Diocesan High School
Two of McGann-Mercy High School’s students
had the privilege to attend the 44th Presidential
Inauguration on January 20, 2009. This once in
a lifetime opportunity was granted to freshman
Matthew Haughn of East Moriches and freshman Christopher
Andrew Young of Calverton. Each student was selected to attend
the inauguration due to their involvement with leadership
organizations.
Matthew was among students from all over the country
who participated in the People to People International 2009
Presidential Inaugural Conference, a forum of leadership and
scholars. At the conference, Matthew toured Mount Vernon
Estates, and visited with Mary Eisenhower. Eisenhower is
McGann Mercy Hosts 1st Annual College Fair
The Guidance Department at McGann-Mercy High School successfully hosted
its first annual College Fair. The purpose of the fair was to provide sophomore,
junior, and senior students, along with their parents, the opportunity to meet with
representatives from more than 80 colleges and universities including U.S. Army-LI
Recruiting Co. and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Mr. Joseph Cannon, Director of
Guidance at McGann-Mercy, stated that “The college fair was a success. It was a great
way for students and their parents to obtain college information without having to
visit each and every school.”
Living Mercy Leads the Blind
During the 2007-2008 academic year, the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind
visited McGann-Mercy and touched the heart of 12th grader Laurie
Chavarria, from Hampton Bays. In June of 2008, Laurie decided to
become a puppy walker. After extensive training Laurie was introduced
to “Smokey” a black lab. As part of Smokey’s training process,
Laurie socially integrated him to the community by bringing him to
school on a daily basis for four months. Smokey was able to become
acquainted with public environments and learn how to behave around people. The
administration and faculty at McGann-Mercy High School supported Laurie in
her commitment to “live mercy,” serving those in need, by training Smokey who will
in turn “live mercy” each and every day of his life leading the blind.
12 AP ® Scholars McGann-Mercy
Twelve of McGann-Mercy High
School’s Graduating Class of 2008,
earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition
of their exceptional achievements.
The College Board’s Advanced
Placement Program® (AP®) provides
motivated and academically prepared
students with the opportunity to take
rigorous college-level courses while in
high school. They are able to earn college
credit and/or advanced placement
for successful performance on the AP
Exams.
Through 37 different collegelevel
courses and exams, AP provides
motivated and academically prepared
students with the opportunity to earn
college credit or advanced placement
and stand out in the college admissions
process. Each exam is developed by a
committee of college and university
faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that
exams are aligned with the same high
standards expected by college faculty
at some of the nation’s leading liberal
arts and research institutions. AP is
The McGann-Mercy
Scholarship Fund
Raises Thousands
The McGann-Mercy “Live Mercy” Student Scholarship Fund
is an in-house “fund” for current students and their families
who are facing financial hardships. The fund was started by the
Class of 2008 who set the tone to assist a fellow classmate with
paying tuition. Now led by the Class of 2011, students seek to
raise money through various fundraising efforts including mass
collections, dress down days and most recently the sale of
Guatemalan Coffee Cafe Juan Ana. One dollar from every sale
goes to the scholarship fund and the rest to the community of
San Lucas in Guatemala.
Mercy students have proven just how big their hearts are
by their sensitivity to the needs and to the dignity of their fellow
classmates. “I see it as a great way to respond to the love yourself
commandment - lots of people spend too much time on their
neighbors to their own detriment. This helps keep us balanced.”
–Fr. Mike Rieder, Campus Minister
accepted by more than 3,600 colleges
and universities worldwide for college
credit, advanced placement, or both
on the basis of successful AP Exam
grades. This includes more than 90
percent of four-year institutions in the
United States. Research consistently
shows that AP students who score a
3 or higher on AP Exams (based on
a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the
highest) typically experience greater
academic success in college and higher
graduation rates than students who do
not participate in AP.
About 18 percent of the 1.6 million
students worldwide who took AP
Exams performed at a sufficiently high
level and were recognized with the AP
Scholar Award. Elizabeth Yakaboski
qualified for the AP Scholar with
Distinction Award. Jesse Blumberg
and Kenneth Healy qualified for the
AP Scholar with Honor Award. Kate
Cassidy, Robert Ghosio, Stephanie
Kober, Jung Min Maeng, Michael
Marafino, Bridget McPhelin, Rachel
Regula, Maximilian Spielmann, and
Lindsay Stemke qualified for the AP
Scholar Award.
The College Board is a not-forprofit
membership organization whose
mission is to connect students to college
success and opportunity. Founded
in 1900, the association is composed of
more than 5,400 schools, colleges, universities,
and other educational organizations.
Each year, the College Board
serves seven million students and their
parents, 23,000 high schools, and
3,500 colleges through major programs
and services in college admissions,
guidance, assessment, financial aid,
enrollment, and teaching and learning.
