The Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center is dedicated to the enrichment of Jewish life; fostering the spiritual, 

emotional, and physical development of its individual members through all of life’s stages and circumstances; and 

strengthening the connection with the People and Culture of Israel, along with other Jewish communities throughout the world. 

The MAR-JCC represents a model of acceptance, understanding, and diversity. As such, people look at the MAR-JCC as a 

Center of excellence that epitomizes how shared Jewish values support a vibrant and evolving constituency. 

The MAR-JCC is a beneficiary agency of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and the United Way of Miami-Dade County, 

and a member of the Jewish Community Center Association of North America. 

Dear Friends, 

We continue to marvel at the scope and activity that takes place at our Michael-Ann Russell JCC. As you flip through the 

pages of this season’s Program Guide, you can see the extensive programming that we offer…for those who are two 

months old to those who are 102 years old. From the swimming pool to the athletic fields, from the art studio to the fitness 

and dance studios, from the early childhood center to the senior lounge, from the stage to the balance beam, from the 

gym to the tennis courts, from special events to special needs, from birthday parties to discussions about political parties, 

from Kosher Subway to Elsie’s Cafe…our JCC has become that Center of activity, that central meeting place for our North 

Miami-Dade Jewish community. 

With the completion of our Social Center, our energies are now turning to begin the process of strategic planning…to 

determine the short-term and long-term needs of our demographically evolving Jewish community and how the MAR-JCC 

may best fill those needs by evaluating its staffing structure and facilities. This effort, spearheaded by Ariel Bentata, will help 

us paint a picture of what our JCC will aspire to look like not only in 5 years, but in 25 years, as well. 

We remain so thankful to our Greater Miami Jewish Federation and The United Way of Miami-Dade, and sponsors, donors, 

and supporters, and to you...for your involvement and participation. 

During this coming program year, it is our goal to further YOUR involvement in our MAR-JCC through strengthening and 

expanding our numerous program and administrative committees. Our professional staff is eager to work with YOU and 

have YOU become an integral part of agency’s growth and development. Please do not hesitate to contact us so we

ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP 

Benefits all Hillel students and Jacobson Sinai Academy middle school students. This membership entitles students use of MAR-JCC 

facilities except the Fitness Center. A teen interested in utilizing the Fitness Center must become a student All Access Member. 

Associate Members may enroll in enrichment classes, after-school and sports & leagues programs, and Hebraica’s Maccabi Tzair at 

Associate Member rates. This membership is valid during the school year and does not apply for Camp Sol Taplin enrollment. 

All Members and Guests under 10 years of age must be enrolled in a program or accompanied by an adult in order to utilize the MAR- 

JCC campus.

Membership Dues - Payment Options 

1. Pay in full and save 5%. 

2. Automatic monthly payment system (Master Card, Visa, American Express and Discover) based on a yearly contract. 

Automatic monthly payments are easy and secure. Once enrolled, there is no lapse in membership UNLESS the 

membership office receives in writing a cancellation request at least 30 days prior to membership renewal date. 

Automatic monthly payment dues plus the processing fee of $3 will be processed for your convenience. There is a $10 

declined credit card fee, and a $30 returned check fee. Membership renewal month is set from the time of enrollment 

and will NOT be altered unless there has been a membership lapse of at least six months. At least one adult in household 

must sign the membership agreement/contract. Membership dues are NON-REFUNDABLE AND NON-TRANSFERABLE and 

cover a minimum one-year period. Dues cannot be pro-rated. The MAR-JCC is open to the entire community, regardless 

of race, religion, or national origin. 

Membership Cards 

Every member 13 years and up is required to carry a photo membership card. To facilitate entrance into the MAR-JCC, 

please present your membership card at the front gate and to the Front, Fitness, and Tennis desk receptionists. Though we 

make every effort to recognize our members, we ask everyone to carry his/her membership card at all times. If your 

membership card is lost or stolen, please notify the Membership Services Department. A $10 fee will be charged for 

replacement cards. Membership cards are non-transferable and can be revoked upon violation of MAR-JCC policies. 

Parking 

To expedite entry to the MAR-JCC, all members should have a valid MAR-JCC parking permit in the windshield of their 

cars (may be obtained at the Front Desk of the Main Building). The MAR-JCC reserves the right to tow (at driver’s/owner’s 

expense) or place a boot (removal charge of $50) on any vehicle parked in an unauthorized or undesignated parking 

area. 

Use of the MAR-JCC 

The MAR-JCC, a membership based organization, provides programs and services to both its membership and the 

community-at-large. The use of MAR-JCC facilities are primarily available to members and their guests. Programs open to 

only JCC members are noted in their promotional materials. 

