with ice-free walkways and car
parks for minimal outlay. A feature
that also appeals to Health & Safety
Managers is that the in-cabin
controller enables safe, on-the-move
adjustment of spreading width and
application rates to suit operation
conditions. Reader Reply No: 115018
launched
The new VersiRail system is set to
transform how we view roof-top
guardrails, with a range of
architectural designs elegantly
engineered in aluminium. Launched
by Latchways plc, the global leader in
regulations without compromising on
appearance.
VersiRail provides a free-standing or fixed
‘collective’ solution to protecting workers on flat
roofs and other areas where access is needed. It
is lightweight and easy to install, and the quality of
its engineering belies its competitive price. The
corrosion-proof aluminium system satisfies
architectural design requirements as well as
safety demands, with straight, curved or inclined
styles in either free standing or fixed forms. A
folding upright version is also available, which is
concealed from below when not in use. All types
are available in untreated or polished aluminium,
or powder coated to specified RAL colours.
VersiRail can form an integral part of a new
project design or it can be quickly and easily
installed to existing buildings, and adapted to
meet changing needs. The addition of VersiRail to
its portfolio enables Latchways to satisfy the
complete hierarchy of high-level working
provisions demanded by law. VersiRail
complements Latchways’ cable-based fall restraint
or fall arrest systems which use the innovative
Constant Force® post as an anchorage.
The cold winter weather is now
on its way. Hail stones and snow
has been forecasted, so you may
think that air conditioning may be
the last thing on Facility Managers
mind. Yet, air conditioning and
ventilation is still vital during the
busy Christmas season. Office
parties, concentrated areas and a
steady flow of visitors’ means that
climate control can be difficult this
time of year.
DX Cooling, the low carbon air conditioning
specialists give some suggestions on how not
to get hot under the collar and save money
and energy this winter.
Most air conditioning units now have a
reversible heat pump. This means that systems
provide both cold and warm air. Government
incentives and energy savings make this the best
solution for temperature control all year round.
Maintaining regularly both chillers and air
conditioning units will reduce the risk of your system
breaking down during busy periods. Plus it will
increase the energy efficiency.
Timers –it’s so easy to forget to turn off the air
conditioning. You can normally set a timer on cooling
systems and is likely to save you money.
As well as air conditioning try and remember natural
ventilation. Natural ventilation is much cheaper than
Winter Wonderment
for Facility Managers
running air conditioning full time, particularly in
confined areas.
Inverter driven A/C systems use less energy and
provide a much better environment for customers.
Minimum temperatures – cooling systems shouldn’t
be set lower than 20C and not run at any lower than
22C if running full time. If your area still isn’t cold
enough then you may require more units for the
allocated space. Or if air flow is not enough then
increase the fan speed instead of lowering the
temperature. Decreasing temperature uses more
energy, produces condensate and thermal shock to
the customers.
h.v.a.c.
New Year’s resolutions and regulations that
Building and Facility Managers need to be
aware of.
Did you know that older air conditioning units
containing R22 gas will be banned as from
2009 and that A/C systems inspection will be
mandatory
F Gas Legislation and maintaining your system
– If you have a unit that has over 2.5kg of
refrigerant, new legislation means that your
system will now legally require a yearly
maintenance service. It is recommended to
have your system maintained at least twice
yearly and more regularly for units that are
used more frequently.
Next year all A/C systems over 250kw (and
12kw by 2011) will need to be inspected and
given an energy performance certificate by a
competent person and approved.
There are government incentives for businesses that
purchase low carbon products, you could claim up to
100% back through the ECA scheme. Look out for
the energy level rating when purchasing cooling or
heating equipment (anything lower than a B is
classed as not economically viable long term.)
You can download our free F Gas fact sheet from
our website. Just log onto www.dxcooling.net. Visit
Searle cascades M&S to greener
refrigeration solutions
Efficient and environment friendly
technology enables ground breaking
100kW condensing units from Searle
Manufacturing Company to deliver a
potentially greener cooling solution for
Marks & Spencer food halls.
The new cascade units – which use either HFC or
HC with carbon dioxide as refrigerants – are among
the most powerful for any commercial supermarket
application in the UK. They are being rolled out to
M&S sites this year as part of a trial to establish the
group’s future policy on refrigeration and choice of
refrigerants.
The Searle CCU-100-ECI-CO2HC Cascade units,
Panasonic inverter
systems improve
financial climate
The first hot day after replacing a
life-expired air conditioning system
at its Chester headquarters was
significant for The Funding
Corporation: there were no
complaints from staff.
