Bishop McGann-Mercy
Diocesan High School
winter 2011 newsletter
The New Man on the Block
The beginning of each school
year fosters a feeling of
hope, excitement and the
opportunity to reconnect
with old friends and meet new ones. This
past September, Bishop McGann-Mercy
Diocesan High School welcomed Mr.
Carl Semmler as its new Principal. While
Mr. Semmler grew up in Valley Stream
and attended G.W. Hewlett High School,
the first day of school at McGann-Mercy
was like coming home.
Having graduated NYU with a
Bachelors Degree, he pursued a career in
the secular sector, working for Scientific
American and an advertising agency
focusing on the pharmaceutical industry.
Realizing that he was following a path
different from what he thought he
was supposed to be on, he entered the
Seminary of Immaculate Conception in
Huntington as part of his discernment
of a calling to priesthood; while there
he earned a Masters in Theology. After
making the decision to leave the seminary,
Mr. Semmler’s journey took him to
Archbishop Molloy High School in
Queens to teach religion and theology,
lead the campus ministry program and
assume a number of administrative duties.
It was during this time that he also earned
his P.D. in School Administration from
Queens College.
After 11 years in the high school
setting, Mr. Semmler felt compelled to
share his talents with the Diocese of
Brooklyn and assumed the position of
Associate Superintendent, moving from
in front of the classroom to implementing
the educational vision of the Diocese.
His duties included overseeing 22
elementary schools, furthering the
standards for professional development
of the principals, and working closely
with advisory boards to “preserve the
vision” of the Diocese while guiding its
reorganization to achieve efficiencies
across the board. As exciting and
satisfying as this opportunity was, Mr.
Semmler came to miss the day-to-day
interaction with students, parents and
teachers, witnessing first hand the fruits of
his labors. It was in the Summer of 2010
that he filled this void by accepting the
position as Principal of Bishop McGann-
Mercy Diocesan High School, replacing
Dr. Steven Cheeseman, who ironically
was leaving his role as Principal to serve as
the Associate Superintendent for Schools
of the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
Upon arriving at Bishop McGann-
Mercy, Mr. Semmler was made to
feel right at home. “Mercy spirit
was demonstrated and felt at every
opportunity I was given to meet people,
whether it was with the students, faculty,
parents and alumni, and the Mercy
Advisory Board.” Hitting the ground
running, Mr. Semmler knew that it was
important to build on the momentum
and growth that had taken root as a
result of Dr. Cheeseman’s efforts. Under
Mr. Semmler’s guidance, the School is
working towards accreditation from the
Commission for Secondary Schools of
the prestigious Middle States Association.
This accreditation signifies excellence
in education and adherence to the
standards set forth by the Association.
As part of the accreditation process, the
School is required to evaluate itself, a
proactive process which is helping in the
development of a sound, solid curriculum
and giving it a platform for future growth
and advancement. In addition, Mr.
Semmler is also excited about working
with St. John’s University on finding
ways to introduce new curriculum to the
school.
Living in Merrick with his wife and
two children, eleven-month old Thomas
and Sofia, who is almost three, Mr.
Semmler feels blessed to be able to feel
like he is at home, even when he is not.

Traveling Far to Help Those
Close to Their Hearts
Many years ago, Father Michael Rieder, former
chaplain of McGann-Mercy High School started a
collaborative project with the Christian Foundation
for the Children and Aging (CFCA), a Catholic lay
organization based in Kansas City, Kansas whose
core values are grounded in the Gospel’s call to serve
the poor. This project entailed the sponsorship of
children in need in developing countries around the
world, primarily El Salvador. Funds raised through sponsorship are used to satisfy
needs of nutrition, education, healthcare, housing and most importantly to provide
the skills necessary for recipients to make their own opportunities and successes
in life. This sponsorship
project blossomed into
something much bigger than
McGann-Mercy’s program of
participants sending money
to young children a world
away.