Guest Policy 

All Access Members are entitled to bring a guest up to three times a year at a fee of $10/adult and $5/senior or ”junior” 

(13 and under) for use of MAR-JCC Health & Wellness facilities. Guests must be accompanied by a member. Same nonmember 

guest may utilize the MAR-JCC up to 3 times per year. Out-of-town guests who belong to another JCC outside 

the area receive complimentary guest privileges for up to two weeks per year. Upon presenting a valid membership card 

from the other JCC to the Membership Department. 

Class & Program Registration 

To register during early registration and receive priority registration and member rates on programs, membership must be in 

good standing for the duration of the program. If membership expires during the course of the program, members must either 

pay for the renewal at registration, or give a post-dated payment for the renewal. Payment must accompany all registrations 

for classes and programs. To be eligible to register, member accounts must be up-to-date including membership fees. 

Associate and non-members may register for classes, when specified. No phone registration will be accepted. Registration 

will be accepted in person or by fax with completed registration form using Master Card, Visa, Discover, or American 

Express with registrar approval. There will be a $30 charge for any returned checks, and a $10 fee for any declined credit 

card. A registration will not be processed, a space (if available) will not be reserved in the class or program, and 

attendance will not be permitted until a signed registration form (accompanied by payment) is received. The MAR-JCC 

reserves the right to cancel any class or program due to insufficient registration and fees will be refunded. 

Fee Assistance

Program Refunds 

Will be awarded if request is made no later than the second week of class for those classes offered on a semester basis. For 

classes that have a yearly registration, refund requests must be made by the 4th week of the program. Refund requests after 

this period of time must be addressed in writing to the Executive Director explaining the extenuating circumstances for the 

request. Allow 4 weeks for refund checks. There is a processing fee of $35 per transaction. NO REFUNDS or CREDITS will be 

issued for programs requiring try-outs, such as sports travel teams & Bamachol dance troupes. Credits expire one year from 

date of issue. 

Payment for Private Lessons/Personal training 

Per MAR-JCC policy and for insurance purposes, payment arrangements for all personal training and private lessons at the 

MAR-JCC must be processed through a MAR-JCC registrar. MAR-JCC membership is required. Only approved personnel and 

independent contractors employed by the MAR-JCC are eligible to provide personal training and private instruction. 

"Outside Professionals" Use of the MAR-JCC 

No outside trainers, teachers, coaches, tutors, therapists, pros, etc., may utilize the MAR-JCC for professional purposes - even 

in the company of and with the permission of a MAR-JCC member, without written authorization from the MAR-JCC 

Executive Director. "Outside Professionals" receiving said authorization must comply with all insurance requirements and 

provide all required documentation. 

Personal Belongings/Lockers 

The MAR-JCC is not liable for the theft, loss, or damage to any personal belongings or property. You may bring a lock to 

secure your belongings in a “daily locker” in our locker room facilities, Scheck Family Gymnasium, or by the Program Building 

adjacent to the Feldenkreis Hanono Feig Athletic Field. The lock must be removed by the end of each day or it will be 

removed by MAR-JCC staff. Permanent annual lockers are available annually in the men’s and women’s locker rooms for 

$65. Visit the membership office, or call ext. 145/146. 

Security 

Security and safety are our highest priority. The MAR-JCC reserves the right to check trunks and vehicles for security 

purposes. It also reserves the right to check backpacks, lunch boxes, and other types of sealed or closed containers without 

prior notification. No weapons are permitted on campus. Among the permanent security systems at the JCC are: 

• Security gates and guards • Surveillance cameras, recording systems and monitors at strategic places throughout the 

buildings and outdoor areas • Signage that will alert all visitors that the premises are under surveillance • Emergency 

alarms that are directly connected to law enforcement authorities • A photo I.D. is required to enter the MAR-JCC - 

access to the MAR-JCC may be denied if appropriate I.D. is not presented. 

The overall effect is a high level of security at the MAR-JCC that prompts quick action in the event of any danger signs. 

Bullying 

The MAR-JCC is a meeting place that promotes friendship, belonging, and camaraderie. MAR-JCC members, guests, and 

staff are expected to treat one another with respect and dignity and no form of bullying will be tolerated. Any act of 

bullying should be brought to the attention of MAR-JCC staff and may result in suspension from the MAR-JCC. 

Cell Phones 

Cell phones may not be used in any MAR-JCC bathroom or locker room facility and when operating a vehicle on the MAR- 

JCC’s Sanford L. Ziff Campus. 