Energy efficient inverter controlled Panasonic
systems, installed on the recommendation of the
building’s air conditioning specialists, ensured
superior comfort levels – and potential savings on
future cooling and heating costs – in the two
storey office building. Panasonic inverter systems
are designed to save money because they use
less energy to produce better cooling and heating
outputs than earlier systems.
Using Panasonic equipment supplied by PHM
Distribution of Newcastle-under-Lyme,
subcontractor REF Air Conditioning replaced the
old three pipe main system with a new two pipe
14hp VRF system with 40kW cooling capacity,
driving five 9kW four-way cassettes. In the private
offices and meeting rooms, REF installed four
5kW inverter single split systems – each with wall
mounted indoor units – from Panasonic’s RAC
range, two 6kW systems, one 7kW system and
one twin split system driving two 5kW cassettes,
all from Panasonic’s FS range.
Inverter controls in Panasonic systems allow
maximum output at start-up to bring the building
to the desired temperature as quickly as possible.
Once this temperature is reached, the system
operates economically at the minimum
output needed to
maintain it.
extracted by the Cascade process may be
Nick Smith, Searle Senior Development Engineer,
says the Cascade systems were developed to keep
capital and operating costs within the range of
comparable ‘standard’ systems – but with a reduced
environmental risk because CO2 occurs naturally.
With a similar power requirement to a Searle
standard CCU R404A system of equal capacity, a
CO2 Cascade unit would have minimal impact on
the environment should a release of refrigerant
JS Air Curtains has designed,
supplied and installed four brushed
stainless steel air curtains at the offices
of Associated Newspapers in
Kensington. The 2.5m air curtains were
joined to create a pair of 5m wide air
curtain systems that keep cold air out
during the winter and air conditioned air
in during the summer.
The air curtain systems were mounted above the
doorways at the front and rear of the building. They
both have the same attractive cylindrical design and
are suspended from the ceiling with matching arm
supports. The units stop air from entering through
the revolving doors of the building, which can act as
slow moving fans, bringing in cold air with every
rotation.
Each pair of stainless steel air curtains provides an
airflow of up to 13,000m3/h and are electrically
heated with a total heat output of 64kW/h,
maintaining a pleasant internal atmosphere.
JS also supplied and installed a more standard 1.5m
Windbox air curtain above a single external doorway
at the Derry Street entrance. It has an output of
3,700m 3 /h with up to 22.5kW of heating.
The Cascade systems incorporate special
components such as the CO2 to propane heat
exchanger and pump station, a special propane
compressor pack with inverter drive, and energy
efficient EC fan condensers.
JS Air Curtains at
Associated Newspapers
Irish Mail on Sunday and the advertising publication
Loot.
The type of bespoke cylindrical air curtain installed
at Associated Newspapers has many different
mounting options to tie-in with an entrance’s
architecture. It can be stood vertically at either side
of a door, hung with cables above the door or
suspended with supporting arms attached to a
ceiling, wall or floor. When mounting horizontally it
will provide an effective seal for doorways up to
3.5m high and when positioned vertically at either
side of a door, it will protect entrances up to 7m wide
from air ingress.
These cylindrical units are available in lengths of im,
1.5m, 2m and 2,5m, and can be joined end-to-end to
accommodate very wide entrances to buildings,
such as the entrances to Associated Newspapers.
Up to 10 units can be operated from the same
controller, connected to the air curtain with 20m of
plug and play RJ45 lead for easy installation. It can
also be controlled via a BMS system.
JS Air Curtains supplies an extensive range of air
curtains, as well as bespoke solutions, for all
commercial and industrial applications. JS’ in-house
project management division also provides a
JS Humidifiers is launching a new
wall-mounted spray humidifier ideal
for small industrial or agricultural areas.
The Mistifier Plus can introduce up to
6.5 litres of water every hour using
low energy spinning disk
atomising technology.
The Mistifier Plus incorporates
many features that make it
the most hygienic
humidifier of its type. A
purge function and
siphon drain forces
fresh water through the
system when the
power is connected or
disconnected and an
auto-drain feature
flushes the system
every four hours
during nonoperation.
This
ensures that water
cannot stagnate in
the system
preventing the
possibility of bacteria
building up. During operation the small water tank
holds just 0.055 litres of water, which is atomised
and sprayed into the air in just 30 seconds, meaning
the humidifier is practically operating with running
water.
The unit has an anti-scale cartridge on the incoming
h.v.a.c.
Misitifer plus humidifier
water supply which reduces necessary cleaning and
maintenance. This cartridge also provides silver ion
dosing to the water, which is effective against more
than 650 types of microbe and has a
residual effect throughout the system.
