Israel Cinema Nights<br />

Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural<br />

Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor<br />

and Board of County Commissioners.”<br />

Contemporary Israeli film is brought to the big screen on a bi-monthly basis. Films have English subtitles and are<br />

screened at the Frank Theatres/Intracoastal Mall. Tickets - $10, may be purchased in advance by calling 305-932-<br />

4200, ext.128, or at the theater - 45 minutes prior to the start of the movie.<br />

• FIVE HOURS FROM PARIS • Thursday, September 8, 8 pm<br />

First-Place winner at the Haifa International Film Festival (2009) this Leonid Prudovsky film tells the story of a taxi<br />

driver with a burning desire to visit Paris, a five hour flight from Tel Aviv, but his fear of flying stands in his way. He<br />

forms a bond with a married Russian immigrant planning to immigrate to Canada. As the movie unfolds, the<br />

chances of these two individuals ending up together is revealed.<br />

The story of two professors, father and son, in the Talmud Department of Jerusalem’s Hebrew University, who are<br />

rivals for the country's most prestigious award, the Israel Prize. Lior Ashkenazi and Shlomo Bar Aba star in the film,<br />

which is one of the most anticipated projects from Israel this year. The film was awarded “best screenplay” at the<br />

2011 Cannes Film Festival.<br />

Yiddish Film Series - Wednesdays, November 16, 30, December 14, 28, January 11<br />

Take a nostalgic trip to the Yiddish world before World War II and see some golden oldies. Facilitator: Elaine Rudner,<br />

who has been involved in judaic education for over 40 years in the South Florida area.<br />

November 16: Mamele (with Molly Picon) This film has that special brand of humor and song that made Molly<br />

Picon the undisputed queen of Yiddish musicals.<br />

November 30: Tevye (with Maurice Schwartz) Long before there was Fiddler, Tevye was the original story, without<br />

the music. This is an adaptation of Sholem Aleichem’s classic story.<br />

December 14: Mirele Efros This film is the study of family relationships, particularly between a mother and<br />

daughter-in-law.<br />

December 28: Where is My Child - Oy Vey! What tzooris this is about! She gives up her child for adoption, and<br />

spends her life looking for him! Taken from the pages of the Forwards.<br />

January 11: Yiddle Mitn Fiddle - The most delightful Yiddish film ever made! A 1936 musical with Milly Picon who<br />

plays a young woman who poses as a man in order to join a band of musicians traveling the Polish countryside.<br />

Screenings begin at 1pm. Films are in black & white with English subtitles. Discussion following each film.<br />

Gilbert.<br />