Shabbat 

In recognition of the significance of Shabbat, the MAR-JCC encourages its members to use its facilities for rest, relaxation, 

and family interaction. Sports and fitness facilities are open to JCC members only on Saturday, from 1-6 pm. Business and 

membership offices are closed.

Operating hours and openings may vary in observance of Jewish and national holidays. Please refer to the “Dates to Watch

Kashrut/Food Service 

All food provided and used within the MAR-JCC facility must be Glatt kosher. Food service must be provided by the MAR- 

JCC’s in-house Glatt kosher food service purveyor, Kosher Subway, Inc. To accommodate its members and guests, there are 

two food service operations on the MAR-JCC’s Sanford L. Ziff Campus- Kosher Subway and Elsie’s Cafe that operate Sunday- 

Friday. For food service questions, call Maurice Lichy, at 305-778-5946. 

Room & Party Rental 

The MAR-JCC offers its rooms, and various facilities for rent for parties (for members and associate members), reunions, and 

business meetings. Food service must be provided by the MAR-JCC’s in-house Glatt kosher food service provider. For bookings 

and more information, call ext. 103/195. 

Caring for our JCC...and our environment 

As part of our responsibility to care for the environment, please dispose recyclable cans, bottles, and paper in the many 

recycle bins located throughout the campus. Please use these easily identifiable containers for recyclables, not for garbage. 

At the same time, we ask all members and guests to use trash receptacles to dispose of their garbage so that we may 

present the JCC with a clean & welcoming ambience. 

Non-Smoking Zone 

The MAR-JCC is a non-smoking facility. Please refrain from smoking at the MAR-JCC at all times. 

No Pets 

As a licensed child care facility, concerned about hygienics combined with a sensitivity to those with allergies and fear of 

animals, pets are not permitted at the MAR-JCC. 

Gift Certificates & Gift Cards & Tribute Cards 

MAR-JCC gift certificates are perfect for any occasion. Available for any amount, gift certificates may be purchased for 

membership, fitness, and tennis. Call the Membership Services Department for information at ext. 145/146. Gift cards may be 

purchased for Kosher Subway and Elsie’s Cafe directly from these two restaurants. If you wish to acknowledge a birthday or 

other simcha, extend condolences on the loss of a loved one, or extend holiday greetings, we invite you to purchase a 

Tribute Card in the amount of $18. An acknowledgement of your tax deductible contribution (that benefits the Scholarship 

Fund) will be mailed by the MAR-JCC to that particular individual family-call Iris Kohn at 305-932-4200 x141.

Hurricane Preparation Procedures 

In the event that we are confronted with the threat/impact of a tropical weather system, the MAR-JCC will follow (in most 

instances) the recommendations of Miami/Dade’s Public School System. During summer vacation, directives from the National 

Weather Service will be followed. Once a decision to close is made, the MAR-JCC will notify local TV & Radio stations (e.g. - 

channels 4,6,7,& 10; WIOD, ZETA, LOVE 94, WLRN) to include in public service announcements.

The Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center/Sanford L. Ziff Campus is utilized by businesses, and nonprofit 

community agencies serving our community. A number of them either meet regularly at the MAR-JCC

Greater Miami Jewish Federation (North Dade/Aventura Branch) 

For more than 70 years, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation has been working to mobilize human and financial resources 

to care for those in need, strengthen Jewish life and advance the unity, values and shared purpose of the Jewish people in 

Miami, in Israel and in 64 other countries worldwide. Through the Annual Federation/UJA Campaign, Federation supports

About our program: 

• Infant/Toddler Center (ITC) (Ages 2 months - 2 years) 

A 12-month program offering a safe environment where you can leave your child with complete confidence 

and peace-of-mind. Children are grouped by age and enjoy music and movement, finger play, and 

playground time, as well as holiday celebrations and weekly Shabbat programs. Appropriate challenges are 

built into activities to encourage each child’s developmental, cognitive, and social growth using the model of 

the Creative Curriculum for Infants and Toddlers. 

• Playgroup (Ages 2 - 3 years) 

A 12-month program that incorporates music, movement, social interaction, and playground fun, into the basic 

components of early learning. Classrooms are center-based with language development activities, small and 

gross motor activity centers, and cognitive growth activities. These activities are blended together to offer 

toddlers the opportunity to learn and grow in a stimulating and safe environment using the model of the 

Creative Curriculum for Infants and Toddlers. Included in the curriculum is music, Israeli dance, and physical 

education, all conducted by program specialists, and a weekly Shabbat program.