This new humidifier is easy to wall
mount with the stainless steel brackets
supplied. It is a compact unit measuring
just 61cm high, capable of spraying
between 1.1 and 6.5 litres of atomised
water per hour with a maximum energy
consumption of just 230W. The
directional outlets on the top of the unit
allow the fine mist to be directed through
360g. As the water rapidly evaporates into
the air, as well as humidifying, it also
has a cooling effect on an atmosphere.
The Mistifier Plus is ideal for maintaining
the humidity in small industrial
situations, including printers, textile
manufacturers, storerooms, agricultural
and botanical environments, and
tobacco manufacturers.
JS Humidifiers is the UKs largest
humidification company with the
widest range of products and offers a
service of advice, design, supply, installation
and maintenance. It also offers a comprehensive
range of humidifier spares, not only for JS
equipment but also for a large range of different
manufacturers’ humidifiers, mostly available exstock.
h.v.a.c. cover story
Andrew’s renewable, energy
efficient water heating for
University of Plymouth’s
new Nancy Astor Building
Andrews Water Heaters, part of the
Baxi Commercial Division, has
supplied two Queen’s Award winning
MAXXflo direct fired storage water
heaters, together with a SOLARflo preheat
system which have been installed
at the new Nancy Astor Building, an £11
million development at the University of
Plymouth. This building, named after
the Plymouth Sutton MP who was the
first woman to serve in the House of
Commons, is at the centre of a major
scheme connecting the campus with
the Drake Reservoir and its adjoining
parkland. The Nancy Astor Building is
the new home of the Faculty of Health
and Social Work.
Designers Hoare Lea selected the Andrews
equipment for its use of renewable energy which
complements an already highly efficient water
heating system in order to comply with a number of
important criteria: the University’s policy on carbon
emissions, Part L of the Building Regulations, the
requirement for a ‘very good’ BREAAM rating and,
last but not least, the company’s own policy of
minimising the carbon footprint of its design projects.
A spokesman for Hoare Lea commented, “A real
benefit was that Andrews were able to supply the
whole package, which made the design much more
straightforward than combining water heaters and
solar system from separate manufacturers.”
The Andrews Water Heaters package is designed to
provide abundant, virtually instantaneous, domestic
hot water to the entire building. Outlets in the Nancy
Astor Building comprise 17 showers, 28 wash hand
basins and 10 sinks located within the sports facility,
the academic teaching area, the café area and
including all WC, cleaners and tea point facilities to
the 4 storey office accommodation. The two
MAXXflo CWH120/300 storage water heaters are
located in the Energy Centre on the lower ground
floor, along with a 1500 litre stainless steel pre-heat
unvented cylinder and the other components of the
solar heating package. The 21m2 of SOLARflo
evacuated tubes for solar collection are mounted
horizontally on the flat roof of the North Core plant
room, some 28 metres above the Energy Centre.
The University of Plymouth’s framework building
services contractor and installer of the equipment,
MITIE Engineering commented, “Installation of all
the Andrews equipment went well and the evacuated
tubes were very simple to install. With outlets
located throughout the building, programming
required careful planning and co-ordination and the
support and back up received from Andrews was
30
h.v.a.c. cover story
excellent.”
Water is preheated by the solar collectors, which
have the evacuated tubes rotated to an angle of 20
degrees in order to optimise their efficiency.
The heat is then transferred to the single coil
unvented cylinder which in turn supplies the two
MAXXflo water heaters, thereby considerably
reducing consumption of natural gas. In addition to
the solar collectors and cylinder, the complete
SOLARflo package includes solar controls, pump
station, expansion vessels, first fill of heat transfer
fluid and collector mounting accessories.
The MAXXflo range of gas-fired storage water
heaters consists of nine models and a choice of
four nominal outputs from 30kW to 120kW, all
achieving an operational efficiency of 109%.
Winners of the Queen’s Award for Innovation for
their energy saving capabilities, these units are
ideal for buildings with a high demand for hot water
and particularly suitable for installations such as
sports facilities, where this demand peaks at
particular times of the day. Thanks to their fast
recovery rate and innovative design, carbon
footprint, NOx levels and running costs are kept to
a minimum. The Andrews MAXXflo CWH120/300
models selected for this project have the largest
capacities in the range at 300 litres, and feature
robust stainless steel construction which ensures a
long service life. Each has an output of 30 to
120kW and a recovery rate of 2040 litres through a
temperature rise of 50 o C. The water heaters are
controlled by a digital, electronic master controller
which is provided with BMS and other external
interfaces. In the Nancy Astor Building, the water
heating system is controlled via the site Building
Available in 20 or 30 tube options, SOLARflo
evacuated tube collectors are ideal for larger
commercial water heating applications as they have
a higher annual, average thermal efficiency than
glazed flat plate collectors (83% against 78%) and,
operating at lower ambient temperatures, they are
capable of providing a higher annual percentage of
domestic hot water. In addition, they require less
of multi-residential, commercial and industrial
locations.