Two years ago, Fr. Rieder
and Mrs. Michelle Nappi,
McGann-Mercy religion
teacher, led a group of students with their CFCA hosts to a small village in El
Salvador where they were able to see first-hand the fruits of their labor. This past
August, the group, which had grown to 17 people, including 10 students, packed
their bags and traveled to Santa Ana, El Salvador. It was there that the students
were able to meet some of the children that
they have helped sponsor, see their day-today
life, explore some of the vibrant culture
and even help build three houses. Also
accompanying the group was Mr. Madama, an
English teacher at McGann-Mercy, who was
inspired by those students who had made the
trip the previous year. He approached his local
parish, St. Gerard Majella in Port Jefferson
Station, inviting them to aid in the mission
by taking up special collections at weekend
masses. The money raised through this effort was used to purchase the materials
used in building the houses, as well as supplies for the local school. While there
many “a-ha” moments throughout the trip, Mrs. Nappi summed it up best when
relating that “all the students
thought they could do everything
by themselves. It wasn’t until
they were building the houses and
they realized that if they couldn’t
successfully drive the nails in, they
needed to call for help … that
everyone needs to work together
… a lesson that will be used time
and time again.”
Success at the
Declamatio!
On November 16, 2010, students of Latin
study from all over Long Island descended
upon Stony Brook University to compete
in the 8th Annual Suffolk Classical Society
Declamatio. The competition involves
memorizing 100 words in Latin from
a literary work and presenting them in
dramatic fashion before a panel of judges
and fellow competitors. Representing Bishop
McGann-Mercy were Danielle Allen, Elizabeth
Morgan, and Melissa Wilson on the high
school level (Level II), and Monica Healy
and Allegra Maloney on the junior high level
(Level I). Success abounded for the team,
with Danielle Allen tying for first place with
Riverhead High School with her declamation
from Virgil’s Aeneid.
Parting is Such
Sweet Sorrow
On January 28, 2011, an era ended at
Bishop McGann-Mercy Diocesan High
School. Faculty, staff and former students
came together to say goodbye and offer
best wishes to Srs. Mary Donald and Mary
Philippa, as they prepared to leave the
Convent on campus and move to Sisters
of Mercy Convent in Whitestone. Sr. Mary
Donald, who had been living in the Convent
for 43 years, served as an English teacher
at Mercy. Sr. Mary Philippa was formerly
Principal at Maria Regina in Seaford and
came to Mercy 46 years ago to be an English
teacher as well. Sr. Charitina, who was not
present at the Farewell, had been living in
the Convent for 25 years and served as the
School’s librarian.

Tee Time!
On Thursday, September 23, 2010, McGann-Mercy’s
Booster Club ran the School’s most successful golf
outing to date. Raising more than $40,000 (gross),
the outing was held at Rockhill Golf & Country Club
in Manorville. Players enjoyed a fabulous day of golf,
followed by a delicious lobster dinner. Special thanks
to Event Co-Chairs, Bruce Bradley and Terri Hiemroth.
Rob Terry – Eagle Scout
Congratulations to Robbie Terry,
who achieved the honorable rank
of Eagle Scout in January 2011. A
senior at McGann-Mercy and a
member of Boy Scout Troop 58,
Robbie set out in June 2010 to build
an oyster reef in North Sea Harbor
to help stimulate the growth of
one the valuable resources for the
baymen of this region. By the time
the project was completed, Robbie
had raised 500,000 oysters and
250,000 clams, which were released
in the Fall of 2010 in North Sea
Harbor and Shinnecock Bay.
Deck the Halls!
The School held its Annual Christmas Raffle on December 12th, bringing in more than
300 parents, students, alumni and community members to help support Mercy. With
refreshments donated by parents, more than 200 beautiful Chinese auction baskets and
the grand prize raffle, approximately $125,000 (gross) was raised. The day was made
even better when a Mercy parent won the $20,000 grand prize!! Monies raised from this
annual event help to subsidize tuition costs. Annually, McGann-Mercy students benefit
from more than $1 million dollars in tuition assistance.
Peace & Sanctity Abound
This past fall, the school’s chapel was
completely renovated thanks to the
generous support of various donors.
The chapel, adorned with a combination
of old-world and modern religious
artifacts, provides a place for students
and faculty to come together as one
to celebrate the Holy Spirit, and the
opportunity to spend quiet time in
prayer during the school day.
Students Face
the Challenge
On November 12, 2010, five members
of the McGann-Mercy Academic Team
competed on MSG’s “The Challenge”
in Manhattan. “The Challenge” is a
game-show type academic competition,
where schools compete against each
other in sudden-death matches – you
lose and you are out for the season.