Center-based classrooms are set up for areas of math, science, writing, reading, art, manipulatives, library, 

language, and housekeeping/life skills using the model of the Creative Curriculum for Preschool. Outside 

playtime provides gross motor development in the Jordan Savage Playground. Jewish holiday celebrations, 

Shabbat programming, mitzvot, and Jewish culture are integrated into the program. Weekly activities that are 

part of the regular curriculum and conducted by program specialists include music, physical education (swim 

and sports instruction), and rikudim (Israeli dance).

Join us for our first FREE parenting workshop that will provide parents with tools they may need to help

Communication That Works • November 9, 9:30-11:30am 

Good communication is the number one parenting skill for successful parents. This workshop will teach 

how to communicate effectively with your child(ren); discuss the use of "door openers" instead of "door 

slammers" and learn about active listening, the use of empathy, problem solving, and the "good" use of 

praise. Review principles to improve communication with your child(ren), from toddlers to teenagers.

Dr. Patricia Jaegerman is a licensed Psychologist with a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of 

Professional Psychology, with a specialty in Couples and Family Therapy. She works with multicultural parenting groups

Hebraica emphasizes the importance of promoting Jewish Identity, Jewish values, a 

love for Israel, and the importance of family and community. Hebraica reaches out to 

all segments of our diverse Jewish community through ongoing youth programs, 

holiday celebrations and festivals, family activities, lectures, and seminars. 

maccabi tzair, miami grades K-10 

Maccabi Tzair Miami, a branch of Maccabi World Union, serves as one of the few “Jewish Youth Movements” 

in our community. Through its programming, Jewish youth are engaged in activities promoting Jewish identity, 

the People and Land of Israel, and Jewish socialization. Madrichim (Leaders) in our Youth Program are 

graduates of our School of Madrichim, who have been trained to conduct social, cultural, educational, and 

recreational activities with their Chanichim (group members) through varied peulot (activities).

bamachol dance academy 

Bamachol Dance Academy, offers Israeli Dance, Ballet, Jazz, Latin dance, Hip-Hop and skills 

development, friendship, mutual respect, and Jewish culture, under the supervision of highly qualified 

and talented staff. The Academy is performance oriented - allowing each child to “learn dance, while 

dancing.” Being part of a choreography gives each child notions of space orientation, the sense of

Israel programs & resource center 

Israeli Programs, Celebrations, & Films 

The Israel Programs and Resource Center is a central resource to strengthen the ties that connect Miami-Dade County Jewry 

with the People and Culture of Israel. The Israel Programs and Resource Center, under the direction of a Community Shaliach, 

is made possible through the combined efforts of the MAR-JCC and the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, with support from 

the Jewish Agency for Israel and Maccabi World Union. 

Shinshiniyim 

North Miami Dade’s relationship with our Partnership community of Yerucham (Israel) will continue to be 

strengthened through the presence of Ido Abargel and Mor Melker. These two post-high school young adults are 

representing their home town of Yerucham as “Shinshiniyim” - cultural emissaries - who bring the flavor of Israel 

and the Zionistic spirit of Yerucham to classroom settings in Jewish day schools and Hebrew 

schools, and to Jewish youth groups and organizations. These two young representatives of 

their community and country have deferred their army service by one year so we may 

benefit from their knowledge, enthusiasm, and commitment to Jewish Peoplehood. Home 

hospitality is provided to the “Shinshins” to further the cultural exchange nature of this 

program. Families interested in hosting a “Shinshin” (one male, one female) for a minimum 

of 1 month, are invited to call Dror Gershoni, at 305-932-4200 x128. 

Cultural and Educational Programs 

•ISRAEL EDUCATION YEARLY COURSE FOR TEENS • A community initiative in partnership with local synagogues: 

Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus, Highland Lakes Shul, and Temple Sinai. 

Eligible participants must be entering grades 11 or 12. Developed with Jerusalem Online University, The David 

Project, and Makom’s educational materials of the Jewish Agency for Israel, this monthly course aims to 

educate our community's teens and give them a better understanding of the State of Israel- its origins, its historic 

connection to the Jewish people, and the complexities of Israel as a Jewish state in the Middle East. It also 

teaches them how to be proponents of Israel while in college and beyond. Meetings will be held at each one of 

the participating agencies and therefore will connect our community's teens to the diverse Jewish community of 

North Miami-Dade so that they can form a stronger friendship base and activism network. Begins Wednesday,

An initiative is underway to unite Jews from around the world in the exploration and celebration of our shared

Alan and Diane Lieberman Children’s Cultural Arts Series 

Celebrating its 17th season, the Alan and Diane Lieberman Children’s Cultural Arts Series has brought educational 

and entertaining performances/productions to young audiences from the North Miami-Dade community. Since 

its inception, the Series has served as an important introduction into the world of the arts through the medium of 

music, drama, and dance, performed by national and international professional theatre companies/performing 

artists. This year’s Series will continue to be offered as field trip experiences for both public and private schools in 

North Miami-Dade. 