The ground breaking character of these products is
exemplified by the MAXXflo high performance
security
Responsible for looking after our
public buildings Don’t let us down!
With news earlier this year that a
staggering 20,000 confidential
patient records have gone missing after
thieves stole six laptops from St
George’s Hospital in Tooting1 (which
included names, dates of birth and
postcodes), security issues in public
sector buildings once again come to the
fore.
Hospitals, schools, council offices, care homes,
hostels, nurseries and other premises are all
vulnerable if they do not have adequate security.
Furthermore, as the St George’s case shows, cost
and damage repair aren’t the only worry; we also
have to gravely consider what might happen to the
confidential information from stolen records once in
the hands of criminals. Theft of computers made up
18% of all non-residential burglary according to
figures from ten years ago,2 and the more portable
technology becomes, the easier it is to steal, so we
can but imagine the figures today as technical
devices become smaller and smaller and easier to
transport, or indeed, steal.
Not only do thieves benefit at the expense of
taxpayers, local authorities and the government when
they sell on their ill-gotten goods, thousands of
individuals are also at risk from the potential misuse
of their details.
But from costly computers to expensive play
equipment, whatever public sector building it is your
job to protect, you can guarantee that the property
contains something of value to unscrupulous thieves
for whom security weaknesses will be their advantage
- and to the general public whose access to public
services might suffer if equipment is stolen, or whose
data protection might be infringed upon.
Crime and burglary of public sector buildings imposes
a huge cost on society. In 2006, the figures of just
one UK region show that burglars broke into local
schools an overwhelming 96 times3 - multiply this
across all UK regions and it doesn’t take a genius to
work out that if security measures were tighter, the
potential savings to local authorities (and taxpayers)
could be huge. And what of all the thousands other
public sector buildings that also suffer from break-ins
Surprisingly, getting security right and protecting
premises is quite a simple process – but if your job is
looking after the safety of a public sector building then
you cannot afford to economise on quality. From locks
and padlocks as the first line of defence, to motionsensor
alarm systems to detect intrusion, Kasp
Security is a leading supplier of quality products
designed to meet the most demanding security needs
of domestic, industrial and commercial users.
Kasp is a trusted brand whose products have been
designed and manufactured to the highest standards,
undergoing rigorous testing to ensure they not only
meet standardised requirements, but also surpass
them. In fact, in its first year of launch, Kasp’s 190
series High Security Padlock - ideally suited for largescale
security applications - was awarded the coveted
Silver award within the security category of The
Industry Awards 2007, organised by DIY Week,
Housewares Magazine and Hardware & Garden
Review. This industry accolade is testimony to the
strength and quality of the Kasp offering.
As well as offering a range of excellent padlocks and
locks, such as the high-security 160 Series Keyed
Alike Disc Padlocks - ideal for securing gates, and the
175 Series Armoured Shutter Locks for shutters, Kasp
is a leading supplier of wireless motion-sensor alarm
systems, ideal for detecting intruder disturbance
should for any reason, the first line of defence be
overcome.
The EMS 6101 Portable Motion Sensor is a
convenient and effective security device, detecting the
slightest movement and attracting immediate attention
through the ultra loud alarm. It can be fastened to
vulnerable entry points within public sector premises.
Alternatively, the EMS 6102 Wire-free 3 in 1 Alarm &
Light offers similar benefits to the EMS 6101, but
also, the device can be used as an emergency light
operated either manually, or through the PIR motion
sensor, very simply at the switch of a button.
For anyone in charge of public sector building
protection, it is worth remembering that it is not
always those without permission to be inside buildings
that are responsible for the theft that occurs within.
Internal cabinets, stockrooms and data storage inside
premises also need to be kept under lock and key,
and Kasp products are ideally suited to provide a
solution in this instance. For example, the versatile
Kasp 125 Series Premium Brass range is available in
a wide range of sizes and shackle options for cabinet
security, manufactured with precision mechanisms
that feature paracentric keyway and anti-pick
cylinders, providing effective protection against theft.
To aid those responsible for installing security
systems, Kasp products are rated according to the
level of security needed, from Yellow (Low Security),
to Orange (Medium Security) and Red (High
Security). A Red High Security product with a security
rating of 11-15 offers maximum protection and is likely
to be the type of level that hospitals, schools, council
offices and other public sector premises might require
for any external protection measures.