This year’s team members, Michael
Stever (Captain), Laura Lynne Duffy,
Stephen Keegan, Kevin Zebroski
and Victoria Tremble (alternate),
accompanied by faculty advisor Dianne
Scanlon, competed against Deer Park
High School. The Team fared well, but
ultimately was edged out. Let’s look
forward to next year…
This Fall, members of McGann-Mercy High
School’s National Honor Society presented
ALUMNI
One of the most stressful
questions one faces throughout
the course of his or her lifetime
is “what do I want to be when I
grow up” While we all want to
be doctors, firemen, astronauts,
or the President of the United
States when we are eight, and
we all think we know what we
want to major in college to set us
on the right path, the first time
we seriously ponder this age-old
adage is when we prepare to
graduate from college and enter
the real world. And, many times,
the place where we finally land was not even a consideration when
we started. For Michelle Pirraglia, McGann-Mercy’s new Library
Clerk, her journey of exploration has come full circle.
Ms. Pirraglia, a Mastic native, has not strayed far from her
Catholic upbringing. Having attended Our Lady Queen of Apostles
during her formative years, she graduated from Bishop McGann-
Mercy High School in 1999. After receiving an Associates Degree
in Journalism from Suffolk Community College, she continued her
studies at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, ultimately
graduating with a BA in English in 2004. Being lucky enough to
leverage her summer internship spent copy editing at Suffolk Life
Newspapers into a full-time position, Ms. Pirraglia started as a copy
editor and reporter, and eventually moved her way up to Assistant
Bruce E. Kasold was named Chief Judge
of the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans
Claims on August 6, 2010. He had been a
Judge of the Court since his appointment by
President George W. Bush in December 2003.
Kasold was born on April 26, 1951,
in New York City. His father, Edward, was
a city employee who became a U.S. Army
lieutenant colonel, and his mother, Louise,
was a nurse’s assistant. He attended St. John
the Evangelist School before graduating from
Bishop McGann-Mercy Diocesan High School
in New York in 1969, and earning a degree
from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point
in 1973. Between 1973 and 1976, Kasold
served as a platoon leader and training
officer in the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery,
stationed in Texas, Maryland, and Colorado.
Inspired by TV law shows like “Perry
Mason,” Kasold attended the University of
Florida Law School, where he was a member
of the Law Review and earned his J.D. in
1979. Between semesters, he worked at
the Fort Rucker, Alabama, Army post as an
assistant defense counsel in 1977, and as an
assistant prosecutor in 1978.
Answering Your Calling
Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims:
Who is Bruce Kasold
The following year, Kasold joined the
Judge Advocate General’s Corps, handling
civil litigation cases until 1994. During that
period, he earned an LL.M. from Georgetown
University Law Center in 1982, and an
LL.M. equivalent from the Judge Advocate
General’s Legal Center and School in 1984.
Kasold lived in Augsburg, Germany, from
1984 to 1987, serving as legal counsel to
the VII Corps Artillery Commanding General.
Among his various responsibilities was
counsel or co-counsel in about 50 courtsmartial
cases. In 1987 he joined the Army’s
Office of General Counsel at the Pentagon
as an assistant general counsel. He was
subsequently recruited for a fellowship
on Capitol Hill, splitting his time between
the offices of then-Senator Joe Biden
(D-Delaware) and Senator John Warner
(R-Virginia).
In January 1994, Kasold joined the
Washington, D.C. law firm of Holland &
Knight as a commercial and government
contracts litigation attorney. From November
1995 to December 1998, he worked as
chief counsel for the Senate Committee
4
Managing Editor in the newsroom. Beginning to feel disenfranchised
with the politics involved in the field, and as much as she enjoyed
her job, she realized it was just that, a job. She began to feel as if
she was missing something, and began discerning a vocation to the
religious life. After much prayer and careful exploration, she visited
the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist in Ann Arbor
Michigan.
Founded in 1997, this Dominican order has grown from four
sisters to more than 100, with the average age of a sister being 28
and the average age of entry being 21. While their main apostolate is
teaching, what drew Ms. Pirraglia to the order was their genuine joy
in living religious life, which includes community prayer, recreation
and deep devotion to the Eucharist and the Blessed Mother. Ms.
Pirraglia felt right at home and entered the order as a postulant in
August of 2008, eventually becoming a Novice in August of 2009.
