5TH MEMORIAL SPECIAL EDITION A Newsletter for Parents 5 December 2010
THE LJC ANGEL
The Loyola Angel is gracefully enthroned in front of the Memorial Hall. The idea to create a befitting statue in memory
of the Sixty was first conceived by Fr Marc Roselli, SJ (Principal 2003—2006), after the hall was completed in
2006. Fr John Okoria Ibhakhewanlan, SJ, as Principal after Roselli, supported this project and gave the needed support.
Thus, Mr Duncan Agwu (current HOD, Fine Art Department) was called upon to actualize this dream. The
making of the statue was done in the school’s art studio. Sandra Nwosu (Class of 2007) and Dubem Jideonwo
(Class of 2009) were selected as models.
The Angel at the memorial hall is mounted atop the two doorways of the entrance of the hall. Under the statue is a
marble plaque with the names of the Sixty Angels engraved on it. The statue of the angel is modeled sitting on a
stump of a tree. The cut tree symbolizes the tragedy of the Angels who were cut down in their budding years. Not to
be held down by the unfortunate calamity, the angel in poise looks into the future with hope. The torchlight held by
the Loyola Angel in its right hand is a symbol of hope amidst despair.
From the Principal
Experts have blamed the crash of December 10, 2005, on a combination of factors: bad weather, lack of
adequate equipment at the Port Harcourt International Airport and the pilot’s misjudgement. Many have
wondered why a loving God would permit such a tragedy. Our faith teaches us that God does not [cause]
such tragedies to befall us because he loves us (Rom. 8:35). Moreover, the same faith reminds us that He
is God because He can write straight with our crooked lines; thus, we are told that everything works for the
good of those who love God (Rom. 8:28).
Though it may be easy to blame this tragedy on one agent or the other – God, the government, Sosoliso,
etc. – it is wiser and more fruitful to ask ourselves what the event teaches us, and how far our negligence
and inaction have contributed to the prevailing culture of mediocrity that allows such a catastrophe to occur
in our society. Thank God the bereaved parents [and LJC PTAs] are conscientising Nigeria about safety
standards in the aviation industry. But what are we also doing about the death traps on our roads, the incessant
power failure, the poor medical facilities in our hospitals, our deplorable educational system, our
superficial and fanatical religious practices, and the unavailability of potable drinking water in our
neighbourhoods
In her poem, Left to Run the Race, Kechi Okwuchi [the only LJC student that survived the crash] reminds
us that we are not alive today because we are holier, or more blessed, or even luckier than the
Sixty. We are alive because fate has left us to run the race; to tell the story, and to make the changes
that those who went before us could not make. We are left to run the race because we have to make a
difference in our world. We are left to run the race because God relies on us to continue to build his
kingdom of justice, love and peace in this world.
Thus, let us put on our running shoes and begin the race for qualitative education for every Nigerian
child. Let us run for safety for all, as a stand against the ongoing kidnapping of the innocent, especially
children. Let us persevere in the race for better healthcare, for public libraries for our children, and
electricity to aid their studies. Let us run tirelessly for as long as we live, for this is the reason we are
gifted with our next breath and heartbeat. Having done this, whenever our end comes, we can say
with Paul in 2 Timothy 4:7-8:
I have done my best in the race, I have run the full distance, and I have kept the
faith. And now there is waiting for me the victory prize of being put right with
God, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that Day