According to the Home Office Statistic Bulletin: Crime
in England and Wales 2006/07, the police recorded
329,759 non-domestic burglaries in 2006/074 - don’t
allow the premises in your care to become one of
these statistics. With a variety of high-end, durable
security products available on the market, we can all
work a little harder to keep thieves out, saving
taxpayers’ money and keeping their private details
under lock and key. Reader Reply No: 115100
“Wire-less security
upgrade for
Country Hotel”
Ashdown Park Hotel and
Country Club has
invested in EMS Group’s
Universe+ ACU universal
wire-less interfaces as the
basis for a recent security
upgrade.
The 106 bedroom hotel, which is
located in East Sussex’s beautiful
Ashdown Forest, is a listed 19th
century mansion house. It was
therefore of paramount importance not
to damage the historical interior of the
building during the upgrade.
The ACU is a unique universal
interface that connects any security
alarm panel to the Universe+ range of
wire-less devices such as PIRs,
versions in order to ensure workers acceptance.
Available from November, the Identicom With GPS
has been developed specifically for workers
constantly on the move such as traffic wardens,
district nurses, paramedics, logistics drivers and
cash in transit operatives as well as those who
operate in more rural locations e.g. forest workers,
engineers, surveyors and utility workers.
With the standard Identicom devices, users press an
amber alert button to notify their employer when
they know they are entering a potentially hazardous
situation. If they then have cause to press the red
alert, operators at the remote monitoring centre
retrieve the information on their locality, listens in on
the line to what is happening and co-ordinates the
appropriate emergency support – involving the
police if necessary. The new GPS devices support
this functionality further by pinpointing a worker’s
location to within a few metres and feeding current
and last known positions at the same time that an
audio escalation is being pursued.
As with existing Identicom devices, the worker is
empowered to define the point when they want to be
located, for example, when they feel their safety
may be compromised and therefore want the
reassurance of knowing that their location can be
pinpointed.
Identicom With GPS is currently being sold and
supported through SoloProtect a best-of-breed
service for lone workers delivering peace of mind to
worker and employer alike. RR No: 115023
contact switches
and break glass
enables any existing
hard-wired security
system to be
expanded without
the need to install
additional cable, no
matter what make of
control panel is
used. Utilising
868Mhz two-way
secure
communications, the Universe+ ACU
provides a low cost solution for
system upgrades that can quickly be
installed without disrupting business
operation or damaging the fabric of
the building.
The hotel used 16 ACUs to interface
over 50 new wire-less devices to the
existing security system. Each device
can be easily installed in less then 10
minutes, which means room
occupancy within the hotel is
unaffected. The upgrade was also
completed without the need to take
the existing security system off-line
and install cable between the security
devices and the ACUs.
Identicom models with GPS
Simple steps to
cut knife crime
There are nearly twenty
serious knife attacks
every week in England and
Wales.
This adds up to 22,000 knife crimes
every year and in many cases the
victims are innocent or vulnerable
individuals who find themselves alone
during the night hours. One
professional nationwide security
company – OCS - believes that
prevention is the key to safer streets
and is urging public authorities and
local employers to review knife crime
risks related to their buildings and
employees.
OCS says that by adopting a tailored
security solution which combines
greater use of public and private
CCTV, more secure access control to
buildings, up-to-date alarm systems
and a professional key holding service
– organisations can greatly reduce the
risk of knife attacks – particularly on
staff members called out when alarms
are triggered during the night hours.
In addition to personal back-up from
one of its SIA registered and CRBchecked
security guards, OCS also
recommends a tailored package of
technologies purpose-designed to act
as a strong deterrent against potential
knife attacks. For example, in the
Wiltshire town of Devizes, OCS
‘Lease-Sure’
Security and fire systems specialist
Niscayah has announced a new
range of systems/support rental
options which it is branding as Lease-
This flexible financing facility allows customers to
benefit from the opportunity to not only procure and
install a system, but also opt to have it maintained
and managed – all via a single, fixed price
repayment schedule. This schedule is adaptable to
allow for ‘technology refresh’ and a customer’s
evolving needs.
Explaining the Lease-Sure strategy, Syd Heals,
Niscayah’s COO of Commercial Security & Fire UK
operations said: “We have designed Lease-Sure
with the aim of attracting organisations who wish to
obtain optimum flexibility in remaining futureproofed
An industry first from
Zebra & DED!
Zebra’s First UHF Gen 2 RFID Plastic
Card Printers, the P330i and the
P430i are available now.