Among its best-known programs are
the SAT®, the PSAT/NMSQT®, and
the Advanced Placement Program®
(AP®). The College Board is committed
to the principles of excellence and
equity, and that commitment is embodied
in all of its programs, services,
activities, and concerns.
The McGann-Mercy
Booster Club Grants
a Wish
The McGann-Mercy Booster Club, currently
in its 3rd year, has had a tremendous
impact on the Athletic and Fine Arts Departments.
Led by current president Bruce Bradley,
the Booster Club’s goal is to assist these
departments by funding the purchases of
items that are not a part of the school’s budget.
At the beginning of each year, Coaches
and Fine Art Directors are asked to submit a
“wish list” of items in need but currently not
in the operating budget. The most recent
wish granted was to allocate funds toward
the purchase of a second scoreboard for the
gymnasium.
Fundraising for the Booster Club takes
on many forms. Memberships are offered at
$100 for a family and $35 for an individual.
The booster club also runs the concession
stand during varsity football games. This fall,
they held their first annual Pig Roast over
Homecoming weekend, which was attended
by over 200 families, alumni, and friends.
Most recently the club held their second
annual St. Patrick’s Day Fundraising Party at
Buckley’s Inn Between in Hampton Bays.
Due to their hard work and dedication
to the school, the booster club has raised
approximately $100,000 to support McGann-
Mercy. For more information on how to get
involved with the Booster Club, contact Bruce
Dear Friends:
As Principal of McGann-Mercy Diocesan High School, I am proud to report the success
thus far for the 2008-2009 academic year. The theme for this school year is “Commitment
To Excellence.” Administrators, faculty, and students have all been challenged to strive for
excellence. They have set excellence as the standard and are working to make sure that they
do their best to meet that standard. I am happy to report that so many members of our Mercy
community have accepted this challenge and are meeting it in their own way.
This year marked the largest freshman class that Mercy has seen in 20 years! The athletic
field campaign has been completed and we recently received approval from the Department of
Environmental Conservation to begin our fundraising campaign for the construction of our
Environmental Science Wetland Remediation Program. Once this is complete we can move
forward with construction of our girls softball field.
While we are very proud of our accomplishments, we must also be mindful of the importance
of the need for continuous improvement and growth. This continued growth and expansion
of services can not happen without your support. Every year, McGann-Mercy High School is
faced with a gap between tuition paid and the actual cost to educate a student. This academic
year it will cost approximately $9,500 to educate a student. Our tuition price, inclusive of fees,
is anywhere from $2,000 for high school students to $4,500 for junior high students less than
our cost. Mercy’s 480 students are benefiting from more than $1 million dollars in financial
assistance.
This gap — otherwise known as a deficit — is offset in two ways: an annual subsidy from the
Diocese of Rockville Centre and annual contributions from alumni, current parents, graduate
parents, and loyal friends.
Since the current subsidy from the Diocese is decreasing each year, the majority of the monies
needed to offset this gap must be raised through annual giving. We, I, personally ask that you —
as a McGann-Mercy family member — consider a gift to our Annual Fund program. Your gift
will ensure our future and enable us to keep Catholic education accessible and affordable on the
East End of Long Island.
Thank you in advance for your support. If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate
to contact the Development Office at 631-727-5900 ext. 34.
Sincerely,
Dr. Steven Cheeseman
In order for McGann-Mercy to provide an excellent educational program that is affordable,
charitable support for vital needs such as the Annual Fund, scholarships and financial assistance
o Please contact me, I have or plan to include McGann-Mercy in my state plans.

Remembering
McGann-Mercy
Annual Fund
Gifts to the Annual Fund are an important part of the school’s development. While
tuition only covers 70% of the costs, donations through the annual fund offset this
deficit and help to defray the costs of needed renovations and secure the growth of
the school.
Matching Gifts
Donors employed by companies with matching gift programs can double or triple
their contributions by designating McGann-Mercy as the recipient of matching
funds.
Bequests
After providing for your loved ones, you may wish to consider making a bequest to
McGann-Mercy in your Will. Through careful planning you can protect your family
and contribute to the financial security of the school.
Tributes
Donors can further the educational opportunities at McGann-Mercy by honoring or
memorializing a special person or event.
For more information on how to make a gift to
Paving the Way for Our Future
Now YOU have the chance to become a permanent part of the Monarch Trail, the trail that
leads our leaders of tomorrow, as well as family and friends, to the athletic fields. Purchasing a
bench, paver, or brick will allow you to honor someone or commemorate a special occasion, such
as graduation or marriage. It is also a great way to promote your business, as well as show your
Mercy spirit.
I want to help PAVE the way for McGann-Mercy’s future!