Although she still loved aspects of the life and the sisters, after a time
of serious prayer and discernment she came to realize her vocation
lay elsewhere.
Moving back to Long Island proved fortuitous for Ms. Pirraglia.
Still recognizing the importance of a Catholic education, she soon
learned of McGann-Mercy’s need for a library clerk. Joining the staff
in August of 2010 has brought her back to where she started and
she couldn’t be more pleased. Helping, working and sharing with
the students (especially her love for the works of authors like J.R.R.
Tolkien) has given her the opportunity to further explore her calling.
When she is not at McGann-Mercy, she volunteers at St. John the
Evangelist Youth Ministry in Center Moriches and is a contributing
author for the Patchogue branch of patch.com, an online newspaper.
on Rules and
Administration
and codrafted
the
initial Senate
resolution
for the
impeachment
proceedings against President Bill Clinton.
From 1998 to 2003 Kasold served as
chief counsel to the U.S. Senate’s secretary
and its sergeant at arms. From 2000 until
2004, he served as president of the Capitol
Hill Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.
Beginning in 1989, he also served on the
board of the Pentagon Federal Credit Union,
providing voluntary financial services to
military and civilian personnel and their
families.
Dear Mercy Alumni, Parents and Friends,
As we stand half way through my first year as Principal at Bishop McGann-Mercy
Diocesan High School, I am pleased to state that the school is alive and thriving.
As always, McGann-Mercy is committed to promoting academic excellence, Gospel
values and Catholic traditions. In a culture that consistently challenges these
concepts, I am thrilled to report that McGann-Mercy students continue to achieve
excellence – spiritually, socially and academically.
The school’s success is built upon the commitment of many. Students and their
families along with the faculty and staff make McGann-Mercy such a remarkable
place. Each individual involved is dedicated to the mission of providing a Catholic
education. Financially, the School has been successful in raising funds through
personal gifts, events and grant-seeking activities. Alumni and other benefactors
are such an inspiration to us in our daily activities. I am confident that the support
we receive from our community will continue in response to the integral role we
play in building a bright future for our students and the Catholic Church.
In closing, I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as Principal of Bishop
McGann-Mercy Diocesan High School, humbled by past accomplishments, and
looking forward to a prosperous future.
Sincerely,
Carl A. Semmler
Thank You Donors!
Thank you to the many talented parents, alumni and community members who volunteer their
time and services. Their participation enriches our school in many ways throughout the year. By
organizing or participating in the various events or rolling up their sleeves to paint the building or
being tour guides, McGann-Mercy would not be the wonderful school that it is without their support.
Many employers provide a corporate matching gift which
may double or triple a donor’s contribution to McGann-
Mercy. This is an effective way to increase the amount of
your gift without any additional cost to you. Many organizations
match the contributions of spouses and retirees, too.
Contact your human resources department to find out if
your company participates in a matching gift program and
to get the necessary documents.
All gifts to McGann-Mercy’s Annual Fund are taxdeductible
to the full extent of the law. For more information
Annual Fund
Gifts to the Annual Fund are an important part of the school’s development. While tuition only
covers 70% of the costs, donations through the annual fund offset this deficit and help to defray
the costs of needed renovations and secure the growth of the school.
Matching Gifts
Donors employed by companies with matching gift programs can double or triple their
contributions by designating McGann-Mercy as the recipient of matching funds.
Bequests
After providing for your loved ones, you may wish to consider making a bequest to McGann-
Mercy in your Will. Through careful planning you can protect your family and contribute to the
financial security of the school.
Tributes
Donors can further the educational opportunities at McGann-Mercy by honoring or
memorializing a special person or event.
Gifts in Action
McGann-Mercy transforms lives …. This is just one reason why you may want to consider a
gift to Mercy’s various scholarship funds. Gifts fuel the mission of pursuing excellence in
education in an environment that is filled with Christian values and Catholic traditions. Whether
you choose to support an existing scholarship program or create a new one, providing the
opportunity for a Catholic education for a child is a lifetime gift, while creating a lasting legacy.
Alumni, parents and community members give to McGann-Mercy for many reasons and in many
ways. Several Mercy Alums and/or families have selected to participate in the financial aid
scholarship program by creating a memorial or family scholarship. The decision to take part in
a scholarship fund is very personal and reflects your interests and priorities. Below is a listing