Pairing high performance with flexibility to expand
applications for access control, security and asset
tracking, DED introduce Ultra High Frequency (UHF)
encoding on the most popular performance class
printers from Zebra, the P330i and P430i plastic
card printers. Offering security options not readily
available on the market, UHF Gen 2 RFID encoded
cards can help to save time and costs, while
heightening security in a host of applications.
Providing increased read range compared to typical
smart card technology, this encoding option
complements Zebra’s new UHF cards that enable a
read-range of up to 30 per cent further than
standard UHF cards. Offering the industry’s first and
Fast growing high street fashion
retailer New Look has commissioned
a second major electronic security
installation from Secom plc at its
distribution centre at Lymedale,
Newcastle-under-Lyme.
The new installation of CCTV, an intruder alarm
system and an access control system secures a
purpose built base for the company’s e-business
operation, which doubles the size of its distribution
most versatile RFID-enabled capabilities in their
class for business, hospitality, recreation and a
variety of other applications, Zebra’s proprietary
UHF antenna is embedded in the card stock,
providing a longer read-range of up to 6 metres from
the sensor.
This UHF capability offers a number of key benefits:
* Enhances vehicle and fleet tracking to provide
fast, accurate information on transport, entry
and exit times
* Improved people tracking at entrances and exits
in high-security premises such as hospitals and
government buildings
* More efficient access control and visitor tracking
by ensuring individuals’ locations are known, as
well as ensuring access authentication to secure
areas
Easyprox compact keypad:
Access Control in a Door Handle
Paxton Access Ltd has recently
launched the Easyprox compact
keypad, a standalone system that
offers the same installation
convenience as its proximity
counterpart. This all-in-one,
battery powered, keypad, lock
and access control system is
perfect for internal security.
With its control electronics
housed within the keypad,
and the battery power
source replacing mains
wiring, it’s incredibly easy
to install.
Easyprox compact keypad
therefore provides an economical
answer to doors once deemed ‘too
insignificant or ‘too difficult’ to secure
due to inaccessible power supplies. The system’s
understated appearance of brushed steel and black
plastic makes it suitable for a wide
variety of applications.
“I think that Easyprox keypad is well
suited to a number of different
environments. For example in a retail
outlet it’s a great way to prevent
customers from entering ‘staff only’ areas
and stockrooms. Additional applications
could include classrooms, sports halls,
cleaning cupboards and university halls of
residence,” Adam Stroud, Sales and Marketing
Director, Paxton Access.
Adam continues, “In theory it’s even better value
than its proximity forerunner because
users don’t require tokens. I can’t
think of a more convenient
way of implementing
internal access control.
The system can be
installed, and in use in under two hours.”
Keytracker have the
key to simple,
effective security
Asset tracking and key control
specialists, Keytracker, are
celebrating their successful showcase
at Interbuild. And it was their low-cost,
mechanical key control system that
stole the show with its ability to
provide permanent organisation of a
building site’s keys, vehicles and
assets.
Keytracker have 12 years’ experience in supplying
bespoke electronic and mechanical key control
systems to organisations in the UK and worldwide,
and as their modular systems come in all shapes
and sizes, they expand to suit the business. So
whether you’re managing 10 keys or 1,000 keys,
there will be a Keytracker system that’s perfect for
you.
For everyday key management that doesn’t require
power, the Mechanical Keytracker works on the
principle of coloured key pegs and secure tags to
identify who has which key at all times.
If an electronic time stamping system is required
then it has to be ULTIMA. This innovative system
has so much to offer including advanced biometric
security technology, comprehensive embedded key
management software, inbuilt web server, email
alerts and SIM card software – all designed
to control key access remotely 24/7.
And for out of hours key management there’s the
Service Express, a key vending machine that
works like a cash point providing keys on entry of a
5-digit PIN, and the Drop Box, a
highly secure drop off point
enabling customers to deposit
keys or important documents out
of business hours.
Payne Security’s accreditation
expertise helps global sporting
event Leading document
authentication company
Payne Security has supplied highsecurity
accreditation laminates to a
prestigious global sporting event, which
was held in Beijing in Summer 2008.
The event organisers required personalised
accreditation for everybody who had clearance to
secure areas, such as the stadia, the athletes’
village, health facilities and the press room. Typical
groups included athletes, coaches, press, local
officials and volunteers, officials from participating
countries and the official organisers. Passes were
designed to grant access to some or all areas
depending on the sport and the holder’s accredited
KSS pulls out all the
stops for Rochester
Cathedral
Steeped in history,
Rochester Cathedral is a
beautiful building whose
architecture and ambience
enthrals all.