In advance of the show, educators use a Study Buddy to prepare their students for their theatre experience. 

A “Q &A” with cast members/performing artists concludes each program furthering the educational nature of the

To ensure that this introduction to “the world of the arts” is made available to all segments of our student

Take a nostalgic trip to the Yiddish world before World War II and see some golden oldies. Facilitator: Elaine Rudner, 

who has been involved in judaic education for over 40 years in the South Florida area. 

November 16: Mamele (with Molly Picon) This film has that special brand of humor and song that made Molly 

Picon the undisputed queen of Yiddish musicals. 

November 30: Tevye (with Maurice Schwartz) Long before there was Fiddler, Tevye was the original story, without 

the music. This is an adaptation of Sholem Aleichem’s classic story. 

December 14: Mirele Efros This film is the study of family relationships, particularly between a mother and 

daughter-in-law. 

December 28: Where is My Child - Oy Vey! What tzooris this is about! She gives up her child for adoption, and 

spends her life looking for him! Taken from the pages of the Forwards. 

January 11: Yiddle Mitn Fiddle - The most delightful Yiddish film ever made! A 1936 musical with Milly Picon who 

plays a young woman who poses as a man in order to join a band of musicians traveling the Polish countryside.

All classes will participate in an end-of-season presentation for family and friends, and be taught by 

Ashley Blake Fisher, a recent addition to the J-CAT family. Ashley joins us from her home of the last 6 six years, 

Walt Disney World, where she performed as an actress, singer, and dancer. As a member of Actor's Equity 

Association, Ashley holds a BFA in Musical Theatre and has toured as a singer in over 110 cities spanning 6 

continents. As a teacher and director, she worked with the Patel Conservatory in Tampa, where she directed 

numerous shows, taught musical theatre and private voice. 

J-CAT Junior Theatre Classes:

TQOL is funded by the State of Florida through the Alliance for Aging, by Miami-Dade County, by the

exercise training to improve the ability of senior adults to perform necessary activities of daily living 

and utilizes social events and educational programs to enhance and promote each participant’s

Wednesdays, November 16, 30, December 14, 28, and January 11 

Take a nostalgic trip to the Yiddish world before World War II. See the Golden oldies of the Yiddish Cinema. 

The films all depict life at that time for Jews in America. They deal with classic dilemmas of immigration, 

intermarriage, poverty, loss, and love. The stars & theatres of these films are gone, but the wonderful 

memories linger on! 

Facilitator: Elaine Rudner, who has been been involved in judaic education for over 40 years in the South 

Florida area. 

November 16: Mamele (with Molly Picon) This film has that special brand of humor and song that made Molly 

Picon the undisputed queen of Yiddish musicals. 

November 30: Tevye (with Maurice Schwartz) Long before there was Fiddler, Tevye was the original story, 

without the music. This is an adaptation of Sholem Aleichem’s classic story. 

December 14: Mirele Efros This film is the study of Family relationships, particularly between a mother and 

daughter-in-law. (Jewish Queen Lear) I’m glad she’s not in my family! 

December 28: Where is My Child - Oy Vey! What tzooris this is about! She gives up her child for adoption, and 

spends her life looking for him! Taken from the pages of the Forwards. 

January 11: Yiddle Mitn Fiddle - Start the New Year with the most delightful Yiddish film ever made! A 1936 

musical with Milly Picon who plays a young woman who poses as a man in order to join a band of musicians 

traveling the Polish countryside.

The Edith and Saul Schmidt Aquatics Department is dedicated to teaching personal water safety to participants of all ages. 

Indoor Pool (ext. 147) 

This is a heated 25-yard swimming pool. The temperature is maintained between 84-86 degrees. 

Lap Swimming Policy 

Swimmers are required to share lap lanes when necessary. Lifeguards will place swimmers together with similar abilities. 

Outdoor Pool - Lap swimming is available all year-round with the exception of summer during Camp Sol Taplin operating hours. 

Private Swim Policy 

For every 4 hour package, the client is entitled to 2 cancellations before being charged-24 hour cancellation notice required 

(otherwise it will count as a lesson). The 4 hour package expires 2 months after the first lesson is given, regardless of proper 

cancellation. For 2 hour packages (upon approval), 1 cancellation will be allowed, but requires 24 hours notice. The 2 hour 

package will expire 1 month after the first lesson is given. NO REFUNDS.
