DAY SIX TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS UMAG <strong>2012</strong><br />

ONE SILVER AND 2 BRONZE MEDALS<br />

The women’s 70 <strong>team</strong> was outplayed in the final of the Teams Championships at the ATP stadium<br />

to<strong>day</strong>. However, the <strong>team</strong> can be well satisfied with their week of representing <strong>Australia</strong>. In the<br />

opening rubber, Margaret Wayte lost to Cathy Anderson 3 and 1. Judy Hancy, playing Donna Fales<br />

(nee Floyd) a former Federation Cup player, lost 0 and 1. In the dead doubles rubber Linda Pengelly<br />

and Helen Muir lost 2 and 1. All ladies played good tennis but were outclassed by superior players.<br />

Our ladies collected silver medals for their efforts and performed above their world ranking.<br />

Womens 70 finalists: USA and <strong>Australia</strong><br />

Our women’s 60 <strong>team</strong> won its match against France and won the bronze medal. Wendy Gilchrist<br />

won the first rubber 0 and 5; Kerry Ballard lost the second rubber 3 and 0. Kerry and Wendy won the<br />

deciding doubles 1 and 0 to secure third placing.<br />

The men’s 80 <strong>team</strong> also secured the bronze medals by defeating France 2-1. Adrian Alle won 2 and<br />

4. However, Bert Barwick forfeited his rubber due to illness. John O’Brien and Doug Corbett won the<br />

doubles 1 and 4.


Our men’s 60 <strong>team</strong> missed out on a bronze when Peter Jenkins lost his rubber 4 and 2. Ray Bray also<br />

lost 0 and 0 and Max Bates and Peter Jenkins were given a walkover in the doubles. Consequently,<br />

they finished in fourth place.<br />

The women’s 80 <strong>team</strong> finished fifth and did not play to<strong>day</strong>.<br />

Our women’s 65 <strong>team</strong> played the Netherlands to<strong>day</strong> and won 2-1 and finished in fifth place. Katie<br />

Patterson won 2 and 1 and Carol Campling lost 63, 26, 16. In the doubles Carol <strong>team</strong>ed with Lou<br />

Griffith and won 60, 62.<br />

The men’s 65 <strong>team</strong> lost in its match to Great Britain 1-2. The women’s 75 <strong>team</strong> plays Canada<br />

tomorrow to decide fifth and <strong>six</strong>th placings.<br />

Bruce Rehn got the men’s 70 <strong>team</strong> away to a good start by winning 26, 64, 63 and was supported by<br />

Dennis Bindon with a 75, 60 victory. Tomorrow this <strong>team</strong> plays Germany for eighth position.<br />

The men’s 75 <strong>team</strong> won 3-0 over Denmark with Ray Woodforde winning 46 , 63, 62. Ian King won 63,<br />

60 and Ian and Alan Hocking won the doubles 3 and 3.<br />