In addition, the beautiful services held
in the Cathedral provide comfort and
joy - due in no small part to the
wonderful music accompanying these.
From his perch high up amongst the
organ pipes, the organist has a very
restricted view of what is happening in
the Cathedral, situated as he is with
the nave on one side and the quire on
the other. This results in the organist
being unable always to accurately
synchronise his part in proceedings.
responsibilities.
This is the second event for the organiser for which
Payne Security has provided its expertise in secure
documents, following the successful accreditation of
a winter event in 2006. For the Summer 2008
games, the organisers required the addition of new
layers of security within the laminate, and Payne
Security delivered a range of hard-to-replicate
devices from its toolbox of security technologies.
These included an iridescent ink that alters colour as
the card is tilted, an invisible UV ink with microprint,
and a registered HRI holographic label that covered
the cardholder’s image.
All passes were produced locally from the data and
images sent via each participating country’s
committee to the host city; a database was the
created from which all personalised passes were
produced and then sent back to the various
countries.
A large format pass was specified, due to both the
large amount of data that needed to be incorporated
onto it and to ensure maximum visibility from a
distance. In addition, the organisers felt that a larger
pass would also provide attendees with an
impressive souvenir of the event.
To remedy this, the Cathedral had
used an old CCTV system with static
cameras which fed back to a monitor
in the organ loft, thus providing the
organist with some idea as to what
was going on below. However, the
definition and the quality were not
sufficient to pick up subtleties from the
conductor of the choir and it was felt
that this situation needed to be
improved.
Kent & Sussex Security (KSS) were
asked to upgrade the system, ideally
using high definition pan/tilt/zoom
cameras to give the organist a better
perspective on events below. This
would also provide close up real time
surveillance of the conductor, choir
master or person leading a service, be
they situated in the nave or the quire.
The installation needed to be
exceptionally discreet in order to
maintain the beauty and the dignity of
the building as well as paying due
respect to its age and the very fabric
of its material. KSS worked carefully
to ensure that there was no damage
to the ancient woodwork and
stonework, and the project
successfully passed the scrutiny of the
Cathedral’s Fabric Advisory
Committee. RR No: 115088
of The Year
One of the first British audio visual
companies to have a web
presence has collected the AV
industry’s coveted Web Site of The
Year trophy at the tenth annual AV
Awards.
Saville Audio Visual - one of the UK’s largest
professional AV businesses - launched its first
web site in 1996. In the past year, the company’s
in-house advertising team has re-designed and
re-built the site as totally new focal point for its
online business strategy in videoconferencing,
digital signage and integrated AV systems.
Staged at the London Hilton Park Lane, the
presentations were hosted by ‘Mock The Week’
TV comedian Frankie Boyle and celebrated
excellence in all sectors of the professional audio
visual industry.
In the highly competitive Web Site category, the
fresh approach pleased the judging panel, who
said: “Saville won with a site that looks simple and
is easy to use, while providing clients with a mine
of useful information.”
With emphasis on case studies to promote the
company’s ability to deliver effective AV solutions,
the company regards the site as a vital brand
awareness tool. Downloadable product
information and manufacturer links provide a
valuable resource for customers, suppliers and
Saville personnel.
Generating over 100 visits per day before the end
biggest source of new sales leads. Since the
launch of the new design this year, daily visitors
have more than doubled, with almost 50% moving
on to the linked e-commerce site.
The win brings the company’s successes to a
total of twenty three national industry awards
within the space of eight years.
British firm wins euro millions
Kent based Intumescent Systems Ltd
has successfully secured a massive
contract to supply millions of the
Envirograf brand of fire protective
gaskets to a variety of top European
electrical manufacturers of sockets and
switches.
With stringent fire regulations now being enforced,
the electrical manufacturers have seen compelling
evidence of fire tests on an unprotected socket in a
fire. The evidence shows how the front plate of an
electrical socket when attacked by fire, would either
disintegrate or sag forward in minutes, leaving the
box at the complete mercy of the fire. Without any
protection, the fire would be able to rapidly enter the
socket, and pass unopposed through the cavity of
the wall, and fiercely spread along the cables to
other parts of the building.
Extensive European and UK fire protection tests on
Envirograf gaskets have shown that when attacked
by fire, these gaskets will expand to form a
formidable fire barrier in the socket box and offer a
minimum integrity of 87 minutes. This incredible
resistance will dramatically reduce the fire spreading
to other parts of the building and allow the buildings
occupants, ample time to safely evacuate. The
reduction of fires in the home and business is
absolutely essential to avoid serious injury or death
more than ‘fit for purpose’ and the overall project
aim has been to deliver 1st class training facilities
Edition IEE & Building Regulations.
Derek Ward (Managing Director of Intumescent
Systems Ltd) feels that all existing electrical boxes
currently in use should be fitted with these important
gaskets and from less than 50p they could save
many lives and reduce damage to property.
Merlin expands its rental fleet after
successful launch of plug & play
Merlin Power Management is
expanding its rental fleet by
approximately 20% following another
successful year by the company’s
Rental Department.
The additional 30kVA, 60kVA and 100kVA
generators, will be available with connecting cables,
control panels, distribution boards, wheel clamps,
etc and will help Merlin manage the increasing
demand for rental generators from new and existing
customers.
Primarily purchased for the Events market, the
decision to expand the rental
fleet follows the successful launch last year of
Merlin’s ‘Plug & Play’ generator rental system. The
system, which was widely heralded as a significant
innovation in this market, enables an on-site
generator installation to be up and running in less
than 30 minutes.
classrooms, a gym, refectories, a hair
studio, a beauty salon - even a travel
agent for the 5000 plus students.
Cleaning tasks are varied, from
cleaning up hair and makeup, to wood
shavings and metal particles, food,
catering waste and all the usual paper,
cans and rubbish left by the students.
The College is open from 8am – 10pm
necessitating 20 cleaners working in
shifts from early morning to late at
night. There is a site manager during
the main college hours and a 24/7
help desk back up.
Mike Greaves, the Procurement
Officer said: “We chose LCC from
over 30 firms that showed interest and
10 tenders. LCC were innovative,
realistic, showed experience of college
cleaning which most other firms could
not. I am already receiving
complements from senior staff on the
great improvement to our cleaning.”
LCC has a strong track record in
college cleaning. Clients include The
Cambridge Regional College,
Bournemouth College, Epping Forest
College, Queen Elizabeth College,
Southgate College, the University
College for the Creative Arts (KIAD),
Nilfisk’s new combi
offers compact solution
to industrial dust and
dirt
A compact design and superb
cleaning efficiency make
Nilfisk’s new CR 1000
Combination Scrubber/Dryer
and Sweeper an ideal choice
for dealing with dust and dirt in
manufacturing plants,
warehouses, workshops, car
parks and other mid-duty
industrial cleaning
applications. Measuring just
221 x 117 x 132cm, this latest
addition to Nilfisk’s ride-on range can turn within a 240cm wide aisle and can be
used in even hard-to-reach or congested areas.
The CR 1000 is available from Nilfisk in a choice of two models to suit different
cleaning demands.
Nilfisk’s CR 1000 combination machines deliver cleaning performance and
productivity that match much larger models, with a brush pressure up to 90kg and
a theoretical cleaning rate of 7,500m2/h. A double vac squeegee system leaves
floors dry and safe after cleaning, and the squeegee swings out on turns to pick up
any excess water. The machines also benefit from Nilfisk’s ‘no tools’ servicing
concept for the brush, broom and squeegee to minimise maintenance, and
operators have easy access to battery packs for speedy changing as required.
Developed to withstand the rigours of industrial environments, Nilfisk’s CR 1000
Combination Scrubber/Dryer and Sweeper features a heavy duty steel construction
and bumpers, plus a powerful hydraulic system to drive the main broom, scrub deck
and squeegee. The 71 litre hopper is also hydraulically driven and can handle light
and heavy debris. As an added convenience, the hopper’s ‘low dump’ design
means it can be emptied at a height of just 35cm, which also allows easy cleaning.
Like all Nilfisk cleaning equipment, the CR 1000 Combination floor cleaners have
an ergonomic and user-friendly design. Both the steering wheel and seat can be
adjusted to suit individual operators, and a simple control panel makes the
machines easy to use with the minimum of training.
EPAT 1600 still the best for basic testing
As the HSE continues its campaign for sensible risk
management, PAT specialist Martindale is reminding firms that
a basic tester could be all that’s needed to ensure safety.
‘There are many pieces of testing equipment out there that are
all-singing, all-dancing – we make them too, for those
industrial situations that demand their capabilities,’ said Steve
Dunning of Martindale. ‘But the fact remains that in many
cases, a simple, reliable and easy-to-use PAT tester is all a
competent user needs.’
The HSE campaign aims to promote the sensible assessment and
management of risk rather than create an unrealistically overprotective environment
and growing numbers of organisations are signing up to it. (see
http://www.hse.gov.uk/risk/principlespoints.htm) With its one button, one test
approach, the EasyPAT 1600 is an ideal manual PAT for those needing to do a basic
test as quickly as possible while still fulfilling legal requirements.
